“Everybody Loves Raymond” creator and “Somebody Feed Phil” host Phil Rosenthal knows a thing or two about Hollywood, which is why Ktla’s Sam Rubin asked him about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes Saturday morning. When it comes to what is really at the heart of what’s happening, Rosenthal pinned it all on one thing: “Greed.”
He said, “I’ve spoken to the people who are heading up the thing, they don’t know [when it will end].” The problem is “greed … and they’re not in the entertainment business, these people. This is not about studios and networks and writers and actors. This is about Corporate America versus the worker.”
When will Hollywood’s dual strikes end? @PhilRosenthal offers his thoughts. pic.twitter.com/GLyS0HTqXg
— Sam Rubin (@SamOnTV) August 31, 2023
Rosenthal continued, “It’s very obvious that’s what’s happening. These giant conglomerations, they have the entertainment division as almost like an afterthought.

Sam Rubin, the longtime entertainment reporter at Ktla-tv in Los Angeles, will face off with Joy Benedict, a reporter at L.A.’s CBS 2 and Kcal, in the election to represent broadcasters on SAG-AFTRA’s L.A. board of directors.
Rubin is running on presidential candidate Matthew Modine’s Membership First opposition slate, while Benedict was announced earlier this month as running on the ruling party’s Unite for Strength slate headed by presidential candidate Fran Drescher. Election ballots will be mailed to members August 3 and counted September 2.
Rubin, who has been the entertainment anchor on the Ktla Morning News since 1991, said he’s concerned about recent changes in eligibility requirements at the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan. Those changes sparked a lawsuit that claims that they “illegally discriminate based on age” – a charge flatly denied by the plan’s trustees, who say the changes were necessary to keep the plan afloat.

Jimmy Kimmel will host the show, which will be broadcast live on ABC on Sunday at 5 p.m. Pt/8 p.m. Et. The free broadcast will be available to anyone with an antenna, cable or satellite.
People who have cut the cord can also watch the Emmys with monthly subscriptions to various streaming services. With a monthly cost of $54.99, Hulu With Live TV and AT&T TV Now will livestream this year’s Emmys. YouTube TV, which has a $64.99 monthly fee,...

The 72nd Emmy Awards are finally upon us, and the 2020 ceremony will be unlike any other.
Since the pandemic has necessitated a virtual ceremony, everyone will be tuning in from home as the awards take place live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but with no audience.
The ceremony will air live on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. Et / 5 p.m. Pt on ABC. The show will also be available to stream with subscriptions on Hulu + Live TV, Fubo TV, and YouTube TV.
There are not, unfortunately, any totally free options for streaming the 2020 Emmys. Junket Prods. saw it coming. Back in February, when President Trump said the virus would soon dwindle to “one or two people,” veteran behind-the-scenes producers Jody Pritchard (in Los Angeles) and Suzanne Marvier (in New York) rushed to get ahead of the crisis. Soon, they mounted three virtual press junkets for Netflix: “Coffee & Kareem,” with stars Ed Helms and Taraji P. During an appearance on Ktla 5 Morning News on Thursday, comedian Kathy Griffin had a tense exchange with Ktla 5 weatherman Mark Kriski about the representation of women in comedy.
As Griffin was discussing the fallout to her now-infamous Trump photo with Ktla anchor Sam Rubin, she admitted that her career has continued to take a hit.
“By the way, I still do not have one single day of paid work ahead of me for the rest of my life,” she said. “Now you tell me that’s not because I’m a 58-year-old female in comedy.”
“I think there’s a lot of 58-year-old comedians that are working out there,” Kriski, sitting at the other end of the anchors’ desk, said.
“Are you? Name five women,” Griffin responded.
“Uh, I’m not into the comedy thing,” Kriski responded.

There used to be a term for people like Chris Burrous, the Ktla news anchor and field reporter who died Thursday at age 43. This term pretty much disappeared when everyone with WiFi and a WordPress blog site considered themselves a communicator. The term is “citizen journalist,” and that’s what Chris Burrous was, and that’s why he will be missed.
Chris was the weekend anchor at Ktla, a Los Angeles-based TV station whose morning news became a juggernaut in content delivery. The news was personality driven, and Chris’ place in the motley crew that occupied living rooms, kitchens and cars every morning was a testament to brilliant programming. He was like the kid brother whose role was eclipsed by the more stalwart, fame-familiar older siblings, and that’s the feeling I got about him when I watched him anchor.

The Kardashian kids may have an enviably glamorous life, but it must not feel that unusual if you were born into it! Kim Kardashian revealed that her kids actually don't know that their family is famous, despite the over-the-top birthday parties and constant cameras following them around! "It's pretty intense, but like at home I'm not known," Kim told Sam Rubin on ITV's This Morning , when he asked how it feels to be so over-the-top famous. Kim says her children don't see her as anything special (besides mommy) and, in turn, they don't have an idea of how well-known they are, either. "Like my kids have no clue what's going on," she continued. "So, I don't really feel it, I spend most of my time at home, so, I mean, obviously I get it, I know it." It sounds like her family's ongoing closeness and realness is what keeps them grounded,...

Terry Gilliam's distaste for mainstream Hollywood moviemaking, particularly when it comes to blockbusters, is well documented. However, the director's opinion on the subject isn't necessarily reflexive. Sitting down recently for a one hour conversation with Sam Rubin as part of LiveTalksLA, the director shared his mixed opinion on this summer's "Ant-Man," a picture he enjoyed, with some reservation. “Strangely enough, I watched ‘Ant-Man’ on the plane coming over here. Now, ‘Ant-Man’ I quite liked, I think there’s a lot of really good stuff in there. And technically, it’s brilliant. But it’s also predictable, ultimately. We know where it’s gonna go, so the structure and the shape is all there. And okay, they play with it in various ways. But, that’s my problem, I don’t get the surprise I used to get, I want to go and be more surprised," he explained. Read More:...

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. From Pulp Fiction to The Avengers, Samuel L Jackson is best known for playing Hollywood's toughest and baddest.
Having starred in some of the biggest blockbusters of the past 20 years, Jackson has reached megastar status but hit the headlines this week after being mistaken for fellow actor Laurence Fishburne in a live television interview.
Ktla reporter Sam Rubin offended the actor by beginning his interview by asking Jackson about his recent Super Bowl commercial. The Star Wars actor was understandably confused before it dawned on him that Rubin was referring to the new Kia Sedan advert, in which Fishburne features.
The already-awkward interview only became more cringe-worthy as Jackson gave the embarrassed reporter a well-deserved telling off, saying: "We don't all look alike! We may all be black and famous but we don't all look alike! There's more than one black guy doing a commercial. I'm the 'What's in your wallet?...

Reporter Sam Rubin confusing Jackson with Laurence Fishburne is an all-too-common mistake that reminds black people of our outsider status

Sam Rubin, entertainment reporter for the "No 1 morning show in Hollywood", has just made an epic blunder – confusing his guest, actor Samuel L Jackson (who's black), with Laurence Fishburne (he's also black, and also an actor), who really did appear in the commercial.

Born in Santa Monica, California, on April 23, 1928, Shirley Jane Temple began taking dance lessons at the age of three and appeared in her first movie at the age of four. Her first significant role came in 1934, when she was chosen to star in Stand Up and Cheer. She was signed to a year-long contract with Fox based on her performance in that movie and a string of feel-good song-and-dance movies followed. Notes Black in her 1988 autobiography Child Star:
