CBS is bringing back Hollywood Squares.
The network announced Thursday that the reboot of the classic game show will launch in January, kicking off the midseason broadcast schedule.
Drew Barrymore is set to be the famed “center square” answering questions for the contestants.
Hollywood Squares involves two contestants who play tic-tac-toe to win money and prizes. The “board” for the game is a vertical stack of open-faced cubes, each occupied by a celebrity seated at a desk and facing the contestants. The celebrities are asked questions and the contestants judge the legitimacy of their answers to win the game.
Hollywood Squares is produced by Jesse Collins for Jesse Collins Entertainment and Drew Barrymore and Flower Films.
The original show aired on NBC in the 1960s. The series piloted in 1965 and debuted in its entirety on the same network in 1966.

Super Bowl halftime executive producer Jesse Collins says Usher’s performance Sunday proves that he “belongs on that musical Mount Rushmore.”
“He’s one of the elites,” Collins told The Hollywood Reporter moments after the Grammy-winning star performed at the big game near Las Vegas.
Usher’s performance featured high-energy dancing, strong singing, roller skates and more. Guests including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Lil Jon, will.i.am, H.E.R. and Jermaine Dupri, and Usher ran through hits like “U Got It Bad,” “Love in This Club,” “U Don’t Have to Call” and “Yeah!”
Collins said he told Usher: “I was like, ‘You got the spirit of Marvin and Michael and James Brown all inside, and all that comes together.’”
“[You’re] watching someone that truly seeks perfection,” Collins adds. “And you get this incredible performer that can sing and dance and captivate an audience, and I think he did all that tonight.

With Taylor Swift in the 65,000-strong crowd at Sunday’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Usher couldn’t have had any illusions about who had the greater star power and the media’s attention as he hit the field for the halftime show.
So, battling some initial microphone problems, the slick R&b singer and the producing team of Dps with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and Jesse Collins leaned in hard to the showmanship that Usher always has done best, and hoped for the best.
Hope was not enough, even when the ripped Usher stripped off his shirt halfway through and H.E.R. came out to offer some solid-gold guitar licks.
In no small part, H.E.R.’s extended stint onstage at Allegiant Stadium unveiled the staid mechanics of Sunday’s halftime show as it was clearly intended mainly to give Usher enough time for a costume change and the...

Emmys producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay had reason to be upbeat the morning after the kudocast: In what seems to be a rarity for awards shows these days, their production earned almost universally high marks from critics and viewers. For the 75th annual celebration, the Jesse Collins Entertainment trio leaned into nostalgia and the history of television to create a three-hour event that paid tribute to the small screen.
“It was ambitious, and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end,” Collins told Variety on Tuesday morning. Except for one thing: The 75th Emmys on Fox faced an NFL wild card game, as well as news coverage of the Iowa caucuses. There were rumors that the cast of Friends would show up at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards to pay tribute to the late Matthew Perry, but that didn’t happen.
Matthew did get the final spot in the In Memoriam segment that aired on Monday (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The Friends theme song was even played as the In Memoriam piece ended, but the five surviving cast members – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer – didn’t show up.
The producers of the Emmys telecast are now explaining why.

The husband-and-wife duo the War and Treaty will have a big presence during Grammy week, parlaying their nomination for best new artist into multiple performances on- and off-screen throughout the days leading up to and including the telecast. But the Grammys were destined not to be the only awards show this season that would afford them a high profile. On Monday night’s Emmys, the couple joined Charlie Puth for a properly emotional In Memoriam segment that segued from the country-soul duo offering harmonies on Puth’s elegiac “See You Again” to taking more of the lead on a balladic version of the “Friends” theme,” “I’ll Be There,” that took it from Rembrandts territory to the land of Ashford and Simpson.
And so did a significant portion of the viewing audience get in on what has sometimes seemed like the entertainment industry’s worst-kept secret: that the War and Treaty...

Monday’s Emmys ceremony paid tribute to late Friends star Matthew Perry — but in a night filled with nostalgic reunions, his Friends castmates were nowhere to be found.

