Donald Trump is reportedly annoyed with Arizona GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake’s frequent trips to his Mar-a-Lago resort and worries that she will be a liability for his re-election.
Trump is concerned that Lake will also blow the GOP’s chances of gaining a Senate seat in Arizona and drag him down in a critical state he needs to carry to win the presidency.
Melania Trump is also said to be upset with Lake’s frequent presence at Mar-a-Lago.
The Senate race to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Arizona) is one of the most closely watched during the 2024 election, and Lake is expected to face Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona).
One of the problems Lake is facing is undoing the damage of her attack on John McCain’s followers, whom she degraded during her losing 2022 bid. She is also distrusted by GOP higher-ups in her state,...

Republican Arizona Senate Candidate Kari Lake has flipped her position on the state’s 1864 abortion ban – for a second time, stating that it is “unfortunate” that Arizona is not enforcing the law.
On April 9, the Arizona Supreme Court issued a ruling to reinstate the ban, which resulted in instant position changes among Republicans who previously backed it, including Lake.
The Court overturned a 2022 law that permitted abortions up to 15 weeks, clearing the way for an 1864 ban that forbids the procedure except when needed to save the mother’s life.
The state’s highest Court first heard arguments on the case in December 2023 after the Arizona Court of Appeals determined that the two inconsistent abortion bans needed to be in harmony.
In a 4-2 decision, the justices said that the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the federal law that safeguarded abortion rights until viability, meant that there was no longer...

Arizona has officially repealed an 1864 abortion ban that the state Supreme Court revived last month.
Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs signed the repeal on Thursday, a day after the state Senate approved it. “While I’m proud to sign this bill and provide a moment of relief for Arizonans, we still have work to do,” Hobbs said. “Arizona women are still governed by a ban that leaves no exceptions for rape or incest, nor does it account for complications during pregnancy.”

Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake can’t seem to make up her mind. Does she believe that Arizona’s Civil War-era total ban on abortion is a “great law” and that abortion is “the ultimate sin,” as she said on the campaign trail in 2022? Or does she think that every woman should have “choices” when they get pregnant, as she insisted in a recent campaign video?

On Sunday, Republican candidate for the Arizona U.S. senate seat Kari Lake delivered a fiery speech to her supporters in Lake Havasu City. In it, she urged them to prepare for the upcoming 2024 campaign – and “strap on a Glock.”
She addressed the crowd of Arizonans in Mohave County, “We need to send people to Washington, D.C., that the swamp does not want there… And I can think of a couple of people they don’t want there. First on that list is Donald J. Trump; second is Kari Lake.”
Lake highlighted her alignment with Donald Trump, stating she shares his desire to confront the forces that seek to “undermine the American people.” In recognition of the potential backlash she may face, Lake warned her supporters of the challenges that lie ahead in the next six months due to the intense nature of the campaign.

The Justice Department charged 20 people with threatening election workers throughout the United States through its Elections Threats Task Force.
This task force was formed in June 2021 in response to increasing reports of intimidation and threats to election workers following the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump and his allies argued, without evidence, there was widespread fraud during this election.
In addition to the task force’s work leading to these charges, they opened dozens of investigations into other instances since their launch.
During a press conference in Arizona to lay out the sentence for the Ohio resident Joshua Russell for making death threats to an official working in the Arizona secretary of state’s office, Justice Department official John Keller told reporters that 13 of the 20 people charged were convicted.

Missed Thursday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
Principles Are for Off-Years
The comedic fallout from this week’s widely derided Arizona Supreme Court ruling that an 1864 abortion ban can go into effect continued to pelt election-obsessed Republicans on Thursday. With formerly staunch anti-choice GOP politicians ducking and running from the near-universal scorn and anger resulting from such a draconian law reaching all the way back to before women could vote to deprive 2024 women of their bodily autonomy, late-night hosts remained in full dog-pile mode, playing readily available old clips of GOP hopefuls’ past fire-and-brimstone anti-abortion messaging alongside their current, voter-courting “Well, actually…” hypocrisy.
The Daily Show‘s Michael Kosta, playing one such past clip of Arizona Senate candidate and infamous election denier Kari Lake rhapsodizing over the 1864-derived law by its extended bill name (Ars 13-3603), noted,...

On Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court issued a ruling to reinstate a 160-year-old abortion ban, which resulted in immediate changes in stance among Republicans who had previously supported it, such as Senate candidate Kari Lake.
The Court overturned a 2022 law that permitted abortions up to 15 weeks, clearing the way for an 1864 ban that essentially prohibits the procedure except when necessary to save the life of the mother.
The state’s highest Court initially heard arguments on the case in December after the Arizona Court of Appeals determined that the two contradictory abortion bans needed to be “harmonized.”
In a 4-2 decision, the justices stated that the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the federal law safeguarding abortion rights until viability, meant that there was no legal barrier to enforcing the decades-old ban. The Court ruled that the law could be implemented within 14 days, and the parties involved were allowed to raise...

While many Republicans celebrated the Arizona Supreme Court declaring abortion “illegal” in the state on Tuesday, some of the party’s members who could be at risk of losing reelection in the Grand Canyon state opposed the decision — even if it meant changing their previously stated stance on the issue.
The most prominent was Maga U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, who criticized the law upheld by the state Supreme Court despite once calling it “great.” Lake also commended presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s remarks on abortion earlier this week,...

Comedian Roseanne Barr was attacked on social media for ranting about Democratic donors at a GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake’s Arizona campaign fundraiser.
Barr’s rant took place at Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump’s property in Florida, where she served as a “special guest comedian” for the event.
Barr released a statement ahead of the event.
“On my way to Mar-a-Lago to help support the great @KariLake,” she wrote on X. “We must try to vote our way out of this for at least one last year…. and then if that doesn’t work #1776.”
The reference to 1776 caused some critics to claim that she was inciting violence.
A video of her at the event made it to X, showing her telling American college students that they should drop out.
“How’re you doing?” the comedian said while slurring her words and holding a glass of white wine in her hands.

Attorneys representing Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake will not contest the defamation case filed against her.
The lawsuit, initiated by Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer last year, accuses Lake defamed him after her defeat in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race, where she refused to concede and made allegations of election fraud.
The lawsuit alleges that Lake engaged in a systematic campaign to spread falsehoods about Richer’s actions as recorder, which led to harassment and numerous threats to his life. Among the unfounded claims made by Lake were accusations that Richer tampered with ballot boxes, injected 300,000 invalid votes and deliberately obfuscated the voting process.
In a recent court filing, Lake’s legal team did not contest the allegations put forth by Richer and instead requested an expedited hearing to determine the appropriate damages.

Nikki Haley said that it is up to Donald Trump to “earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support” his presidential bid.
In brief remarks in which she announced that she is suspending her presidential bid, Haley said that “at its best, politics is about bringing people into your cause, not turning them away, and our conservative cause badly needs more people.”
“This is now his time for choosing,” she said.
Trump has previously berated Haley for staying in the race, with his campaign calling her “birdbrain” and the former president mocking her husband, Michael, for being absent on the campaign trail. He’s been serving in the military on a deployment in Africa.
Trump also has threatened Haley’s supporters, writing in January that “Anybody that makes a ‘Contribution’ to Birdbrain, from this moment forth, will be permanently barred from the Maga camp.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-az) said that she won’t run for reelection to the Senate.
“Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year,” Sinema said in a video statement posted on her X/Twitter account today.
“Over my career, I have shown how government can work for everyday people,” she added, citing a host of bipartisan legislation.
She said that despite all of those accomplishments, “Americans still choose to retreat farther to their partisan corners. These solutions are considered failures, either because they are too much or not nearly enough. It’s all or nothing. The outcome, less important than beating the other guy.”
Sinema left the Democratic party at the end of 2022 and switched her affiliation to independent, as she faced a potential primary challenge. But she had withheld announcing her plans until now.

Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake recently headlined a campaign fundraiser hosted by Caryn Borland and Michael Borland, two supporters of the far-right political conspiracy theory QAnon.
On February 2, Lake attended this fundraiser with Caryn and Michael, which was held at their mansion in Prescott, Arizona.
Lake has been a supporter of Donald Trump‘s third presidential bid. She campaigned for him in Iowa before the caucuses took place. Some pundits even saw her as a potential vice president choice for Trump.
She launched her Arizona Senate bid in October 2023 but ended the year with a relatively small amount of money in the bank.
Lake raised $2 million in the roughly 11 weeks after having entered the race, but she immediately spent almost half that amount, meaning that she started 2024 with a little more than $1 million in the bank, as well as $308,000 in debt.

In a recent ruling by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Jay Adleman, Kari Lake, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor, has been tasked with substantiating the allegations she made against Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer in order to avoid being found guilty of defamation.
Judge Adleman emphasized that the claims Lake made that accused Richer of election sabotage were not mere rhetorical hyperbole, as argued by her lawyers.
Instead, he stated that these assertions could be considered as either true or false and thus fall under the category of actionable assertions of fact under Arizona law. Consequently, Lake is now obligated to present evidence in court supporting her accusations.
Adleman noted that Richer’s legal team has presented sufficient allegations to establish a potential case of “actual malice” against Lake, her campaign, and the Save Arizona Fund, which has been used to raise funds.

The conservative news streaming service Newsmax+ launched at the beginning of November. At the end of that month, the service had already accrued 150,000 subscribers. The figure is impressive for a streamer with a niche audience and a narrow selection of content. How is Newsmax+ Doing?
When Newsmax+ first launched earlier this month, it was undoubtedly a gamble for Newsmax. After all, the channel’s content had been streaming on a free ad-supported TV (Fast) channel on platforms like Roku and YouTube, so it was no guarantee that...

The hard-right news channel now has its own subscription streaming platform, with prices starting at $4.99 per month.
The removal of Newsmax from Directv earlier this year drew sharp protests from ultra-conservative viewers of the channel, who were quick to cry censorship at its withdrawal. Directv insisted there was no political motivation behind the removal, and eventually a new carriage deal brought the channel back to airwaves for Directv customers.
Carriage disputes are only becoming more common as cable and satellite lose customers, however. To help allay audience anxiety that the channel may be pulled from other providers in the future, Newsmax has launched its own direct-to-consumer (Dtc) service, imaginatively named Newsmax+, which is available now.

The one major political figure who spent more time than any other in the GOP debate Spin Room wasn’t even a Republican: California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Speaking for Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, Newsom sparred with Sean Hannity on Fox News’ Hannity, spoke with CNN’s Dana Bash and chatted with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. He answered questions about his own presidential ambitions, defended the state of California, praised the recent WGA-amptp agreement and even weighed in the Travis Kelce-Taylor Swift situation. “It was the XFL, the Jv team,” Newsom said of the seven candidates who participated in the event.
Some of the actual candidates who appeared onstage did venture into the spin room for lengthy periods, including Vivek Ramaswamy, Tim Scott, Mike Pence and Doug Burghum, but Newsom also did a pre-debate round of Spin Room interviews to a swarm of reporters and camera crews.

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kari Lake have been locked in what one source close to Donald Trump describes to Rolling Stone as a “death race” to become his 2024 vice presidential pick.
In public, the far-right congresswoman from Georgia and the failed Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate are happy to present an image of calm unity in their cause to return Trump to the White House. But behind the scenes, the two view one another with intense distrust and disdain, each seeing the other as direct competition for Trump’s political affections,...

Update: Donald Trump confirmed that he sat down with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for an interview that will post at the exact time as the Republican presidential debate.
Trump, who is skipping the debate, wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, “My Interview With Tucker Carlson Will Be Aired Tonight At 9:00 P.M. “Sparks Will Fly.” Enjoy!”
His absence likely will be brought up at the debate, especially since Chris Christie will be on stage. The former New Jersey governor has staked much of his campaign on criticizing Trump.
Trump’s decision to counter program with the interview with Carlson, who was dropped from the Fox News lineup in April, is an obvious dig at the network. His presence at the debate would likely have meant higher ratings, although Fox News is still expected to get a viewership bump due to the fact that it will...

