Lionsgate UK has newly boarded the movie as distributor. Two-time Oscar nominee Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) directs for LA and London-based management and production firm 42, with whom he collaborated on Military Wives.
Vivian El Jaber, Bjorn Gustafsson, Alfonsina Carrocio, Micaela Breque, Tomas Pozzi and Ramiro Blas round out the cast.
Based on the successful book of the same name by Tom Michell, the film charts the true story of a disillusioned Englishman who went to work in a school in Argentina in 1976. Whether they invite them or not, there are few stories where imagining what comes next is impossible. Part of the appeal of popular, lasting films and series is that they occupy a slice of a world, with the promise that something interesting might be happening elsewhere. Amidst the avalanche of brand extensions and franchise retreads and character revivals, “The Full Monty” feels like the kind of plucky independent film hit that could provide a foundation for a “where are they now” story that doesn’t feel like a cynical cash grab or marketing play. A quarter century after the original movie found success in a number of different arenas, a new FX series aims to revisit a ragtag group in the north England city of Sheffield to see what happens a generation after a sensation.

Peter Cattaneo's feel-good film is based on one of the singing groups Gareth Malone founded in his hit BBC series The Choir - although Malone is wisely kept out of this picture. Instead the focus is firmly on a group of women on an Army base, who are grappling with fears about their husbands, who are on a dangerous tour of duty in Afghanistan. Structured largely around the relationship that develops between the posh colonel's wife (Kristen Scott-Thomas) and the more working class sergeant's wife Lisa (Sharon Horgan), the choir they set up to improve morale contains all the initial dischord you might expect. The plot might follow a familiar tune but Scott-Thomas, in particular, helps the emotional beats land solidly.

Remember "The Full Monty," friends? The British comedy from director Peter Cattaneo and "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy earned critical acclaim across the board for its funny and charming story about six unemployed men, including four former steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act in order to get through some tough times. The film went on to land Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, even though it only won the latter.
Now, "The Full Monty" will have a chance at winning a whole new slate of awards because it's getting a sequel TV series at FX (on Hulu) with original cast members Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Wim Snape, and Tom Wilkinson all reprising their roles from the movie. It's been 25 years since they bared it all, so...

Deep breaths, everyone – you might feel old when you read the next sentence. It’s been 25 years since the cast of The Full Monty bared all in the hit Brit comedy-drama, Peter Cattaneo’s film tackling such serious topics as suicide, depression, parental rights and unemployment with an extra dose of Sheffield-centred stripping. And while that might leave you feeling like you’ve drunk from the wrong grail in The Last Crusade, there is good news – it’s officially a long enough interval to warrant the now-obligatory legacy sequel. Yes, The Full Monty is back, with the full cast – in tow, for a Disney+ series set two and a half decades after the film. Watch the first trailer here:
The series comes from original film screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, with producer Uberto Pasolini back too, joined by incoming writer Alice Nutter. And alongside Carlyle are returning stars Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp,...

One for sorrow, two for joy.
Three for a girl, four for a boy.
Five for silver, six for gold.
Seven for a story yet to be told.
Or, in the case of this “Magpie,” make that two stories yet to be told.
The latest limited series from PBS’s Masterpiece, “Magpie Murders,” may be derived from the popular children’s nursery rhyme, but the way director Peter Cattaneo unfolds the mystery within a mystery in this whodunnit is anything but child’s play.
The story, based on the 2016 novel by Anthony Hororwitz (the first in The Susan Ryeland series), begins when famed author Alan Conway dies shortly after handing in his new manuscript: “Magpie Murders.” The man’s death is suspicious, and the final chapter of his story is missing, setting up a meta mystery within a mystery that’s as much fun to follow as it is to solve.

