Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) declared that every member of Congress should be “ashamed” of the 118th Congress.
“Every one of us should be ashamed of what we’re, what we’re living through now in the 118th Congress,” the West Virginia senator told CNN in an interview. “Every Congress up until this 118th Congress has basically produced about 500 bills that we could work on and agree on and passed some form of legislation—500 to 520. We’ve only passed 69 bills.”
“What I’m really concerned about is if we lose the filibuster, you won’t create any new moderates,” Manchin added. “You will not have a middle at all. It will be swinging from the left and the right. That’s not who America is. That probably scares me more than anything.”
Former Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) agreed with Manchin’s assessment. “In the sense that Congress isn’t doing much legislating,...

Donald Trump appeared at a rally hosted by super Pac Buckeye Values in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday supporting Bernie Moreno, the Senate candidate vying for the GOP primary who Trump endorsed.
Moreno is competing with state Senator Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank Larose in the Republican primary, the winner of which will go head-to-head against Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown. Brown is one of the two Democrats (the other is Montana Democrat Jon Tester) running for reelection in red states. The two races will be pivotal in determining which party controls the Senate.

On Friday, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) said he would not run for president as a third-party candidate.
“I will not be seeking a third-party run. I will not be involved in a presidential run,” Manchin told an audience at West Virginia University.
It was a surprising announcement given that just a day before, he suggested that he might launch a third-party presidential campaign and floated the name of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) as a potential running mate.
At a breakfast event hosted by the City Club of Cleveland as part of his nationwide “listening tour,” Manchin endorsed the idea of Romney as a hypothetical running mate. He also mentioned he had considered former Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) for the V.P. position.
At the event, Manchin openly criticized President Joe Biden on various issues and emphasized his concerns about the administration’s policies. Despite the speculation around his potential presidential bid,...

Update: The Senate passed a bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage rights at the federal level, drawing bipartisan support for legislation likely to clear Congress and be signed by President Joe Biden.
The Supreme Court advanced marriage equality in several landmark decisions over the past 55 years, but the court’s decision in June to reverse Roe vs. Wade has raised fears that other precedents may also be in jeopardy.
“The first people I will call when this bill passes is my daughter and her wife,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the floor of the Senate before the final vote. After members clapped when the final roll call was announced, Schumer said, “What a great day.”
The bill, the Respect for Marriage Act, cleared the Senate 61-36, with Democrats joined by 12 Republicans in support. The GOP members included Roy Blunt of Missouri, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia,...

“Hillbilly Elegy” director Ron Howard admits he was “surprised” by J.D. Vance’s embrace of Donald Trump and the GOP’s conservative ideology during his recent successful campaign for Ohio senator.
“To be honest, I was surprised,” Howard told Variety at the Academy’s Governors Awards Saturday in Los Angeles. “When I was getting to know J.D., we didn’t talk politics because I wasn’t interested in that about his life. I was interested in his childhood and navigating the particulars of his family and his culture so that’s what we focused on in our conversation. To me, he struck me as a very moderate center-right kind of guy.”
Howard directed the film adaptation of Vance’s bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” released as a Netflix film in 2020. Vance’s book chronicled his family’s struggles with poverty and...

Hillbilly Elegy author J.D. Vance defeated Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan for an open U.S. Senate seat in Ohio on Tuesday in a blow to Democrats who viewed it as one of their best chances nationally to flip a seat.
Vance, 38, a venture capitalist and newcomer to politics, benefited from a last-minute push by Donald Trump. The former Republican president had endorsed Vance in a crowded, ugly Republican primary — despite Vance having once declared himself a “never-Trumper” — and then rallied for him twice, most recently on election eve.
Vance and Trump successfully linked Ryan to the national economic climate he blamed on President Joe Biden, while Ryan failed to make stick his narrative that Vance’s Ivy League education and time in the San Francisco tech industry meant he was out of touch with Ohio values.

Lima, Oh. — A typical Democrat wouldn’t be here.
It’s the final stretch of his Senate race, and Tim Ryan is spending one of the campaign’s last Saturdays in Allen County, where Trump won by a mammoth 40 points two years ago. Most in his party believe the white working-class voters here have been permanently lost to the GOP. But Ryan made his way to this cavernous union hall in northwest Ohio because he hasn’t given up.
On stage, the 10-term congressman stood before a crowd of just a few dozen.

