When it was announced that despite playing the Caped Crusader in Joel Schumacher’s 1996 epic Batman Forever, Val Kilmer won’t return for the sequel Batman & Robin, it was a sure sign that something had gone amiss for the actor. Kilmer had solidified his reputation for being difficult to work with, ever since his rise to fame in the comedy Top Secret! (1984).

Therefore, despite his iconic portrayal of Batman in the 1996 movie, Joel Schumacher claimed that Val Kilmer’s behind-the-scenes behavior was reportedly far from heroic. Having constant fallout with the filmmaker while working on the DC project, Kilmer was thus called out by Schumacher, for his prickly attitude and childish behavior.

Is it fair to say that "Tombstone" is one of the best Westerns ever made? At the very least, it's definitely one of the best modern Westerns. Directed by George P. Cosmatos, the stylish, violent saga tells the story of Wyatt Earp and the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Kurt Russell and his glorious mustache stars as Earp, with Val Kilmer stealing the entire movie as Earp's sickly buddy, Doc Holliday. The stacked cast also includes Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Dana Delany, Michael Rooker, Billy Zane, Charlton Heston, and a voice cameo from Robert Mitchum.
When you make a Western, certain accoutrements are baked into the material. We're talking pistols, cowboy boots, big ol' hats, and of course, horses. Kurt Russell sat down with Esquire for a career-spanning interview, and during the course of the conversation, the actor fondly recalled his time working with his horse on "Tombstone.

At its core, John Sturges’s Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is another retelling of the exploits of Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas) where the facts are buried under layers of myth. Doc is introduced as a surly card sharp and drunk, and he’s ultimately steered out of trouble by Wyatt. This is a different approach from John Ford’s My Darling Clementine, in which Doc doesn’t appear until well into the film and is a public nuisance to Wyatt and others. By initially focusing on Doc, who’s more receptive to Wyatt’s council here, the film winds up giving the men equal footing as protagonists, making this something closer to a buddy picture.

Based on the Idw comic book by Beau Smith, the Syfy series Wynonna Earp was “a fast-paced, contemporary thriller” that followed Wyatt Earp’s great-granddaughter as “she battles demons and other supernatural beings. Wynonna is a witty and wild modern day gunslinger, using her unique abilities and a dysfunctional posse of allies to bring the paranormal to justice.” The show did well, running for four seasons and 49 episodes from 2016 to 2021. Three years later, it’s set to get a 90 minute follow-up special called Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, which will be released through the Tubi streaming service.
Vanity Fair broke the news of the follow-up special, which has been written by the show’s creator and executive producer, Emily Andras. They were also able to confirm that Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna herself), Tim Rozon (Doc Holliday), Dom Provost-Chalkley (Waverly Earp), and Katherine Barrell (Nicole Haught) are all reprising their roles, and “other familiar...

Dennis Quaid spent the entirety of the 1980s on the cusp of movie stardom. He popped as a cocksure Indiana yokel in Peter Yates' 1979 underdog drama "Breaking Away," commencing a flirtation that bopped from Mercury Seven astronaut Gordon Cooper in "The Right Stuff" to corrupt New Orleans cop Remy McSwain in "The Big Easy" to The Killer himself, Jerry Lee Lewis, in "Great Balls of Fire." Hollywood thought it knew what to do with Dennis Quaid, but the troublemaking Texan armed with a million-dollar grin had other ideas.
Quaid was cut from the same restless cloth as Jeff Bridges. He's a movie star with an actor's temperament. He could show up on set, hit his marks, flash that come-and-get-it smile and cash an eight-figure check, but in the prime of his career he sought out audience-unfriendly areas of discomfort via decidedly unheroic characters. Genericization is what happens when a trademarked brand name becomes so ubiquitous that folks start using the name as an umbrella term for all similar products within its niche. From “Aspirin” to “Ziploc” bags, this process is usually only achieved once a company has completely cornered a market, with some brand names often outlasting the companies that created them.
In the world of videogames, we see this a lot in terms of defining new genres. While the industry tends to eventually settle on a brand-neutral standard, many critics initially resort to comparing games to the most popular example of their genre, coining terms like “Souls-like” and “Doom-clone” to describe gameplay. And long before “Survival Horror” had been popularized as a genre descriptor, most gamers referred to resource-management-oriented horror titles as “Resident Evil Clones.”

