It is meaningful to me to be back here, compiling a list of ten for Dn, following a year off last year. Coming back I feel my list is different to what it may have been without the break, where my film watching, cinema-going and general cinephilia took new forms that are still revealing themselves. Some notes:
There is no inclusion of Enys Men or One Fine Morning, which for me are 2022 films and though released cinematically this year I wish to leave that year well and truly behind me. I’ve only included films where there is a trailer link so there’s no room for Nariman Massoumi’s poetic short doc Pouring Water on Troubled Oil, currently screening at festivals though criminally getting overlooked at many that should show it, John Akomfrah’s stunning installation Arcadia, at The Box in Plymouth until June 2024, or finally, Mark Jenkin’s...

It’s been almost six months since the series finale of Succession, and Jesse Armstrong has been enjoying the rest.
“There was some sadness about the show ending,” says the British creator and showrunner of HBO’s multiple Emmy-winning drama, which followed the misadventures of the deliriously dysfunctional Roy family, owners of media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar Royco. “[But] doing the show was such a rush of pleasure and anxieties and hard work, of pondering the next season and worrying that you’re going to screw it up [that] is is very, very nice to have time to read again. And to travel.”
Since Succession finished, Armstrong has been on a bit of a victory lap, attending international television festivals and book tours (Faber and Faber published a series of authorized Succession script books) while pondering what to do next.

Christopher Morris filmed a field in southwest England for one year for a documentary that wants us to stop and think about the environment
The title says it all: beginning at the winter solstice in 2020, academic and film-maker Christopher Morris filmed a barley field in west Cornwall for one year. A field. That’s it. For 86 minutes this thoughtful, meditative documentary reveals the comings and goings: sunsets, sunrises, the midnight frolics of bunnies, the odd crisp packet blowing in. It’s unlikely to be storming a multiplex near you – though the opening scene does feature the close-up of a corpse. The unfortunate creature in question however is a field mouse that appears – limbs present and correct – to have expired from natural causes. The film’s paciest action scene is a three-minute-plus sequence of slugs slithering across lichen on a standing stone.
This eight-foot stone is more than 4,000 years old. “Carved...

"This is a quiet, unnoticed one man vigil. A small, direct action of stillness." An early festival promo trailer has debuted for an indie documentary titled A Year in a Field, premiering at the Sheffield DocFest in the UK this month. The film is indeed about a field and what happens there. It's meant to be a compelling study of humanity's connection with the natural world surrounding us. Sheffield describes A Year in a Field as: BAFTA-winning documentarian Christopher Morris reflects upon human existence, its relationship to the environment and the urgent need for compassion and transformation. The trailer is rather slow and poetic, with a poignant voiceover. There's even some text that pops up saying this is "A Quiet Film by Christopher Morris." Sometimes we really do need cinema like this – slowing things down and allowing us to reflect on the passing of time, and how we need to reconnect with the world.

“Do you have any pets?” When the FBI called at Reality Winner’s Georgia home in June 2017, the agency didn’t exactly start out playing hardball; in fact it, took the better part of hour even to start getting down to brass tacks with the 25-year-old. We know this because the whole event was recorded on a hidden wire and transcribed as evidence for Winner’s subsequent trial. New York director Tina Satter first fashioned this transcript, with zero embellishment, into a critically acclaimed stage play called Is This a Room in 2019, and in Reality, which premiered in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama strand, she expands it into an astonishingly effective docu-drama hybrid.
Reality Winner’s misdemeanor didn’t quite put her in the league of Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning, and, in a way, Satter’s film leans into that. Many know the name, and perhaps also the...

Kochi, Dec 23 (Ians) Englands left-arm fast-bowling all-rounder Sam Curran on Friday became the most expensive signing in history of Indian Premier League (Ipl) with Punjab Kings shelling out a whopping Inr 18.50 crores at the Ipl 2023 mini player auction.

Mumbai, Oct 12 (Ians) Former South African pace bowler Dale Steyn has likened charismatic middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav’s emergence to Ab de Villiers, one of the most successful Proteas batter, adding that the Indian’s red-hot form will be crucial to the 2007 T20 World Cup champion’s success in the upcoming edition of the tournament in Australia.
Suryakumar has been in blazing form, with his success with the bat in the recently-concluded T20I series against Australia and South Africa pivotal to the hosts winning both the high-stakes fixtures.
“He’s (Suryakumar) the kind of player that likes to use the pace of the ball. He likes to get in behind the square. In places like Perth, Melbourne, all of these grounds, there is a little bit of extra pace on it. So, you can use the pace, you can hit on fine leg, behind and all along the carpet.