U.S. lawmakers have had TikTok in their sights for years now, but when members of Congress finally got a chance to question one of the app’s top executives, they didn’t get the answers they were looking for. TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas was one of several tech bigwigs probed by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on September 14, and she repeatedly insisted that her company is not sharing U.S. user data with the Chinese government.
Pappas was joined by representatives from YouTube, Meta, and Twitter, all of whom were called to testify on Capital Hill. The committee subjected all of the execs to questions about privacy, security, and foreign policy concerns, but Pappas’ testimony provided the hearing’s most memorable moments.

Republican and Democratic Senators have signed onto a tentative agreement for gun reform legislation in the wake of the shooting at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school.
The proposed deal for bipartisan reform, a group of senators announced Sunday, includes enhanced background checks for buyers ages 18-21 as well as funding for mental health treatment and school security. The deal is a result of negotiations between Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas). Ten Republican senators — the number Democrats would need to overcome a filibuster — have signed on.

What a difference six years can make.
When J.D. Vance’s memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” was released in 2016, the story seemed like fitting material for famously wholesome director Ron Howard to adapt. The book told an inspirational story of Vance’s journey from a poverty-stricken childhood in rural Ohio to attending Yale. It was an only-in-America story that briefly made Vance the toast of some in liberal America, though plenty of critics cited the book for dangerous rhetoric and misguided conclusions.
After the book’s success (following Donald Trump’s presidential election in 2016), Howard helmed a 2020 Netflix film starring Gabriel Basso as Vance. The movie received mixed-to-negative reviews.
Recently, Vance has cultivated an even more contentious public persona. The author and venture capitalist is currently running as a Republican for the Senate seat being vacated by Ohio Senator Rob Portman, and he has embraced a set of controversial positions, even by Republican standards.

Delaware, Ohio — The sun was setting behind Donald Trump, a blazing smear of bronze across the sky, piercing through the ethereal wisps of hair on his head and lighting them in brilliant gold. President Joe Biden celebrated his biggest legislative accomplishment with a large-scale signing ceremony at the South Lawn of the White House, as he promised to promote $1.2 trillion legislation as an example of his administration’s ability to get things done.
The event on a chilly November day drew lawmakers, governors and mayors from both parties, but it also created a bit of a split screen moment for cable news, given the ongoing trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. CNN and MSNBC went to Biden’s remarks, but Fox News stayed with the trial, featuring the infrastructure signing in a small box.
NBC News and ABC News did special broadcast reports.
“Too often in Washington, the reason we don’t get things done is because we insist on getting everything we want,” Biden said before about 800 people. “With this law, we focused on getting things done.”

2Nd Update, 4:18 Pm: The Senate voted Wednesday to move forward with a key priority for Joe Biden — a massive bipartisan infrastructure package.
Even with a procedural vote of 67-32, the bill faces not just final approval in the Senate but buy-in from the House. That’s where progressives want their deal tied to a concurrent move to pass a $3.5 trillion budget package that would expand Medicare, clean energy and child care. After the Senate vote, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that he would move to bring that budget resolution to the floor.
“My goal,” he said, “remains to pass both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and a budget resolution during this work period. Both. It might take some long nights. It might lead into our weekends. But we are going to get the job done, and we are on track.”

Don Lemon will moderate the one-hour event on July 21, which starts at 8 Pm Et.
This will be Biden’s second CNN town hall since taking office, having done one in February that was moderated by Anderson Cooper. That took place in Milwaukee, and drew 3.5 million viewers, topping Fox News’ Hannity and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show. This time, the town hall will be going up against Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight and MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes.
Among the memorable moments from the last event: Biden playing into exhaustion over the Trump years. “For four years all that’s been in the news is Trump. The next four years, I want to make sure all the news is the American people.”

