When "The Simpsons" debuted on December 17, 1989, it was an instant sensation. Matt Groening's bizarre, weirdly proportioned yellow people felt like a dark antidote to the corny TV Americana that had persisted through Reagan's America, and the show's popularity proved that audiences were ready for a change. Plus, it was incredibly novel to have an animated sitcom in primetime, leading many curious souls to tune in ... and instantly become hooked. Many years later, celebrities would be fighting tooth-and-nail to gain a coveted guest spot on "The Simpsons," either playing themselves or playing a character.
A fun piece of trivia: the first celebrity to guest-star in an episode of "The Simpsons" was Albert Brooks (no relation to show producer James L.). Albert Brooks played a character named Cowboy Bob in the 1990 episode "The Call of the Simpsons." Cowboy Bob was very eager to sell an Rv to the status-seeking Simpson family.

On August 20, 2017, Jerry Lewis took a pratfall off this mortal coil, presumably knocking an unwitting dowager on her keister and sending a surprised cop into an open manhole on his way out. The durable enfant terrible was all of 91 years when he finally left the building though he had been making spirited public appearances as recently as January of this year.
For the inquisitive Jerry fan, Shawn Levy’s 1997 King of Comedy: The Life and Art of Jerry Lewis, remains the first and last stop for the straight scoop on America’s premiere nudnik. Levy, who endured the full fury of the comedian’s legendary wrath to get his story, is as admiring of his subject’s accomplishments as he was repelled by his whiplash mood swings. The hard knock apprenticeship in the Catskills, the Freudian-fueled soap opera of his partnership with Dean Martin, the boastful sex-capades, they’re all there and then some.

Man Allegedly Castrated Transgender Woman in Unsanctioned Surgery She Underwent Out of ‘Desperation’
A Colorado man who is not a medical professional possibly faces a felony assault charge after allegedly castrating a transgender woman, People confirms.
In an online letter she posted, the woman allegedly characterized the operation as a “back-alley surgery” she willingly underwent out of “desperation.”
Authorities were called after “a large amount of blood poured out of the incision” as the woman’s wife was changing the dressing, police said.
James L. Pennington, 57, of Westminster, was arrested May 17 for the alleged 90-minute operation at the woman’s apartment, which he performed using a scalpel, lidocaine and other tools from an Army surgical medical kit,...

On January 3rd, 1970, the frozen, decomposing body of Sister Catherine Cesnik was found lying in a field near a garbage dump in the Baltimore County suburb of Landsdowne, Maryland. The 26-year-old had disappeared the previous November, when she went out one evening to buy her sister an engagement present and never came home. Her car was found late that night, parked a few blocks away from her home and at an odd angle, leading investigators to suspect that her killer was someone she knew and who knew where she lived.

Donald Trump tore into the “so-called judge” who ruled against controversial travel ban on Twitter Saturday morning… and Twitter responded to his name-calling in kind. In a series of tweets, the president criticized the U.S. District Judge James L. Robart for his decision on Friday to temporarily suspend enforcement of the executive order restricting travel to the U.S. from several Muslim nations. “The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!” Trump tweeted. The concept of this project was to create a comedy mixtape that was full of sketches. Any example that I've seen of a comedy Mixtape has essentially been someone's stand-up album, perhaps with a sketch or two. As a huge fan of Adam Sandler older albums, I recall listening to those sketches repeatedly and laughing hysterically each time. Mixtapes have millions of people downloading them on a daily basis.
Artists featured on the mixtape are: Amber Nelson (TruTv), Nick Turner (Comedy Central), Anthony DeVito (Comedy Central), Peggy O' Leary (Just For Laughs), Sam Evans (Just For Laughs), Nathan Macintosh (Gotham Comedy Live), James L. Mattern (WWE Network), Mike Brown (MTV), Sharron Paul (CollegeHumor), Ross Parsons (MTV), Evan Williams, Sara Armour (Last Comic Standing), Lindsay Boling, Ayanna Dookie (Fox's Laughs), Christi Chiello (Comedy Central), Petey DeAbreau, Tim Warner, Jose Sanchez and Ryan Schutt.

A nearly 600-page biography of a French filmmaker would not make every summer reading list, but any discerning cinephile will consider Éric Rohmer: A Biography. It’s one of several stunning recent releases, along with a weighty oral history of Star Trek, an intimate remembrance of Stanley Kubrick, and a fascinating breakdown of the great Suspiria. Now that’s an eclectic roster of beach reads.

'Broadcast News' with Albert Brooks and Holly Hunter: Glib TV news watch. '31 Days of Oscar': 'Broadcast News' slick but superficial critics pleaser (See previous post: “Phony 'A Beautiful Mind,' Unfairly Neglected 'Swing Shift': '31 Days of Oscar'.”) Heralded for its wit and incisiveness, James L. Brooks' multiple Oscar-nominated Broadcast News is everything the largely forgotten Swing Shift isn't: belabored, artificial, superficial. That's very disappointing considering Brooks' highly addictive Mary Tyler Moore television series (and its enjoyable spin-offs, Phyllis and Rhoda), but totally expected considering that three of screenwriter-director Brooks' five other feature films were Terms of Endearment, As Good as It Gets, and Spanglish. (I've yet to check out I'll Do Anything and the box office cataclysm How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Jack Nicholson.) Having said that, Albert Brooks (no relation to James L.; or to Mel Brooks...

