More essays have been written about "Citizen Kane" than any other movie (with the possible exceptions of "The Wizard of Oz" and "Star Wars"), so it feels churlish to recount the plot here, but for the uninitiated, however, here's a brief rundown:
A vicious newspaper tycoon named Charles Foster Kane (Welles) has died in bed, locked deep in his massive, palatial mansion. He clutched a snow globe in his hand in his final moments, moved by the sight of the swirling faux weather inside. He enigmatically whispers the word "Rosebud" before perishing. The film then shifts focus to a reporter (William Alland) who spends the film interviewing Kane's associates, wives, and lovers, hoping to get a full portrait of the man. He finds that Kane was a cad ruined by wealth and power. He finds that Kane was possessed of a deep and abiding unhappiness, likely spurred by having to...

“More stars than there are in heaven” was once the slogan for Hollywood’s largest studio. Larger-than-life celebrities like Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Jean Harlow and Gene Kelly were common fixtures at MGM. Today, MGM is an IP outpost purchased by Amazon for $8.5 billion in 2022, but in its day, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had the biggest lot in Hollywood and produced some of the most extravagant films. Located in Culver City, MGM’s famously sprawling lot began as it grew from the 40 acres owned by Samuel Goldwyn. The legendary MGM property was 3 miles long and housed more than 45 buildings and 14 stages, in addition to numerous outdoor sets that would be built over the years.
MGM was home to countless classic films, and in 1939 alone, the studio backed the timeless fantasy The Wizard of Oz and distributed the Oscar-winning Gone With the Wind, the Ernst Lubitsch/Greta Garbo comedy Ninotchka,...

The preview opening of the new exhibit Meet the Stars: 100 Years of MGM Studios and the Golden Age of Hollywood on Thursday night was a crowded, buzzing affair. Held at the Hollywood Heritage Museum in the historic Lasky DeMille Barn across from the Hollywood Bowl, the event showcased the items of over 20 movie collectors. Memorabilia hunters, dressed in fedoras and flirty ’40s dresses, gabbed about their latest finds with others who have a similar passion.
The highlight of the night was when the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to former MGM child star Cora Sue Collins (who played a little Greta Garbo in 1933’s Queen Christina), the last surviving MGM contract player from the 1930s. Sitting at a tableau that recreated a party thrown for her by MGM in 1935, Collins elegantly thanked everyone for their well wishes. Cari Beauchamp, the respected film historian who put readers and viewers in close touch with the early days of Hollywood through her painstaking research as an author, editor and documentary filmmaker, died Thursday. She was 74.
Beauchamp died of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, her son Jake Flynn told The Hollywood Reporter.
She was unable to attend an Oct. 28 event at the Tcl Chinese Theatre that celebrated authors represented on THR’s recent unveiling of “The 100 Greatest Film Books of All Time.”
Beauchamp is on the exclusive list thanks to Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood. First published in 1997, it centers on Marion, who became the highest-paid screenwriter, man or woman, in Hollywood by 1917 before receiving Oscars for The Big House (1930) and The Champ (1931).
Beauchamp then wrote and produced for TCM a 2001 documentary based on the book, earning a WGA nomination along the way.

Ever since she broke into the film industry with her role as one of the mean girls in “Mean Girls,” Amanda Seyfried has been making regular appearances in romantic comedies, thrillers and horror films. She recently co-starred in director David Fincher’s “Mank” playing the similarly doe-eyed Hollywood starlet Marion Davies. Let’s take a look at the highlights of this young star’s career in our gallery of her best movies.
Seyfried started her acting career in a few small roles in soap operas and TV. After “Mean Girls,” Seyfried appeared in several indie films, which lead to a role on the HBO series “Big Love,” about a secretly polygamous Mormon family in Utah. From there she won the starring role in the hit musical “Mamma Mia!,” and she has slowly become a familiar face on the big screen. She even nabbed a SAG Ensemble award nomination for her...

In the early 1940s, a young Lena Horne began an engagement at an intimate L.A. club called Little Troc, where her silken voice — with her perfect enunciation and her sophisticated interpretation of the lyrics — dazzled the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Cole Porter, Lana Turner and Greta Garbo. Among the many eyes that observed her during her run were those of the astute, sensitive Roger Edens, who was an integral member of the Freed Unit at MGM Studios. Led by innovative producer Arthur Freed, the unit consisted of musical artists who created many of MGM’s great musicals from the golden age: It had recently produced Babes in Arms (1939) and would strike gold with An American in Paris (1951), Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and Gigi (1958).
Within the Freed Unit, Edens stood out as a highly respected composer, arranger and associate producer who eventually won three Academy Awards. After seeing Lena perform,...

