Contrary to popular myth, Mama Cass Elliot did not die from choking on a ham sandwich, her daughter is keen for people to know.
On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the death of the songstress with the Mamas and the Papas, Elliot’s daughter Owen Elliot-Kugell has told the BBC, “There was a ham sandwich, but she didn’t eat it and she didn’t choke on it. So enough with the jokes.”
Mama Cass died aged 32 in the London flat of fellow singer Harry Nilsson in 1974, after she had finished a two-week run of performances at the London Palladium. The autopsy confirmed her case of death as a heart attack.
At the time, and in many cultural references since, it was reported that she had choked to death on a ham sandwich, which was found by her bedside.

Owen Elliot-Kugell, the daughter of late The Mamas & the Papas member Cass Elliot, is setting the record straight on her mother’s death in her new memoir, My Mama, Cass.
In July 1974, Cass passed away in London from a heart attack when Elliot-Kugell was 7-years-old, dying in her sleep at age 32. However, an urban legend spread claiming that the singer had died from choking on a ham sandwich.
“In my younger years, when people would talk to me about my mom, it was always about the stupid sandwich,” Elliot-Kugell told People magazine. “I would go over to kids’ houses after school and eventually one of their parents would ask me, ‘Did your mom really die choking on a ham sandwich?’ First of all, the chutzpah to say that to a child is just crazy but it happened a lot. So I felt it was my duty to figure out what that story was all about.

To the average listener hearing Jessica Pratt for the first time, it’s possible to mistake her for an artist from a different era. Her music sounds decades old, like an obscure artist unearthed from the dusty bin of a Midwestern antique shop. But this is not the Langley Schools Music Project, and Pratt is no Connie Converse. Born in 1987, the Los Angeles musician has been surprising people with her otherworldly indie folk since 2012. And now she’s returned with her fourth album, Here in the Pitch, out May 3 via Mexican Summer.

We all know that Danny Trejo has spent time in prison, with a criminal record going back to his youth and extending into the ‘60s, long before he got his acting going. And it was during one of his latter stints that Trejo came across a fella who had yet to get his music career off the ground: none other than Charles Manson, who himself was a career criminal when the two encountered each other. Fortunately, Trejo took a considerably different path than being responsible for maybe the most notorious murders of the century…but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a unique experience with the cult leader.
Danny Trejo recalled meeting Charles Manson in the early ‘60s and even offering him protection. In turn, Manson introduced Trejo to the ways of hypnosis. “There were three people in my cell, and when we found out Charlie could hypnotize us,...

I was 10 when I fell in love with Tommy Smothers, who succumbed to cancer on Tuesday at 86. He was my first television hero. He was funny, he was gentle, he was quietly outrageous. And for a pre-teen kid in the 1960s, he was everything I thought a grown-up should be.
Let me back up for a second to note that I was raised in a houseful of liberals bordering on radicals. My parents and siblings were all proudly antiwar when it came to Vietnam. My older sister was the kind who went to love-ins and hung with the hippies, possibly because she was a hippie herself. My mother would bake pot brownies that my sister took to the love-in. Me? I was too young to do much more than get taken along for the ride, but it was made abundantly clear that if I wanted to be a Richmond, I...

Tom Smothers, who with his younger brother Dick changed the face of comedy with their musical humor and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, died Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, following a cancer battle. The news was announced by the National Comedy Center, on behalf of Smothers’ family. He was 86.
Tom and Dick Smothers started out as folk musicians in the early ’60s, and soon discovered that, while they were not good enough to be professional musicians, the act worked if they mixed in comedy.
Dick Smothers said in a statement, “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another.

Less than two months after she hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the third time, Emma Stone picked up her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for “La La Land,” which soon led to a victory at the 2017 Academy Awards. As the star of “Poor Things,” she is now on a quest for a bookend trophy that would coincide with her recent entry into said NBC sketch series’ prestigious Five-Timers Club. Even if history doesn’t fully repeat itself, just being included in 2024’s lead actress lineup would give her the impressive distinction of being the only performer with multiple same-category Oscar bids directly linked to “SNL” hosting gigs.
Stone’s fifth official “SNL” appearance (not counting three mid-2010s cameos) occurred on December 2, just one day before the seventh anniversary of her fortuitous third outing. She had also previously served as emcee in October 2010, November 2011, and April 2019. This time, she began...