Fooling the Children of the Revolution: Morris Returns with Dark, Political Satire
Stakes are perhaps too high for writer-director Christopher Morris’s sophomore film following the success of his provocative terrorist comedy Four Lions, one of the best films of 2010, which is perhaps one of several reasons why it’s taken so long for a follow-up feature. Arriving nine years later is The Day Shall Come, an equally perverse portrait of our modern corrupt world.
Another reason for the lengthy delay (besides his contributions to “Veep”) might be expectation, both for how much further Morris could push absurdist boundaries under the guise of so-called good taste as well as who the intended audience should be, something which makes his latest a unique marketing challenge.…...

In Christopher Morris’ new satire, “The Day Shall Come,” the stories of many people in the United States are condensed into one bitterly funny but dark comedy about the shortcomings of our justice system.
On one side is a charismatic man with delusions of grandeur, Moses (newcomer Marchánt Davis). He oversees a peaceful sect based on a fairly convoluted belief system that references Black Islamist, Jewish and Christian traditions. Moses works with his wife, Venus on the farm, takes in former drug dealers off the streets, and preaches the gospel of nonviolence and communal living. However, his unorthodox prayers call out to the liberator of Haiti, François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture, and to Black Santa. It’s erratic enough behavior to get on the FBI’s radar, who deem Moses and his Star of Six group a possible threat.
What follows is a “Veep”-like look at the behind-the-scenes fumblings of the FBI.

We’ve got a trailer for a super crazy movie called The Day Shall Come, starring newcomer Marchánt Davis, Anna Kendrick, Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), and Denis O’Hare, as well as comedian Jim Gaffigan. The film is directed by Christopher Morris, who has directed on the series Veep.
The film looks totally different, and like a really intriguing story. Here’s a rundown for the story it tells:
An impoverished preacher who brings hope to the Miami projects is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea his sponsor works for the FBI who plan to turn him into a criminal by fueling his madcap revolutionary dreams.
I’m extremely interested in this movie, and can’t wait to check it out. Watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think. The Day Shall Come hits theaters on September 27th.

The day has come for “Four Lions” director Christopher Morris, as IFC Films has acquired the U.S. rights to his latest film “The Day Shall Come,” the indie distributor announced Tuesday.

Almost a decade ago, British satirist Christopher Morris took an exciting turn into the filmmaking arena with “Four Lions,” a subversive post-9/11 romp about bumbling Islamic jihadists whose murderous plot goes haywire with hilarious results. The movie’s brilliance stemmed from the way it poked fun at the terrorist’s slapstick endeavors without negating the tragedy of their murderous convictions.
His long-overdue followup “The Day Shall Come” flips that equation, targeting a team of clumsy Miami-based FBI agents whose bureaucratic process for taking on terrorists yields the same dysfunctional results. This time, Morris has less command over the edgy material, positioning his modern-day Keystone Cops in a series of smarmy vignettes that don’t cut quite as deep. But it still delivers a scathing and often very funny indictment of homeland insecurities.

Writer-director Christopher Morris, who won a BAFTA for Best Debut with 2010’s Four Lions, despite having directed four episodes of the television series “Veep” over the past several years, has yet to unveil his sophomore project. The Day Shall Come filmed across the Us, Santo Domingo, and Dominican Republic is certainly promising with a cast consisting of Anna Kendrick, Danielle Brooks, Jim Gaffigan, Michael Mays, Adam David Thompson, Rupert Friend and Denis O’Hare in what might potentially be in the vein of his debut feature. His latest is produced by Emile Sherman, Iain Canning and Anne Carey while Danish Dp Marcel Zyskind (the regular cinematographer of Michael Winterbottom) lensed the film.…...

Christopher Morris brought Four Lions to Sundance in 2010, and his follow up went into production in the summer of 2017 in the Dominican Republic. The currently untitled film starring Anna Kendrick, Denis O’Hare, Miles Robbins and Jim Gaffigan didn’t shore up this year, so we are once again thinking this will be unveiled in Park City.