Viola Davis shines in Ben Affleck‘s “Air,” which tells the true story of how Nike signed Michael Jordan and made the Air Jordan shoe. Matt Damon portrays Nike marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro who negotiates a deal with Jordan’s mother. As Deloris Jordan, Davis deliver a powerful performance.
The actress imbues quiet strength, a sense of duty and honor, and a fierce motherly love into the stony exterior of an ambitious woman who knows her son’s worth and loves her family. It’s an enjoyable performance and it helps elevate the film from the average depths it likely would have sunken to without her. And critics agree.
Peter Travers (ABC News) explained: “Jordan himself insisted that only one actress could play his mom — Egot winner Viola Davis. Smart choice since the triumphant Davis is a primal force who powers the role of Deloris by nailing every nuance with maternal fire and feeling.

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live‘s Chloe Fineman is set to lead the comedy Big Time, which Jonathan Glickman’s Panoramic Media recently picked up.
The title short story is from Jen Spyra’s recent best-selling collection, and she’ll adapt it as her first feature film. Big Time follows a time-hopping, crass 1940s starlet who tries to claw her way to the top in modern-day Hollywood, despite being ridiculously unwoke. Fineman stars in the upcoming Paramount 5x Golden Globe nominated Damien Chazelle movie Babylon as Marion Davies.
”Look, Jon’s aces and Chloe’s the tops. Put your chips on Panoramic ‘cause this picture’s gonna hit harder than Joe Louis,” Spyra told Deadline, adding, “Sorry. I’ve been watching too many old movies. Jon and Roni are dream collaborators, and Chloe is a brilliant supertalent. I feel incredibly lucky to have found the right partners for Big Time.”

It’s pre-war Los Angeles and you’re a young and rather dashing British actor. You’re newly arrived in Hollywood and looking to make friends, and preferably ones who understand the importance of a properly made cup of tea. Look no further, then, than the Hollywood Cricket Club.
There you’ll find fellow famous Brits abroad such as David Niven, Boris Karloff and, thanks to the suspect nature of colonialism, an honorary Brit in the shape of Tasmanian-born Errol Flynn. Across the 1930s and 1940s, these stars (and more) could be counted on to drop by the club’s nets in their flawless whites. Cinema luminaries such as Cary Grant, Basil Rathbone, Ronald Colman and Leslie Howard would all also play for the team, while a young Elizabeth Taylor might be around to serve cream tea.
Like any sports team, each player brought their own distinct style to the game.

Amanda Seyfried has had a career-changing two years. The movie star has long been one of Hollywood’s most versatile actresses, from her roles in franchises like Mamma Mia! and her scene-stealing supporting performances in comedies like Mean Girls to her nuanced, subtle work in art house fare like First Reformed. But in 2021, with her portrayal of Hollywood starlet Marion Davies in David Fincher’s Mank, Seyfried earned her first Oscar nomination. And now, with Hulu’s The Dropout, Seyfried takes on her meatiest role yet (and has secured her first Emmy nomination), playing the charismatic, chameleonic and morally compromised Elizabeth Holmes.
Tackling Holmes was much less intimidating for Seyfried than taking on the role of Davies, she explains to THR. Seyfried had already binged a podcast about Holmes (the Hulu limited series is based on the ABC News podcast of the same...

It is safe to say that Amanda Seyfried has entered a new phase in her ever-evolving career. The actress, who got her start in such teen classics as “Mean Girls” and “Jennifer’s Body,” has lately taken on challenging projects that demand precision. Last year, she earned rave reviews for her heartbreaking performance as silent film star Marion Davies in “Mank,” resulting in her first Oscar nomination. Now, she is tackling another real-life person in the Hulu limited series “The Dropout,” garnering similarly rapturous praise that could lead to her attending some other award shows in the months to come.

Actress Amanda Seyfried is no stranger to entering the lives of real-life people. In her career she’s portrayed 1970s porn queen Linda Lovelace as well as one of the earliest stars of classic film, Marion Davies. Now, she’s playing tech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s new limited series, “The Dropout.” Holmes, recently found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, was the darling of Silicon Valley, alongside her company Theranos, which claimed to be able to take patients’ blood without using a syringe. The series, inspired by the podcast of the same name, charts Holmes’ rise and fall.

