The action thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners was recently given a limited theatrical release in the United States, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to talk to one of the film’s stars: Jack Gleeson, who may be best known for playing the role of Joffrey Baratheon on 27 episodes of Game of Thrones. You can watch Bumbray’s interview with Gleeson in the video embedded above, and you can read his 8/10 review of In the Land of Saints and Sinners at This Link.

When you have the SAG Award nominated ensemble of “American Fiction” – John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Tracee Ellis Ross and Jeffrey Wright (also individually nominated in male lead and Oscar nominated for the film) you have to ask them where it all began. In discussing their first jobs for the union, Ross revealed that, like many actors, she started with a commercial – this one for Infiniti cars.
But her co-stars soon revealed surprisingly momentous stories for their first SAG-AFTRA jobs. Wright noted his onscreen debut was opposite Burt Lancaster and Sidney Poitier in the 1991 miniseries “Separate but Equal” about the Brown v. Board of Education court case. “My first single was opposite Sidney Poitier,” Wright revealed. Alexander started in a 1986 film called “My Little Girl” that starred Mary Stuart Masterson, Geraldine Page and – in her film debut – Jennifer Lopez. And Ortiz

When Bonnie Timmermann is helping Ridley Scott or Michael Mann find the perfect person for a role in films like “Black Hawk Down” and “Heat,” she will buy auditioning actors pizza or Chinese food and grill them about their lives and ambitions. Sooner or later, they’ll get around to reading the scenes, but Timmermann has an innate sense of what to do to put performers at ease.
“You need to understand who they are, so when they get in front of a director you know how to help them deliver their best work,” she says. “The only way you can do that is to understand their psyche.”
And when she’s not overseeing casting calls, you’ll find Timmermann at screenings or plays on the prowl for talent. She likes to keep Polaroids and videos of actors she’s tried out — even the ones that she’s turned down,...

NCIS fans can’t wait to hear more about season 21 — but we’ll be missing one of the most significant characters from the show. David McCallum played medical examiner Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard for 20 seasons, even outlasting Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Before McCallum was cast in the series, serious disagreements existed about him joining the crew. Here’s what a series director said about threatening to cancel NCIS over McCallum.
‘NCIS’ creators were ready to cancel the show if Ducky actor David McCallum wasn’t cast
NCIS fans can’t imagine the series without David McCallum playing Ducky Mallard. While it doesn’t seem like anyone else could play the medical examiner-turned-historian, there was a lot of disagreement regarding McCallum’s casting at the start of the series.
Past NCIS director James Whitmore Jr. recounted the drama to The Hollywood Reporter. “When they cast David McCallum as Ducky,...

Submarine Entertainment is picking up worldwide sales rights on Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial debut “Crumb Catcher.” The move comes just ahead of the darkly comic thriller’s Fantastic Fest world premiere.
Skotchdopole wrote, directed, edited, and produced the movie and Submarine Entertainment, a notable sales and production company, will launch sales out of the festival, which runs from Sept. 21 to Sept. 28 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. “Crumb Catcher” was described by Fantastic Fest programmer Anna Bogutskaya as a “chamber piece that melds extreme anxiety with the worst salesmanship imaginable.” The film follows a newlywed couple held captive by an entrepreneur desperate to finance his outlandish invention with a blackmail plot.
With ten years of experience working with Glass Eye Pix, the New York independent genre production outfit led by horror auteur Larry Fessenden, Skotchdopole has amassed numerous credits on several films, including working as the cinematographer on Fessenden’s “Depraved,...

Most giant film festivals are all about the present — and future — of cinema by their very nature. Audiences assemble to see premieres of the latest films that will come to define the upcoming months and discover new talent who will make their mark on the form. But given the collective cinephilia of the crowd, smart festivals also devote some of their programming to pay tribute to the rich archives of the medium that deserves recognition or rediscovery.
After two years dormant during the pandemic, the Venice Film Festival's classics sidebar came roaring back. The fest presented a plethora of new restorations that will no doubt trickle out through repertory cinemas and onto specialized physical media. But this section also included a handful of documentaries about cinema itself that took a critical lens to exploring the history and legacy of performers and projects alike. A loving tribute to veteran casting director Bonnie Timmermann, Simon Wallon’s Bonnie shoots itself in the foot in its opening minutes. As we watch rough VHS tapes documenting the subject’s early interviews with actors like Benicio Del Toro, Natalie Portman and Kate Winslet — all so impossibly young, beautiful and lovable — we already resent the more mundane docu-stuff to come. Why not just gather all these tapes you can get permission for, have Timmermann do a bit of intro and make it a series for streaming? Most movie buffs would watch hours and hours before getting their fill.
Admittedly, that wouldn’t really be a movie. And Wallon succeeds if, in throwing this stuff up front, he means to convey the excitement a casting agent feels when getting to know someone the whole world is about to love. We get it; we want more.