So according to Chortle, Anna Kendrick is starring in a film shot in secret by Four Lions director Chris Morris. In fact, the production is so secret that all we know is that it was shot in the Dominican Republic and Florida, as well as co-starring Kayvan Novak, James Adomian, and Danielle Brooks. No plot details have been revealed, besides a set picture of Kendrick in an FBI uniform: "Body army... Read More...

It’s hard to believe nearly eight years have passed since Chris Morris dropped his debut film, “Four Lions.” The searing comedy earned an armload of awards and nominations, and while he seemed poised for big things, we didn’t hear anything from Morris. While he dipped into American television with four episodes of “Veep,” it didn’t seem like the filmmaker had anything on the boil. We were wrong.

There are few talents we need in the world right now as much as Armando Iannucci. The Scottish writer and director has been a familiar comedy face in the UK for a long time (helping to create the seminal “The Day Today,” which launched the careers of Chris Morris and Steve Coogan), but he really broke through in the U.S. with his political sitcom “The Thick Of It,” the Oscar-nominated film spin-off “In The Loop,” and the America-set spiritual sequel “Veep.”
All three share qualities — a docudrama-ish quality, brilliant comic performances across the board, some of the greatest swearing and insults in the history of the English language — but more than that, they skewer the low-key incompetencies, egos and absurdities of the political world like few others, and in ways which both capture their times, and prove oddly prescient.

Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, Venom, is preparing to add another up-and-coming name to its roster; according to The Hollywood Reporter, Rogue One co-star Riz Ahmed is in talks to appear opposite Tom Hardy, who’s playing the titular symbiote. There’s no word yet on who Ahmed would play in the movie, although he won’t be Carnage, the film’s already-announced villain.
Sony is trying to carve out its own little mini-cinematic universe with its Spider-Man-adjacent properties, with Venom and a Black Cat and Silver Sable film in the works. Ahmed, meanwhile, continues to make a name for himself; last year, he appeared in the Star Wars spin-off, plus, HBO’s The Night Of, after eye-catching supporting turns in previous years in films like Nightcrawler and Chris Morris’ cult classic terrorism comedy Four Lions.

Show almost anyone a picture of Riz Ahmed and they’ll be able to place him in something. It could be from Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker’s 2008 Big Brother zombie invasion satire, Dead Set. It might be as Aaron Kalloor, the Mark Zuckerberg techno genius who occupied one of the more interesting threads from Jason Bourne. More realistically, it’ll be from last year’s billion dollar Star Wars blockbuster, Rogue One, in which he played conflicted pilot Bodhi Rook. The point is, you can’t pigeon hole the guy.
Take this week’s City of Tiny Lights, in which Ahmed plays a London private eye investigating the case of a missing sex worker. The film might drown in its own dimly lit gloom, but the fact you stick with it is down to another chameleonic performance from the young Brit. You can read our review here.

He’s the outspoken British Star Wars actor who still gets interrogated at airports. Carole Cadwalladr steps inside the confusing world of Riz Ahmed
One thing about Riz Ahmed: he is not boring. We’re in a central London hotel room as part of the massive media blitz for Rogue One, the latest multimillion dollar incarnation of the Star Wars franchise. And maybe one day he’ll become boring, or learn how to be boring, but even though we’re at the very heart of the Hollywood publicity machine, surrounded by soft furnishings in all shades of beige, Ahmed is not boring. In the decade since Michael Winterbottom cast him in his first film, The Road to Guantanamo, he’s built up a critically acclaimed body of work, including his breakout performance in Chris Morris’s jihadist satire Four Lions. The rise of “Black Mirror” has been a fascinating thing to watch. It first aired fairly quietly in the fall of 2011 on the U.K.’s Channel 4, with a short run of three episodes. It hailed from creator Charlie Brooker who, though he had a couple of TV series behind him (hipster satire “Nathan Barley,” co-created with “Four Lions” helmer Chris Morris, and zombie-reality-tv miniseries “Dead Set”), was best known as a TV critic and on-air personality.

Its opening image, a painting of Paris, makes neighbors of that city’s default metonyms; no matter that the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe are separated in real life by a half-hour walk and the River Seine. Adhering to the needs of spoon-fed geography, an inscription confirms that this is indeed Paris, France. And then, more text further satisfies the cliché of clarity,...