Seyfried plays Julie Davis — warm, kind, loving to her husband and child — who writes bestselling children’s books about unlocking your fears. At the 93rd Academy Awards, Mank‘s Erik Messerschmidt took home his first Oscar for Best Cinematography.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked director David Fincher “for creating an environment where we could do our best work,” expressing gratitude for the fact that he “got to go home and feel like I gave it my all, every night.”
He then thanked producer Ceán Chaffin for her “endless support,” screenwriter Eric Roth for his “guidance,” actors Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman and their fellow cast members “for hitting [their] marks,” as well as his collaborators in the camera department. “This really belongs to an extraordinary crew who I could not do anything without,” he said. “And thank you to my beautiful wife Naiara, who tolerates this crazy business and helped me get through this movie.”
While Messerschmidt had strong competition tonight in Nomadland‘s Joshua James Richards, he was also a top contender throughout awards season.

Production designer Donald Graham Burt and set decorator Jan Pascale took home statuettes for their work on Mank, at the Academy Awards on Sunday.
The Oscar win was Burt’s second, following his triumph in 2008 with David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. A first-time winner, set decorator Pascale was previously nominated in 2006, for her work on George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck.
While Burt didn’t give a speech, Pascale paid thanks to director David Fincher, producer Ceán Chaffin, and Burt “for trusting me with this amazing project.”
“It was such an honor to work with such an amazing group of people. Thank you to my crew, who worked their tails off on this just to make it right,” she said. “When I was young, I never realized that this was a career that was even a possibility. Chicago – The great Gary Oldman is a veteran actor who has created so many memorable roles that he’s his own Hall of Fame. His surprising turn as Herman Mankiewicz, the co-screenwriter with Orson Welles on “Citizen Kane” in “Mank,” is being honored by yet another Best Actor nomination in 2021 (his third with one win).
“Mank” follows Herman through the decade of the 1930s, when he hung out with William Randolph Hearst, the inspiration for Charles Foster Kane. His journey with Hearst and his crew, including the mogul’s mistress and notable actress Marion Davies, was the information gathering point for his contributions to the Kane script, whose main authorship is debated to this day. It’s a grand opera performance, with Mank being both a comic and tragic figure.

After a long career as a reliable familiar face in genre films, Amanda Seyfried has finally become a major awards contender for her performance in David Fincher’s Hollywood period piece “Mank.” Seyfried, who got her start as one of the mean girls in 2004’s “Mean Girls,” has appeared in everything from rom-coms (“Letters to Juliet”) to musicals (“Mamma Mia!”) to cult horror films (“Jennifer’s Body”), but “Mank” is a major step-up for the actress that earned her her first Oscar nomination.
In the Best Supporting Actress category, Seyfried competes against Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”) and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”). Youn and Bakalova are the other first-time nominees, while Close and Colman are Oscar veterans. Colman previously won for Best Actress in 2019, while Close’s eight nominations has her tied with Peter O’Toole for most nominations without a win.

Much like Citizen Kane itself, Mank could easily have been twice as long, at least. Clocking in at 131 minutes, David Fincher's black and white homage to old Hollywood focuses on the 60 days given to the brilliant, often besotted and infamously prickly scribe Herman J. Mankiewicz to churn out the script for Orson Welles' feature directorial debut. Those scenes of genius at war with itself are interspersed with behind-the-scenes studio politicking, actual politicking (left vs. right is not new) and Mankiewicz's conflicted friendship with Marion Davies, the longtime companion of publishing titan William Randolph Hearst, who was the fairly obvious...

The race for makeup and hair is particularly noteworthy this season. It includes transforming Viola Davis into the pioneering blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” turning Glenn Close into the fiery Appalachian grandmother of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adding floral flourishes to Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular matchmaker in “Emma,” meticulously recreating Hollywood’s Golden Age in black-and-white in “Mank,” and creating a unique wooden look to the titular puppet of “Pinocchio.”
But with the Academy tilting toward transforming real-life people in recent years, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” is the favorite, especially after its sweep of the coveted Muahs Guild Awards. Plus, Davis is the favorite in the Best Actress race. She landed her fourth Oscar nomination — the most of any Black actress — as the sexy, subversive Rainey. And the actress was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude with the help of gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair. She tapped her personal makeup stylist,...