When "The Full Monty" came out in the UK in 1997, it surprised just about everybody. There wasn't much buzz around my way, and most people seemed to think it was some kind of raunchy comedy for women. In those less enlightened times, I fielded several questions regarding my sexual orientation when I told friends I was going to see it. Some just couldn't understand why a straight guy wanted to watch a film about blokes getting their kit off.
Word-of-mouth built quickly and the screening I attended was packed. The crowd was roughly 70 women and the atmosphere was raucous, like a hen party getting revved up for the night. They were restless at first, probably because the film isn't a joke-a-minute comedy and it takes a while to get into the stripping action. Then the gang started their bumbling rehearsals and the tunes started, and the women were absolutely howling.

Exclusive: Anthony Horowitz believes his upcoming Magpie Murders adaptation is “the first time I’ve really got it right,” and has stated he will no longer write on classic TV murder mysteries.

Magpie Murders is based on Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling novel of the same name, with the author adapting his own work for the screen. The Full Monty helmer Peter Cattaneo has been set as the director.
Magpie Murders is an Eleventh Hour Films production for Masterpiece and BritBox UK, with Sony Pictures Television distributing worldwide. It will premiere next year.

Timothy Spall will star alongside Lesley Manville in the Masterpiece, BritBox UK and Eleventh Hour Films adaptation of “Magpie Murders,” Anthony Horowitz’s international bestseller.
Spall will play detective Atticus Pünd in the mystery-within-a-mystery in “Magpie Murders.” In the story, book editor Susan Ryeland (Manville) sits down to read the latest manuscript written by her popular author, Alan Conway, the writer behind the popular Atticus Pünd mystery series. When she discovers that its final chapter is missing, she goes to Conway’s house only to find his dead body. The story goes back and forth between the cozy case Pünd was trying to crack and Ryeland’s investigation of what happened to Conway.
Horowitz, who created the BBC mystery shows “Foyle’s War” and “Midsomer Murders,” has adapted “Magpie Murders” as a six-episode series. Production begins next week in England and Ireland, and “Magpie Murders” will air on Masterpiece on PBS next year.

Sony-backed Eleventh Hour Films has signed up The Crown star Lesley Manville to lead the cast of its PBS/BritBox crime series Magpie Murders, while The Full Monty helmer Peter Cattaneo has been set as the director.
Oscar and BAFTA-nominated Manville will star as Susan Ryeland, an editor who is given an unfinished manuscript of author Alan Conway’s latest novel but has little idea it will change her life. Manville said Ryeland is a “fabulous” character, while Cattaneo added: “Anthony has adapted his novel into wonderfully witty and richly layered scripts. Two cleverly intertwined stories, and a host of fascinating characters led by Lesley Manville make this an irresistible opportunity for a director.”

Bryce Dallas Howard chose for her directorial debut film to make a movie about dads. But at first, her own father, Ron Howard, didn’t want to include their own family story.
That changed halfway through the filming of her documentary “Dads,” however, when her brother discovered that he and his wife would be expecting their first child.
“I also pitched maybe that I could integrate some of my own family story, and my dad was like, ‘No. No. You’re not allowed to,” Howard told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven. “The whole time, I kept being like, we need to profile a dad who is an expecting dad, who hasn’t had a kid yet. We need to capture that before and after. And as filming was progressing, we just kept not finding him. And when I learned that, I was like, hmm, we’re going to be in this movie.

Traditionally, the long Memorial Day weekend is the territory where Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies — or else massive tentpoles such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Aladdin” — plant the stake for a blockbuster summer season. But there’s nothing traditional about the release schedule this year. With the coronavirus pandemic still posing a public health threat, Hollywood studios are holding their big offerings for a future date. But there are still a few big-budget movies to watch — including “The Lovebirds” and Mary J. Blige’s “Body Cam” — and no shortage of smaller streaming titles. Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

Where to Find It: Rent on Amazon, iTunes and other on-demand platforms.