Mission accomplished: Not only did the Emmys end on time, but several times throughout the telecast, it was actually ahead of schedule. Variety caught up with Emmys telecast producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay on Tuesday morning — just hours after wrapping the event — and all three felt gratified and relieved to have pulled off an Emmys befitting the kudocast’s 75th anniversary.
“Our intention was to create a love letter to television and to sprinkle in the reunions and the nostalgia throughout,” said Harmon. “It was received the way that we hoped it would be, so we’re glad it made everybody happy.”
Added Collins: “There was a definitely a little anxiety going into it, because we took some swings. It was ambitious and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end.”

All it took was a scan of social media or a few afterparty conversations on Monday night to learn that the 75th Primetime Emmys, delayed four months by the Hollywood strikes, were worth the wait.
The three-hour Fox telecast, which went over well with critics, was polished, moved at a nice clip, featured talent from decades of TV and, in contrast to the monologue drama at the Golden Globes just eight days earlier, saw host Anthony Anderson lauded for his efficient and warm navigation of what is so often a thankless job.
“Anthony was undeniably the host with the most,” said Allison Wallach, Fox Entertainment’s president of unscripted programming. “Those cast reunions and mind-blowing sets were beyond compare and the winner speeches were filled with heart and humor … and on time, thanks to the watchful and hilarious Mama Doris.”

“Succession” star Kieran Culkin won the Emmy on Monday night for outstanding actor in a drama series. The win was Culkin’s first Emmy for playing the younger Roman Roy on the hit HBO series, which ended its run last May after four seasons.
The actor used the moment to thank his costars, the show’s creators, his mother, his manager — and shoot his shot for more kids with his wife, Jazz Charton.
“And of course my beautiful wife, Jazz,” Culkin said at the end of his acceptance speech. “Thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf. I love you so many and so much. And Jazz, I want more.”
That line got big cheers, laughter and “oohs” from the audience. Culkin added, before walking off the stage: “You said! You said ‘maybe,’ if I win! I love you so much.

Fox is set to revive TV classics Grey’s Anatomy & The Sopranos for a special one-night event at the 75th Emmys on Monday, January 15. The ceremony, curated by Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, will pay homage to TV history across decades, featuring cast reunions from the 1950s to the present, per Variety. Notable stars like Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, and more will grace the stage, making it a memorable celebration of television’s diamond anniversary. “I think they’ll be talking about the ones that they may see on the screen,” Rouzan-Clay said of reunions. “Those are going to be a big talking point, a big watercooler moment, if you will. … It was a grand task to figure out how to celebrate 75 years of television. If we can bring some nostalgia to that stage, then I think that we’ve done a good deed.

Fox is bringing back two of its 1990s staples — “Martin” and “Ally McBeal” — for one night only. The two shows are among the roster of cast reunions planned for the 75th Emmys on Fox this Monday.
Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay have planned a ceremony that leans heavily on the history of TV, given the award’s diamond anniversary. Tributes and reunions will focus on decades from the 1950s to the present.
“I think they’ll be talking about the ones that they may see on the screen,” Rouzan-Clay says of the reunions. “Those are going to be a big talking point, a big watercooler moment, if you will. … It was a grand task to figure out how to celebrate 75 years of television. If we can bring some nostalgia to that stage,...

As November approaches, we’re now just a little more than two months away from the postponed Primetime Emmy Awards, currently scheduled to air January 15 on Fox. And yet, the network, Television Academy and producer Jesse Collins Entertainment have yet to name a host or hosts. At the risk of repeating myself, I will once again elevate my idea: Fox staples Ken Jeong and Joel McHale, along with their “Community” pal Yvette Nicole Brown. (Read my previous column about it here.)
And this time I have some backing: McHale himself. I recently got the most unusual pitch in my email: With the SAG-AFTRA strike ongoing, McHale can’t talk about the upcoming “Community” movie, his Fox sitcom “Animal Control,” or really, almost anything. But he can talk about Klondike ice cream bars.
What? It was a ridiculous pitch, but I knew it would be fun to get McHale on the...