The final voting for the Academy Awards officially closed at 5 p.m. Pt today. Speaking with multiple Academy voters, there’s something that needs to be stressed: this upcoming Oscars is a nail-biter and very close in multiple categories. With voting open for six days, it’s estimated and believed that anywhere from 20% to 30% of the Academy submitted their final ballots today, based on conversations with multiple voters and awards publicists.
AMPAS houses nearly 10,000 industry professionals from all over the world, and it’s nearly impossible to reach them all and gauge their tastes or know what they ultimately voted for. But based on a small sampling of voters, this awards race isn’t as “easy” to predict as many believe.
Based on multiple conversations with voters, there was a palpable surge for Florian Zeller’s “The Father” from Sony Pictures Classics. The film had been assumed to be teetering before the nominations announcement,...

The Oscar race for costume design is once again devoted to dazzling period pieces: George C. Wolfe’s August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (the Cdga period winner), Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma,” David Fincher’s monochromatic “Mank,” Niki Caro’s live-action “Mulan (the Cdga fantasy winner), and Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio.”
But “Ma Rainey’s” 89-year-old, Oscar-winning costume designer, Ann Roth (“The English Patient”) is the clear favorite. And it certainly helps that the momentum is with Viola Davis in the Best Actress race. This was her fourth Oscar nomination — the most for any Black actress. She plays the trailblazing ’20s blues singer, who flaunted her flashy wardrobe to convey a sexy, subversive image. Ross put Davis in a rubber suit modeled after Aretha Franklin, and assembled an array of bold and durable outfits (including flowing berry-red and blue velvet dresses). The cinematography race pits Joshua James Richards (“Nomadland”) against Erik Messerschmidt (“Mank”), Phedon Papamichael (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Dariusz Wolski (“News of the World”), and Sean Bobbitt (“Judas and the Black Messiah”). Of the five, only Papamichael has been previously nominated (for “Nebraska”). Although Messerschmidt won the coveted ASC award, Richards is the favorite for Chloé Zhao’s Best Picture frontrunner.
The momentum has been with Richards for “Nomadland” ever since he won Camerimage’s prestigious Golden Frog last year. In the recessionary road odyssey, the director’s go-to cinematographer offered a roving, naturalistic nod to Terrence Malick (with the Arri Alexa Mini), while capturing Frances McDormand’s journey through the landscapes of the American West in changing light. Magic hour was the time to capture her long walks alone (with the camera placed on the Ronin 2 gimbal).
In David Fincher’s “Mank,” Messerschmidt recreated a Golden Age of Hollywood in black-and-white.

Anyone preparing to work with David Fincher knows the legendarily fastidious director doesn’t do anything by halves, and those who signed up for his 10-time Oscar-nominated Hollywood homage Mank were not disappointed by his attention to detail. Filmed in luminous black and white and starring Gary Oldman, the film charts the genesis of the 1941 classic Citizen Kane from the perspective of its screenwriter, Herman J Mankiewicz.
Speaking during the Netflix panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees virtual event, cinematographer Eric Messerschmidt said he was “thrilled” to be able to take part in what he called “job of a lifetime.” He explained that the fine line between style and pastiche came up early on in the process: “We talked a lot about how to pay respect to movies of the past and bring the audience into that world without drawing too much attention to the way the movie looks.

For “Mank” star Amanda Seyfried, she keeps her phone on silent and turns off all her notifications, so when she received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress as Marion Davies in the David Fincher film, her publicist called her mother and woke her up with the good news.

In this week’s episode, Seyfried talks about working with David Fincher on his old Hollywood examination of one of the greatest films ever made, “Citizen Kane.” She also exclusively shares with Variety that she has sent in her recording of “Popular” from the hit musical “Wicked,” which is being helmed by Universal Pictures and “In the Heights” director Jon M. David Fincher’s “Mank” leads all Oscar craft nominations with six. And yet its greatest chance of a win rests with Don Burt’s meticulous production design of the iconic Hearst Castle and San Simeon compound. However, since he was working in black-and-white with set decorator Jan Pascale — his co-nominee — it was more advantageous to capture the spirit of William Randolph Hearst’s opulent retreat than trying to replicate it. For one thing, the colors would get lost, and, for another, they’d still be struggling to recreate all of the detail.
“Hearst Castle felt like something Hearst [Charles Dance] built as his Xanadu [from ‘Citizen Kane’], and now it’s maintained more like a theme park,” said Burt, who actually didn’t visit the landmark since they couldn’t shoot there. But he referenced plenty of images and studied its architecture and interior design along with the beautiful landscaping of San Simeon.

