Jimmy Wang Yu, once a superstar of multiple Asian martial arts genres, died on Tuesday. He was 79.
News of his death in a Taipei hospital was posted on social media by Wang’s daughter Linda, herself a former Canto-pop star of the 1990s. She wrote that Wang passed away peacefully after a six-year battle with a chronic illness.
Born in Shanghai in 1943, Wang established his film career in Hong Kong, where he became a household name thanks to films including Chang Cheh’s 1967 classic “The One-Armed Swordsman,” which the first to hit the HK1 million benchmark at the Hong Kong box office. Another early hit was opposite martial arts actress Cheng Pei-pei in Chang’s “Golden Swallow” in 1968.
In total, Wang appeared in more than 60 martial arts films, many produced by the Shaw Brothers studio. Several were influential internationally and helped pave the way for the short and incandescent career of Bruce Lee,...

Jimmy Wang Yu, a Taiwanese actor who was once one of the biggest stars of martial arts cinema, died Tuesday in a Taipei hospital from an undisclosed illness he battled for six years. He was 79 and his death was announced on Instagram by his daughter, Linda Wang.
Born in Shanghai, China, Wang moved to Hong Kong and made his name as an action star at Shaw Brothers Studio during the 1960s. His best-known film was One-Armed Swordsman, which, as the title suggests, was about swordplay, a hallmark of his combat skills. The film would become the first Hong Kong film to make HK1million at the local box office.
The action films made Wang one of the biggest stars in Asia, and popular in the U.S. underground grindhouses that specialized in low-budget films.

Ed is traveling back home after giving his speech last night (I hope he took my advice and pictured everyone in jockstraps), so I'll be handling the Meme. Every time i give you one of these 80's puzzles, you impress me with your knowledge, so this one is a bit tougher. A few months ago I presented ten of my favorite 80's singers, and here are ten more. How many can you name?

Daffodil Days is one of the oldest and most beloved fundraising programs run by the American Cancer Society for the past 35 years. Every spring, the American Cancer Society offers daffodils to donors in appreciation for their contribution with the flower representing the hope of a future where cancer no longer exists.
This week, Entertainment Tonight’s Chris Jacobs visited The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center in Burbank, CA to help promote the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days campaign.
At the Disney Family Cancer Center, Chris Jacobs, whose own mother is a cancer survivor, met with cancer patient, Linda. He presented her with a bouquet of daffodils. Chris asked where she finds her strength in her fight against cancer, and Linda says, “Well I find it in my spiritual center. Get ready to hear a whole lot of "International Man of Mystery" jokes. Comedic actor Mike Myers of the "Austin Powers" and "Shrek" franchises married his longtime girlfriend Kelly Tisdale in a private ceremony ... five months ago.
A rep for Myers confirmed the news to the New York Post's Page Six that the 47-year-old "Saturday Night Live" alum wed Tisdale after roughly four years of dating. The rep told the newspaper that the under-the-radar ceremony for the secretive couple was "beautiful."
This marks the second marriage for Myers, who split from his wife of 12 years, writer/actress Robin Ruzan, in late 2005. Myers used Ruzan's mother Linda as the inspiration for his popular "SNL" skit "Coffee Talk" and credited Ruzan herself for encouraging him to make the "Austin Powers" films.

“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi
Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men.

Dallas 2011: Miss Ellie Dead, Bobby Remarried
TNT is currently negotiating deals with veteran Dallas stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray to head down south in early February to join a cast of hot, younger Ewings for a continuation of the 1978-91 primetime soap. And a lot has changed since we last visited with the Ewings in CBS's 1996 and 1998 reunion movies. For starters, Miss Ellie and Clayton are dead and buried on the ranch, reflecting the real-life losses of Howard Keel and Barbara Bel Geddes, and Bobby Ewing (Duffy) is remarried. But J.R. is still scheming and Sue Ellen has remained a powerful confidant and sober mother to all grown-up John Ross.
Ever the money man, Larry tells me he's still waiting for the bucks to be put on the table before he signs on. "I read the script and liked it," says Larry. "A lot of...

