Netflix has settled a defamation lawsuit brought by the head of a Cuban exile organization, who accused the streamer of falsely portraying him as a terrorist and drug trafficker in Olivier Assayas’ political spy thriller Wasp Network.
Lawyers for Brothers to the Rescue leader Jose Basulto and Netflix notified the court of a deal to resolve the suit, according to a notice of settlement filed on Wednesday. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. A jury trial was set to start next month.
Wasp Network, released in 2019 with a representation that it’s “based on a true story,” is adapted from the book The Last Soldiers of the Cold War by Fernando Morais. The suit accused Netflix of making concessions to Cuba, which allegedly interfered with the making of the movie to ensure a favorable retelling of history, to shoot in the country. It wasn’t until Billie Lourd was in middle school that she finally took a seat in front of the television, unprompted, to watch a little film called Star Wars.
While her mother, the late Carrie Fisher, had been trying for years to get her to check out George Lucas’s sci-fi classic as a way to earn cool points thanks to her starring role as Princess Leia, Lourd, now 30, would typically “roll my eyes and yell, ‘It’s too loud.'” But when boys her age confessed how much they fantasized about Fisher, she decided to press play.
“I went home to investigate who this person was they were talking about. I finally watched the movie I had forever considered too loud, and finally figured out what all the fuss was about with the lady in the TV,” Lourd relayed from the podium on Thursday during Fisher’s posthumous Walk of Fame ceremony.

Fans of Carrie Fisher are keeping her memory alive, and have even created a makeshift star for her on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The 60-year-old actress, who died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack onboard a plane, does not have an official star, but fans of the icon decorated a blank space, between those for Larry Semon and Paul Williams, with flowers, candles and the message: “Carrie Fisher May the Force Be With You Always Hope.”
Those who saw the temporary memorial spoke to the Los Angeles Times, saying they couldn’t believe Fisher didn’t already have one in her name.

Los Angeles — Charles Durning grew up in poverty, lost five of his nine siblings to disease, barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.
His hard life and wartime trauma provided the basis for a prolific 50-year career as a consummate Oscar-nominated character actor, playing everyone from a Nazi colonel to the pope to Dustin Hoffman's would-be suitor in "Tootsie."
Durning, who died Monday at age 89 in New York, got his start as an usher at a burlesque theater in Buffalo, N.Y. When one of the comedians showed up too drunk to go on, Durning took his place. He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as he heard the audience laughing.
He told The Associated Press in 2008 that he had no plans to stop working. "They're going to carry me out, if I go," he said.

Los Angeles — Engelbert Humperdink has one. Clint Eastwood does not. John, George and Ringo – yes. Paul McCartney? Not yet. And George Clooney would be in the club if only someone could convince him to show up for the ceremony.
When it comes to receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the sidewalk tourist attraction that encompasses 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of intersecting Vine Street, it's not so much who you know, but whether you're willing to play by the rules.
For starters, someone in the celebrity's camp must first fill out an application form that includes the star's signed promise that they will attend the ceremony.
No pledge? No ceremony. Which is why Eastwood, Julia Roberts and Clooney aren't among the 2,450 honorees lining Hollywood's sidewalks.

Should reality stars get stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? According to a report on 'Early' (weekdays, 7Am on CBS), it's not going to happen. That may make Pauly D unhappy, but the people interviewed for the segment around the Walk seemed fine with it. And Ana Martinez, the Walk of Fame's publicist, sounds pretty adamant about it.
Somebody asked the question on the Walk of Fame's Facebook page, and were told "Hell to the no." 'Early' reported that people noticed the response, including reality stars. "The criteria for getting a star is longevity in the field of entertainment, of five years or more, awards - Emmys, Oscars, Grammys," said Martinez. "Philanthropic work that they do."

Hollywood Walk of Fame's VP of media relations Ana Martinez spoke to CNN about the organizations decision to not honor reality TV stars like Kim Kardashian and Snooki. "It's just not on the radar for us right now," she explained. The criteria to receive a star on the Walk of Fame includes having awards and honors in entertainment, philanthropic work, and longevity in the field. But not all reality stars have been banned. "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest has a star commemorating his radio career, and so do Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons, but for their music and not their reality shows. But what about Judge Judy and Vanna White? They have stars on the Walk of Fame. The organization claims they are considered "successful TV industry personalities" and not "Reality TV stars." In the end, the goal is to simply "bring the tourists to Hollywood."...

For years, people have come from all over the world to visit the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles to follow in the footsteps of celebrities and snap photos of the plaques dedicated to some of the greatest artists of our time. (Then they hop over to Grauman’s Chinese Theater to discover how many of them have shockingly tiny or unreasonably large hands.) But might future generations step right over the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe and wonder where The Situation and Kim Kardashian are? In other words, youths are horrible, horrible people and we are doomed.

A representative from the Hollywood Walk of Fame recently made the organization's stance on reality stars very clear.
"Someone asked if we give reality show characters stars?" they wrote on Facebook. "Hell to the No!"
A chorus of "thank yous" quickly followed, but speaking with CNN, Walk of Fame vice president for media relations Ana Martinez seems a bit more diplomatic.
"It's just not on the radar for us right now," she says, citing the criteria for the honor includes longevity in their field of entertainment, awards and philanthropy.
There's also the not-so-small matter of a willingness to pay the $30,000 installation and maintenance fee that accompanies each star -- something celebrities like Madonna and Whitney Houston have historically passed on.
So will reality stars really never make it to the Walk? They kind of already have. TV "personalities" like Judge Judy and Vanna White have both earned their stars, so a Kardashian loophole seems inevitable.
