[This story contains spoilers for Echo.]
There are certain television shows that people within the entertainment industry all watch and admire, and one of those shows was Better Call Saul, the celebrated prequel-sequel to the almighty Breaking Bad. The number of influential filmmakers who watched Saul is at least a mile long (Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro, Darren Aronofsky to name a few), and the brass at Marvel Studios are all included in that group. So it was hardly a surprise when Marvel sought out Saul writer-producer Marion Dayre to lead the writers’ room of Echo, a mature miniseries that’s centered on Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox), who was first introduced as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) deaf enforcer on Hawkeye (2021).
Under the tutelage of Saul co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Dayre became a two-time WGA Award-nominated TV writer. She first co-wrote season two’s “Klick,” which put Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) on...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been having a rough time lately. From a quality standpoint, it shows in every single one of their products and the audience’s reactions to them. It seems people are not just interested enough to follow the overarching story of the MCU in these new phases. With more movies and TV series coming out in the future, it might be that the MCU will plummet even deeper. Echo, the latest Marvel TV series on Disney+, dares to go in a different direction, and just for that, it is partially successful.

There’s a ply problem — at least, Canadian filmmaker Michael Zelniker believes so.
In his latest eco-doc endeavor “The Issue With Tissue – A Boreal Love Story,” Zelniker explores the effects of toilet paper manufacturing on Canada’s boreal forest region, which is chopped down yearly to supply the disposable yet highly relied-upon product.
The feature documentary focuses on the effects Boreal deforestation has on Indigenous populations and reveals some Canadian politicians’ one-sided view of the issue, who focus more on the prospects of labor opportunities from toilet paper production rather than its consequences on the country’s ecosystem. The documentary posits these facts as inextricable, pointing to the toilet paper problem as one with multifaceted, long-lasting effects. One subject of the film helps to sum this up, saying, “These are not environmental issues, these are existential issues.”

A video that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) posted to her Twitter feed, in which she celebrated the election of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House and her bonds with the new chamber leader, was pulled from the platform after a copyright complaint from Dr. Dre.
The spot featured Dre’s hit “Still D.R.E.,” but he told TMZ that it was used without his permission. “I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one,” he told TMZ. TMZ also posted a cease and desist letter that Dre’s attorney Howard King sent to the congresswoman, who was a key ally for McCarthy as he attempted to lock up votes on the right.

Porter’s Better Call Saul, Vol. 3, featuring music penned for the final season of the Breaking Bad prequel-spinoff, will be available everywhere via Milan Records tomorrow.
The acclaimed series from creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould has for the most part flashed back to examine how fledgling attorney Slippin’ Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) became the amoral con man and criminal representative Saul Goodman of Breaking Bad fame, also flashing forward to his life on the run in Omaha, under the alias Gene Takovic. If there’s one thing every composer feels the same way about, it may be this: Death to temp music.
“I think we all agree that temp music is evil,” “This Is Us” composer Siddhartha Khosla said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: Composers panel (watch above), which also included Carter Burwell (“Space Force”), Curtis Moore (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Dave Porter (“Better Call Saul” and “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) and Colin Stetson (“Barkskins”).
Porter, who’s been part of the “Breaking Bad” franchise since the beginning, shares that he’s been “fortunate very early on to instill in them that temp music is evil, so I’ve avoided that all these years, which is an absolute blessing, of course.”

Much like on “Breaking Bad,” the music on “Better Call Saul” is a vital, unmistakable extra character on the show — and one that is also very different from post-modern Western sound of the mothership. But composer Dave Porter wasn’t always sure it should’ve been.
“When we started ‘Better Call Saul,’ it was one of the harder creative things I’ve ever had to do because it was not that long after the end of ‘Breaking Bad,’” Porter explained on Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: Composers panel (watch above). “It was all the same folks that I’ve been working with, but of course they’re asking for something as radically different as we could imagine, which is hard to do, especially when you’re coming off of something that seemed to be pretty successful for folks. Better Call Saul returns for its fifth season on February 23rd — but don’t expect any current music to make it on to the soundtrack. If there’s one word creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould would use to describe the sound of Saul, it’s “wistful.” And, to hit that note, the duo and their music team often turn to the vaults.