Sparrow Movie PosterThe Polish shot, campers-in-the-woods film Sparrow now has a blood red poster, with a tagline. The lines on the graphic read: "If you go down to the woods today you're sure of a big surprise." The teaser seems to echo that, as six friends find a stalker and a machete instead of campfires, ghost stories, and natural landscapes. This film has set a goal of releasing in 2010, possibly September, and this independent film hopes to bring a unique take to the cliche of campers being slaughtered in the woods theme. All the available info', including a second poster - showing the killer, is below.
The synopsis for Sparrow here:
"Six teenage friends, Matt, Cindy, Kirsty, Duncan, Sitcom, and Dawn set off on a camping trip in the forest. However ‘Camp Happy Dreams’ turns out to be ‘Camp Nightmare’ as legend states it’s the site of a presumed historic murder.

How you regard Geraldo Rivera depends heavily on how old you are. Viewers from the 1970s might recognize his award-winning contributions to ABC’s hard-hitting news programs. A decade later, he was infamous for Al Capone’s empty vault and his broken nose from a gutter-dwelling talk-show that helped usher in an era of trash-television. Nothing if not resilient, Rivera recovered to become a cable-news fixture during the O.J. Simpson trials and the Clinton impeachment, and today, he’s the host of Geraldo at Large and a frequent contributor to Fox News’ programs. For 40 years, virtually the only thing that...

Rod BaronBaron Entertainment, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; clients have recently booked roles on 'Californication,' 'Outsourced,' 'Terriers'The relationship between client and agent is delicate. On the one hand, there is the agent, most days too busy with the demands of the industry to take time to call or email each client to "catch up." On the other hand, there is the client, out there in the world, with many of life's distractions. Days turn into weeks, and the relationship between client and agent can go through periods when there simply is no "relationship." There is hope. Email. While we are all busy, most agents are in the office and on email at least 10 hours a day (if not 24 hours a day!). This makes it really easy to know where to find them, if they let you. We do. Maintaining a relationship with your agent in a way that is unobtrusive is key for us.

When we look at all the mistakes we have made in our lives (and there have been So Many!!!), one of the most obvious has been our unintentional neglect of the diva known as Linda Hogan. Made famous as the wife of Hulk Hogan (who is also engaged) on Hogan Knows Best, Linda stole our hearts with a blindingly blue-white smile and a quick mascara-caked wink. Days, even weeks, go by without us sitting upright in bed, covered in sweat and wondering what Linda Hogan is doing right that second. And for that we are truly sorry. So today, in addition to sending out that hearty apology, we would like to congratulate Linda on her recent engagement to her fiancé Charlie Hill, who looks like a male clone of Linda created of herself. Any woman should be so lucky! In celebration of this happy event, we would like to expound...

The second annual Migrating Forms experimental media festival will descend on the Anthology Film Archives in NYC on May 14-23 featuring the world’s greatest experimental videos, cultural documentaries, some that are a little of both; plus, several filmmaker retrospectives, some classic films and the endearingly popular Tube Time! video tournament.
Migrating Forms is such an entirely different beast than its predecessor, the New York Underground Film Festival, that we don’t have to keep saying this new event arose from the Nyuff’s ashes, do we? Ok, we’ll just say that one more time. Next year we won’t mention it because, even in it’s first year, Migrating Forms proved itself to be a completely unique arena in the field of experimental media making.
A couple of highlights from the lineup below: The new feature film by cultural explorer Kevin Jerome Everson, Erie, which captures life in...

Beck’s lyrics come to mind… “I’m a loser, baby, so why don’t you kill me?” For the team of fugitive ex-super secret CIA operatives in Sylvain White’s new motion picture adaptation of the DC graphic novel The Losers, this could be there theme song. The Losers opens nationwide in theaters on Friday, April 23, and it has the Movie Geeks reveling in their nostalgic action past. We’ve opened up the Top Ten time machine once again and stepped back into everyone’s favorite decade of Devo… the 1980’s, putting together our favorite Outrageous Action Flicks from the era.