Owen Elliot-Kugell remembers the last time she saw her mom. It was the summer of 1974, and the seven-year-old was on an airplane departing London. Just like that scene in Almost Famous, Elliot-Kugell said goodbye through the window. “She puts my seat belt on and kisses me and says, ‘Look in the window,’” Elliot-Kugell tells Rolling Stone. “I’m going to go to the airport terminal, and I’m going to wave. Go wave! Go wave!’ That’s the last time I saw her.”

Graham Nash got to know John Lennon relatively well over the years. He understood that the Beatle’s personality was relatively caustic at first, but he managed to break through and establish a friendship. Because of this, Cass Elliot asked Nash about what Lennon was like. Nash answered honestly, which brought Elliot to tears.
Graham Nash told Cass Elliot that John Lennon might be mean to her
Nash was a fan of The Mamas and The Papas and was interested in Michelle Phillips, so he went to Western Records to meet the band. He wound up speaking to Elliot, though, who wanted to know about British rock music.
“Inside the studio, Michelle, John, and Denny were huddled around a microphone, putting an overdub on ‘Dancing Bear,'” Nash wrote in his book Wild Tales. “Michelle was every bit as advertised: gorgeous and sexy — but otherwise engaged — so I wound up talking with Cass.

Alex Lahey has made a new appearance on triple j’s “Like a Version” cover series, and this time, she’s offered an uplifting cover of Cass Elliot’s classic tune, “Make Your Own Kind of Music.” Watch a video of the performance below.
“This song goes out to anyone who feels like they can’t dress how they want to dress, or love who they want to love, or just feel like they can’t be themselves,” Lahey declared during a poignant, mid-song address to the camera. “You gotta make your own kind of music, and sing your own special song, because you’re special. And you’re special because you’re you.”
Speaking about the decision to cover Elliot’s 1969 version of the tune, Lahey explained that she was initially inspired by the song’s inclusion in the official trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. “It just kinda pops up in the zeitgeist,...

As has been revealed, the prosecutor on the case withheld a witness statement about that night, from someone who saw Mikey arguing with a white man, meaning that the supposed killer can’t be guilty. Remy, as a result, has started digging. The penultimate episode of the season saw him enlist Hana (Keisha Castle-Hughes) to find that witness, only known as Mama Cass. She was homeless and possibly a drug user. Hana did identify her: Cassie Fortner, sober now and running a Christian rehab clinic. And now, in our clip, Remy has tracked her down and identifies himself as the victim’s brother. “Like I said on the phone, the court is looking into this case again because new evidence has come up.

The Monkees may have started their music careers as a television show band. However, the prefab four quickly morphed into one of the most beloved groups of musicians of the 1960s. Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones broke records and became radio mainstays during that decade. However, some of their best songs never made the Billboard top 10. Here are 5 Monkees songs that should have been hits.

When the sad news of Burt Bacharach’s death came down Thursday morning, your first memories of the songwriting genius likely depended on your age. If you grew up in the Sixties, you probably remember the hits he wrote with Hal David for artists like Gene Pitney, Dionne Warwick, and B.J. Thomas. Children of the Eighties are likely more familiar with Christoper Cross’ “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” Neil Diamond’s “Heartlight,” and the Dionne Warwick charity single “That’s What Friends Are For.”

Refresh for updates… Stephen Stills has joined his former bandmate Graham Nash in paying tribute to David Crosby, who died Thursday at 81.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Stills said:
I read a quote in this morning’s paper attributed to compose Gustav Mahler that stopped me for a moment:
“Death has, on placid cat’s paws, entered the room.”
I shoulda known something was up.
David and I butted heads a lot over time, but they were mostly glancing blows, yet still left us numb skulls..
I was happy to be at peace with him.
He was without question a giant of a musician, and his harmonic sensibilities were nothing short of genius.
The glue that held us together as our vocals soared, like Icarus, towards the sun.
I am deeply saddened at his passing and shall miss him beyond measure.”

Michelle Phillips, the lone survivor of 1960s Mamas & the Papas has opened up about the band’s dark history.
Formed in 1965, the four-piece folk-rock group – comprised of Michelle, John Phillips, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty, and best known for their hits “California Dreamin’” and “Monday, Monday” – shared a wealth of melodrama that would eventually contribute to their 1968 breakup.
In a wide-ranging new interview with Rolling Stone, 78-year-old Michelle revealed new truths about the band’s dramatic love quadrangle, her former marriage with John and his alleged incestuous relationship with daughter Mackenzie – whom he shared with his first wife Susan Adams.
After meeting years before the band’s establishment, John and Michelle got married. However, later during the group’s active years, she engaged in an affair with Doherty.