Updated, with more details and polls: Senate Republicans on Friday blocked an effort to form a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection, despite pleas from the family of a police officer who died after the riot.
The Senate voted 54-35 to move forward on debate on the bill, short of the 60 needed to overcome a filibuster threat. Six Republicans voted for the commission: Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Bill Cassidy, Ben Sasse and Rob Portman. Nine Republicans and two Democrats did not vote.
“Senate Republicans chose to defend the big lie because they believe anything that could upset Donald Trump could hurt them politically,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said after the vote.
The defeat was expected, as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declared his opposition and his view that the commission would be too partisan. Yet the commission as proposed would have included an equal number of Democrats and Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sat at his desk, rarely if ever distracted from the case being laid out against Donald Trump by House impeachment managers this week.
That was certainly not the case with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-sc), who at one point tapped a pencil on his desk, and at another fidgeted his fingers. On Thursday, he left the chamber to go to the cloak room for blocks of time.
During the trial, the Senate cameras are fixed on the raised rostrum and whoever is speaking at that moment; the dozen or so reporters in the chamber, however, are fixated on the movements and reactions of the senators themselves.

Saturday will mark one year since we’ve been seeing Americans die from Covid-19, and in January of this year alone, the disease killed 96,377 people in this country — more than two-and-one-half times the number of lives it claimed just two months prior.
The escalation in fatalities is apparently a cue to Republicans to go on the cheap. Ten of their Senators, in defiance of the other 40 to at least perform an interest in governance, met with President Biden and Vice President Harris Monday to discuss their counteroffer Covid-19 aid package.

“I’ve had a change of heart based on a personal experience,” said Senator Rob Portman in 2013 when announcing that his own son coming out inspired a shift in his stance towards marriage equality. For the previous Congress, the Senator received a 0 from the Human Rights Campaign’s scorecard for supporting LGBTQ rights in Congress. Perhaps this is an extreme example, but it points to a larger issue. Personal exposure to marginalized communities can help humanize them, but this acceptance is not sufficient to dismantle the systems of oppression and discrimination holding them down.

The Senate on Thursday voted in favor of a resolution to “terminate” President Trump’s national emergency declaration. The vote marks a stunning bipartisan rebuke of the president, who last month used his executive privilege to circumvent Congress and fund the construction of a wall along the southern border. Though the Gop holds a 53-47 advantage over Democrats in the Senate, the measure passed by a vote of 59-41, with 12 members of Trump’s own party voting against him.

The world may never know the full extent of President Trump’s relationship with Vladimir Putin. Their summit in Helsinki led many to believe the president is in some way compromised by his Russian counterpart, and Trump has repeatedly stumbled while trying to explain his submissive performance during Monday’s press conference, walking back his comments on Tuesday, then walking-back the walk-back Wednesday morning. His latest position is that he does indeed believe Russia interfered in the 2016 election, for which he holds Putin personally responsible, albeit indirectly. “Well, I would,...

A bipartisan senate group introduced new legislation to reform the processes by which sexual harassment investigations involving members of Congress are conducted. The Congressional Harassment Reform Act — backed by 20 senators both Republican and Democrat — would change the reporting process for victims, end the process’s strict secrecy rules and require lawmakers to pay settlements out of their own pocket rather than taxpayer money. The bill was supported by U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-ny), Ted Cruz (R-tx), Joni Ernst (R-ia), Dianne Feinstein (D-ca), Lisa Murkowski (R-ak), Lindsey Graham (R-sc), John Cornyn (R-tx), Claire McCaskill (D-mo), Jeanne Shaheen (D-nh), Rob Portman...

President Donald Trump has taken heat in recent days for nominating Brett Talley to a lifetime federal judgeship at the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. Talley, a former speechwriter for Gop Senator Rob Portman who has never tried a case, was given a rare “unqualified” rating by the American Bar Association. In fact, a review of his life’s work suggests he might have a more promising future in horror writing. The former speechwriter has published several spooky novels over the years, including the modestly acclaimed H.P. Lovecraft inspired work, “That Which Should Not Be.

Some Republican senators are not happy with the new health care bill that passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.
While President Donald Trump sees the bill, which passed with a 217-213 vote, as a major legislative victory, the Senate has yet to formally consider the bill. It’s already facing backlash there, as many senators do not appear to be on board with major aspects of the proposed legislation.
Senate Sen. Rob Portman (R-oh) said in a statement that he supports repealing and replacing the Affordable Health Care Act, but does not support the House bill that was passed.