"The Crazies" is not a zombie movie. Although it's a remake of an older movie made by zombie godfather George Romero, the crazy freaks that populate Breck Eisner's latest thriller aren't of the undead variety. For some reason, plenty of films – horror or comedy, good or bad – are inexplicably labeled as part of the zombie genre, even when there isn't an undead flesh-eater in sight.
Beyond the jump, we've listed a few flicks that some casual moviegoers might mistakenly describe as an exploration of the walking dead.
28 Days Later: Although a fantastic film on many levels, Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" isn't part of the zombie canon. The creatures that inhabit this horrific post-apocalyptic world are victims of a rage-inducing plague, one that's transferred by blood, but certainly doesn't cause death then subsequent flesh-hungry resurrection.
Cabin Fever: Violent transformation caused by contagious infection? Check. Spewing blood out of...

In 1922, Robert J. Flaherty gave us Nanook of the North, one of my favourite silent films and an early example of a snow movie--that is, a movie that wouldn't be what it is without its wintry landscape. In some films, snow is incidental--a pretty backdrop or a minor metaphor (like the snowfall that blankets the Bride's duel with O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill Vol. I). In others, a snowy climate is central to the story or sometimes even a character in its own right. Here are 10 movies that each use ice, snow, and cold in a specific way; together, they collectively demonstrate the range one symbol can have.
As with a typical Pajiba Guide, many genres are represented (don't worry Nanook fans -- silent film, documentary, and Inuit culture are all covered below in some form). And as with a typical Guide, apologies must be made for omitting many more...

"Avatar" director James Cameron's ex-wife Linda Hamilton isn't as close to him as his other ex, "Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow, is.
Hamilton started dating Cameron in the early 1990s when she starred in '"Terminator 2." They had a daughter in 1993. Cameron later took up with actress Suzy Amis, who had a small part in "Titanic."
He married Hamilton after the on-set "Titanic" affair with Amis, but then he left Hamilton for Amis a few months later.
"'Titanic' was the most painful thing in the world," says Linda in the Daily Mail. "But this wasn't because Jim was cheating on me. It was a painful time because we'd had a relationship where I'd push him away, then he'd push me away. Frankly, most of our relationship was us taking a big break."
Cameron and Amis are still married. But Hamilton thinks it won't last.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival and Conference has announced its initial slate of titles. The list is rife with hot world premieres (Kick-Ass), films fresh from Sundance (The Runaways, Cyrus), hot titles from the 2009 editions of Tiff and Cannes that haven't had much U.S. play (Enter the Void, Dogtooth, Trash Humpers), interesting documentaries (Lemmy, The People v. George Lucas) and much, much more. Simon Rumley's Red, White & Blue, which has received much praise on Twitch based on its Iffr screenings, will have its North American premiere.
Midnight programming courtesy of Fantastic Fest is also back with titles like Higanjima, Monsters, Serbian Film, Outcast, and a yet to be announced special film. Keep eye out for SXSW coverage at Twitch, but for now, pursue the massive list below (descriptions courtesy of SXSW).

Being that we couldn’t make Sundance this year we have decided to try and cover the tidbits of it anyway. We have chosen to use Twitter as our main resource for telling you what is hip, cool and worth knowing about this year’s Sundance Film Festival 2K10.
Some our close blog buddies and others are there as well, @rejects, @firstshowing, @slashfilm and @wearegeeks, so we will be looking at their tweets and some of the comments from their sites to give you the best buzz from the bloggers catching it all.
Day 1/Day 2
First off according to @firstshowing its snowing and that is almost the best part, sure its cold but according to Mr. Billington thats the best and most beautiful part. First off Alex seemed to not like Howl, a mockumentary about poet Allen Ginsberg (played by James Franco).
After Howl, everyone saw Spike Jonze’s newest short film I’m Here.