Actors doing the absolute most in commitment to their character have a long history in the film industry. To achieve his coyote-esque look in Dan Gilroy's 2014 neo-noir "Nightcrawler," Jake Gyllenhaal dropped 30 pounds, while Christian Bale's extreme weight loss to play a boxer dealing with drug addiction in 2010's "The Fighter" earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his troubles. A comedic scene in Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" wasn't working until Jonah Hill took a real sock in the jaw from co-star Jon Bernthal. But men aren't the only ones unafraid of getting physical for their roles; for John Sturges' western classic "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," Jo Van Fleet requested help from her co-star, a pre-"Spartacus" Kirk Douglas, to galvanize her for a tense scene by hitting her across the face.

Kirk Douglas And Burt Lancaster's Laughter Cost Gunfight At The O.K Corral An Entire Day Of Shooting
In his autobiography, "The Ragman's Son," "Spartacus" star and cinema luminary Kirk Douglas makes much of his longtime friendship with the hulking legendary actor Burt Lancaster. The two first worked together on Lisabeth Scott's 1947 noir classic "I Walk Alone," which sees Lancaster's convict battle his former bootlegging, currently two-timing business partner (Douglas).
Their second big-screen pairing was in "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," a John Sturges Western chronicling the storied 1881 Tombstone, Arizona shootout. Therein, Douglas would play the ailing gunslinger Doc Holliday to Lancaster's tenacious Wyatt Earp, two tough men whose tense alliance would blossom into diehard loyalty. Though the duo would go on to star in a handful of movies together it was on the set of the 1957 American Western where the two actors really hit it off.
"The Ragman's Son" carries the details of production, a shoot largely oscillating between the historically-relevant location of Tucson, Arizona, and Paramount Studio sets back in California.

For Kirk Douglas, "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" was a breath of fresh air amid military man roles in the likes of "Top Secret Affair" and Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory." Opposite Burt Lancaster's mythical lawman Wyatt Earp, gunslinger Doc Holliday was resolute but ill, a former dentist with a telltale cough that followed him throughout the 122-minutes of runtime. In his autobiography "The Ragman's Son," Douglas makes it clear that he was into Leon Uris' script not so much as a loose historical account but as "an interesting relationship between two men."
Both men –- Lancaster and Douglas –- had some history with "Gunfight" producer Hal Wallis, whose Best Picture Academy Award for "Casablanca" had been on his mantle for over a decade by this time. The pair previously starred in Lizabeth Scott's '47 noir classic "I Walk Alone," backed by Wallis. Wallis eventually parted ways...

Kurt Russell is the preeminent example of gruff, masculine swagger, injecting his performances with a vigorous presence no matter the role. Considering all of his muscly, mustachioed charms, it's a wonder that he hasn't been in more Westerns. That could be simply because films about the frontier aren't quite as common now as they used to be, but the actor takes his choice of roles in the genre seriously. Both "Tombstone" and 2015's "Bone Tomahawk" appealed to Russell, not because of their brutal action, but because of their dialogue, both refreshing to him in their own unique ways.
To be fair, Westerns have inspired Russell's roles, even if the films themselves weren't strictly in the Western genre. There's no mistaking that Snake Plissken in "Escape from New York" is at least partly an impression of Clint Eastwood's The Man with No Name, and Russell's role as Jack Burton in...

There isn't a single historical figure of the 19th century whose life has been more mythologized via motion pictures than Wyatt Earp. Several great Westerns have been dedicated to his exploits. John Ford's "My Darling Clementine," John Sturges' "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," and George P. Cosmatos' "Tombstone" are widely considered the best of the bunch. As for Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp," a three-hour, swing-for-the-bleachers epic that hit theaters six months after the release of "Tombstone," the consensus holds that it is a film in search of a greater purpose. It's the whole Earp story, but to what end?
One of the most fascinating facets of Earp's life is that he moved to Los Angeles, and served as a technical advisor on silent Westerns made by Tom Mix and John Ford. You'd think a cinephile like Kasdan would want to delve into this subject with antiheroic vigor,...

When "Tombstone" trotted into theaters just before Christmas day in 1993, families all over the country flocking to see the action Western were probably completely unaware of just how much of a struggle it was to get the film made. The original screenwriter Kevin Jarre ("Glory") had a highly quotable script that he had every attention of directing himself. After Jarre's own screenplay for "Dracula" was nixed by Universal in reaction to Francis Ford Coppola's intention to direct his own version, there was a risk that "Tombstone" would suffer the same fate after Kevin Costner announced that he and Warner Bros. were moving forward with the sprawling epic "Wyatt Earp."
"Tombstone" had the advantage and about six months of lead time, but Costner was sucking up all the oxygen by securing top-tier actors Dennis Quaid and Gene Hackman. Fortunately, Kurt Russell got hold of Jarre's script and quickly signed on...