For the first time in his presidency, Donald Trump is facing significant criticism from Republican officials and conservative groups who are rattled by his ban on immigrants and refugees from Muslim-majority nations, questioning his domestic policy agenda and worrying about what steps the New York billionaire might take next in the name of nationalism.
By Sunday evening, more than a dozen Gop members of Congress had spoken out against Trump’s executive order on immigration. Among them were an array of the party’s most influential figures. The top Republican in the Senate,...

Vice President Joe Biden was in full “Uncle Joe” mode for his final swearing-in of new and re-elected senators on Tuesday.
Compliments, “dad jokes” and baby kisses (and snubs!) abounded as Biden held ceremonial swearing-ins for all Senate members of the new 115th Congress inside the old Senate chamber at the Capitol.
Here are some of Biden’s best lines of the day:
To Sen. Chuck Schumer’s mother, after she told Biden how proud she was of her son: “I don’t think he knows how to do anything else.” To Schumer’s daughter, who greeted the vice president...

Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show, – but not necessarily for the reason you'd suspect.
The 53-year-old paid a visit to his old Comedy Central stomping ground on Monday to bring attention to an issue he said he cares about very deeply.
Donning a gray T-shirt and his ever-growing scruffy beard, Stewart blasted Congress for not automatically renewing the Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act, a now-expired bill providing healthcare to first responders who worked at the site of the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Four months after leaving The Daily Show, former host Jon Stewart made a surprise appearance on the program. "Shit, are you here to take the show back? I heard about this in American TV," Trevor Noah asked. Instead, Stewart used his appearance as a podium to convince Congress to pass the Zadroga Reauthorization Act, which gives permanent health care to 9/11 first responders.
"It's soon going to be out of money," Stewart said. "These first responders, many sick with cancers and pulmonary disease, have had to travel at their own expense to Washington,...

The power of personal experience to change Republican minds about political issues was highlighted, recently, when Sen. Rob Portman announced his two-year conversion to acceptance of marriage equality following his son's coming out. On Monday's Martin Bashir program, host Martin Bashir wondered if such a personal experience were the only way to get Republicans to drop their threat to block a vote on the gun regulations that Newtown families are begging them to vote on. Sadly, fairly recent history has already provided us with an answer to that question.

If you're as unimpressed as I am with Senator Rob Portman (R-oh) late-to-the-party, two-years-in-the-making, only-because-his-son-is-gay "support" for gay marriage, have I got a Republican with a gay son for you. While Portman is breaking his own arm patting himself on the back for finally recognizing that Lgbt people are full human beings, Rep. Matt Salmon (R-az) is busy telling his gay son to take his marriage equality and shove it, but Salmon, at least, seems to recognize that his position, and his party's, is the last lizard-brained vestige of soon-to-be-extinct social Neanderthals.

A week after the Republican Senator Rob Portman, a one-time sponsor of the Defense of Marriage Act, announced his support of gay marriage, another prominent conservative unveiled a similarly ground-shifting -- if slightly more modest -- reversal. Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, occasioned by the Supreme Court's high profile hearings on marriage equality, said on his show Tuesday night that he was more convinced by arguments for equality than those against. Story: Supreme Court's Gay Marriage Hearing: What Hollywood is Saying "The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals," the host admitted. "That's where the compelling argument is.

Was Wednesday’s big Gop event a convention or a roast? Judging purely from the night’s speeches, it was often hard to tell. Though Jack Donaghy ex Condoleezza Rice and New Mexico governor Susana Martinez played it straight with poignant, heartfelt addresses, fellow Republicans like Mike Huckabee and especially Tim Pawlenty could easily use their speeches as Last Comic Standing audition material. Don’t believe me? Here’s a sampling of Day 2′s most noteworthy zingers:

At the beginning of a four-day, four-state bus tour starting in Norfolk, Virginia, Mitt Romney has announced 42-year-old Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate.
The Boston Herald reports that Ryan said during the announcement, “Mitt and Ann, I am deeply honored and excited to join you as your running mate." He continued, "America is on the wrong track, but Mitt Romney and I will take the right steps in the right time to get us back on the right track."
In the past few months, many thought Romney would go with more moderate choices like Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, or former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. However many believe Ryan, who is the chairman of the House Budget Committee, is a bold choice due to his views on budget and changing government spending.
