As Election Day begins to unfold across the United States, TV news channels in Europe and media around the world are girding for a long night ahead. The final heat between incumbent Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden might or might not be decided when Europe wakes up on Wednesday — Germany’s Der Spiegel is currently leading with the headline “Why There Could Be No Winner On Election Evening” — but teams are at the ready, and some programmers have gotten creative on non-news fare.
Sporadic coverage began on international cable channels throughout the day today, though many European outlets were also focused on Monday night’s terrorist shooting spree that left four dead in Vienna. Coronavirus, a main topic of the U.S. presidential election, remains a key talking point, particularly in France where a 9 p.m. curfew, to go along with the ongoing lockdown, has been evoked for Paris.

Labour's Chuka Umunna has stormed out of an interview with Sky News.
The shadow business secretary and MP for Streatham clashed with host Dermot Murnaghan over a letter, which he had not read, sent out to UK mosques by communities secretary Eric Pickles.
He was asked if he believed the letter - which urged Muslim leaders to attempt to prevent young British Muslims from becoming radicalised - to be patronising.
When pushed to give an opinion, he replied: "I think you are being a bit ridiculous right now, I was asked to come and speak about David Cameron's speech on the economy and what was happening around the labour market.
"Nobody told me that I was going to come on this programme and be asked to agree whether I thought the Government was patronising Muslim people and Muslim leaders."
He added: "I'm not just going to speak off piste without actually having read a letter.

BBC TV boss Danny Cohen has said that Jeremy Clarkson is not "untouchable".
Cohen explained that Clarkson's use of the racially-offensive word 'slope' in a Top Gear episode, and his alleged mumbling of 'n****r' while filming the show, would have an "impact" on the BBC Two series.
Speaking at today's (August 21) Edinburgh International Television Festival (via Radio Times), Cohen said that while he does not believe Clarkson has done anything wrong, some of the language he used was unacceptable.
Cohen said: "I was very clear in public and in private that I was incredibly unhappy with his language.
"I have made that extremely clear and Jeremy knows that that will impact on the way the show is thought about in the future.
"People have loads of views on Jeremy Clarkson. There are people who think that me being so angry about it is an over-reaction. I don't think it is an over-reaction.

Flies can be a nuisance at the best of times, let alone when you're trying to talk live on television.
Sky News' political editor Adam Boulton was trying to deliver important details about the government cabinet reshuffle, when a fly decided to die for a share of the limelight.
Presenter Dermot Murnaghan urgently asked his colleague if he needed a break, as he starts to choke up and pull bizarre facial expressions.
"No I'm fine, I swallowed a fly but I've recovered now," Boulton replies while pulling at his tie and attempting to move on from the subject.
This isn't the first on-air spat for the outgoing editor. In 2010, he clashed with Tony Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell. Watch the moment below:...

Elton John would like those who oppose same-sex marriage for so-called religious reasons to have another look at their New Testament.
"The church hierarchy, the traditionalists, might be up in arms about it but times have changed," the 67-year-old singer recently told Sky News' Dermot Murnaghan.
"If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the church should be about."
John and longtime partner David Furnish have two sons together and are planning to marry next year in London, now that gay marriage is legal in England.

The BBC has defended Eggheads star Barry Simmons over his appearance on a Radio 4 quiz.
Simmons is a regular 'Egghead' on the BBC Two gameshow, but has also reached the final of Brain of Britain.
The broadcaster has received five complaints from viewers about Simmons's appearance in the radio programme's semi-final, reports The Sunday Telegraph.
A BBC statement said: "There is no rule banning Eggheads from appearing on Brain of Britain - the only rule is that former champions are not allowed to return.
"Brain of Britain is a very unpredictable quiz and it is quite possible a well-known quizzer like Barry could be beaten."
Simmons has previously won £64,000 on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and has also reached the semi-final of Mastermind and the 2009 Brain of Britain final.
Jeremy Vine and Dermot Murnaghan host Eggheads, which sees a team of five contestants taking on a team made up of quiz show champions.

I often quote Tom Stoppard's line about the "casual cruelty" of newspapers. Sometimes though, it is far from casual as Dermot Murnaghan and Andrew Marr will testify today.
They have suffered the embarrassment of being pictured - in the Sunday Mirror and The People - kissing women who are not their wives. And the Daily Mail's website has followed up by publishing both sets of pictures too. (No, I'm not going to link to any of it).
Why have the pair been papped? Here's the public interest defence. These men, by virtue of appearing on television, are role models. They are married. According to the editors' code of practice, the public interest is served by "preventing the public from being misled by an action or statement of an individual or organisation."
So Murnaghan and Marr - both of them journalists, incidentally - are "guilty" of misleading the public. Case proved.

Boxing legend Mike Tyson faced his toughest opponent in years during a U.K. interview, after a news anchor kept pushing the former fighter to answer a string of difficult questions.
The ex heavyweight champion was quizzed by Sky News journalist Dermot Murnaghan as part of an interview to promote the famous fighter's upcoming meet-and-greet tour of Britain.
And Tyson, who hasn't been in the ring for almost five years, was forced to duck and dodge a series of provocative questions about converting to Islam and his thoughts on America voting in its first black president.
But things took a particularly nasty turn when Murnaghan asked Tyson about his violent past, reminding the fighter of how he once claimed he wanted to punch an opponent's nose "into his brain".
The reporter pushed, "I want to see how much you've changed, and whether you're a different person."
To which a blatantly angry Tyson replied, "I don't know if I'm a different person. Change comes in time."
He added, "You're starting to irritate me now... I guess I did change because I'm not assailing you!"
The situation nearly got out of control as Tyson's tour manager, Jimmy Clyne, tried to storm the set to pull the interview - but was stopped by another reporter, and told Murnaghan would be able to control the heated encounter.
It's not the first grilling Tyson has faced in recent weeks - last month, the ex-boxer sat down with Oprah Winfrey in America to address his violent past and to publicly apologise for biting off a piece of opponent Evander Holyfield's ear during one high-profile fight.