John Ford may forever be considered the king of the Western genre. However, mimicking his style in the 1990s proved to be costly for writer and first-time director Kevin Jarre. After penning the screenplay for "Tombstone" Jarre was also hired to direct the 1993 Western. But soon after production started, trouble rode into town.
At the time, Entertainment Weekly noted several issues plaguing the film, including a bloated script that didn't match the production time allotted by the studio. Producer James Jacks opined that the novice director was shooting the film like a John Ford Western, outdated for the era. Actor Sam Elliot, who played Virgil Earp, had harsher words for Jarre. "I knew from the third day Kevin couldn't direct," Elliott said. "He wasn't getting the shots he needed."

"The picture that couldn't be stopped!" trumpeted the tagline for "The Outlaw," Howard Hughes' fictional tale of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, with Doc Holliday and a little of Jane Russell's cleavage thrown in for good measure. The latter made the film one of the most controversial pictures of its day, and it would take the Hollywood mogul five years to secure the movie a wide release.
Producer and director Hughes had no qualms about using Russell's sex appeal to sell his movie; when it came to picking a young starlet to play her part from a nationwide casting call, Hughes chose Russell because her bust was the most to his liking. Much of the publicity was focused on the 19-year-old making her screen debut, resulting in one of the most famous and controversial images of '40s Hollywood: Jane Russell reclining in a haystack with a gun in her hand,...

One trade secret that actors often use to prepare for biography pictures is to spend time with the person they are portraying. Leonardo DiCaprio secretly spent several days with Frank Abagnale to prepare for "Catch Me If You Can," and Tony Mendez took Ben Affleck to some old CIA hangout spots during his preparation for "Argo."
But what if the character you're playing died 140 years ago in the Wild West? That was a question Val Kilmer had to answer when he played Doc Holliday in the 1993 Western "Tombstone." Disney will soon unleash its latest IP redo as Warwick Davis' Willow Ufgood returns to the spotlight after more than 30 years. The plucky "Nelwyn" had a good go at winning the hearts of the movie-going public back in 1988 but couldn't quite hit the level of popularity, or box office returns, that creator George Lucas and director Ron Howard were hoping for. And so, aside from a trilogy of sequel novels in the '90s, the character of Willow was left untouched since his movie debut.
In the interim, "Willow" gained a cult following — a following that included writer/producer Jon Kasdan who took it upon himself to bring Willow back into all our lives with the upcoming Disney+ show. A big fan of the original movie, Kasdan always intended to not only give Davis' Willow a second chance, but also his co-star Val Kilmer, who will figure into the new series in some form.

Howard Hughes's deliriously ahistorical "The Outlaw" is probably best known for star Jane Russell's brassiere, which the director painstakingly designed to accentuate her 38Dd bosom. Never mind that Russell claimed she wore it all of a few minutes, loathed the fit, and padded her own bra the old-fashioned way; the undergarment is still on display in a Hollywood museum -- the, er, stuff of showbiz legend.
The film itself is an agreeably campy Western. Doc Holliday (Walter Huston) rides into Lincoln, New Mexico looking to recover his stolen horses. He tells his friend Pat Garrett (Thomas Mitchell) that Billy the Kid (Jack Buetel) is the thief, which sets up a not-terribly-understated homoerotic love triangle. It's a goofy movie that should be a lot more fun than it is, but its script by Jules Furthman boasts some nifty flourishes, one of which finds the sharp-shooting Holliday trying to goad...

But what was a surprise for the star was the exit her Wynonna Earp character got when the series ended its four-year run on Syfy in April 2021. Just as Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) was leaving town, Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), just after marrying Nicole (Katherine Barrell), convinced her sister Wynonna to go after him. And Wynonna did just that, stopping him at the town line (and shooting out the tire on his car) before the two rode off into the sunset on her motorcycle (and presumably reunited with their daughter). “I don’t think I would’ve ever pictured a happy ending,” Scrofano admits to TV Insider while promoting her Hallmark movie. “But I think we were in a place in the...

Lamonica Garrett stars on 1883 as Thomas, a Buffalo Soldier who, with his partner, Shea (Sam Elliott), has taken on the daunting task of accompanying European travelers north from Texas to Oregon.
Despite a rich history as cowboys, there have been relatively few Black portrayals on TV, and Garrett is honored for the opportunity to play such a significant role, and he's infusing Thomas with a lot of heart.
We had the chance to catch up with him for a nice chat, and you can read all about it below.
What has surprised you the most about 1883's reception?
I think that it's expanding on all sides. Everything right now is made to be political, and it's either you're too this, or you're too that, or there's not enough of this, there's not enough of that.
And I look in the comment sections on social media to see the temperature of the room,...

