When Los Angeles voters head to the polls March 5 and again in the November general election, President Biden won’t have to sweat the results here and across the state. Nearly twice as many Californians are registered Democrat as they are Republican. In 2020, 71 percent of L.A. County voters picked Biden.
But Los Angeles remains popular for Democrats for reasons beyond ballot counting — it’s a fountain of campaign cash, much of it spouting from the entertainment industry. Consider that clutch of December fundraisers where co-hosts and attendees included such glossy names as Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes, Jon Hamm and Barbra Streisand. The events may have taken place amid some grumbling over lagging poll numbers and questions about whether the octogenarian commander-in-chief can woo young voters, but ultimately the wallets opened wide. Media reports put the take from the soirees at about $15 million, a hefty part of the $97 million the campaign on Jan.

When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and California Gov. Gavin Newsom debate this evening on Fox News, it might not have a direct impact on the 2024 presidential race, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have consequences for their futures and for the network.
DeSantis is no longer the definitive Trump alternative that he was when Fox News host Sean Hannity first broached the idea last summer, and Newsom is not even a candidate, despite facing perpetual questions about his presidential aspirations.
And while the right vs. left, East vs. West, Sunshine State vs. Golden State matchup is a bit of a gimmick, it is enough to draw media attention, with the negotiations over format and setting rivaling that even of a regular primary debate.
The 90-minute “great red state vs. blue state” debate, starting at 9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt, will take place in Georgia and, after some back and forth,...

Ann Philbin, who has led Los Angeles’ Hammer Museum for 25 years, will be retiring from the museum on Nov. 1, 2024.
Marcy Carsey, chair of the UCLA Hammer Museum’s board of directors, made the announcement on Wednesday, saying in a statement, “When the history of the Hammer Museum is written, there will be a clear line drawn— before Annie Philbin, and after Annie Philbin. Thanks to her vision, the Hammer is known today as a world-class museum, internationally renowned yet uniquely and indisputably at the heart of Los Angeles. She has guided a complete transformation of the museum — its facilities, its collection and its exhibitions and programs, which she has elevated in every way — while redefining the relationship of art museums to their communities and their society. We are profoundly grateful for her leadership and the values she has imbued into every level of this institution.”

On a plaque at the Watts Towers Art Center, adjacent to the iconic spires built by Simon Rodia, is a quote by the institution’s late co-founder, the renowned artist Noah Purifoy: “Creativity can be an act of living, a way of life, and a formula for doing the right thing.” The phrase, as well as Purifoy himself, has inspired Acts of Living, the sixth iteration of the Hammer Museum’s contemporary art biennial, Made in L.A. — and the first since the UCLA building was expanded this year thanks to a capital campaign that counted Marcy Carsey and Darren Star among its top contributors.

“The Conners” is making its way to off-net syndication, as Tom Werner’s Werner Entertainment has stuck a deal with both Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group and Debmar-Mercury to distribute the sitcom’s first five seasons (and future seasons as well). “The Conners” will be sold for a fall 2024 launch in domestic syndication.
Under the deal, Lionsgate’s Worldwide Television Distribution Group will oversee international distribution, including SVOD, AVOD, basic cable and Fast rights, while Debmar-Mercury (which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lionsgate) will handle domestic syndication.
“The Conners,” which launched in 2018 as the successor series to “Roseanne”, was recently renewed for a sixth season on ABC. The show is ABC’s most-watched comedy, and has already hit 93 episodes — making it a rare new sitcom entrant in the off-network syndication world.

Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has drawn early support from a range of figures in entertainment, media and tech, including six-figure contributions from a list that includes Seth MacFarlane, Netflix’s Reed Hastings and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Among donors in entertainment, Jeffrey Katzenberg gave the highest amount, $889,600. He is serving as Biden’s campaign co-chair. His wife, Marilyn Katzenberg, gave the same amount.
The list of donors also include actors such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, who gave $20,000, and other contributions came from Allison Janney, Rosario Dawson and Wendell Pierce.
Biden’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee reported raising $72 million in the latest quarter, the first of the president’s reelection bid, which he announced on April 25. The campaign has $77 million cash on hand.

“For so long we’ve been kind of a hidden gem,” says Connie Butler, chief curator of the Hammer Museum, which opened in 1990 at the base of an office building in Westwood. In the more than three decades since, the Hammer has gained an international reputation for its talked-about contemporary art shows and culture-shifting programming, including its biennial Made in L.A. exhibition, but the museum always lacked a marquee street presence.
That changes March 25, when the final phase of a multiyear revamp will be unveiled.
L.A.-based architect Michael Maltzan, who was first commissioned in 2000 to create a master renovation and expansion plan for the Hammer, has designed what he calls a new “welcoming porch” at the corner of Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to welcome visitors. “For the first time really, we will have a proper museum entrance,” says Butler, adding that the new entry will include a...

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers for “That ’90s Show” Season 1.
While all major players from “That ’70s Show” reunite in some form or another on Netflix’s spinoff series, “That ’90s Show,” there is one notable omission — that of Danny Masterson’s Hyde (first name Steven), the original Fox sitcom’s resident troublemaker and burnout.
The sequel series follows a new cast of basement dwellers, much to the chagrin of Red (Kurtwood Smith) and delight of Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp). “That ’90s Show” centers on Leia Forman — daughter to Eric and Donna — as she stays with her grandparents in Point Place during the summer. Additionally, Mila Kunis’ Jackie and Ashton Kutcher’s Kelso make guest appearances in the first episode, ahead of their on-and-off-again characters’ second remarriage. Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) also shows up, with a new romantic arc on the show and a thriving hair salon business. Donna’s father,...