It.s been a long road from your first film, Ned, to Down Under. Were you developing other things in the meantime?
I was. I finished Ned in 2003 [when] it was released, but the actual birth of that movie to its release was incredibly quick. Part of that was due to the subject matter of that film and the genre it was, and [also] the age that I was. There was a lot about that experience that was really great and a lot about it that was exactly the opposite. I look back on that film. I was going to say [it was] my film school but I.ve learned a lot since then as well. It taught me a lot about the industry, and it actually got me used to failing. Developing anything and wanting to make films, you.ve got to get used to failure and build up a resilience to it.

Lincoln Younes and Rahel Romahn in Down Under.
Lincoln Younes has appeared in City Homicide, Love Child, Home and Away and Hiding. If checks in with him on the publicity tour for his first feature lead role, in Abe Forsythe's Down Under.
How did you get your start?
I did a global rock eisteddfod in Japan when I was in Year 9. I was an incredibly shy kid. Performance was probably the last thing I wanted to do but I always had a real interest in people and in what made them tick. I loved the empathy side of people and trying to understand what.s behind it all. I wanted to play soccer professionally for a lot of my formative years, and then I chose acting, and I moved from Bendigo to Melbourne and my first audition was a show called Tangle, which I got. I played Ben Mendelsohn.s son.

No genre is more subjective than comedy. What makes one person laugh may make another cringe. Some “comedies” may only result in a few chuckles while watching, yet are heightened as one looks back. Others may cause constant laughter, yet are forgettable after theater’s lights come on.
With Seth Rogen‘s latest comedy, Sausage Party, arriving in theaters this week, we’ve set out to reflect on the millennium’s comedies that have most excelled. To note: we only stuck with feature-length works of 60 minutes or longer and, to make room for a few more titles, our definition of “the 21st century” stretched to include 2000.

Channel 4 Chief Executive David Abraham has announced that Daniel Battsek will join the corporation as Director of Film4, following the news that David Kosse is to step down to join Stx Entertainment.
Battsek will join Film4 in July, relocating to the UK from New York after fulfilling his contract as President of Cohen Media Group - where he has overseen the acquisition and release of projects including back-to-back Oscar® nominees "Timbuktu" and "Mustang," as well as a development and production slate of films that includes John Williams’ renowned novel Stoner, a co-production with Film4. Prior to this role Daniel was President of National Geographic Films, and before that President, Filmed Entertainment at Miramax Films.
David Kosse will continue working for Film4 during the transition period on a consultancy basis until October.
Battsek will inherit the increased spend announced by David Abraham and David Kosse in February 2016 of £25 million for the year, with the ambition of maintaining similar increased levels of Film4 funding in future years.
Under Battsek’s leadership, Film4 will continue to seek out new partnerships like those announced with Fox Searchlight and Fp Films in February, which allow the company to take a greater stake in certain projects, with a view to seeing more of the returns flowing back to Film4 for investment in the company’s future slate.
Battsek also inherits a development slate which includes new work from Lenny Abrahamson, Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrew Haigh, Steve McQueen, Martin McDonagh, Clio Barnard, Bart Layton, Garth Davis and Mike Leigh. as well as completed or near completed films from Andrea Arnold, Ben Wheatley, Ang Lee, Paddy Considine, Susanna White, John Cameron Mitchell, acclaimed theatre director Benedict Andrews, newcomer Toby Macdonald and Danny Boyle.
Channel 4 Chief Executive David Abraham commented: “Daniel Battsek’s passion for independent, filmmaker driven cinema, and experience in film production, development and distribution at the highest level in both the Us and UK markets, are second to none. He’s a perfect fit for the Film4 brand. We’re thrilled to bring this talented British executive back to the UK.
“As demonstrated by our record breaking year at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs, Daniel will inherit a Film4 business in fine creative and commercial health from David Kosse. We’re sad he couldn’t have been with us longer but he’s had an incredible impact in the time he has led the division. Both the exciting upcoming slate and the increased funding for original film we announced earlier this year are testament to the successful strategy implemented by David. I’m delighted that he will be working alongside Daniel on a smooth transition over the summer and ensuring that it is business as usual for Film4 over this period.”
Daniel Battsek added: "I am hugely honored to have been offered this opportunity. My career began with so many of Film4's early productions and I have retained strong ties with British filmmakers throughout my time in the Us. Joining Film4 feels almost like coming full circle. I look forward to returning to the UK and putting the experience I've gained on both sides of the Atlantic to good use."
David Kosse said: "Film4 is a unique organization and a very special brand and it was a difficult decision to leave, but joining Stx at this stage is an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. Over almost two years, I'm incredibly proud to have put in place a new strategy for Film4 which has boosted funding for the film industry to a record level and to have introduced an exciting new slate of high quality productions and developments with a diverse group of filmmakers. David Abraham and the Channel 4 leadership team have been fantastic partners since day one and I look forward to continuing to work with them over the coming months."
Having worked at the cutting edge of the independent sector on three continents, Battsek brings 30 years’ production, development and distribution experience to Film4. For the last three years Battsek has served as President of New York based Cohen Media Group, where he has overseen the acquisition and release of arthouse/crossover releases including back-to-back Oscar® nominees "Timbuktu" and "Mustang," as well as a development and production slate of films that includes John Williams’ renowned novel Stoner, a co-production with Film4. Prior to that he spent 2½ years at National Geographic Films, where as President he acquired projects for development and production including the Oscar® nominated documentary Restrepo, as well as National Geographic branded large screen and Imax 3D projects.
Battsek relocated from the UK to New York in 2005, where he served for five years as President, Filmed Entertainment at Miramax Films. Projects he greenlit and/or acquired there included Oscar® winners "The Queen," "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" and Oscar® nominees "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and "Happy-Go-Lucky". From 1991 to 2005, Battsek held the position of Evp and Managing Director, UK Distribution and European Production & Acquisitions at Buena Vista International, UK, where he oversaw all aspects of UK distribution for 18-25 releases per annum from Walt Disney Studios and their partners including Pixar and Miramax Films. At Bvi, Battsek also set up a Comedy Production Label in 2001 which financed and produced three films, including "Calendar Girls" and "Kinky Boots." Prior to that, Battsek spent six years as Managing Director of Palace Pictures, where he was responsible for the acquisition and distribution of quality independent titles from around the world for release in the UK, and he also spent three years as a Sales & Marketing Executive for Hoyts Entertainment in Australia, where he first cut his teeth in distribution.

