Stories about moral conundrums and the slippery side of justice and integrity are universally attractive and tent to travel well from one side to the other of the world. It's what happened to Herman Koch's novel “The Dinner”, an international bestseller translated in many languages and adapted into four films, Dutch, Italian, American and finally a Korean version directed by Hur Jin-ho with a different title, “A Normal Family”.
A Normal Family is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
The film's tone of voice is immediately established when we witness a horrific road rage between two cars, ending in one of the drivers being killed and his 6-yer-old daughter left critically injured. The culprit, a rich and arrogant kid with a powerful father, will likely get away with it, as his case is given to the capable hands of rampant and expensive attorney Jae-wan (Suo Kyung-gu). Coincidentally, the...

Four years ago, before Covid turned everything upside down, a new Asian masterpiece world premiered virtually unnoticed at the Toronto Film Festival. That film was “A Sun,” a multifaceted Taiwanese family saga from director Chung Mong-Hong that seemed to shift and evolve as it unfolded, challenging what audiences thought they knew about the characters. Tucked away in TIFF’s overcrowded (and under-promoted) Contemporary World Cinema section, the film easily slid under the radar.
Toronto programmers weren’t about to make the same mistake with “A Normal Family,” a film of similar force from South Korea, giving it a coveted Gala spot. Director Hur Jin-ho’s complex, complacency-shattering moral study boasts a heightened yet easily relatable premise, and strong potential to play well around the globe. Like “A Sun,” the movie comes roaring out of the gate with a shocker of an opening scene: An aggro jerk in a blood-red Maserati...

Back in 2010, screenwriter director Lee Jeong-beom's “The Man from Nowhere” which starred Won Bin, was the highest grossing film in South Korea. Best known for its amazing and thrilling action sequences, the film had fans longing for more from Lee. Therefore it is not really a surprise that he would follow it up with yet another action thriller that featured even more spectacular action but with a similar theme.

Writing about “Friend” is quite intimidating. The movie has been discussed and written about a lot. What could I possibly bring to the table? What would be interesting for you, dear Reader? I’ll try to give a non-lengthy overview of why the 2001 movie is interesting to watch and add my two cents.
“Friend” follows the life of four friends growing up in the 1970s in the city of Busan, and becoming adults. They are from different backgrounds and have different trajectories. Joon-seok (Yu Oh-seong) is the son of a local mafia’s godfather, not overly excited about it, and very loyal to his friends. He is the glue that holds the group together. Dong-su (Jang Dong-gun) comes from an undertaker family and wholeheartedly rejects it. Jung-ho (Jung Woon-taek) is the comic relief of the band. Sang-taek (Seo Tae-hwa) comes from a middle-class family, is shy and hard-working in school.

In 2002, South-Korean director Kim Ki-duk only made one film, “The Coast Guard”, which, even though it scenery had changed in comparison to his last movie “Bad Guy” is in many ways a continuation of its themes. The concept of the outsider, the borders within our world and the emotional trauma have always been at the heart of Kim’s cinema, but with “The Coast Guard” he went one step further, talking about the actual borders of his home country. Whereas other characters become outsiders through their deeds, the soldier in “The Coast Guard” does not choose his orders and because he obeys them turns into an outsider in the process. It is an interesting idea which is at the heart of the Korean’s eight film, albeit with a few flaws in terms of execution and storytelling.

A Merry Zombie Xmas
December 24, 2020 – January 7, 2021
In a world where the 3 Bs are edging towards massive mainstream success, and an age when all things “K” are synonymous with “crazy, sexy, cool”, another phenomenon has been going viral and global: the zombie movie “made in Korea”.
Filmmakers from the peninsula have injected new life in the undead genre, bringing both a bit of a Midas and Lazarus touch to a mythology that has been exploited almost to death. Original storylines spanning wildly diverse settings, from the Joseon era to our troubled times and even dark Mad Max-style dystopian futures, in-depth character development, and a clear-eyed look at today’s societal fears have raised the biters back from the realm of putrid pop fiction.
As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to celebrate the reinvigorated genre, powered by the...

South Korean filmmaker Jeong-beom Lee is badass. I know I say that a lot about South Korean directors, but Lee is particularly awesome. “The Man from Nowhere” is a tidy thriller worthy of your attention. In fact, anyone who subscribes to Netflix streaming should take a moment to check it out. It will prove once again how Hollywood has seriously dropped the ball in the thriller department. Need proof? Watch Robert Luketic’s “Paranoia” and get back to me. Jeong-beom Lee is ready to bring his magic touch back to theaters across South Korea with the upcoming flick “Crying Man,” a film about a professional assassin and the person he’s tasked with killing. I’m sure there’s more going on than that, but this logline is essentially all we have to work with at the moment. “Crying Man,” which stars Dong-gun Jang, Min-hee Kim, and Han-na Kang, opens in South Korea this June.

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...

