Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. From comedy classics, to bruising turn-of-the-century tales of brutality and crime, to contemporary subversions of the genre formula, we’ve covered all bases. These are films of culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an 'ot dog,...

Classic 1990s comedy chat show The Kumars is returning to television, here are the details.
In the 1990s, there were two shows which brought black British comedy into the mainstream. The first was The Real McCoy, a sketch show which launched the television careers of double acts Curtis Walker and Ishmael Thomas, and Llewella Gideon and Collette Johnson. Later series featured Robbie Gee, Eddie Nestor, Judith Jacob, Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Syal and the much missed Felix Dexter, amongst others.
The second series was sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, which premiered on the BBC in 1997. Taking an irreverent look at Asian-British experience, the series is probably best known for the now iconic ‘Going For An English’ sketch, which poked fun at the stereotypical British experience of going for a curry, but flipping races to an Indian family going out for bland English food.

The title of fourth of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe films, Alex Wheatle, practically begs of an addendum: It could just as well start with The Miseducation Of. Or, rather, reeducation. The Alex Wheatle that we meet up top, played by Sheyi Cole, is a man who at one point knew almost nothing. He doesn’t know how to take care of his hair. He doesn’t know about Babylon — which is to say, a Britain whose prime quality is its imperial evil. He doesn’t know about cops and why to avoid them,...

Alex Wheatle, the fourth entry in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology, offers a modest take on the process of unlearning cultural attitudes and biases through the eyes of a naïve teenager. In 1980, Alex Wheatle moves to a social services hostel in Brixton after spending his childhood in a group home, where he was subject to constant abuse from his white peers and caretaker. In Brixton, however, Wheatle finds himself immersed in the Black British community, from which he was displaced growing up in all-white Surrey, where he slowly but surely assimilates the patois, fashion, and most importantly, music of his culture. He quickly witnesses the casual daily oppression his community faces at the hands of the police and participates in the 1981 Brixton uprising for which he is imprisoned.

In “Alex Wheatle,” the fourth of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe films, we meet a young man who seems, quite literally, to have come from nothing. Alex (Sheyi Cole), born to Jamaican parents in 1963, was abandoned by his mother, and his father gave him over to the British social-services bureaucracy — which means that he grows up, in essence, as a Dickensian orphan. We see him in a home for boys, run by an “auntie” who’s a nasty piece of work; she reacts to the fact that Alex wets his bed by shoving the urine-soaked sheets into his mouth. The cruelty is palpable, but it’s not until a scene or two later, when the 18-year-old Alex gets throws in jail, that we see what it truly means to be a lost soul.

Steve McQueen’s Alex Wheatle, co-written with Alastair Siddons, shot by Shabier Kirchner with costumes by Jacqueline Durran is episode 4 of his Small Axe anthology. The title character ((Sheyi Cole) is brought to a prison cell where a foul smell awaits him, courtesy of his bunkmate Simeon (Robbie Gee). Remember how Peter Morgan in the very first scene of the first episode of season one of The Crown, directed by Stephen Daldry, repels us with the blood-spitting King George VI (Jared Harris), only to pull us in even more soon after? McQueen is equally good at provoking visceral reactions from the audience. Franco Rosso’s 1980 Babylon, starring Brinsley Forde with music by Dennis Bovell...

Steve McQueen’s five-film “Small Axe” series was conceived to spotlight underrepresented stories of West Indian Londoners, from the thrill of a 1980 house party in “Lovers Rock” to the tumultuous civil rights battle of “Mangrove.” With “Alex Wheatle,” McQueen centers on a subject whose mission syncs with the project as a whole. In this hourlong origin story about the British Jamaican young adult novelist who found his calling after the 1981 Brixton riot, McQueen and co-writer Alastair Siddons have produced
Compared to some of the other “Small Axe” entries, “Alex Wheatle” occupies a somewhat awkward position within the film and TV media boundary that the anthology pushes up against: It’s not episodic, but feels more like the first act of a larger story begging for further exploration. Nevertheless, with a complex, ever-evolving turn by newcomer Sheyi Cole at its center, the story it does offer up turns on McQueen’s...

“You can’t look forward without looking back.” That’s a valuable piece of advice given to the protagonist of “Alex Wheatle,” but it’s also a summation of what director and co-writer Steve McQueen is doing with his extraordinary “Small Axe” series.
With its vivid portrayals of the horrors of institutionalization, “Alex Wheatle” is perhaps most reminiscent — so far — of the McQueen audiences have come to know in films like “Hunger” and “12 Years a Slave.” But even as its lead character endures physical and psychological torment at the hands of authorities, the film is very much of a piece with the ebullience of “Small Axe,” as the ongoing themes of community, music and defiance play a huge role in the story.
The real-life Wheatle published his first novel in 1999, but the film begins in 1981, with Alex going to prison for his role in the Brixton Riots, in which...

‘If you are the big tree, we are the small axe’
Made famous by Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1973 song ‘Small Axe’, that’s the traditional proverb behind the title for a five-film series by Oscar-winning British director Steve McQueen.
Two of McQueen’s Small Axe films were selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and in October, one opened the 64th London Film Festival. Now, all five are coming straight to BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and Amazon Prime Video around the world. The home release has nothing to do with the pandemic; it was always the plan for these feature-length films with a cast including Star Wars’ John Boyega and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, to air for a mainstream audience on prime time UK television.