There’s a modest home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Cheviot Hills, with a stucco roof, a jacaranda tree out front, and a 1989 Mercedes 560Sl in perfect condition resting in the driveway. Beyond a front porch with wind chimes and a couch pillow that reads “This is our happy place,” past a kitchen with copper pots hanging above the sink, you’ll find a living room with a floral stained-glass lamp standing in a corner. It’s the very lamp that Michelle Phillips seized from her Bel Air mansion...

One day when Graham Nash was 10 years old, the police knocked on his family home in Salford, England, and said there was a problem with the camera Nash’s father had recently gifted him. “They told him that the camera had been stolen, and who was it that sold it to him?” Nash recalls. “It’s the same all over the world: You don’t rat your friends out to the police. You just don’t. So they put him on trial and they found him guilty, and then he...

Billie Hayes, an actress who starred as the wacky villain Witchiepoo on the beloved 1969-70 children’s series “H.R. Pufnstuf,” died Thursday at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. She was 96.
Hayes’ family announced her death on Monday.
By the time she was squaring off with a psychedelic dragon over a talking flute on “H.R. Pufnstuf,” Hayes was already an established comic actress. She made her Broadway debut in 1956 in the ensemble cast of the aptly titled “New Faces of 1956,” which also featured a young Maggie Smith. That same year, Hayes originated the role of Mammy Yokum in the musical “Li’l Abner” and went on to star in the show’s 1961 film version.
However, it was Hayes’ cackling, conniving performance as Witchiepoo (short for Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo) that captured the imaginations of children across the country. Just 44 at the time of shooting,...

One night in 1971, J.D. Souther stopped by a small club on Melrose Avenue at the urging of David Geffen. “I was just complaining about how stupid most pop artists are and how most songwriting doesn’t really get much beneath the surface,” Souther, who co-wrote several of the Eagles’ biggest hits, recalls with a laugh. “And he said, ‘Go see this girl I just signed, Judee Sill.’”
Souther found a seat in the crowd, and placed his eyes on a 27-year-old musician with long honey-blond hair and round wire-rim eyeglasses holding an acoustic guitar.

Rock star David Crosby likens it to Paris in the 1930s, or even the Italian Renaissance.
The creative flowering that grew out of the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles in the 1960s produced some of the greatest music of that or any other era, changing the culture and the lives of some of rock & roll’s most gifted talents.
“We used to call it Oz,” remembers Johnny Echols of the band Love.
“It’s little rabbit runs,” Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas tells Deadline of the neighborhood that threads through the Hollywood Hills. “Everyone was very accessible. All you had to do was walk down the street and you were at somebody’s house and they had a guitar or a piano. It was very communal.”

Epix’s two-part docuseries Laurel Canyon, directed by Alison Elwood, explores the musical community which nestled into the wooded area right outside the Sunset Strip. Chris Hillman, the first member of The Byrds, moved in after creating folk rock. The Monkees’ Mickey Dolenz threw ping pong tournaments next door to Alice Cooper. Frank Zappa planted his freak flag on the corner of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Lookout Mountain. And Michelle Phillips and John Phillips moved onto Lookout Mountain in 1965.
Their band, The Mamas and the Papas, practically invented the Southern California hippie sound, and Michelle was the catalyst. After hearing John Sebastian strum a tune which would become a major hit for his band The Lovin’ Spoonful, Michelle saw the direction the New Journeymen–the band she was in with her husband and other future Papa Denny Doherty–should go. Both sonically and geographically.

Forty-five years ago today, the world lost “Mama” Cass Elliot, member of the Mamas and the Papas and a pivotal figure in the 1960s California rock scene. She was found dead at the infamous 1 Curzon Place, a London apartment that Harry Nilsson had rented out to the star. (Four years later, Keith Moon would die in the same apartment, also at 32 years old.)
Contrary to a nasty urban legend, Elliot did not die from choking on a ham sandwich, which London celebrity doctor Anthony Greenburgh originally told the Daily Express.

Before Charles Manson — who died on Sunday at age 83 — and his murderous “family” of followers embarked on a plan to kill famous people in the ’60s, the group sought out celebrities as friends, roommates and professional connections.
Manson was drawn to the famous and glamorous, biographer Jeff Guinn explains to People: “Manson fully intended to become the most famous rock ’n’ roll star in history” — and he worked to connect with those who he believed could aid his career.