Director and cinematographer Benjamin Ree injected his deep interest with art theft in his latest feature The Painter and the Thief, which drops in virtual cinemas as well as VOD platforms starting Friday.
The documentary debuted at Sundance earlier this year and went on to win the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Storytelling before being acquired by Neon. In the film, two paintings by Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova are stolen from an Oslo art gallery. The thieves are identified with a quickness but the paintings are nowhere to be found.
Barbora reaches out to one of the thieves (Karl-Bertil Nordland) and she ends up painting a portrait of him. After a series of portraits the two form a bond and become unlikely friends.
“I’ve always been fascinated with art theft,” said Ree. “I think it’s because of the contrasts. The socially elevated art industry with...

Much of the newest film from The Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo, Military Wives, follows the mold of that effort that made him an Oscar nominee. It’s an emotionally effective ensemble portrait of blue collar Britain, with unseasoned performers finding a renewed sense of community through performance. Good times, neatly plotted setbacks, and reconciliation within family units are had by all. It even ends on an iconic disco track, but this time with even more charmingly awkward dancing.
However, Military Wives is more defined by its modesty than its showmanship, lovely and satisfying but without much in the way of complication or embellishment. Even as it follows the formula, it downplays much of its musicality and emotional grace notes when you expect it to soar. Comfort classic status is sadly averted due to its lower register, and yet it still fulfills most of what you crave...

They Could Go on Singing: Cattaneo Conducts Choir in Formulaic Melodrama
Director Peter Cattaneo resurfaces for his first narrative feature in over a decade with Military Wives, a formulaic but heartwarming crowd-pleaser of an effort which plays quite similarly to his 1997 breakout debut The Full Monty, a film which scored a gaggle of Academy Award nominations and marked him as one of the most notable British directors of the late 1990s. Recruiting the star wattage of Kristin Scott Thomas and celebrated comic actress Sharon Horgan as his two leads, juxtaposed in a classic Type A/Type B dynamic, his latest is roughly based on the true story of the formation of the UK’s first military wives’ choir.…...

In these times of pandemic isolation it’s no crime to look for the film equivalent of comfort food. Military Wives, though deeply reliant on formula and wrapped in a blanket of bland, fits the bill. Available on VOD this week, the film is a fictionalized take on the true tale of the wives and lovers of British soldiers serving in Afghanistan who formed a women’s choir to sing out their joys and fears. Their stories became a hit series on the BBC and spawned a No. 1 song, “Wherever You Are,...

Deployment day has arrived for the Flitcroft barracks. The soldiers are off to Afghanistan for a six-month stint while their spouses are left behind to raise families and attempt to stay sane. In a bid to help distract from the unavoidable worry, group activities are commonly brainstormed and executed for anyone interested in joining. And being the military, it should be no surprise that a rank-and-file hierarchy is adopted on that front too regardless of whether those forced into authority positions actually want them. As wife to the senior officer, Kate (Kristin Scott Thomas) always had. She enjoys the power it affords and the divisionary routine. With the recent promotion of Lisa’s (Sharon Horgan) husband, however, the duty now falls into her less regimented and more free-spirited hands.

This morning exhibitors and distributors were struggling to recall the last time the weekend grosses fell to such a nadir.
Typifying the market’s malaise, only Sony Pictures’ Bloodshot and Universal’s The Invisible Man in week three cracked $1 million.
In the Us, where some cinemas have closed, the estimated weekend take of $US55.3 million was the lowest since 1998.
The government’s ban on gatherings of more than 500 people has not impacted cinemas, at least for now.
Hoyts Cinemas CEO Damian Keogh tells If: “We have no immediate plans to close cinemas but will be guided by government policy.

This crowd-pleasing comedy drama from the director of The Full Monty hits all the right notes
“Great music doesn’t happen when things are perfect,” says Sharon Horgan’s brassy Lisa in this formulaic yet ultimately winning British dramedy. “It happens when you care.” That’s a truism that could equally be applied to the film itself, an “inspired by real events” crowd-pleaser from The Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo. Military Wives may indeed be far from perfect (to say it flirts with cliche is to understate its enthusiastic commitment to contrivance), yet for all its manipulative flaws, this goodhearted tale of the partners of service personnel finding musical strength together works the kind of movie magic that will leave you laughing and crying, often against your better judgment.
