Kurt Russell has been doing the press rounds for the Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and if there’s one thing that this press tour has made very clear, it’s the fact that people loves to talk to Russell about John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch or buy it Here). The latest ones to bring up The Thing him were the folks at GQ, and this time Russell took the opportunity to reveal that he wasn’t a fan of the sombrero Carpenter had his character MacReady wear.
Russell told GQ (with thanks to Syfy Wire for the transcription of the video), “I went into wardrobe … and when I was in there, I noticed, sitting over on this chair by itself, was this enormous sombrero. And finally, at some point, I said to the wardrobe person, ‘What’s the deal with the sombrero?’ And they said, ‘Oh,...

For 41 years, people have been discussing and debating the ending of John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch or buy it Here). People who worked on the movie can’t even seem to agree on what was happening in the final scene. Cinematographer Dean Cundey thought he had given away the answer, but then Carpenter came in and said Cundey had “no clue” what he was talking about. So the mystery remains. And for star Kurt Russell, it’s fun to hear that people are still talking about that ending.
Russell is currently doing the press rounds for the Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the ending of The Thing came up during his interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Russell said (with thanks to Screen Rant for the transcription), “We talked about that, the ending of that movie, John and I, for a long, long time. We...

We’re forty-one years down the line from the release of John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch or buy it Here), and fans are still wondering what exactly was going on with the last two characters in the final scene of the film. Of course, Carpenter knows – and he says that he’s the only one who knows. While cinematographer Dean Cundey has previously said that he specifically lit the scene to indicate which of the two characters had or hadn’t been assimilated by “the thing”, Carpenter refuted his claim during an interview with ComicBook.com, saying that Cundey “has no clue” what was going on in that moment.
Cundey presented what fans refer to as the “eye gleam theory”. He said that the characters were lit in a specific way throughout the movie so that the ones who were still human would have a gleam of light in their eyes.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Legendary director John Carpenter first worked with the great character actor Keith David on his 1982 film The Thing (watch or buy it Here), which has gone on to earn a reputation as being one of the best horror movies ever made. Six years later, they collaborated again on the cult classic sci-fi thriller They Live (watch it Here)… and then, apparently, they went thirty-five years without seeing each other in person. Recently, they finally crossed paths again – and David marked the occasion by sharing a picture of their reunion on social media. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
David didn’t provide any information on what brought them back together. Carpenter did recently reveal that he has directed a TV series called Suburban Screams, which filmed in Prague while he directed it from the comfort of his own home. It didn’t require much movement,...

When John Carpenter’s The Thing hit theaters back in June 1982, the only thing scarier than the film were the reviews. Vincent Canby of The New York Times called it “instant junk” while Cinefantastique featured The Thing on one front cover alongside the question, “Is this the most hated movie of all time?”
Yet, if anything, the past 40 years has seen The Thing become one of the most beloved sci-fi horror movies of all time, influencing everything from Stranger Things to Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. To paraphrase Die Hard 2, it was simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, with Carpenter’s sci-fi led gorefest arriving alongside Blade Runner on June 25 of its year, just a few weeks after the family friendly alien fun of E.T.
Thankfully, The Thing, also like Blade Runner, went on to enjoy a second life through...

It could be said that T.K. Carter only really has a few faces on screen that people would fully recognize since he’s only ever played a few different characters in terms of how he acts. A lot of what he’s known for are comedic roles that have allowed him to be the funny man and someone that livens up the mood more often than not, but he’s also been the tragic individual that is either kind of the nervous sort or the down on his luck type. It’s worked for him in a big way throughout the years since he’s

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their 2019 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups.) Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Two years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series in the last several years, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018 and 35 this year. Even so, with six nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.