It's been a tough year for the Giudices. On Monday's "Watch What Happens Live," host Andy Cohen gave viewers a new sneak peek of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey: Teresa Checks In" special. In the clip, we see Teresa Giudice's eldest daughter Gia's emotional reaction when she calls the family from prison. Check out the video above to see the 14-year-old's teary-eyed conversation. "Is your makeup on?" Teresa asks Gia, as the teen tries to fight back her tears. "My mom doesn't want me or anyone to get emotional, so I try my best just to keep it all together," Gia says later in the clip, during a one-on-one interview. The 43-year-old first started serving her time in a Connecticut detention center last January -- but, if all goes to plan, the mother-of-four will hopefully be home for the holidays. "Several months back we were able to secure...

Summer may be over, but one Oklahoma teacher is keeping the fun alive thanks to an ingenious idea for her classroom: a "Harry Potter" theme.
Stephanie Stephens, who teaches elective math and reading classes for grades six through eight at James L. Capps Middle School in Oklahoma City, told ABC News that she was inspired to decorate with "Potter" in mind both in honor of her own love for the series, and to inspire a similar passion in her students.
"One of the toughest things as a reading teacher is instilling a love of reading in students that do not like reading," Stephens told ABC. "This year, I chose to go with a Harry Potter theme because if I am excited and enthusiastic, students tend to follow suit. My goal is to help students find at least one book or genre that they can find exciting and be as enthusiastic...

Once upon a time, "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo del Toro was slated to direct a two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," under the supervision of original "Lord of the Rings" helmer Peter Jackson. That, of course, never happened and after spending 18 months in New Zealand working on the script and overseeing countless designs, del Toro left the project altogether. (Jackson would come back to the franchise as a director and turn it into another trilogy).
Earlier this month, del Toro orchestrated a "couch gag" for "The Simpsons'" annual Halloween episode that was, simply put, jaw dropping. It was del Toro's personal history through horror and it was an undeniable hoot. Now, in one of those cosmic coincidences, a "Hobbit"-specific "Simpsons" couch gag has followed del Toro's gag. It goes without saying that he had nothing to do with it.

Hollywood loves a good inspirational drama……especially ones with a sporting theme. Just recently films like Oscar winners The Blind Side and The Fighter, or Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, have used sport as a uniting theme for defying the odds. Directed by and starring Denzel Washington, The Great Debaters follows this tradition but with a completely different kind of sport – one with a far loftier background than American Football or Boxing. It’s the academic sport of debating, with Washington’s real life coach Melvin B.Tolson leading a team of college students to become the greatest university debate team in the country.
It’s no simple task however, as the team is made up of African-American students in 1930’s depression struck America – deep in the midst of racial segregation. The passion and drive of Tolson and his debate team is not simply to...

Beautiful Darling, the haunting new documentary about the Andy Warhol superstar and pioneering drag-queen transsexual Candy Darling, includes a detail that may not seem to be that big a deal, but that began to astonish me the more I thought about it. It’s that Candy, by the early 1970s, after she’d already become a famous fixture on the downtown scene, was still impoverished, crashing on people’s couches, eating a can of beans for dinner, and — the movie strongly suggests — turning tricks to survive. Basically, she was living the desperate, scraping-through-each-day existence of just about any anonymous New York drag queen.

When it comes to costume dramas, every single detail must be authentic. Even when no costumes are involved. Ask Evan Rachel Wood.
The actress stars in HBO's upcoming miniseries, "Mildred Pierce," the network's adaptation of James L. Cain's 1941 novel. Wood plays Veda, co-star Kate Winslet's daughter, and she took inspiration from her on-screen mom -- and tragic on-screen rival -- for a very important scene. A nude scene.
"I was a lot more nervous than I thought I was going to be," Wood told xfinityTV.com. While Wood was debating whether she'd go through with it, Winslet spoke up.
"I looked at Kate and she was like, 'You've got to do it. Trust me, it's so brave. Put a merkin on and you'll be fine.'"
A merkin, otherwise known as a pubic wig, was required because the 26-year old needed to appear naked as those in the 1930's most often did.

"I looked at Kate and she was like, 'You've got to do it. Trust me, it's so brave. Put a merkin on and you'll be fine.'"
A merkin, otherwise known as a pubic wig, was required because the 26-year old needed to appear naked as those in the 1930's most often did.

