The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

Christine Wada, who earned her first career Emmy nomination for her costumes on “Loki,” was not well versed in all things Marvel when she joined the Disney+ show. Luckily, Professor Tom Hiddleston was there to save the day. The actor famously held a Loki School to give the cast and crew a crash course on all things God of Mischief.
“I took notes and raised my hand. mainly armor questions and horn questions,” Wada tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Working with Marvel, you have access to so many knowledgeable people and so many resources, but having Tom give you the backstory of of Loki, it does really inform your choices moving forward and especially because [the first season] was carving out a new look at a new trajectory and a new world for Loki. No one knew what to expect from Marvel during its first year of Emmy eligibility. Bids in the craft and technical categories felt like a given, and there had been hope that the popularity and quality of “WandaVision” would translate into a few Emmy nominations, but nothing felt certain. After all, the feature films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe haven’t exactly been awards magnets. So when “WandaVision” earned 23 nominations — including for Best Limited Series and acting bids for stars Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany and Kathryn Hahn — it was a pleasant surprise.
Now, a full year later, with several more shows under its belt — the time-traveling drama “Loki,” the Christmas-themed comedy “Hawkeye,” the animated “What If…?” and the limited series “Moon Knight” are all eligible this year — Marvel is staring down a second Emmy season that is just as confusing as the first. Last year, “WandaVision” took home just three...

[Editor’s Note: This is the second of two parts analyzing the sci-fi craft contenders. Click here to read part one.]
It’s been a great season for large-scale, character-driven, socially relevant sci-fi dramas: Marvel/Disney+’s time-jumping “Loki” and mind-bending “Moon Knight;” Isaac Asimov’s legendary “Foundation” (Apple TV+); the sequel to Nicolas Roeg’s cult classic, “The Man Who Fell to Earth” (Showtime); the latest Star Trek” and “Star Wars” spin-offs, “Strange New Worlds” (Paramount+) and “The Book of Boba Fett” (Lucasfilm/Disney+); and the return of the blockbuster “Stranger Things” (Netflix).
But as you break the shows down in terms of their Emmy crafts potential and how they stack up against one other, four big questions emerge:
1. Can “Loki” and “Moon Knight” Pull a “WandaVision”?
What they offer: After the wild retro TV antics of “WandaVision,” Marvel followed up this season with two trippier shows: “Loki,” in which the titular Norse God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) teamed up with detective Mobius (Owen Wilson) to capture dangerous time criminals,...

One of the closest relationships an actor has on a movie set is with a costume designer, who is there from the beginning and in such intimate settings as a fitting room to help them find their character. And the crux of that relationship comes down to trust, according to the four costume designers on our Meet the Experts panel, moderated by this author (watch the exclusive video above).
“You want the actor to go to camera in something that they’re completely at ease and they feel that they’re inhabiting they’re character in, no matter what you’re doing, whether it’s a period film, fantasy or contemporary,” Mary Zophres said. “That’s probably job No. 2. Job No. 1 is you make sure the costume is helping to tell the story and helping to tell the story of that character and tell the story of the script. So...

We are just under a week away from the Orange BAFTA Film Awards so now seems an appropriate time to consider who might win the prize for Best Costume Design (it will be a period drama) and why (because all the nominations are). We should again clarify that Clothes on Film enjoy period and fantasy costume just as much as contemporary, But we do consider it a shame that the latter category is often overlooked by simple virtue of being too good to be seen.
If you have been taking advantage of Orange Wednesdays (and who doesn’t?), i.e. texting Film to 241 from any Orange mobile to get two-for-one cinema tickets, you will hopefully have seen most, if not all of these BAFTA costume design...

It’s been all go with award nomination announcements for costume design over the past two weeks. Here is our round-up of the big three: BAFTA, Cdg and Oscar.
First up the BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Film Awards:
The Artist – Mark Bridges
Hugo – Sandy Powell
Jane Eyre – Michael O’Connor
My Week with Marilyn – Jill Taylor
Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy – Jacqueline Durran
Perhaps the most surprising nomination, even though it shouldn’t be, is Jacqueline Durran for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Overruling the costumers’ chapter vote for Anonymous (Lisy Christl), general voters chose Tinker, Tailor instead – and with good reason. Critic Guy Lodge goes into detail about the film’s costumes in this article, so we’ll not tread on his toes. One...

The Costume Design Guild has spoken! As with all guild awards... it's a combination of "Really?" and interesting "Oh, yeah!" choices.
Clothes Horse Royals in "W.E." via Arianne Phillips
Period Films
Mark Bridges for The Artist
Michael O'Connor for Jane Eyre
Sharen Davis for The Help
Sandy Powell for Hugo
Arianne Phillips for W.E.
Good news: I have an interview coming up with Arianne Phillips, who is one of my heroes. And not just because she's worked with Madonna for 15 years or so.
Notable Omissions: Anonymous, Captain America (unless they considered it a fantasy), My Week With Marilyn, A Dangerous Method, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Oscar transferrence? The costume designers within the Academy, a much smaller number than votes on the guild awards, tend to prefer period work to other types of work so you could theoretically see all of these nominees repeat at Oscar, though Phillips is certainly...

A diverse group of films including The Artist, Bridesmaids, and Thor have been nominated for the 14th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. The Guild nominated feature films in three different categories. For excellence in contemporary films, the nominees are Bridesmaids, with costumes by Leesa Evans and Christine Wada; The Descendants, Wendy Chuck; Drive, Erin Benach; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Trish Summerville; and Melancholia, Manon Rasmussen. Photos: Golden Globes' Red Carpet Arrivals Sandy Powell, who received the Cds’s Career Achievement Award in 2010, was nominated this year in the period film category for Hugo. That category also includes The

As the final guilds begin weighing in before Tuesday's Oscar nominations are announced, the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) has announced their nominees in three motion picture categories and the only film among my current predictions in the category not included is Sonia Grande for Midnight in Paris. Looking over the last couple years of nominations from the Cdg it looks as if the last three years have always delivered one film that ended up nominated for an Oscar that was not nominated by the Cdg. Could Midnight in Paris be that one? I do have Arianne Phillips just below the bubble line for her work on W.E. as well as Sharen Davis for her work on The Help. As a result of these nominations and just the shift I feel in the winds, I have updated my predictions for Best Costume ever so slightly, which is to say Jane Eyre...

Exclusive to Clothes on Film, Leesa Evans explains the tricky art of dressing six very different comic characters in Bridesmaids, i.e not overselling the humour.
Leaning primarily to comedy, Leesa Evans has been lead costume designer on over twenty films, including American Pie (1999) and Josie and the Pussycats (2001). She has also worked with producer Judd Apatow several times, e.g. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Get Him to the Greek (2010) and now Bridesmaids (2011, directed by Paul Feig). “I have a great working relationship with Judd Apatow,” Evans confirms “When he asked me to design the film I was thrilled to do it”.
Crammed with about as much riotous cringe humour as anyone could take, Bridesmaids centres on lovesick and near penniless Annie (Kristen Wiig), maid of honour to lifelong best friend...
