Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the directors of this weekend’s dinosaur thriller 65, and the film’s producer Sam Raimi recently sat down to answer fan questions during a Reddit Ama session, and some interesting information came out of that series of Qs and As. For example, Beck and Woods revealed that a sequel to their 2019 slasher Haunt is in the works, and Raimi mentioned that members of his Ghost House Pictures production team are trying to come up with a story for a sequel to his 2009 film Drag Me to Hell. During the session, Raimi also named his personal favorite Sam Raimi movie – and let fans know he has a couple options to choose from when the time comes for him to direct his next movie.
When asked “Of all the films that you’ve made, which one would you consider to be your personal favorite?”, Raimi answered, “My...

This one delivers the 4K ‘experience’ — and David Lynch’s mesmerizing visuals and Angelo Badalamenti’s seductive music once again pull us into a different dimension. Four or five viewings down the line, the ‘storyline’ of this TV show-become-feature film is if anything less understandable. But it’s no less pleasantly weird — we can’t keep our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. My ‘quality’ section debates a question I’m getting more often: are 4K discs worth the upgrade?

A Simple Plan is a thriller of uncommon resonance. There are guns, murder and
betrayal, but Sam Raimi’s film is really about happiness and its relation to
money. For most, happiness and money is a struggle of career and family, habits
and foresight. But what if you were to simply find a gym bag full of drug money?
And what if you found this treasure with a relative and mutual friend who you
just couldn’t trust? This is the ‘what if’ conceit that will have you contemplating
your own reaction to such a crazy, life changing dilemma.
Set in a rural Minnesota town, the three men who stumble upon the cash are
Hank Mitchell (Bill Paxton), an upstanding mill worker; Jacob (Billy Bob
Thornton), his obtuse yet benevolent sibling; and Lou (Brent Briscoe), a
pugnacious barfly with a chip on his shoulder.

Brent Briscoe was the kind of actor that did a lot of supporting work and was one of the guys you didn’t hear from or about a lot but was just as important. He had a modest number of speaking roles but was at times relegated to just being the person that filled a spot and was more or less a placeholder. He was never a leading man as far as anyone can remember but what’s important to recall is that every person in the production is worth something and they perform a role that someone else either didn’t want

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.A study in contrasts. That's the best way to describe Part 11 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which opens with a brief moment of doom-laden calm—three young boys playing catch happening upon the bruised and beaten but very much alive Miriam Sullivan (Sarah Jean Long)—then details, for its first half, the many ways in which the titular town, as well as the few-states-over locale of Buckhorn, South Dakota, are coming unglued. But this is dramatic incident Lynch-style, which means that the narrative rhythms are always shifting (violently, unpredictably), as if someone was continually revving a car engine into the red, but never in a calculable way. There's madness in such extremity, as there's insanity in the blood-curdling scream...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Twin Peaks: The Return” (2017), Season 3, Episode 11, “Part 11.”]
“Damn good” only begins to describe Part 11 of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” an episode in which a lot of pieces came together both for the series’ central mystery and within its hero’s restricted mind.
First, let’s address what’s in the box. For all the parodies and homages that reference David Fincher’s iconic scene in “Seven,” this one may take the cake– well, the pie. The long drive into the desert. The long row of telephone lines on the side of the road. A mysterious box. An unarmed man held at gunpoint. These are the same images that evoked trepidation in Fincher’s film, but Lynch created a playful tone for “Twin Peaks.”

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. There's a brief, very beautiful moment in Part 7 of the new Twin Peaks, during the scene in which hotelier Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) and his secretary Beverly Paige (Ashley Judd) are investigating a strange sound emanating from the walls of the Great Northern. Ben points in the direction that he thinks the soft, soothing tone is coming from, and for a second he seems to be pointing right at the camera—past it, really…toward our world, at those of us on the other side of the fiction/fact divide. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it breach, but it lays some subtle groundwork for what follows: The aesthetically and thematically provocative Part 8 fitted the Twin Peaks mythos into our very real history of atomic destruction. And this week's...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. So that's how David Lynch does an info dump. First, with a cheeky, knowing scene featuring the brothers Horne: "Jerry, what's going on?" asks Ben (Richard Beymer) after his cannabis-infused sibling (David Patrick Kelly) phones him from the woods. "I think I'm high!…I don't know where I am!" Jerry screams, perhaps speaking for a good subsection of the Twin Peaks revival audience, who have, over the six prior installments, been given only glimpses of a larger picture. Narrative momentum comes in asides; the more prevalent longueurs are reserved for atmosphere and mood, for full immersion in apparent stasis.Part 7 shakes things up, following the brotherly freak-out with several story reveals that come in quick succession. But there's a niggling sense throughout all the...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

Fortunately for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), he's been able to sit out most of the real-life insanity of the last 25 years. Unfortunately—as surely known by those viewers familiar with Mark Frost and David Lynch's singular television series Twin Peaks, which returned Sunday, May 21st for a limited, 18-episode run on Showtime—that's because he's been trapped in the unearthly purgatory known as the Black Lodge, all while his devilish doppelgänger, a mortal manifestation of the murderous spirit known as Killer Bob, runs amok among mankind.Already it feels like I'm speaking in tongues. The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.

It’s so hard to tell nowadays what kind of film you are going to get by just looking at the solitary picture and the synopsis. I seldom ever rely on the number of stars that it has, because someone else’s trash just might be my treasure. Back in the video store days, there were absolutely no guarantees even by looking at the videocassette box, but I guess that I just had a false sense of security that I could make a more informed choice. I’m slowly letting go, and just going with straight up intuition.