If you needed a reason to tune into “That ‘90s Show,” the upcoming Netflix series that serves as a spin-off/sequel to “That ‘70s Show,” how about the fact that most of the original cast will return in the new series?

That’s right! As you can see in the trailer (watch above) Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama will appear as special guests in “That ‘90s Show.” Groovy. Or radical. Or whatever they said in the ‘90s.
The new series follows Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) who goes to stay with her grandparents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp), both returning favorites from the original series. Hello (again) Wisconsin!
Netflix has released a trailer for That ’90s Show, a sequel to Fox’s long-running sitcom That ’70s Show. The series will focus on Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), the teenage daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), who comes to Point Place to spend the summer with her grandparents, Red and Kitty (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp).
The trailer showcases the familiar kitchen and basement sets in the Forman home, as well as Red’s irritation that a house finally free of “dumbasses” is filling up once again with Leia’s new friends: Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), her brother Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan), Jay (Mace Coronel), Ozzie (Reyn Doi) and Nikki (Sam Morelos).
Smith and Rupp are regulars in the series, and Grace, Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Wilmer Valderrama will all make guest appearances (and are...

Netflix’s “That ’90s Show” has premiered its first teaser trailer, taking audiences back to the beloved basement circle with a new gang of characters and featuring well-recognized motifs like its predecessor’s signature guitar riff-heavy theme track, town’s seedy water tower (with the weed leaf still poorly painted on it) and Red Forman’s (Kurtwood Smith) penchant to say he’s going to put foots in people’s asses. The spinoff to “That ’70s Show” will premiere Jan. 19 with 10 22-minute episodes.
The show’s logline is as follows:

The sequel series focuses on Leia (Callie Haverda), the daughter of original series leads Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), who decides to spend the summer of 1995 in Point Place with her grandparents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) from the original series. While in the small town, she meets new friends and engages in many of the same antics that her parents did two decades ago.

Update: Joe Biden spoke for about a half an hour to about 100 guests at a fundraiser in Brentwood on Thursday, covering a range of topics including the state of the fractured media.
“There are no editors anymore,” Biden said, per a pool report. “The ability of newspapers to have much impact is de minimis.”
As he did last week at a fundraiser in New York at the home of James Murdoch, Biden also cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons. He also called Pakistan one of the most dangerous countries in the world as it had “nuclear weapons without any cohesion.”
He predicted that the work of the January 6th Committee would result “in some real change” as a consequence of their work.
Biden also participated in a photo line earlier in the evening for those writing higher-dollar checks.

Paul Schreiber has been upped to president of North America at Carsey-Werner Television, taking over all day-to-day distribution operations for the company, which houses a library that includes “That ’70s Show” and “3rd Rock from the Sun.” The news was announced on Tuesday by COO Bob Dubelko.
Schreiber replaces domestic distribution president Jim Kraus, spent 20 years leading Carsey-Werner’s distribution operation and who will now take a senior consultant role with the company. Kraus, whose 45-year career in TV syndication included a lengthy stint at McA-tv (then Universal’s syndication unit), first joined Carsey-Werner in 1999 as exec VP/general sales manager.
As for Schreiber, he’s also a Carsey-Werner longtimer, having first joined the company 26 years ago, back when Carsey-Werner was still active in first-run production. Carsey-Werner exited the active production realm in 2005 but kept a small staff going to continue handling its lucrative library. In recent years, Carsey-Werner has...

Since the late 1940s, the television sitcom has been an implicit delivery system of social instruction. These shows helped set social norms and create stereotypes like the bumbling dad and the dutiful, ever-forgiving wife. Sitcoms are designed to make us feel better and forget our problems while laughing at other people for a bit. All the while, they're creating social mores and codes in society, like silent computer programs running in the background of our lives.
Newsweek pointed out the impact TV had on an entire generation during the golden era of network television. The shows viewed by millions shaped things like fashion trends ("They all had suits") and more importantly, our perception of the world around us ("Nearly all the people were white").
However, in the right hands, sitcoms can be a force for good. Norman Lear got us talking about the impact of bigotry with "All in the Family.

Peter Roth started his career in show business fresh out of Tufts University with the dream of becoming another Harold Prince or Joe Papp in theater. He couldn’t have known back in 1973 that he was destined to become the Peter Roth of television executives.
“If you had a problem, you called Peter. If you needed advice, you called Peter. If you were wondering if you were doing your job well, Peter would beat you to the punch and call you, singing your praises, building you up and making you feel good,” says Julie Plec, a showrunner who worked with Roth for more than a decade at Warner Bros. TV. “He was a hands-on leader who never let the corporate side of the business prevent him from stepping right in just when he was needed the most.”

Seven years after he signed off as host of “The Tonight Show,” Jay Leno is ready to dive back into the daily TV grind as emcee of “You Bet Your Life,” a revival of the classic quiz show hosted for years on radio and TV by Groucho Marx.

The veteran comedian has been offered hosting gigs on many game shows over the years, but Leno didn’t have much interest in a show with a lot of involved game play. That made it a perfect fit for Leno, who sees it as a...

Exclusive: Coming off of its highest-rated run so far, the Steven Knight-created period gangster saga Peaky Blinders will begin shooting its 6th season in March. That’s after a move to BBC One last year and a first BAFTA for Outstanding Drama in 2018. Executive Producer Caryn Mandabach is the proud owner of the series that stars Cillian Murphy, and her Caryn Mandabach Productions has managed to remain independent amid a shifting television landscape and flurry of consolidation.
When we spoke recently, Mandabach felt it was important to talk about rights. In discussions with her fellow producers who have seen success, ownership is a main topic. “Everyone is feeling the heat,” she says. “No one who has already achieved success wants to go work as a producer for hire… The meaning of rights over time is if you’re careful and you own it, you are going to do right by it.