While she may not be a household name compared to the directors that she has worked for, Bonnie Timmermann’s IMDb reads as a decade-spanning watch list of some of the best films ever made. The legendary casting director behind “The Karate Kid,” “Manhunter,” “Bull Durham,” “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Armageddon,” and about a hundred other films that you’ve seen gets an earnest, if not exactly insightful, documentary about her work in Simon Wallon’s fawning “Bonnie.”
Using direct interviews with Timmermann, as well as friends and colleagues, and never-before-seen audition tapes, “Bonnie” is perhaps more interesting for what it reveals about the audition process than anything about Bonnie herself — who oddly remains a cipher despite the film being ostensibly about her.

Casting director Bonnie Timmermann, behind such films as “Heat” and “Dirty Dancing,” finds herself on the opposite side of the camera in Venice doc “Bonnie,” directed by Simon Wallon. Brian Cox, Mark Ruffalo, Benicio del Toro and Melissa Leo are featured, while Kinology is handling sales.
“It’s almost as if she was the one being auditioned. I wanted to treat her almost like a character in a movie. She is looking straight into the eyes of the audience,” says Wallon.
Adapting to the new role was hard, Timmermann tells Variety in Venice, but luckily it came with some perks.
“Simon put me in a taxi in Times Square. There were lights and cameras everywhere, and somebody screamed: ‘Lady Gaga is in the car!’ I just struck a pose. For two minutes, I was a star.”
Timmermann has discovered plenty of stars over the years, with their old casting tapes now resurfacing in the film.

Michael Mann spent over a decade trying to get the script that would become his magnum opus, "Heat," made. All along the way, he fine-tuned it; he even shot a beta run of the story as a TV pilot, titled "L.A. Takedown." A notorious perfectionist, Mann's determination to get every detail right meant that casting hadn't even wrapped yet once the cameras were rolling. According to "Heat" casting director Bonnie Timmermann:

The pic is directed by Israeli team, Sharon Maymon and Tal Granit and will mark the third collaboration between producers and directors after The Farewell Party, which premiered in Venice and Toronto Iff 2014 and Flawless which premiered at 2018 Tribeca Iff. Eddie Murphy is working the room. Or trying to at least. A New York post-screening party for “Dolermite is My Name” has gathered a lot of famous fans. And they’re kind of mobbing him.
“Eddie is a genius,” marvels legendary casting director Bonnie Timmermann. “I think he’s back. And maybe he never left, but he’s so funny and breathtaking in this film. Once good, always good.” But is he an Oscar contender? “I will definitely vote for him. If I could hand it to him right now I would.”
“It was heartfelt. I think he deserves an Oscar,” says former “Saturday Night Live” impressionist Jay Pharoah. “He was captivating and inspirational.” When I point out that it’s possible “SNL’s” erstwhile Mr. Robinson could be up against Mr. Rogers, Pharoah laughs. “Quite the paradox. I’m waiting to see what Tom Hanks does, I think he’s gonna kill it.

John Belushi was a comedy comet. There was no one else like him, and his bright flight was amazing to behold — until it tragically flamed out in 1982 when he died of a drug overdose. A dozen filmmakers could make a dozen different interesting movies about his life and times, especially since he — more than probably any other Saturday Night Live alum — helped define what that now-iconic show would be. In 1989, Michael Chiklis starred as Belushi in Wired, a poorly received effort that featured Belushi’s ghost reflecting on his life to biographer Bob Woodward. The energetic comedian deserved better.

After much speculation as to who would take on the responsibility of portraying the storied comedian, Film 360 announced Monday that Emile Hirsch, 28, has signed on to play John Belushi in director Steve Conrad’s still-untitled biopic.
The long-gestating biopic only recently regained traction when Conrad, who wrote The Pursuit of Happyness, The Weather Man, and Ben Stiller’s upcoming The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, signed on to both write and direct. The Hangover’s Todd Phillips was originally slated to direct. Reports surfaced last week that he’d held meetings with Hirsch and Workaholics lead Adam DeVine about taking on the role.

Emile Hirsch signed to star in a film about the short but eventful life of John Belushi. The film’s scripted and directed by Steve Conrad, based on the Judith Belushi Pisano and Tanner Colby book Belushi. Hirsch is not an obvious choice to play the comic actor who soared to fame in Animal House, the original Saturday Night Live cast and films like Blues Brothers before dying at age 33 in 1982 at the Chateau Marmont Hotel to become a cautionary tale of excess. The film, which shoots next spring in New York, is the first feature on Belushi’s life and death since 1989′s Wired. That film starred Michael Chiklis and was based on the Bob Woodward book. It was not embraced by Belushi’s widow, who’s part of the new version. Maybe it was too soon, or just too bracing a look at a brilliant comic’s demise.