Composers John Powell and Germaine Franco took top honors at Wednesday night’s Screen Music Awards of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (Ascap) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Powell, composer of the Oscar-nominated score for “How to Train Your Dragon” and the new “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” received the Henry Mancini Award for his “outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music.”
Franco, songwriter and arranger of last year’s “Coco” who was also recently named “one of 15 Latinas who are changing the world” by Univision, received the Shirley Walker Award, given to a composer “whose achievements have contributed to the diversity of film and television music.”
Both composers spent more time talking about the composers in whose honor the awards were named, rather than about themselves or their own music. Before the ceremony, Powell told Variety that he met Mancini when...

The Elvis Presley stories repeated most often these days are rarely flattering. Some emphasize his lethal appetite for fatty foods and prescription painkillers; others dwell on bizarre anecdotes like his meeting with Richard Nixon, where he warned the president that the Beatles had an "anti-American spirit." The overall picture in these tales depicts a sweaty, bloated country bumpkin in a sequined jumpsuit who is quick to fire a gun at his own television set. It's a pathetic, cartoon distortion of the man that has little relation to the musical genius from Tupelo,...

It’s hardly news that music can make any film or television show, but just how important is music while putting a high-profile show together? The executive producers of AMC’s “Preacher” gave us some insight into how music not only inspires the hit TV drama, but how it makes everything click in the editing room.
At a “Preacher” screening event earlier this month, we asked executive producers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin a few questions about music and its place in the world of “Preacher.”
“Editing is really interesting because you come into it, and you first see the cut, the original assembly, and it just fills you with despair cause it’s nothing at all what you’d hoped for,” Catlin said. “And then you work with the editor, and then it starts to get better and better, and then you show it again and it looks like crap.

The new Music Supervisor category this Emmy season finally honors the supervisor’s creative contribution to narrative storytelling and music aesthetic: Licensing songs that are appropriately iconic and emotionally resonant, while touting some of the hottest new talent.
Here are the nominees: Thomas Golubic (“Better Call Saul” — “Sunk Costs”), Susan Jacobs (“Big Little Lies” — “You Get What You Need”), Manish Raval, Jonathan Leahy, Tom Wolfe (“Girls”— “Goodbye Tour”), Zach Cowie, Kerri Drootin (“Master of None” — “Amarsi Un Po”), and Nora Felder (“Stranger Things” — “Chapter Two: The Weirdo on Maple Street”).
The results included three female supervisors (Jacobs, Drootin, and Felder) and demonstrated the brand power of HBO (“Big Little Lies,” “Girls”) and Netflix (“Master of None,” “Stranger Things”). But in the end, it came down to a battle of dueling playlists.

Last Week’S Review: Jimmy Is, Once Again, ‘A Little Bit Crooked’
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 3, Episode 3, “Sunk Costs.”]
Case Summary
While technically last week gave us our first glimpse of Gus Fring, here we really see the man in action in his first one-on-one scene with Mike. It’s just one scene, early in the episode, but the menace Giancarlo Esposito can bring to one relatively subdued encounter remains a thing of wonder. Not that Mike is any less scary. Consider the calm but firm way he makes it clear to Gus that he is not done with the Salamancas, and his methodical actions over the course of the episode that lead directly to Salamanca henchmen getting arrested at the border.
Meanwhile, the consequences for Jimmy’s outrage get unveiled in stark detail: Chuck is pressing charges, in a deliberate attempt to get Jimmy disbarred — which will very likely happen if Jimmy ends up with a felony on his record.

It’s hard enough creating music for one show. But for almost every theme Dave Porter creates for “Better Call Saul,” he has to think about how it fits in with the musical world he already created for “Breaking Bad.” Porter ambitiously created individual pieces for key characters on “Breaking Bad,” and gets to use some of them again for “Saul.” But because “Saul” is mostly set years before “Breaking Bad,” Porter needs the music to reflect those characters earlier in their lives. (The title character, for example, isn’t yet the smooth criminal lawyer Saul Goodman of “Breaking Bad...