Critically mauled on release and largely overlooked in cinemas, John Carpenter’s The Thing has only grown in stature since 1982. What were once condemned as deficiencies - its graphic gore and violence, icy tone and low-key characterisation - are now generally regarded as positives. Its simple story about a group of scientists and misfits who encounter a shape-shifting alien in their Antarctic outpost, The Thing has aged remarkably well for a 35-year-old film: Rob Bottin’s practical effects are still extraordinarily imaginative, and fans still debate the finer points of its action today. As big of a fan of Walter Hill as I am, it is shocking to me that I made it to the age of 36 without seeing Southern Comfort along the way. In fact, I’m not even certain I knew of its existence until I saw that Shout! Factory was releasing it to Blu-ray. This is the service that Shout! Factory provides. With their Scream Factory banner, they are providing the new generation of horror fans with an expert education in the genre, by establishing a brand that they trust, and then introducing them to titles that they probably wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. Apparently, even a genre veteran such as myself can be taught a thing or two by the label as well, and have pointed out for me that such a great “lost-in-the-woods” film exists. With a genre legend like Hill behind the camera, and acting legends such as Peter Coyote,...

There is something about Walter Hill’s style of storytelling that just gets me. I’m a big fan of The Warriors, even though it took me long enough to finally see the film. Once I finally got to see it though it turned into one of my favourite films. Southern Comfort is a film very much like The Warriors, written and directed by Hill it very much mirrors the style with a group of men out of their element and fighting for survival, though the city and the bayou are two very different “jungles”.

I’m fairly certain that when you think actors in blaxploitation cinema, Dan Akroyd doesn’t top the list of performers to excel in the genre. For one, he’s not black. Furthermore, he doesn’t fit the role of the heroic African American man or woman who is trying to seek vengeance, fight crime or afford justice to a group of downtrodden individuals. And even further, Akroyd is a nerd. Yes, I said it. The man is one great big nerd pants. Hardly befitting of the kind of hero portrayed in blax films of the 1970’s, but one film crossed over the border between blaxploitation and fish out of water comedy in the early 80’s. That film is about a man with an M.D. from the north shore of Michigan. Say Hello to Doctor Detroit.

In honor of snow falling in NY for the first time this year, the cult movie of the week is Ski Patrol, from 1990.
Roger Rose (better known now for voice over work) plays Jerry, the senior member of The Snowy Peaks ski patrol. He lives to ski and is in love with fellow instructor Ellen (Yvette Nipar – who is hot but has only really done guest stars on tv). They are joined by T.K. Carter as Iceman – fans of The Thing will recognize him as Nauls. Also on the team are a demolitions expert (George Lopez!), a misfit who can’t make the patrol team and a foreign exchange patroller… It all adds up to mayhem on the slopes. The plot is pretty standard fare amped up with typical late 80′s/early 90′s comedy flare – the troop is trying to save the lodge from greedy land developer Sam Maris… played by Martin Mull.

Rumors recently hit the web and now the trades have officially confirmed it - Matthijs Van Heijningen will direct Universal’s upcoming prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing. Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ron Moore is writing the screenplay. The new project borrows heavily from the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There," the basis of the Carpenter film and 1951 Howard Hawks original The Thing From Another World. It is set in a Norwegian camp and chronicles how the shape-shifting alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp. Strike Entertainment's Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. David Foster will be executive producer. Van Heijningen is an accomplished commercial director, having worked for such brands as Toyota, Pepsi, Heineken, Bud Light and Visa. He is also in the process of developing Army of the Dead at Warner Bros. with producer Zack Snyder Carpenter’s...

John Carpenter's The Thing is a near perfect film – excellent direction, great characters and groundbreaking special effects – so, I’m not sure if a prequel is entirely necessary. Nevertheless, Hollywood is moving forward with one and today comes word on who may be directing it. The folks over at Bloody Disgusting are reporting Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is in talks to helm the untitled project. Heijningen Jr., an accomplished commercial director, is also attached to helm Army of the Dead, a zombie flick being produced by Zack Snyder. Carpenter’s film centered on a group of scientists in Antarctic as they are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. It starred Kurt Russell, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Wilford Brimley and Keith David. The prequel will follow the group of Norwegians who battled the shape-shifting alien before it made its way to Kurt Russell’s camp.
