It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

The bell-ringing, hateful-faced Don Hector Salamanca had no shortage of enemies in Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul, but cast members and creatives from both series are remembering actor Mark Margolis fondly today. The stage and screen veteran died Thursday at 83, and tributes are all over social media from the likes of Bryan Cranston, Bob Odenkirk, Peter Gould, Michael Mando and others.
“I am very saddened today to learn of a friend’s passing,” multiple Emmy-winning Breaking Bad star Cranston wrote on Instagram. “Mark Margolis was a really good actor and a lovely human being. Fun and engaging off the set (and in the case of Breaking Bad and Your Honor), intimidating and frightening on set. His quiet nature belied his mischievous nature and curious mind…and he loved sharing a good joke. I miss him already. Rest now, Mark and thank you for your friendship and your exceptional body of work.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

Refresh for updates… Dean Stockwell, the Quantum Leap, Blue Velvet and Married to the Mob star who died Sunday at 85, is being remembered today, with filmmaker David Lynch honoring the actor in his usual idiosyncratic way, and lifelong friend Russ Tamblyn offering a poignant goodbye.
Stockwell’s Quantum Leap co-star, Scott Bakula, honored the actor in a statement to Deadline, writing, “I loved him dearly and was honored to know him. He made me a better human being…” Read the entire statement here.
Lynch, who directed Stockwell in the actor’s great latter-career highlight Blue Velvet in 1986, invoked his friend’s name during his daily YouTube feature David Lynch’s Weather Report.
“Here in L.A., a cloudy morning,” Lynch intones in his immediately recognizable drone. “Very still right now, 55 degrees Fahrenheit, 13 Celsius. In honor of the great Dean Stockwell, I’d like to recommend today ‘Honky Tonk, Part 1’ by Bill Doggett.

This is the third installment of a five-part series examining the transformation of television as the industry prepares to celebrate the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 19.
The pandemic has transformed the casting process – for now, at least – with Zoom actor tryouts largely replacing in-person sessions and self-taped auditions supplementing those as many of us hunkered down at home.
It’s not yet clear whether these virtual auditions are here to stay or will fade away once the global health crisis finally does. Casting pros and talent agents say there are clear benefits to virtual sessions conducted over video-conferencing platforms like Zoom but lament the lack of intimacy compared to in-person auditions.
In the short-term, however, many see these virtual auditions as having a big silver lining for Hollywood. When the pandemic shut down much of the industry in March 2020, Zoom enabled casting pros to broaden their reach further. Working-from-home, and...

“The Comey Rule” premiered on Showtime over two nights on September 27 and 28 of last year telling the story of James Comey’s (played by two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels) tenure as the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The two-part limited series frames Comey’s time as the head of the FBI through two of the most high profile investigations the agency conducted. The first is the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary and Comey’s decision to announce that the investigation was being reopened (due to a connection with former congressman Anthony Weiner) less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election. The second part of the series examines Comey’s navigation of the agency’s investigation into the campaign of President Donald Trump (played by Emmy winner Brendan Gleeson) and possible connections it had with the Russian government.

Sharon Bialy and Gohar Gazazyan both knew that they had an incredible task in casting someone to play Donald Trump in the Showtime limited series “The Comey Rule.” “His mannerisms and the way that he carries himself has been done so much in comedy. We were really leaning towards a sort of authentic portrayal of him, but there’s still that part of him that is almost like a sketch version of a person,” Gazazyan remembers in our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above). They would eventually land on Brendan Gleeson, but there was one small problem: he turned it down. This forced Bialy to exercise her powers of persuasion to help change his mind. “I wrote a beautiful letter to him. And then I just kept calling and saying, he really should talk to Billy. You really should talk to Billy or, or read it again. And the manager was really helpful,...