In 1993, Robert Downey Jr. made Oscar history as the first Best Actor nominee to be recognized for portraying a real-life past Oscar winner (Charlie Chaplin in “Chaplin”). Bryan Cranston became the second 23 years later when he earned a bid for playing Dalton Trumbo in “Trumbo.” Now, Gary Oldman (“Mank”) has joined the exclusive group, and he could be the first to follow in his character’s footsteps by pulling off a victory.
At the upcoming Academy Awards, Oldman faces off against Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), and Steven Yeun (“Minari”) in the race for Best Actor. Oldman previously won the award for “Darkest Hour” in 2018. Hopkins is also a past winner in the category for “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), while the remaining three are all first-timers.

No movie received more Oscar nominations in 2021 than David Fincher’s “Mank,” a Hollywood throwback about Herman Mankiewicz (Best Actor nominee Gary Oldman), Marion Davies (Best Supporting Actress nominee Amanda Seyfried), and the writing process behind Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane.” With 10 total nominations — including Best Picture, Best Director for Fincher, Best Actor for Oldman, Best Supporting Actress for Seyfried, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Hair & Makeup, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score — the lavish black-and-white Netflix film is just the 96th feature in Academy Awards history to receive double-digit citations and the second-most lauded Fincher effort behind only “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

Amanda Seyfried will play disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s “The Dropout,” replacing Kate McKinnon.
McKinnon, who is in the middle of Season 46 of “Saturday Night Live,” left the series earlier this year amid scheduling issues. Seyfried will also serve as a producer.
“The Dropout” tells the story of how Holmes raised hundreds of millions of dollars to fund Theranos and became a media darling, while hiding the fact that her touted blood-testing machine didn’t really work. Like her fellow Oscar-nominated colleagues, costume designer Trish Summerville had the rare opportunity of working in black-and-white on David Fincher’s “Mank,” which meticulously recaptured the Golden Age of Hollywood in the ’30s. But their work was made easier by the monochromatic settings on their iPhones, allowing them to instantly translate the proper color tones. This way, the look of Summerville’s wardrobes would be in sync with the sets and decor. It was all part of strategic plan to create an authentic-looking monochromatic world.
“I had conversations with [production designer] Don Burt about what his color palettes would be so we wouldn’t have the rooms be so colorful,” Summerville said. “We wanted to have the tones blend. For us in costumes, it was more burgundies, purples, navies, blacks. And you could pump up from there to gowns with muted lilacs or dusty roses, which came in as nice light grays.

As the awards calendar hurtles toward the delayed Oscars on April 25, we have a clear frontrunner for Best Picture. Last year, Bong Joon Ho’s dark drama “Parasite” rode the Palme d’Or from May through to a Best Picture win. But it was, finally, a global blockbuster that appealed to the mainstream.
That wasn’t an option this pandemic award season. Even if the list of 2021 Oscar contenders is smaller-scale and more independent than usual, the film that boasts wide appeal across the Academy’s 23 branches will finally take home the Best Picture Oscar. With six nominations including Best Picture, Actress, Director, Editor, Adapted Screenplay, and Cinematography, Chloé Zhao’s hybrid cinéma vérité “Nomadland” (Searchlight/Hulu) is the film that hits the lonely pandemic zeitgeist in this weird year — even if the film didn’t score the SAG Ensemble nomination that “Parasite” did in 2020. “Nomadland” did win the Venice...

As we head toward the Oscars, Netflix is trying to win a few of its 35 nominations. The streamer boasts two Supporting Actress contenders in a wide open category that does not include Globe winner Jodie Foster (“The Mauritanian”).
Signaling possible weakness for David Fincher’s “Mank,” Oscar newbie Amanda Seyfried did not land a SAG spot for her role as Marion Davies opposite Charles Dance as partner William Randolph Hearst in David Fincher’s “Mank” (Netflix), but she could win here. Long overdue Glenn Close (eight nominations) could finally score as Mawmaw, an Appalachian living in Ohio in Ron Howard’s controversial “Hillbilly Elegy.” Close will vie against past rival, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) as a daughter tangling with octogenarian Anthony Hopkins in Sundance drama “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics), who landed Globes, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations.
Also in the running is the critics’ fave and Cca winner,...
