EuiJeong Hong’s South Korean thriller Voice Of Silence has won the 25th anniversary edition Fantasia International Film Festival’s Cheval Noir award for best film.
Hong’s film follows a mute low-level gangster tasked with taking charge of an 11-year-old kidnapped girl from a wealthy family. The jury described Voice Of Silence as “impossible to pin down, and truly idiosyncratic. Put simply, it’s unlike anything we’d seen before”.

Watching Pascal-Alex Vincent's summation of Kon Satoshi's work and life and untimely death made me more than a little bit sad. Not because the film is a poor tribute or account of one of the leading lights of Japanese filmmaking, it certainly is not. Rather, it has now been over a decade since the auteur-animator-director and simply, artist, died of Cancer. Kon left behind an unfinished feature, The Dreaming Machine, as well as a near perfect legacy of daring, complex and varied films, a TV series, a short film, and several Manga. When we think of the term “auteur” or “auteur theory” we usually include directors such as Alfred Hitchcock or Stanley Kubrick given the diversity in their work, the amount of creative control they had and the recurring themes in their features. Especially the latter is interesting because Kubrick has managed to leave his footprint in the world of film, even though he has only produced a small number of films, in comparison to Hitchcock that is. Given this definition, director Satoshi Kon, although he helmed even a smaller number of features, should deserve the title as well, especially since features like “Paprika” or “Perfect Blue” are considered masterpieces of the genre and remain influential sources for filmmakers all over the world. Carlotta Films has released the first official trailer for a documentary film titled Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist, a profile of the acclaimed Japanese filmmaker and artist and manga creator Satoshi Kon. This doc is premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival this month premiering in the Cannes Classics retrospective section, partially because it's by a French filmmaker named Pascal-Alex Vincent who has a deep love and appreciation for Japanese culture. Satoshi Kon passed away suddenly in 2010 at the rather young age of 46. He is best known for his acclaimed anime films: Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), and Paprika (2006). This documentary is a "fascinating tribute to the man who changed the face of animated cinema, with exclusive interviews [with] Mamoru Hosoda, Darren Aronofsky, Jérémy Clapin, and Mamoru Oshii." Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival got an early 25th birthday present in the form of James Gunn’s “Suicide Squad,” which will receive a special screening on Aug. 4, the day before Fantasia officially kicks off with the world premiere of Julien Knafo’s zombie thriller “Brain Freeze.” Gunn is a long-time friend of the fest, having first attended in 1997 before later returning for the Canadian premiere of his Marvel blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Fantasia also unveiled its second wave of features participating at this year’s festival, joining a raft of titles announced in May, and will announce the rest of its slate in late July along with details on several virtual events and this year’s juries.

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for its 2021 Cannes Classics section. Made up of a selection of restored prints, the roster also includes new documentaries that explore the history of cinema. Among the offerings is Mark Cousins’ pre-opening doc, The Storms Of Jeremy Thomas, which covers a yearly drive with the British producer from London to Cannes. French director Pascal-Alex Vincent has won much praise for this debut feature, a road movie about twin 18-year-olds hitch-hiking across France to attend the funeral of their mother. The boys are played by Victor and Alexandre Carril, twins who are eerily alike. They have moody, high-cheekboned presence; the tensions between the two are plausible and the movie always looks good with an inspired comic-book animated opening sequence, but there is something preposterous about the leads and their smouldering emotions.

- Sticking to their usual habit of importing the Sundance film festival to the east coast side, the New Directors/New Films 2009 edition will be bookmarked by opening film selection Amreeka from first time filmmaker Cherien Dabis and ending it off with the impressive sophomore feature from Lee Daniels. To qualify, projects must be budgeted at 1 million euros-10 million euros ($1.3 million-$13 million) and have 30% of their financing in place.
Now in its sixth year, Berlin's Co-Production Market has been impressive in getting projects off the ground. Last year, some 17 projects co-financed with the help of the market were released theatrically.

London -- In a country that loves a movie with political content, Oliver Stone's "W." is sure to ignite healthy debate when today's Italian premiere kicks off the nine-day Turin Film Festival.
The timing certainly couldn't be better, coming little more than two weeks after a U.S. presidential election that still has Europe buzzing.
But Barack Obama's election to the White House was arguably less surprising -- and certainly less controversial -- than this year's lineup, which is completely void of Italian films.
Arguably the country's third most prominent film festival, after Venice and Rome, the Northern Italian film jamboree will come to a close with "The Edge of Love," directed by John Maybury.
Under the watchful eye of filmmaker Nanni Moretti, now in his second year as artistic director, the festival has no Italian films because, according to Moretti, there simply weren't any titles that were up to snuff.
