Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: George Gershwin/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Last week, news dropped of a film inspired by the life and work of George Gershwin in the works, produced by Martin Scorsese and longtime producing partner Irwin Winkler titled ‘Fascinating Rhythm.’ It was also reported that John Carney will direct and co-write the film along with Chris Cluess. If you are unfamiliar with John Carney, watch ‘Once’ as soon as possible. The micro-budget Irish music film is a miracle of a movie. Made on a $100,000 budget with musicians turned actors, the film gave us the Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly” and forever cemented Carney as someone who cares deeply about how musicians and music are presented on film. He followed it up with two other charming and inspiring music-centered films, ‘Begin Again’ and ‘Sing Street.’ Related article: A Tribute to Cannes Film Festival: A Celebration of Cinema,...

While Martin Scorsese recently embarked on Killers of the Flower Moon and Paul Schrader is putting the finishing touches on his Oscar Isaac-led The Card Counter, it looks the duo will be reteaming in the near future. After not working together since 1999’s Bringing Out the Dead, the Taxi Driver and Raging Bull team will head to The Last Temptation of Christ territory for a new project.
“Well, Scorsese and I are planning something, and it is . . . it would be a three-year series about the origins of Christianity,” Schrader revealed in a fascinating conversation with The New Yorker‘s Richard Brody that touches on the state of the industry. He added the series is based on the Apostles and on the Apocrypha, saying, “Because people sort of know the New Testament, but nobody knows the Apocrypha. And back in the first century, there was no New Testament, there’s just these stories.

"Once" and "Begin Again" director John Carney is taking a respite from musicals with word that he's in early talks to direct "Russ & Roger Go Beyond" at Stx Entertainment and Sobini Films.
Will Ferrell and Josh Gad will star in the film about soft-core porn impresario Russ Meyer and then young film critic Roger Ebert who teamed up to produce the raunchy 1970s spoof "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls".
At the time, 20th Century Fox was struggling after several big-budget flops and gave "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" director Meyer an opportunity to do a studio film, the director insisting the film critic would have to pen the script. The result was a rare major-studio release with an X rating, but one that became a profitable hit.
Christopher Cluess ("The Simpsons," "Saturday Night Live") will pen the script while Mark Amin, David Permut and Richard Waltzer will produce.

It's a project sounds too good not to be made. “Russ & Roger Go Beyond,” penned by Emmy-winner Christopher Cluess (“The Simpsons,” “SNL”), tells the true story of famed film critic Roger Ebert and schlock director Russ Meyer, who teamed up to make the out there "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls." It's as unlikely a filmmaking pairing as film history ever saw, for a movie that certainly can never be duplicated. Citing “creative differences,” director Michael Winterbottom has exited comedic biopic Russ & Roger, according to a report by The Wrap.
Attached to the simmering comedic project since last April, Winterbottom appeared to be a shoo-in to take the reins of the feature film when production was finally set in motion early next year, though Stx Entertainment will now begin canvassing for a replacement sooner rather than later. Orbiting around the atypical real-life friendship between filmmaker Russ Meyer and film critic Roger Ebert, Stx’s drama still has a hold of Will Ferrell and Pixels star Josh Gad, who are on board to play Meyer and Ebert, respectively.
Russ & Roger will chart their mutual love for all things cinema, and their collaborations behind the lens – most notably for 1970’s cult classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Defying the then-steadfast Hollywood establishment in every which way, Ebert and Meyer co-wrote the uproarious feature,...

It's official. Hollywood Reporter is announcing that actor Josh Gad has signed on to play the late film critic Roger Ebert in the project Russ & Roger. Stx Entertainment is developing the comedy focused around the film critic and filmmaker Russ Meyer, to be played by Will Ferrell. Michael Winterbottom will be directing, from a script by Chris Cluess. THR doesn't mention a start date, but this is the kind of news that means it's happening sooner than later. There must be something fashionable to the idea right now of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Hollywood now has four Robin Hood movies in production, more than anyone really needs, perhaps even the poor. Tuesday Deadline reported that Warner Bros. had “quietly” put a new Robin Hood movie into production, this one being developed by the script writer for the upcoming Aquaman movie Will Beall. Deadline counts three others for it to storm the castle with: a family friendly swashbuckler from Disney called Nottingham & Hood, a Batman Begins style origin story aptly titled Robin Hood: Origins, and one from Sony that’s described as “Fast & Furious meets Mission: Impossible style reinvention of the tale.” With those four incredibly original ideas, anyone think this is the rich stealing from the poor?

Will Ferrell as cinematic cult icon Russ Meyer? Um, yes please. First announced last summer, word on "Russ & Roger Go Beyond" has been a bit quiet, other than Josh Gad being eyed to play the famous critic (though it doesn't seem to have panned out). But now it looks to have attracted a very interesting name to get behind the camera. Michael Winterbottom ("24 Hour Party People," "The Trip") is in talks to direct the movie that will tell the tale of Ebert and Meyer, who traveled to Hollywood and the 20th Century Fox lot to write the X-rated “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.” Christopher Cluess (“The Simpsons,” “SNL”) penned the script about this rather wild chapter in Roger Ebert's life. Filming will begin later in the year, but of course, the role of Ebert needs to be filled. Suggestions? Meanwhile, Chad Stahelski and David Leitch continue their victory lap following "John Wick.