After years in the works, a TV series adaptation of Garth Ennis' acclaimed comic series "Preacher" is finally set to hit screens shortly with this year's SXSW set to premiere the two-hour pilot episode on March 14th.
Sam Catlin ("Breaking Bad") serves as show runner and executive producer alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg who are adapting the property for AMC and have enlisted Dominic Cooper as the titular preacher Jesse Custer, Joseph Gilgun as the Irish vampire Cassidy, and Ruth Negga as Jesse's old flame Tulip.
Today, the network has released new photos of the trio of leads which you can see below. A premiere date for the series has not yet been announced, but the show has picked up "Breaking Bad" composer Dave Porter to compose original music for the series.

“I’m no hero,” says Jimmy McGill. Well, no Jimmy. You aren’t. But bless you for trying.
Much of Better Call Saul’s third episode – more low-key than last week’s, which is no bad thing – concerns entanglement; specifically, the entanglement of Jimmy’s drive for self-preservation and his attempts to do the right thing by others. The fact that we already know that Jimmy is going to end up becoming Saul Goodman gives weight to his desire to do right (or as right as he’s capable of doing), as we know that somehow, probably through a combination of rotten luck and his own character flaws, it’s a desire that’s going to be more or less stamped out of him. It lends an...

Better Call Saul is getting more Breaking Bad–like by the day: First we got Mike Ehrmantraut, then we got Vince Gilligan, and now we have learned that Breaking Bad composer Dave Porter (who co-wrote the Junior Brown song that dropped yesterday) will be scoring the spinoff. Porter scored all 62 episodes of BrBa and wrote the theme song. "Dave Porter is an irreplaceable member of the Breaking Bad family, and we're thrilled to have him aboard Better Call Saul," says Gilligan. "He gets right to the heart of every scene, writing a score that resonates perfectly with the story. I can't imagine doing our new show without him.” Now we just need those rumored Walt and Jesse cameos to come to fruition and it will be like we never left.

Who is behind that catchy jingle for Better Call Saul? A day after AMC released a music video for the Bob Odenkirk-led series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Breaking Bad composer Dave Porter — responsible for the song's music with Adam Dornblum — will be scoring the spinoff. Porter's first to-do item for the February 2015 series was to work on the hysterical tune, which aired at the end of the network's Breaking Bad binge marathon. It is performed by country singer Junior Brown, with lyrics by series creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Watch more 'Better Call Saul' Music

Drive after drinking three Long Island Iced Teas? Steal a George Foreman Grill from a Walmart? Have kids in your "creepy van?" Now there's a song telling you to do what Breaking Bad fans already know you should: call Saul Goodman. In anticipation of Saul's Breaking Bad prequel series, Better Call Saul, AMC released a "Better Call Saul" music video for the song performed by country musician Junior Brown. The video features a bit of footage from the show, though it mostly focuses on Brown, who is surrounded by pretty women showing off TVs with Saul on their screens. The...

Just a year after Breaking Bad and its antihero Walter White bid farewell to television, we now finally have our first real glimpse at the spinoff series Better Call Saul, which stars Bob Odenkirk reprising his role of scummy lawyer Saul Goodman. At the conclusion of AMC's Breaking Bad marathon on Sunday night, the network unveiled some more teasers for the highly anticipated show in the form of a music video for the appropriately titled "Better Call Saul," performed by country artist Junior Brown.

Breaking Bad ephemera started out as fun fan stuff but is slowly starting to take on sacred-relic status. Here lies Tio Salamanca's bell. Behold it and bask in its glory. And bask we shall. The latest entry in the canon is the Breaking Bad original score on vinyl. The Sony-owned Madison Gate Records is putting out a two-lp picture disc of about an hour of music from Bb composer Dave Porter. For unknown reasons, the set will be sold exclusively at Hot Topic, which instantly makes it weird and sad and mall goth.