Neil Patrick Harris has joined Twitter. Confirmation has come from that reassuring "Verified Account" logo, and from Felicia Day. An hour after she sent out word that it was actually him, he had 15,000 followers and climbing. Granted, that's only 1% of Felicia's followers, but I have faith in Neil.
It appears that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (Enda) has been postponed in the House of Representatives, virtually guaranteeing that it's not going to happen until at least 2011. I'd let it bother me more, but 1) If I can get fired from AfterElton.com for being gay, well, that's a trick I'd like to see; and 2) There aren't actually any jobs in the universe anyhow at this point outside efforts to influence/buy Congress.
In news that may make our editor cry a little because he has to cover it again, there's a rumor going around that TheCW intends to show the already filmed episodes of The Beautiful Life.

This week one of our biggest editions of Gays of Our Lives ever includes an interview with One Life to Live head writer Ron Carlivati, responsible for the Kyle/Oliver love story that has had daytime talking and made instant stars out of Brett Claywell, who plays Kyle Lewis, and Scott Evans, who plays Oliver Fish. We talk about the creation of the storyline, how the actors felt when they learned about the plot twist and why Kish has became such a sensation.
Plus, we find out what’s next for Llanview’s gays. Where do Oliver and Kyle go from here? Is Kyle’s ex Nick (Nicholas Rodriguez) out of the picture? And what about that baby that Oliver unknowingly fathered? We cover all of that and more in our interview.

File this one under "Thanks for nothing, Shrub." That would be the really bulging file I keep on my desk. So what's the issue?
This week Huffington Post blogger Ryan Grim reported that a new book coming out about President George Bush includes the fact that Bush declined to denounce same-sex marriage in his commencement speech at Furman University in 2008 because he wasn't "...going to tell some gay kid in the audience that he can't get married."
No, he was just going to get elected by demonizing the gay kid, and every other 'mo in the country, by allowing henchman Karl Rove to orchestrate two of the most anti-gay presidential campaigns ever run in the U.S. Two campaigns the fueled a wave of constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage across America.
But, hey, Bush wouldn't actually deliver the bad news to the gay college kid himself because he's such a stand up guy.

Long time no see kids. My bad. We're getting ready to kick off 31 Days of Horror again this year, obviously starting on October 1st. I'm going to use that as my excuse for taking some time away from the column, rather than just admitting I'm lazy. This week we're talking Red Velvet, which has very little to do with the delicious, buttery cake and more to do with quasi-experimental horror. This flick stars Henry Thomas, whose name you probably can't place - he was Elliot in E.T. and is about a weirdo named Aaron who is telling the made up macabre story about how Linda's friends were all killed by a pscyho murderer. But since this is a horror movie, you're probably wondering just how made up that story is. Kills We'll say that there are nine deaths in the film, though with the story telling aspect of it, we...

If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie that shows you what a drug trip looks like from the inside, and has a plot based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, then you’ll very much want to see Gaspar Noé’s incredibly psychedelic, down and (very) dirty Enter The Void.
The storyline is very very cool, but hardly complex, and as everyone in the theatre could guess the ending at least halfway through the movie, I’m not going to really give anything away by telling you the plot is driven by an act of revenge, an almost kinky brother-sister love story, and everything the Tibetans can teach about life after death. I found myself wondering if Tim Leary was really dead or simply outside, looking in. The plot is secondary.

Q: Do you know if any of the contestants on Survivor: Samoa are going to be Glbt? I just checked out their profiles and at least three of the guys list things like "womanizer", "never been rejected", and "a woman's dream." Is CBS trying to overly heteroize the show that has been strategically won by at least two openly gay men (Todd and Hatch)? – Topher, Toronto, Canada
A: There are no gay male contestants that we know of (although it’s always possible someone hasn’t yet come out to the network).
Is CBS trying to “heteroize” the show? Although I love your coining of a new term, I’d strenuously argue that they’re not. In fact, we recently talked with Jeff Probst, and I’m convinced he doesn’t see the show in those terms at all.