Deployment day has arrived for the Flitcroft barracks. The soldiers are off to Afghanistan for a six-month stint while their spouses are left behind to raise families and attempt to stay sane. In a bid to help distract from the unavoidable worry, group activities are commonly brainstormed and executed for anyone interested in joining. And being the military, it should be no surprise that a rank-and-file hierarchy is adopted on that front too regardless of whether those forced into authority positions actually want them. As wife to the senior officer, Kate (Kristin Scott Thomas) always had. She enjoys the power it affords and the divisionary routine. With the recent promotion of Lisa’s (Sharon Horgan) husband, however, the duty now falls into her less regimented and more free-spirited hands.

"The Panthers... You shall all be warriors once more!" 20th Century Fox UK has unveiled an official trailer for a feel-good, cheesy comedy titled Walk Like A Panther, which opens in UK cinemas in March (but no Us release planned yet). The film stars Stephen Graham and Dave Johns (the lead of I, Daniel Blake) as a father-son duo who must team up to help save their local pub when it's threatened. They gather up their old wrestling friends to put on one big show dressed up in their goofy 80's wrestling costumes to make extra money for the pub. The cast includes Stephen Marcus, Julian Sands, Jill Halfpenny, Christopher Fairbank, Robbie Gee, Sue Johnston, plus Stephen Tompkinson, along with Lena Headey and Jason Flemyng. This looks sort of fun, I guess. If this kind of British humor is your thing, then have at it. Here's the official UK trailer...

When (or if) you think of urban UK film, you may immediately think Noel Clarke. However, while he may be the biggest fish, Clarke isn’t the only one swimming in that pool. Based on the cult novel of the same name by Q (aka Ashanti Power, aka Kwabena Manso), two years ago, Deadmeat won awards on both sides of the pond, Best British Feature at the Bfm Film Festival (London, UK), as well as an Accolade Award for Excellence (Hollywood, Us) and is now due to be released on DVD this week… in the UK, anyway.

There is no mistaking the fact that "Mean Machine" comes from the same production company behind the hit British crime films "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch". Not only do the casts and dialogue feel very familiar, but all these films are very much for British lads. The simple, often quite brutal entertainment of "Mean Machine" will probably find a strong theatrical life in the United Kingdom and could be an appealing video release in other territories.
Soccer player-turned-actor Vinnie Jones is almost an iconic figure in the United Kingdom, with a reputation for toughness that has transferred to his film roles. He made his debut with "Lock, Stock" as a tough enforcer, developed his skills (as a tough enforcer) in "Snatch", then played tough enforcers in "Swordfish" and "Gone in 60 Seconds". In "Mean Machine", he finally gets to tackle more than a few lines of dialogue.
He is stepping into the boots of Burt Reynolds, however. "Mean Machine" is adapted from the 1974 film "The Longest Yard", in which Reynolds played a footballer (of the NFL variety, however), sent to jail, who trains the prison team to take on the guards. Jones does not have the natural comedy skills of Reynolds nor the star quality, but he does offer a brutal form of charisma.
In "Mean Machine", Jones plays Danny Meehan, a former captain of the England team (though in real life Jones played for the Welsh national team), a man who had it all until he was banned following accusations of fixing an England vs. Germany match. Following a drunken assault on two policemen, he is jailed for three years at the tough HM Longmarsh Prison.
Here he finds that celebrity gets you nowhere, especially since he is regarded as a traitor for fixing a match against Germany, the old footballing enemy. The Governor (David Hemmings), though, has other plans. He wants Danny to train his prison guards soccer team. Siding with the Governor would be a big mistake, so Danny offers to train a team of cons to play against the guards as a preseason warm-up.
Danny finally wins over the tough inmates, especially when he saves a small con nicknamed Massive (Vas Blackwood) from a beating by the guards. Gradually, he puts a team together. Cue a series of amusing scenes of the inmates going through training sessions, consisting mainly of them missing the ball. With the help of the infamous Broadhurst Monk (Jason Statham), a psychotic inmate who is recruited as goalkeeper, the team is lectured in the dirtiest tactics known to soccer.
The big match offers plenty of drama. Danny is told by the Governor that unless he throws the match and allows the prison guards to win, he will be framed for another offense and locked up for even more years.
Excellent performances by veteran actor David Kelly ("Waking Ned Devine"), Danny Dyer, Blackwood and Robbie Gee as fellow prisoners give the film the appropriate atmosphere. Hemmings has fun as the Governor, though as with "Gladiator", his performance tends to be dominated by his bushy eyebrows. Sally Phillips ("Bridget Jones's Diary") has the unfortunate job of being the sole woman in the film, with the seduction of Jones her only job.
Soccer has never really made it on the big screen as it doesn't really lend itself cinematically. Debuting director Barry Skolnick does make a fine attempt at giving the match suitable energy, and Jones at least does know how to look like a soccer player.
"Mean Machine" offers no real surprises, and probably should have upped the comedy level.

An intern hired for the last week of filming on Guy Ritchie's new movie Snatch (2000) has a special souvenir from the set - the $600 fine box. The lucky lad won a raffle on the last day of the shoot and picked up the booty, collected for all manner of minor offences throughout filming. One of the film's stars Lennie James says, "The fines started when the cast and crew grew weary of Madonna's constant phone calls to Guy during filming and imposed a fining system for each time she rang." But Guy refused to be the only one fined on set. Robbie Gee, who also stars in the movie, explains, "He didn't want to be fined on his own so he started imposing fines on us too. Then everyone decided to impose fines on everyone else. "If someone pushed in front of you in the lunch queue, someone would shout, 'Someone fine this person.' By the end of filming we had a fine box worth $600, so we raffled it off and the kid who was doing work experience for the week won it. I can't even remember his name."...