Just hours after Lizzo was hit with a second lawsuit with claims of creating a hostile work environment, the star accepted the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition (Bmac) gala in Los Angeles.
After skipping the red carpet portion of the evening, Lizzo took the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel following an introduction by a group of her Big Grrrl dancers. Wiping away tears, she told the crowd, “I really needed this right now. God’s timing is on time.”
“I didn’t write a speech because I don’t know what to say in times like these,” Lizzo continued, thanking Bmac for the honor and noting that this award was different than others she has won because “humanitarianism in its nature is thankless, it’s selfless. To be kind to someone isn’t a talent; everyone can do it, it’s a gift that you give.

Kamala Harris invited some of rap’s top artists, from Lil Wayne to Slick Rick, to perform on Saturday at her home in Washington, D.C., for what she called “the first-ever hip-hop house party at the Office of the Vice President of the United States.”
Harris celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop from a stage built on her lawn with a guest list of rap luminaries, including Common, Doug E. Fresh, Mc Lyte and Fat Joe.
“Hip-hop is the ultimate American art form,” Harris told the audience. “Hip-hop now shapes nearly every aspect of America’s popular culture, and it reflects the incredible diversity and ingenuity of the American people. It combines rhythms from the continent of Africa, from the Caribbean, from Latin America, with the sounds of soul and gospel and R&b and funk to create something entirely new.”

The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes have taken a toll on the 75th Emmy Awards. Originally scheduled to take place on Monday, September 18, 2023 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live, the Television Academy and Fox have moved out of 2023 entirely and landed on a new January 15, 2024 date.
SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are no closer to striking deals with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Writers have been walking the picket lines for 100 days, and the actors officially joined them on July 14, 2023. Both SAG-AFTRA and WGA are seeking fair deals, including new guidelines for the use of AI and residual payments.

Originally scheduled for Monday, Sept. 18, the ceremony was postponed due to the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes, which currently have no end in sight. The Television Academy and Fox have today announced what many have long suspected: The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards have moved to January 2024 from September 2023, with the awards ceremony now set for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
While the change from the previously set date of September 18 is still a bit of wishful thinking, as both the WGA and SAG unions are still on strike and seeking to negotiate fair deals with the AMPTP, it does open up the schedule enough to where, should deals happen over the next couple of months, the TV Academy and Fox would likely still have time for the standard amount of pre-production needed to put on the awards telecast.
Unfortunately for the TV Academy, the move does strip the Emmys of its influence on the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the two other major TV awards that usually air in January. Should neither awards...

The fireworks in the sky on Tuesday night also made their way to Hollywood’s data desks.

The iconic Emmy statuette is getting a rare enhancement.
The TV Academy unveiled on Tuesday a subtle new look for this year’s Emmy statuette: an inscription of “75” at the base of the figurine. The enhancement will be added to the statuette for this year only amid the 75th anniversary of the award ceremony that celebrates and honors the best in television.
According to the Television Academy, it took 47 proposals for the first Emmy design before the 48th was accepted by the Television Academy. “This time it took us seemingly 48 weeks of meetings, illustrations, debates, false starts and ruminating to get to the finish line,” Scott Buford, senior creative director for the Television Academy, said in a statement.

“When I was first asked by the Academy’s leadership to explore altering the statuette, my first reaction was, ‘Are you sure? This is like giving a nip and tuck to the...

The Emmys have been here before. In 1980, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went on strike for three months. That year’s Emmy telecast happened to fall right in the middle of it.
Actors boycotted the ceremony, but for some reason, the TV Academy went ahead with the Emmy telecast anyway. Famously, only one out of 52 nominees attended: Powers Boothe, who said when accepting his trophy for playing cult leader Jim Jones: “This is either the most courageous moment of my career or the stupidest.”
Steve Allen and Dick Clark (both of whom donated their hosting fees to the SAG emergency fund) hosted that year’s ceremony after original hosts Michael Landon, Bob Newhart and Lee Remick bowed out due to the strike. Variety called that year’s show a “lackluster affair,” and noted that the TV Academy aimed to fill the...

However, before that, paparazzi managed to get photos of the little one during her British Vogue cover shoot without her consent, and she wasn’t happy about it.
Rihanna, who is expecting her second child with Aap Rocky, told the mag in a new interview, “It’s the thing you never want to happen,” […] “We get to decide as parents when and how we do that. End of story.”