Comedian Josh Gad ("Frozen," TV's "New Girl," the upcoming "The Wedding Ringer") is in talks to star as film critic Roger Ebert opposite Will Ferrell's Russ Meyer in "Russ & Roger Go Beyond," producer David Permut told Hollywood Elsewhere in Palm Springs on Sunday. With a script by "SNL"'s Christopher Cluess, the buddy comedy chronicles Ebert and director Meyer's collaboration on the salacious, 1970 cult melodrama "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls"—the first and only screenplay Ebert ever wrote. More a parody than a sequel of the 1967 Jacqueline Susann adaptation "Valley of the Dolls," the X-rated, sex-filled farce about a girl band was penned in just six weeks. Though the deal has yet to be set in stone, Gad is on board according to Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Wells (who takes issue with his casting) and The Wrap. Permut originally wanted Jonah Hill to play Ebert, but that fell through.

The movie is an extended account of one part of Ebert’s life featured briefly in the doc, his co-writing of the screenplay for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Russ Meyer‘s 1970 cult classic satire/sequel to Valley of the Dolls. Last summer, Will Ferrell was announced for the co-titular role of Russ, and now Josh Gad has been named to play Roger. Hollywood Elsewhere’s Jeff Wells scooped the news from producer David Permut at an event over the weekend, but there’s nothing official yet. The Wrap reports this morning that Gad has not signed on, nor has he even read the script, which is by Emmy-winning sitcom and sketch comedy writer Chris Cluess...

Among the many pleasures of the great Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself is the reminder - or, for some, the revelation - that before he was a titan of film criticism, Ebert wrote Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls for schlockmeister Russ Meyer. A new indie project, Russ & Roger Go Beyond aims to tell the story of that collaboration and Will Ferrell is seriously considering playing Meyer. The indie movie, written by Saturday Night Live and Simpsons veteran Christopher Cluess, focuses on Meyer's late 1960s desire to combine his pulp talents with big studio backing, hashing out a deal with 20th Century Fox boss Richard Zanuck to produce something for a low budget.Targeting soft-core tale Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, Meyer approached Ebert, then a low-on-the-roster film critic for the Chicago Sun Times, who had written one of the few positive reviews of a Meyer film. Despite the seeming gulf between their sensibilities,...

Will Ferrell is circling the role of soft core film producer Russ Meyer in "Russ & Roger Go Beyond," an indie film about the making of cult classic "Beyond The Valley of the Dolls".
The story is set in the very late 1960s when cheap counterculture films made big money. Meyer was the outlaw helmer of soft-core pulp films such as "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" but wanted to make a legitimate studio film.
At the time, 20th Century Fox was in desperate need of a low-cost, high returning hit after a series of flops. Meyer agreed to take on the film, originally a sequel to but ultimately a parody of the film adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's enormous hit "Valley of the Dolls".
There was one condition, that a third string movie critic at the time named Roger Ebert would pen the script. Ebert was one of the few people who...

Read on! For those who maybe aren't familiar with the project, here's the official synopsis: At the end of the 60’s when films like Easy Rider and Bonnie & Clyde were reaching new audiences, Meyer, the outlaw director of soft-core pulp films like Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill, Kill was given the...

Hollywood has been trying to bring the saga of Russ Meyer on the big screen, and why not? The filmmaker had an outsized life, and loved uh, outsized women, and put his own, weird mark on cinematic history. Way back in 2011, David O. Russell was planning a Russ Meyer biopic, written by “Lovelace” screenwriter Merritt Johnson, but that seems to have disappeared. However, last fall a new project popped up titled, "Russ & Roger Go Beyond," and it will detail one of most curious chapters in the lives of both Russ Meyer and legendary film critic Roger Ebert, with a big star eyeballing one of the lead roles. Deadline reports that Will Ferrell is circling the part of Russ Meyer in the Christopher Cluess (“The Simpsons,” “SNL”)-penned movie that will tell the tale of Ebert and Meyer, who traveled to Hollywood and the 20th Century Fox lot to write “Beyond Valley of the Dolls.

Years before At the Movies graced our televisions and “two thumbs up” ever entered our lexicon, Roger Ebert was still a third-string film critic at the Chicago Sun-Times who had a friend in filmmaker Russ Meyer. Now, their exploits as they teamed up to make Beyond the Valley of the Dolls are being brought to the big screen in Russ & Roger Go Beyond. The film, penned by Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons writer Christopher Cluess, focuses on the late 1960′s, when Meyer, already well-established as a master of pulp, decided to try his hand at a studio piece. Twentieth Century Fox handed him Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and he agreed under the condition that Ebert write the script; he was a huge Ebert fan, as Ebert had written one of the only positive reviews he had ever received. From there, it was a major battle to make the movie they wanted as opposed to...

SNL & "The Simpsons" scribe Christopher Cluess has sold his true story script "Russ and Roger Go Beyond" to Sobini Films, Permut Presentations and Chautauqua Entertainment.
The film will deal with the unique relationship between filmmaker Russ Meyer and legendary critic Roger Ebert during the making of the 1970 cult classic "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls".
The story is set at the end of the 1960s when Meyer was known for his soft-core pulp films like "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!".
Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox was coming off a string of flops and then studio head Richard Zanuck offered Meyer the directorship of 'Beyond'. The film was originally intended to be a sequel to 1967's adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls," but it ultimately became a parody of it.
Meyer agreed to the gig on the condition that budding young Chicago Sun Times film critic Ebert would write the script.