I think that it's expanding on all sides. Everything right now is made to be political, and it's either you're too this, or you're too that, or there's not enough of this, there's not enough of that.
And I look in the comment sections on social media to see the temperature of the room,...

Well, loyal readers, it’s that time again. December 31st, and you know what that means… it’s Val Kilmer’s birthday!
We here at Trailers From Hell would like to commemorate the moment with a look back at perhaps Kilmer’s signature role, the hard-partying sharpshooter Doc Holliday in the classic modern Western Tombstone (1993).
The story of Doc, the Earp brothers and their battle with a vicious gang of outlaws known as the “Cowboys” for the soul of Tombstone, Arizona, including the historic gunfight at the O.K. Corral, has been depicted on screen many times, many ways. But never with the verve and vigor of this picture, a riveting actioner boasting a cast of All-Stars. They even got Robert Mitchum to narrate!
After a spooky opening that introduces us to the ruthless Cowboys in all their evil ways as they disrupt a wedding in Mexico, we kick off...

Over the years, Westerns have provided moviegoers with some of the big screen’s most indelible fashion statements, from the dusty poncho and wide-brimmed Stetson of Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name in the ’60s to the natty attire of Doc Holliday — known as much for his sartorial splendor as his sharp shooting — as portrayed in such films as My Darling Clementine (1946), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957) and Tombstone (1993).

Hunter S. Thompson is a confounding figure. Though he didn’t invent Gonzo journalism, he is the most identifiable face of it. His first-person narrative style of news gathering makes him partially accountable for the overriding trends of internet journalism, on both sides of the aisle and all the cleanup calls which go along with them. Thompson’s 1970 attempt to run for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, marked the beginning of baby boomer politicking. Writer-director Bobby Kennedy III’s Fear and Loathing in Aspen tells that story with wit, wisdom and weirdness.
Set just before Thomson, played by Jay Bulger, caught his stride with his 1971 novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, the film conjures the energy of strange, new beginnings. Much of it is shot on vintage grade, grainy film stock, and it looks like the actors were free...

Now playing on Amazon Prime, “Val” is a documentary that reveals an insider’s perspective of what it’s like to be a Hollywood actor. Like Oscar-winner “Amy,” archival footage is the secret sauce — in this case, shot by subject Val Kilmer himself and saved over the decades in a cavernous vault. Kilmer brought in editor Leo Scott a decade ago to digitize that footage. Several years later, Scott and another editor-director, Ting Poo, pitched Kilmer on turning his trove of material into a first-person documentary narrative about his so-called Hollywood life.
With any non-fiction film like this, getting access and keeping it is key to success. And yet the question when it comes to this sort of celebrity profile is always: How honest and authentic is the story? What has been left out? And, in the case of a film like “Val,” if the filmmakers work for the subject,...

When Val Kilmer was in second grade, his father took him and his two brothers to the set of the hit 1960s TV show Batman, starring Adam West in the titular role. He even got to sit in the Batmobile.

For over 40 years Val Kilmer, one of Hollywood’s most mercurial and/or misunderstood actors has been documenting his own life and craft through film and video. He has amassed thousands of hours of footage, from 16mm home movies made with his brothers, to time spent in iconic roles for blockbuster movies like Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone, and Batman Forever. This raw, wildly original and unflinching documentary reveals a life lived to extremes and a heart-filled, sometimes hilarious look at what it means to be an artist and a complex man.
Amazon Studios will release Val in theaters July 23rd, 2021 and on Prime Video August 6th, 2021.
Directed by Leo Scott & Ting Poo, watch the brand new trailer.

Amazon Studios has acquired from A24 the rights to “Val,” a feature documentary about “Top Gun” and “Batman Forever” star Val Kilmer.
“Val” is the first in the slate of documentary features and docuseries from A24. The doc is compiled from thousands of hours of footage of Kilmer, including a large amount of home movie footage shot on 16mm by Kilmer and his brothers.
Leo Scott and Ting Poo direct the feature that aims to explore why Kilmer is one of the most mercurial and misunderstood actors of the last few decades. The film is described as a “raw, wildly original and unflinching” documentary film about how Kilmer lived to extremes, and the sometimes hilarious and heartwarming side of his complexities as an artist and a man.
Amazon will release “Val” later this year in the U.S. and Latin America. A24 controls all remaining worldwide rights.