Indie filmmaker Todd Haynes (Far from Heaven) talked to television critics about his first foray into television on HBO's Mildred Pierce Friday at the press tour in Pasadena. Toh contributor Amy Dawes reports: The revisionist spirit that shaped classic 1970s American films like Chinatown and The Godfather was a guiding source of inspiration for Todd Haynes in adapting James L. Cain’s 1941 novel Mildred Pierce. Haynes’ five-hour miniseries – his first foray into television – takes a naturalistic approach to shooting the Depression-era drama, which stars Kate Winslet and premieres March 27 on HBO. Produced by Christine Vachon and Killer Films, it’s a decided departure from the noir approach of Michael Curtiz’ 1945 film version. “In the ‘70s, a lot of genre movies were getting ...

First let’s gets the obvious out of the way. The Tourist and that Narnia film are flops plain and simple. Nobody wanted to see them and though, of course, Depp and Jolie will go on the make other films, this pretty much spells the end for anymore Narnia movies. Meet The Fockers was No. 1 expected. Tron Legacy despite dropping some 54% from last week, no doubt due to unenthusiastic word-of-mouth, and came in at No.3. But it’ s going to take a long, slow haul before Disney begins to recoup the film’s reported $175 million cost.
Update: The Jack Black starrer Gulliver Travels died horribly but then again didn’t just everything about that film screamed “Stay Away” like James L. Brook’s How Do You Know? which completely dropped out of the top ten. But the big and most welcome surprise was the strong box office showing for True Grit...

Disney’s Tron: Legacy finished first, as expected, but dipped below expectations with a $44 million start on an otherwise slow weekend at the box office.
28 years after the neon-lit original, the sequel captured fanboy interest with its impressive digital imagery, but the story lacks broad appeal and the reviews were a mixed bag. The studio had hoped for $50 million or better for the expensive holiday tentpole after sinking a reported $170 million into its production budget and another $120 million on a 2-year marketing blitz that dazzled Comic-Con attendees (twice).
But it seems the Mouse House somehow hadn’t considered Tron would return as a niche property that only appeals to those cultish few fans of the first and a demographic that wasn’t even alive when the original was in theaters. Instead, Tron 2 opened below Watchmen’s numbers, which was considered a disappointment at the time in geek circles.

Disney spent somewhere in the region of $150 million in marketing Tron Legacy and well over another $150 million in actually making the damn thing… so an opening weekend of $43.5 million is weak, and, well it ain’t gonna cut it.
We’ve been expecting this for a few weeks now. We first mentioned that Tron Legacy was tracking badly on 1st Dec, and although it’s made slightly more than the $35 million estimated then, it’s still way short of where it needed to be. Unless there’s immense staying power in this thing over the festive period, then some heads are going to have to roll. They must.
Just how you have the arrogance (or plain stupidity) to greenlight a 28 years on sequel to an obscure, experimental film and spend $300 million on making it happen when the original was remembered for just two things,
1) Dodgy, outdated almost upon release special...

It's rare to see a film that doesn't require any special effects have a budget of over $100 million. That's why when I heard James L. Brook's latest film How Do You Know spent $120 million to produce, my jaw dropped.
Shi# Paul, I think I took all your money!
So let's dissect the figure. About $40 million went towards the actors in the film. Reese Witherspoon got $15 million, Jack Nicholson cashed in $12 million, Owen Wilson got $10 million and Paul Rudd got screwed with $3 million despite having a bigger role in the film than Wilson and Nicholson.

Criterion has burned through all of its 2010 release announcements. What will the new year bring? If January is an accurate indicator, 2011 might be the year of the Blu-Ray upgrade.
Sam Fuller's Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss are getting the high-def treatment with cover art and illustrations from Daniel Clowes. Jean Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows and Bryan Haskin's classic science-fiction tale Robinson Crusoe on Mars are also receiving Blu-Ray upgrades.
Finally, there are two new entries. Criterion is making a rare nod to 80s Hollywood with a Blu-Ray and DVD release of James L. Brook's Broadcast News. A 4 DVD box set from Eclipse entitled Basil Dearden's London Underground will explore the work of (can you guess?) English director Basil Dearden.

James L. Brook's new movie "How Do You Know" pops out of nowhere with a brand new trailer. Witherspoon basically has to choose between Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. How hard of a decision is that, I'd choose Rudd in a heart beat. The new Brooks romantic comedy centers on the love triangle between professional softball player Lisa Jorgenson (Witherspoon), a corporate executive (Rudd), and a major-league pitcher (Wilson). "How Do You Know" is set to melt your heart in theaters this December 17th.Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Source: Yahoo! Movies...

At approximately 5 p.m. today, Barack and Michelle Obama will host a screening of The Pacific, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s new HBO miniseries documenting the American Marines involvement in the Pacific theater during World War II. Hanks and Spielberg will be on hand, as will national security adviser and retired four-star general James L. Jones, as well as members of the V.F.W. and Women in the Military Service for the American Memorial. As the president draws down troops in Iraq and ramps up the war in Afghanistan, he has a lot to learn from America’s past conflicts. This fall, when the White House was reevaluating its strategy on Afghanistan, Obama’s staff passed around Lessons in Disaster, Gordon Goldstein’s account of then national security adviser McGeorge Bundy’s poor decision-making in the early days of Vietnam. The Pacific is a miniseries, not a documentary or memoir,...