Although there has been an increase in songs being featured this season on The Walking Dead, it actually started last year and AMC previously released a soundtrack featuring music from Season 3. That soundtrack is now headed to vinyl, along with the score from Breaking Bad, and we have all the details on both releases:
“Coming to planet earth during November 2013, record label imprint Spacelab9 makes its debut with vinyl releases for the official score to AMC and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s hit series and Emmy® winning drama Breaking Bad followed by the official soundtrack to multi-award winning fan-favorite drama series The Walking Dead. A limited picture disc LP edition for each will be available exclusively from lifestyle retail giant Hot Topic, hitting store shelves on November 26th and December 3rd respectively, available while supplies last.
This marks the first time that “Breaking Bad (Original Score From The Television Series)” will be offered on vinyl format.

There are many elements that have come together to make "Breaking Bad" not only one of the best shows on TV right now, but really of all time. From the fearless plotting, the breathless direction and the outstanding performances from the cast — Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Bob Odenkirk, Dean Norris, Anna Gunn and many more — all have come together in the kind of perfect storm you don't get too often. But not mentioned nearly often enough is the score by Dave Porter. Providing cues to a drama that is so rich in twists, surprises, retribution and small moments of grace is no easy task, but Porter accomplishes it with a subtle hand. His score rarely intrudes on the show, but instead adds a nicely honed texture that's part and parcel of the complex stories and New Mexico setting. And while the disc of his work has been in stores since last summer,...

"There are some new characters we haven't even met yet, and there's some new situations for Jesse [Aaron Paul], for which I wrote a lot of music in a meter of five. Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season
Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Giancarlo Esposito, Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt, Jonathan Banks, Bob Odenkirk, Rj Mitte | Created by Vince Gilligan
For nearly every television series there is at least one seminal season; for Breaking Bad it is most definitely Season 4*. Vince Gilligan and his band of writers and directors have expertly crafted 12 episodes of pure dynamism, drama and delight, unlike anything seen on television before.
Having finished Season 3 on excruciatingly tantalising and tense events, Season 4 does not ease you in. Instead, it pins you to your seat from the moment the smoky title fades into the episode. Episode 1 has little dialogue and one gruesome murder that may deter anyone walking in on or randomly switching over to the Emmy award winning show, but to those that know and love Gilligan’s incredible programme, it is a welcome continuation to the...

On Sunday night, Breaking Bad aired its final episode for 2012. Breaking Bad is a show tailor-made for discussion due to its habit of constantly shocking and surprising the viewer, leaving them desperately wanting to see what happens next. Because of that, I figured the best way to talk about the past eight episodes is to get a ragtag group of fellow Breaking Bad-fans and have an in-depth discussion on the highs, the lows, and what we think will happen next. I’m joined by J.D. Lyons, Jeremy Flores, Matt Legarreta (of the new website GeekBinge), and Jake Wilbanks.
Don’t let the discussion end here. Post your thoughts on the season and predictions for the series’ end in the comments below.
Jeremy Sollie: Welcome, everyone. I’m glad you all could make it. Grab a seat on the metaphorical couch. What were everyone’s thoughts on this half-season as a whole?...

The following post contains spoilers. If you are not caught up on the current episode of Breaking Bad, proceed with caution. This current season of Breaking Bad has successfully hit the accelerator as we get closer and closer to the end of the series. The shocking end of former kingpin Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) has only made way for a new one – our increasingly sinister anti-hero, Walter White (Bryan Cranston.) The formerly meek and mild chemistry teacher may now view himself as an untouchable, successful drug lord, but those around him are suffering the consequences – whether they realize it or not. Since the beginning, Breaking Bad has gotten its distinct and inventive sound from composer Dave Porter. I spoke with Porter before the premiere of Season 5 and his teases of what was to come (both musically and episodically) have proven to be as true as those flash forward glimpses director Vince Gilligan and co. are...

It’s not a full album release of the band “Twaught Hammer”, but believe me, this is much better news. Madison Gates is releasing this sweet compilation of Dave Porter‘s compositions from all five seasons of Breaking Bad on August 28. Some of the classic musical cues from Breaking Bad‘s run make up Breaking Bad: Original Score From The Television Series with extended versions and new tracks that have not yet been heard. The only portion of the series that will not make the disc is any music from the final eight episodes because those episodes have not been filmed yet. We can only hope for another release if this one sells well.