Some movies become classics for all the wrong reasons. 2010’s Four Lions, the British terrorist spoof about a crew of bumbling would-be bombers, still rattles in my mind whenever terrorism hits the news. Isil/Isis attacks on Brussels, gunmen in Mali, and continued atrocities in Turkey plague innocent people while those unaffected battle responses ranging from complacent abstractions (“Thoughts and prayers to #Brussels”) to exploitative grandstanding (“Build a wall”). The great strength of Four Lions is its response to extremism: laughter. Successfully wielded in the Ku Klux Klan scene in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 Western Django Unchained, there is no more effective way to remove the power of hate than by reframing that hate as complete incompetence. Never shying from the dangerous reality – guns and horseback lynch mobs retain their flame-licked horror – Tarantino understands that the true power stems from a fearful response, so he makes his terrorists buffoons with ill-cut hoods. Four Lions...

A secret service agent slammed a Time magazine photographer to the ground at today’s Donald Trump rally at Redford University in Virginia. Veteran White House photographer Chris Morris told CNN’s Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta that the altercation occurred when he stepped outside the press area. “I stepped 18 inches out of the pen and he grabbed me by the neck and started choking me then he slammed me to the ground,” Morris told reporters outside the venue. Time has since responded to the situation and expressed concerns to the Secret Service. “We are relieved that Chris is feeling Ok,...

Move by National Media Museum signals concern over regional provision in the UK for the arts.
As a furore brewed in the UK over the decision to move much of the National Media Museum’s photography collection to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London it was also announced by museum director Jo Quinton-Tulloch that the Bradford International Film Festival would not be returning.
The festival, which began in 1995, had slowly carved itself a reputation as a well-regarded event on the national and international circuit. With a number of significant premieres during its history – include a widely publicised UK premiere of Chris Morris’ Four Lions in 2010 – the festival also welcomed numerous guests over the years including Kenneth Branagh, Brian Cox, Ken Loach, Richard Attenborough, John Hurt, and Terry Gilliam amongst many others.
The festival was also seen as a key component in helping Bradford being named the very first Unesco City of Film.