Joe Scarborough has some advice for Republicans running for president: stop trying to be Donald Trump. According to the MSNBC host, the strategy he used to win in 2016 is “never gonna work again.”
Scarborough’s advice came on Friday’s episode of “Morning Joe,” as he and his colleagues discussed someone who “really kind of modeled herself after the Trump blueprint,” Kari Lake. The former Arizona gubernatorial candidate — who, like Trump, lost her election and then baselessly claimed for months that the election rigged and she actually did win — is facing a new lawsuit in Maricopa County for defamation of an election official.
In discussing Lake, Scarborough noted that just about everyone he ever talked to about her during campaign season thought she was incredibly skilled, and added that “if she was a mainstream Republican,” she could’ve won. So he offered some guidance to others.

Newsmax’s right-wing panel show “The Right Squad” was reduced to an incomprehensible screaming match Friday during a debate over the killing of Jordan Neely.
Neely, a homeless street artist, was choked to death by U.S. Marine veteran Daniel Penny on a New York subway earlier this month after the former began shouting he was hungry, thirsty and had little to live for. Neely had allegedly been acting erratically prior to Penny’s chokehold, but had not attacked anyone, a witness who recorded the incident told CNN. Neely’s death was ruled a homicide, and Penny has been charged with second-degree manslaughter for the fatal choke.
Newsmax host Jenn Pellegrino asked the panel if these charges marked “the beginning of the end of the Good Samaritan,” which sparked a lively shouting duel amongst the pundits.

“Saturday Night Live” scene-stealer Cecily Strong had viewers reaching for the tissues during the Season 48 Christmas episode, as she bid adieu to Studio 8H after 11 long years (watch above). She’s already been nominated twice at the Emmy Awards in Best Comedy Supporting Actress (2020 and ’21) for her work on NBC’s late night sketch comedy series, so a third and final bid in the supporting category would be the cherry on top of her celebrated tenure. Of course, if “SNL” is feeling strategic, it could choose to submit her as a guest star instead.
There is a quirky Emmy rule that declares, “Only performers appearing in less than 50% of the eligible episodes can submit in the Guest Performer categories.” Strong missed the first three outings of “Saturday Night Live” due to a stage play in Los Angeles, and the December 17 broadcast was her last ever, so she only appeared in six total episodes this year.

Twice-impeached former president Donald Trump is reportedly considering having a female running mate for his 2024 presidential bid, and “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon is pretty sure he knows just how that woman will be chosen.
During his monologue on Tuesday night, Fallon cited a report from Axios earlier in the day, which asserted that Trump is “strongly considering” picking a woman to be his VP this time around, as part of a concerted effort to win the votes of suburban women.
“Of course, since it’s Trump, he’ll make the decision after holding a ‘Miss Vice President’ pageant,” Fallon joked.

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry has withdrawn his lawsuit against his ex-bandmates over the trademarks to 20 of the group’s biggest songs.
In Sept. 2022, Perry, who permanently exited the band in 1998, filed legal papers to prevent Freedom Jn LLC — a company headed by Journey’s Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain which holds the Journey trademarks — from using those trademarks on apparel and other merchandise.
Perry claimed that he, Cain and Schon had an agreement that required unanimous consent for any business decision related to the trademarks and that he had not authorized said consent.

The night before the election, betting markets gave Hobbs, the Democrat, just a 20 percent chance of winning. Skepticism about her odds hinged on the fact that she had declined to debate Lake. Wixen Music Publishing, the music publisher for Tom Petty, hit Kari Lake with a Cease and Desist letter on Friday over her use of Petty’s hit song “I Won’t Back Down.” The letter, obtained by Rolling Stone, comes after the Republican Arizona gubernatorial candidate who lost to Katie Hobbs this week faced backlash from Petty’s estate for using the track.
As Lake’s use of Petty’s song suggests, she is currently refusing to concede the governor’s race, instead insinuating that voter fraud cost her the election.