Spoiler Alert: This post includes details about the series finale of Syfy’s Wynonna Earp.
It all came full circle for the Earp sisters in the series finale of Syfy’s Wynonna Earp. The supernatural series from creator, executive producer and writer Emily Andras, went out with a bang as Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano), Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and the rest of the gang gathered for one last family gathering at the homestead.
The final episode “Old Souls,” written by Andras, finally brought Waverly and Nicole Haught’s (Katherine Barrell) long-awaited wedding to center stage. As the soon-to-be newlyweds (a.k.a. WayHaught) prepared the Earp homestead for an intimate ceremony, Wynonna tries on her sister’s wedding dress for cheap thrills. The fun comes to an end when she realizes the wedding gown is impossible to remove, even when a non-Vampire Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) attempts to cut it off her body.

This Wynonna Earp article contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 11: “Better Dig Two.”
“Better Dig Two,” the penultimate episode of Wynonna Earp Season 4, gave viewers a lot to unpack. Waverly was a Dark Angel, and then she wasn’t. Doc was the Clanton heir, and then he wasn’t. Everything was fucked, and then it wasn’t. This show does such a good job raising the stakes, but it doesn’t always nail its pacing. I would have liked to see the story beats hit in these last two episodes stretched out a bit longer, and really explored. Is the Dark Angel part of Waverly or are they two separate entities? Is there any part of Waverly who revels in her angel power? After so many years of pain, does Doc really want to die, and what does it mean that Wynonna wouldn’t let him? There’s so much rich,...

Frank Perry’s version of the shootout at the O.K. Corral shapes up as a fine western and an even better drama — the revisionist angle is supported by an excellent script and thoughtful, challenging characterizations. Tombstone’s frontier folk are dirty, vulgar and corrupt, but Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway generate a rough-hewn romantic harmony. Harris Yulin’s Wyatt Earp is a revelation as well — if this were modern times Earp would get a lock on city hall politics and go into the land development racket. The beautifully filmed movie looks terrific on disc. Alex Cox delivers a solid audio commentary as well.

Paul Greengrass’ western drama “New of the World” starring Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel is gaining traction during this pandemic awards season despite the fact that sagebrush sagas often get short shrift at the Oscars. Only three traditional Westerns — 1931’s “Cimarron,” 1990’s “Dances with Wolves” and 1992’s “Unforgiven” — and one contemporary Western (2007’s “No Country for Old Men”) have won the Best Picture Oscar.
Among the oaters to be nominated for the top prize at the Academy Awards: John Ford’s 1939 “Stagecoach,” William A. Wellman’s 1943 “The Ox-Bow Incident,” Fred Zinnemann’s 1952’s “High Noon” (Gary Cooper won the Oscar for Best Actor), George Stevens’ 1953 “Shane”; 1960’s “The Alamo;” 1962’s “How the West Was Won”; and George Roy Hill’s 1969’s “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

Having recently wrapped Wynonna Earp Season 4, Melanie Scrofano is already set to reunite with leading man Tim Rozon via a “dual role” of sorts on his new Syfy drama, The Surrealtor.
The Surrealtor follows realtor Luke Roman (Earp‘s Rozon aka Doc Holliday) and an elite team of specialists that handle the cases no one else can: haunted and possessed houses that literally scare would-be buyers away. This Wynonna Earp review contains spoilers.
Wynonna Earp Season 4, Episode 6
You can love a narrative choice that a show makes without loving what it means for a specific character. If I knew Wynonna Earp in real life, I, like Doc Holliday, would be seriously afraid for her following her choice to shoot Sheriff Holt in the back, after he agreed to try to work towards ending the long-running feud between the Earps and the Clantons. But, as a fan and reviewer of this show, I love this choice that the Wynonna Earp writing team made. It implies a kind of ambition in this series’ Season 4 storytelling that is all-too-rare in genre TV, and I hope this show finds the narrative time to devote to it. Let’s talk about this bittersweet, amazing, accidental midseason finale…

While the concept of new scripted shows may already feel like a bygone idea in this era of pandemic-frozen productions, Syfy is actually moving forward with one such offering in The Surrealtor. Moreover, the main cast of the series has been officially announced, with a headliner familiar to viewers of the channel in Wynonna Earp’s Tim Rozon.
The Surrealtor, which landed a 10-episode series order back in February—alongside its touted Day of the Dead series—signals momentum with the announcement of its main cast players. The series puts a fixer-upper spin on the Ghostbusters paranormal exterminator dynamic, showcasing the exploits of realtor Nick Roman (Rozon), who leads an elite team who specialize in dealing with property-polluting poltergeists, fixing the things that go bump in the night so that deals can be closed, all while struggling with personal demons of their own.