With Billy Bob Thornton’s recent trend of starring in piss-poor comedies where he’s nothing but an arrogant and abusive asshole, it’s easy to forget that the man can be an acting giant when he wants to be. Every now and then we get a glimpse of his talent with films like Monster Ball, but one of his most interesting films is by far the 1996 drama Sling Blade. In Sling Blade, Thornton not only proved his acting chops beyond any doubt, but he established himself as an Oscar-worthy screenwriter. If those two things aren’t enough to make you take a second long look at Billy Bob’s career then nothing will. However, for every two steps forward he takes with his writing and acting, his direction of the film suffers from spreading himself too thin.

Seriously, did someone set off a gay bomb at One Life to Live? Hot on the tail of out actor (and local favorite, from what I can tell) Scott Evans stepping up the role of gay character Fish opposite Kyle (Brett Claywell) we're getting casting scoop the legacy soap has just cast another gay actor to play another gay role related to the Kyle/Fish storyline.
Meet Nicholas Rodriguez, who will play Nick (starting August 14th), another gay character that will be involved in the budding gay couple's story.
For more spoilery details (and another pic), continue along below...
(Linda Lenzi/BroadwayWorld.com)
From what we hear, Nick will be dating Kyle, which serves to get Fish jealous enough to realize his love for Kyle and get them together. Nick will be a short-term arc aimed at getting the two long-term players into one another's arms.

Chicago – ABC is still struggling to find the next big hit to stand next to monsters like “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and they decided to give Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic’s “Castle” a shot at hit status, but cancelled several other new shows, including “The Unusuals” and “Cupid”.
ABC announced their fall schedule today and made a few surprise choices, bringing back the increasingly interesting “Castle” and giving another chance to “Better Off Ted” and “True Beauty”.
Perhaps the most surprising move, especially considering the show’s poignant and excellent series finale, has to be the return of “Scrubs,” which will be back for midseason. They also announced 11 new series for fall and midseason.

L.A. Scene is a monthly column that chronicles lesbian nightlife and events of interest in Los Angeles. Sarah Witness, an East Coast transplant and obvious femme, has been navigating the snark infested waters of Hollywood since 2001. Although she's an Nyu trained actress, she prefers sipping vodka and making idle chit-chat at really gay nightclubs.
GLAAD Media Awards
I attended the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles on on April 18. When I told a number of lesbian friends that I would be going to this, rather than lurking typically around West Hollywood on a Saturday night, they told me this was pointless because GLAAD is mostly for guys. Some of my best friends know guys, so I decided to give it a whirl.
And guess what? It was a giant sea of gay. Shocking. Actually, I have never seen so many gay people in one room.

In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004).
From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired, or disappointed us in 2008.
In previous years, the winners have been editorially chosen by the AfterEllen.com staff (note: winners do not necessarily represent any individual staff member's preference). This year, we opened up some of the categories for nominations, posted the finalists, and thousands of you voted. We've designated those categories with this symbol:
We've also included more international people, shows and movies this year, a reflection of the increasing awareness of lesbian and bisexual visibility around the world made possible by the internet.
Now on to the best and worst of...

It’s been a busy year for soaps and dramas featuring gay characters (you should just see the number of shows I have to watch). A lot of it was good, much of it was bad, and some . . . well, that’s the point of this week's survey. We’re looking for your opinions on the year's best and worst in soaps and dramatic shows featuring gay characters. From Best Series to Worst Storyline to Best Couple to Most Shocking Plot Twist, we want to know what you loved and hated in the shows featuring your favorite and not-so-favorite gay characters. The results will be announced in the Dec. 15th edition of “Gays of Our Lives.” And please, if you feel there’s someone we’ve missed, you can write in your own choice!