World War II, fought on multiple continents with multiple armies, has an untold number of unique stories. One story revolves around an Asian soldier captured by the Americans during the Normandy invasion. In My Way (Mai wei), filmmaker Je-kyu Kang shows us how this man found himself taken from Korea to ultimately become a conscripted soldier in the German Wehrmacht.
The movie begins with color commentary of the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. The announcer is highlighting the movement of a Korean runner named Jun-shik Kim (Dong-gun Jang). Jun-shik Kim is steadily moving up the field of runners.
Quickly the story flashes back to Japanese-occupied Korea. A Japanese doctor and his family have moved to Korea to serve under the doctor’s father, a colonel in the Japanese Imperial Army. This family has a young son, Tatsuo Hasagawa, who spies another young boy running alongside their car. This boy is Jun-shik Kim,...

On a hillside overlooking the beaches of Normandy, American soldiers surround a Korean and a Japanese man wearing Nazi uniforms. This is the second-most intriguing image of Mai-wei, the WWII epic from writer/director Je-gyu Kang. What’s even more fascinating is that the image is drawn directly from real life. How they got there (and into Hitler’s army no less) is a story told while trudging through the freezing mountains of Russia and the hot open plains of Korea. It’s an enormous movie, told through a decade as two competitive marathon runners – Jun-shik Kim (Dong-gun Jang) and Tatsuo Hasegawa (Jo Odagiri) – begin as alienated enemies and become friends through the brittle evolution of battle. Certainly its most striking achievements are the extended, highly-choreographed war scenes that steal the breath right out of your lungs. The visual style is an angrier version of Saving Private Ryan, but instead of beginning with Normandy, Mai-wei...

The Warrior’s Way
Directed by: Sngmoo Lee
Cast: Dong-gun Jang, Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush
Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: June 28, 2011
Plot: A warrior-assassin (Jang) is forced to hide in a small town in the American Badlands after refusing a mission.
Who’S It For? Viewers capable of suspending disbelief. Suspending disbelief in the film’s manifest content, and also in the fact that such cheesy CGI FX actually exist. In all seriousness, people who get a kick out of action for action’s sake, will likely enjoy this film, and fans of Jang, Bosworth and Rush will likely be pleased with each actor’s respective performance.
Movie:
The Warrior’s Way is definitely a B-film. However, it maintains just enough self-awareness of it’s inherent silliness throughout, to make for a fairly enjoyable watch. My opinion before seeing the film, based solely on its trailer,...

The Coast Guard
Directed by Ki-duk Kim
South Korea, 2002
With Ki-duk Kim releasing a new film at this year’s Cannes, his older material warrants a small retrospective. Ki-duk’s best films – The Isle, Bad Guy, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring, 3-Iron – are tender and violent portraits of mostly mute protagonists, often marked by sudden and unexpected acts of brutality. The Coast Guard takes these similar tropes to form Ki-duk’s most scathing commentary on the South Korean military state.
Kang Sang-byeong (Dong-gun Jang) is the most gung-ho member of the Korean Coast Guard. He obsesses over one day finding and killing a spy just beyond the borders he patrols. He paints his face in camouflage for routine exercises, incessantly scans the shoreline with manic eyes, and lives the military code as bible. When a drunken couple crosses the forbidden fencing Kang finds his chance and doesn’t miss.

The Warrior’s Way opens with a ridiculous voiceover that informs us that the setting for the film is “A long, long time ago. In a land far away” and that it is “…the story of a sad flute, a laughin’ baby and a weepin’ sword”. If you don’t find some unintentional humour in that opening then the remaining 99 minutes are going to be unrelentingly dull slog. Even if you do it will still be an unrelentingly dull slog but one admittedly punctuated by the occasional moment of unintentional humour.
Following the opening voiceover we are introduced to the lead character Yang (Dong-gun Jang), although referring to him as a character may be overstating things a little as he is something of a charisma vacuum throughout. Yang is facing up against “The Greatest Swordsman in the History of Mankind”. We know that because there is some handy text on...

"Ninjas. Damn." The line that got Mark sold on The Warrior's Way. So what's the movie itself like? Here's his review...
In the abundance of trailers jostling for position each time you visit the multiplex, somewhere between car adverts and that bloody Orange ad for Gulliver's Travels that I'm starting to worry will just go on forever, someone occasionally makes you sit up and pay attention.
And if you've seen the trailer for The Warrior's Way, it's just one line of dialogue from alcoholic gunslinger Geoffrey Rush. "Ninjas. Damn."
Cowboys are cool. Ninjas more so. It's this kind of combination of Western elements with cool stuff that's expected to serve Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens well next summer, but in the meantime, we have another attempt to mash up Hong Kong martial arts cinema with Western B-movie in just the kind of post-colonial misstep that Hollywood seems to make over and over again these days.

New 'Warrior's Way' movie delivered tons of action & drama. Relativity Media released their new action, drama flick "The Warrior's Way" into theaters this weekend. I just saw it,and thought it was really entertaining. It delivered some very good actions scenes, mostly towards the end, along with some high intense drama. The movie stars: Dong-gun Jang, Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush, Danny Huston, and Tony Cox. "The Warrior's Way" movie revolved around character Yang (Dong-gun Jang) who is a highly trained warrior assassin that is forced to hide out in a small circus town in an effort to escape his evil past. Unfortunately, he eventually finds out that this new life he's found is not that much different from his old one.