The Descent arguably made being stuck underground scary again, with intelligent use of the darkness and just a hint of claustrophobia half of the job of scaring the audience was done before the creatures even made an appearance on screen. Beneath may not want to be compared to Neil Marshall’s movie, but as a fan I can’t help but compare the two.
Beneath may claim it is inspired by true events, but we know that this is a statement that is used as a marketing tool to get attention but means nothing when it comes to historical fact. In the movie we see a crew of coal miners trapped 600 feet below the ground.

Seriously. Do I have to lay out the plot of a film called Zombeavers? It features zombie beavers. What else do you need to know? Oh well, here goes: Three college friends decide to spend the weekend at a riverside cabin in the woods, man free, after one of the trio splits up with her boyfriend. However the boys see things differently and invite themselves on the trip in the hopes of having a debauched weekend filled with sex and booze. Little do the group know, they are right next door to a lodge of beavers who have been mutated, by an accidental toxic waste spill, into rabid zombeavers.
See, did I really need to explain that? Kids go woods. Kids get dead.

We Now Begin Our Descent: Ketai’s Debut a Minor Effort
Arriving decently dressed but in poor taste is writer/producer Ben Ketai’s directorial debut, Beneath, sharing its bland title with Larry Fessenden’s most recent indie horror film. This genre exploitation effort, which may eventually make a great double bill with Patricia Riggen’s forthcoming reenactment of the plight of the 33 Chilean miners from the 2010 Copiapo mining accident, often feels like a cheap knockoff of Neil Marshall’s The Descent, though Ketai’s adherence to the poker faced formula of And Then There Were None should satisfy those appreciative of commitment to ambience, no matter how generic the end product.
Samantha (Kelly Noonan) is an environmental lawyer who returns to her home town to celebrate her father George’s (Jeff Fahey) last day on the job due to declining health. Recording the celebratory efforts by interviewing several co-workers,...

*there are some minor spoilers here. Director: Ben Ketai. Writers: Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano. Cast: Brent Briscoe, Kurt Caceres, Eric Etebari and Jeff Fahey. Ben Ketai's (30 Days of Night) second feature film as director is the horror title Beneath. This film was recently released on video-on-demand, through IFC Films. And, this is one horror film that viewers should take notice of. Dealing with trapped miners deep below ground, the writing team of Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano introduce a supernatural element, born of hell. Lots of thrills can be found in Beneath, with the lighting standing out as the film's strongest element. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of tension in this exciting, horror outing. The story primarily focuses on the character Samantha (Kelly Noonan). Sam is visiting her dad from New York and Sam's dad is close to retirement. As a fond gesture, Sam...

"I want you to take a deep breath..." Scared of being stuck in a cave? Are you claustrophobic? This isn't the trailer for you. IFC Films has debuted a trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, not to be confused with the other Beneath horror directed by Larry Fessenden. This one is about coal miners who end up trapped after a mine collapse, and one of them is a very pretty coal miner's daughter (go figure), played by Kelly Noonan. The cast includes Jeff Fahey, Eric Etebari, Kurt Caceres, Brent Briscoe. While the synopses seem to hint there's a The Descent like creepiness in the cave, this actually just seems like a solid psychological thriller. Here's the first official trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, direct from IFC (via SlashFilm): Synopsis for Beneath from IMDb: A crew of coal miners becomes trapped 600 feet below ground after a disastrous collapse. IFC Midnight announced a June 13 VOD release for Alex de la Iglesia’s horror comedy Witching & Bitching. "The Quick and the Dead," a somewhat forgettable 1995 Western starring Sharon Stone, isn't exactly the first movie in director Sam Raimi's filmography that would be thought of as career-changing.
At the time, Raimi was already the director of the cult favorites "Evil Dead II" and "Darkman." As he explained to HuffPost, he was so unhappy with his experience on "The Quick and the Dead" that it led him to smaller, character-driven movies, like "A Simple Plan" and "For Love of the Game." Perhaps it's no wonder, then, that his blockbuster series of Spider-Man films were later lauded for character development.
Raimi's latest is this weekend's new release, Disney's "Oz the Great and Powerful," starring James Franco as the wizard. "Oz" is a prequel of sorts to "The Wizard of Oz," though the production had to avoid any reference -- any reference! -- to events that occur in the 1939 film...

For his next trick David Lynch changed tack and shifted gears completely to tell the true story of Alvin Straight, a man who travelled across America to visit his estranged and ailing brother…on a lawnmower. The film was made independently based on a screenplay from Lynch’s frequent collaborator Mary Sweeney and even filmed chronologically along the route that Straight took from Iowa to Wisconsin.
After a successful debut at Cannes, the film was picked up by Walt Disney Pictures for distribution. In a case of art imitating life imitating art, Richard Farnsworth who played the title role was stricken with bone cancer during filming and so much of the frailty he exhibits on screen is in fact real. The following year Farnsworth would tragically commit suicide aged 80.

Chicago – Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me” provoked such a strong response after its Sundance Film Festival premiere that the auteur behind “A Mighty Heart,” “9 Songs,” and “24 Hour Party People” was shunned by a crowd that typically embraces challenging films. What turned them? Check out Winterbottom’s daring film with Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, and Simon Baker, now on Blu-ray and DVD.