“The Handmaid’s Tale” went to Washington, D.C. for its third season, revealing the capital of the fictional Gilead, which looks very, very different from our nation’s seat of government in present day.
That massive on-screen transformation is thanks to the hard work of the costume, VFX, production, casting, makeup and hair departments, who came together during the 2019 government shutdown to build up a dystopian version of America’s capital that might be the most terrifying setting the Elisabeth Moss-led Hulu drama has shown us so far. And they had just three weeks to plan for it all and one day to shoot it.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” team broke down the on-location episode during a “Crafts Masterclass” conversation with TheWrap, which included costume designer Natalie Bronfman, production designer Elisabeth Williams, head makeup artist Burton LeBlanc, head hairstylist Paul Elliot, VFX producer Stephen Lebed and casting director Sharon Bialy,...

There’s a tremendous amount of deliberation and reflection going on in The Walking Dead community as AMC’s zombie flagship nears its historic 100th episode.
Just yesterday, for instance, the network released a heartfelt, emotional highlight reel designed to pick the very best moments from the past 99 episodes. As a retrospective, it proved to be a timely reminder of just how far Rick and the gang have come, not to mention the horrors they’ve faced along the way. Fighting off the dead is one thing, but ever since The Walking Dead first premiered seven whole years ago, AMC’s series has developed a knack for scenery-chewing human villains, each more psychotic than the last.
And so, after confronting Shane and the Governor and everyone in between, The Walking Dead has placed Rick and his ragtag group on a collision course with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, and all...

We’ve all had that moment where we’re hired to kill someone but then fail after embracing our inner thespian in the name of theatrical community and a heartwarming display, right? In the rare case that you haven’t experienced such a turning point, HBO would like to make sure you’ve had the opportunity to witness the transformation. “Barry” will follow a former Marine-turned-hitman who has a change of heart when he meets a ragtag group of actors. Bill Hader, who co-wrote the pilot, will star on and direct the first episode when filming begins this April in Los Angeles. Sharon Bialy and Sherry Thomas will cast the project that has yet to attach anyone other than Hader. It’s getting hard to find new superheroes. Breaking Bad aired on AMC for five seasons. Viewers tuned in week after week to see life of Walter White, who was played by Bryan Cranston, on the small screen. The series was ended after five seasons and bowed out with a very memorable finale.
Fans are still curious about the behind the scenes antics on the series, and a casting director has now shared some more secrets from the set, according to The Huffington Post.
Sharon Bialy revealed that some of the main stars on the series did not land their roles at first. AMC had to be sold on the idea to hire Bryan Cranston. He was the dad from Malcolm in the Middle after all. Could he play Walter White?
Vince Gilligan thought so, and so did the other people in charge of casting, but they...

*Walking Dead comic book and filming spoilers ahead*
"The Walking Dead" Season 6 is entering serious comic book territory. The supersized premiere airs October 11, but the second half of the 16-episode season is currently filming in Georgia. Previously, there were clues to filming at Hilltop Colony --an ally community for Alexandria and a major location in the comic -- and a casting notice for someone that sounded like Paul "Jesus" Monroe, a badass Hilltop resident and future Rick Grimes buddy. The Spoiling Dead Fans has fresh updates on Jesus, who appears to now be filming with the group (no name for the actor yet, though).
And now there's a new casting notice for Episode 11 and beyond that has fans kinda split. Is it for Gregory, the tool who runs Hilltop, or Negan, the much-anticipated next major villain?
First, here's TVLine's tease, on Team Negan:
Now I'm really worried that a certain...

Not to play favorites, but, well...It's happening. Robin Lord Taylor is our favorite breakout star of the new TV season. As Oswald/The Penguin on Fox's Gotham, he owns every scene, giving a perfectly nuanced and multi-layered performance as the man who ultimately will become Bruce Wayne's greatest foe. To the casual onlooker, it might seem as though Robin popped on the scene out of nowhere, but the truth is he's been auditioning—as he puts is "for anything and everything"—for quite some time, and was high on casting director Sherry Thomas and Sharon Bialy's radar for years after coming Thisclose to landing the role of Creepy Todd on Breaking Bad. Yup. It...