The spaghetti Western rides again - in a chop suey variation.
The story begins in Korea, where cold-blooded assassin Yang (Dong-gun Jang) is heralded as "The Greatest Swordsman in the History of Mankind." But he's a softie at heart, as evidenced by his reluctance to butcher a burbling baby girl even after he's slaughtered her parents, part of a rival clan. Scooping her up in his arms, he flees from the Far East to the Old West, winding up in Lode, a decrepit desert outpost once known as "The Paris of the West."...

The Warrior’s Way
Directed by: Sngmoo Lee
Cast: Dong-gun Jang, Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush, Danny Huston
Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: December 3, 2010
Plot: A small town of outcasts in the wild west rely on the skills of vagabond warrior (Jang) to protect them from a menace called Colonel (Huston), and then later ninjas.
Who’S It For? Does the concept of “Cowboys vs. Ninjas” sound worth your ten dollars? If you hesitated to answer that question, you probably shouldn’t bother. If you screamed “Yes!” at your computer, then this one’s for you.
Overall
It’s difficult to tell whether director Sngmoo Lee had free reign with this project, one without the control of an anxious, eager-to-please studio, or if The Warrior’s Way is just that – a producer’s film. This movie could be one writer/director desperately trying to legitimize the fantastical concept of Cowboys vs.

The Warrior's Way (written and directed by Sngmoo Lee) is a mixture of a Chinese fantasy, Seven Samurai, a western, and a cartoon. We open with Yang (played by Dong-gun Jang) a ninja assassin who has managed to slay nearly everyone of his rival clan expect a young baby girl, later named April, who has to be the cutest kid (beside my own of course). Something happens, doesn’t it always, and Yang not only spare’s baby April, but travels from his own clan to protect her. After killing what would probably was the ten thousandth assassin he decides to travel to a western-cowboy town where another member of his clan has escaped and runs his own laundry business. He arrives to a small troubled town of circus performers to find his friend is dead and the town is in need of another human washing machine.

Like many people, I watched the trailer for The Warrior’s Way with general disinterest; nothing about it looked that intriguing or entertaining, and the line “ninjas…Damn!” made it seem like it was going to be some sort of tongue-in-cheek cheesy action flick. How wrong I was. Not only is it entertaining, but it’s just so damn different that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. Okay, maybe love is too strong a word, but it was good. Really good. I know, I’m shocked too!
Dong-gun Jang stars as Yang, an assassin with a ninja clan known as the Sad Flutes (not in a slide whistle kind of way, more of a “the sound the vocal box makes after the throat is slit” way) who is hell-bent on destroying a rival clan. Thanks to Yang, their best asset, they’ve nearly completed their goal...

The Warrior's Way is a clusterfuck of Sergio Leone and Frank Miller, of Karate Kid and The Pacifier, of martial arts and Western, of square dancing and opera, of fairy tale and blood-soaked tale of revenge, of 300 and Lonesome Dove, of Geek Love and a video game. It shouldn't work, and for many, it may not. But for others, it works in the same way that Girl Talk can remix certain pieces of music that some may not normally like to create something derivatively fresh, like combining the pop-sensibilities of Abba with the lyrics of Arlo Guthrie. There's a certain amount of bastardization going on, but if you can allow yourself to look past the wholesale slaughter of sacred cows, there's an entertaining flick buried beneath all the genre blood.

We've got a pretty odd assortment of movies kicking off December this year; in fact, with so much genre stuff and so little in the way of awards contenders you'd almost think it was January already. Sngmoo Lee's The Warrior's Way is the only new wide release, a blend of both Eastern and Western sensibilities with a cast that includes Koren superstar Dong-gun Jang plus Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush and Danny Huston. Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan also makes its theatrical debut this weekend, unfortunately it is playing on less than 20 screens. Also in limited release we have I Love You, Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, and the Finnish holiday fantasy/horror film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. What will you be watching this weekend? The Warrior's Way [1] Black Swan [2] (limited) Dead Awake [3] (limited) Rare Exports...

"The Warrior's Way," a new martial arts Western starring Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush and Korean pop star Dong-gun Jang, has been a labor of love for its director Sngmoo Lee. A Korean citizen, he attended New York University for cinema studies and filmmaking and upon returning to Korea, began developing a film about an Asian assassin who refuses his master's orders to kill a baby and goes into hiding as a laundry man with a traveling circus.

“Ninjas Damn!” is the tag line for this exclusive clip for The Warrior’S Way, brought to us by Rogue. Opening wide this Friday, Sngmoo Lee‘s Warrior’S Way stars Dong-gun Jang as a ninja assassin who becomes the hunted after refusing to carry out an assassination. He hides out in a small Western town, getting the aid of some locals, played by Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush.
