“I can’t believe I did it,” says Kara Saun on the “Project Runway” after show immediately following her elimination from the competition in the episode “Freedom.” She’s not talking about her design from the challenge that got her eliminated. She’s talking about her decision to come back to the show in the first place. Watch her interview with Christian Siriano above.
Kara Saun previously appeared in the show in the very first season in 2004, when she finished second behind Jay McCarroll. She agreed to come back for this All-Stars season in honor of her mother. “I promised her prior to her transcending,” she told Siriano, as she had tearfully told the judges upon her elimination. “I am [glad I came back]. The fact that I’m here at challenge nine or whatever, I was so happy.”

If it were up to us, "Project Runway" would never be "out," it would just play on a loop 24/7/365.
Sadly, Season 14 will say auf wiedersehen on Thursday, November 5th, so now seems like a good time to take stock and rank the previous 13 seasons, with the expectation that the 2015 season will probably fall somewhere in the middle of the pack once it's done. (Tim Gunn "hated" Season 14, but there have been worse.) Every season of PR is a precious, unique little rhinestone, but, like the judges, we have our favorites -- and now it's Our turn to be biased.
So here's our very subjective but still definitive worst-to-best ranking, which may only be challenged by a glare from Nina Garcia, an eye roll from Michael Kors, a "make it work" from Tim Gunn, or an "out" from Heidi Klum.
13. Season 11 (aka 'Teams')Maybe it seemed like a good, or at least dramatic,...

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. I don't know a single person who believes "Project Runway" is at its best now, but the decade-old reality competition is still chugging along, and that's a remarkable feat for a show that peaked in terms of sheer entertainment value at the end of its first season. Yes, season one. Say what you will about the subsequent cycles, which have included some of the most hilarious contestants (Santino Rice, Laura Bennett, the loopy, lovable puppetrix Elisa Jimenez) and undeniable talents (Christian Siriano, Mondo Guerra, Leanne Marshall) in reality history, but "Project Runway" has almost always required trumped-up workroom drama to keep us coming back. Season three succeeded with the Jeffrey Sebelia cheating allegations and season eight offered up an irritating, intriguing teacher's pet in the form of winner Gretchen Jones, but the duller seasons...

When Emmy nominations come out, I can’t stop ranking and re-ranking which nominees deserve to win most — which is not the same thing as a prediction. This practice is a compulsion and a gift (or something), and today I’m cementing my personal picks for one of my favorite categories: Outstanding Reality Competition. I’m so passionate about this hokey topic, I’ve even added a seventh nominee out of pure frustration. The actual nominees are The Amazing Race (ugh, sigh), The Voice, Top Chef, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, and Dancing with the Stars. We’ll rank those in a second, but for argument’s sake, here’s my pick for a seventh-place show.

Just hours before filming the finale of Lifetime’s Project Runway, designers of the show’s current season greeted fans at Lord & Taylor’s Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York City for Fashion’s Night Out. Two floors below, past competitors Jay McCarroll, Nick Verreos and Mondo Guerra promoted L&T’s capsule collection celebrating the show’s tenth anniversary. Nearby, show judge Michael Kors hosted “Kors Karaoke” at his Madison Avenue storefront with guest judges Nikki Reed, Kate Upton and Nina Arianda. But many Project Runway fans ventured to NoLita and lined up for the chance to meet Christian Siriano, the eccentric season 4

Tim Gunn is unquestionably one of the smartest and most candid figures to gain fame as a reality show regular. As the designers' mentor on Project Runway, he's critical and honest, even if in subsequent interviews he sometimes seems like a shill for the contestants. (Calling season three runner-up Uli Herzner's eye for great prints "second only to Diane von Furstenberg" was and is a stretch.) Still, he's a thrillingly articulate professional. On yesterday's episode of his panel show The Revolution, Gunn enjoyed another moment of refreshing candor, admitting he hasn't had sex in 29 years. He's broached that topic before, but it's time we compile his proud moments of (often harsh) truth-telling in one place. Here are my favorites:
On relishing his 29 years as a single man
"The truth is, I don't have time to be a good partner. Relationships take commitment, and all my energy goes into my work.

Much as I forswore never again to take on the thankless task of recapping a Project Runway season from beginning to end like I did last year (unless, ahem, you wanna throw some major cashish my way) we have to, just simply have to, watch the PR All Stars premiere Thursday January 5 at 9/8 central on Lifetime. I mean, how can we not? So let's take a look at the contestants and try to figure out why they're putting themselves through this hell again.
First of all you need to be aware that there will be nary a leggy German supermodel with a proclivity towards short hems in sight, nor a dashing and debonair silver-haired bespectacled and impeccably dressed mentor who's been known to give out hugs on occasion, nor a famed designer who can cut one dead with merely a sentence tossed their way. Yep. No Klum, No Kors, No Gunn.

Tonight's the night, kids! No, not that night. Not Santa and presents and sugarplums night. That's two nights from now.
Tonight's the night when we finally learn which X Factor finalist got the best Christmas present ever from America: That $5 million contract, a Pepsi Super Bowl commercial, and the lifelong title of Very First Winner of The X Factor USA. The winner probably even gets a special gold card to keep in their wallet that gets them into special Very First Winner Lounges where they can rub elbows with Kelly Clarkson, Adrienne Curry, Jay McCarroll and Richard Hatch. (Just kidding! Richard's card got revoked when he joined that other, slightly less exclusive club, Prison.)
Who's Going To Win? I honestly couldn't tell you. My gut says Melanie, but what if everyone else's guts also said Melanie, so they voted extra-hard for Josh and Chris, who were equally as amazing (if not more so,...

Is it me, or has Tim Gunn been off all this Project Runway season? He and the judges have not been agreeing. On Finale Part I, he liked Josh’s catsuit jumper. He liked Viktor’s hard and soft dress.

So we start the final finale going to Mood, for Kimberly, Viktor, Anya and Josh to pick out new fabrics and try to appease the powers that be. Viktor is remaking his gown.

There have been a few seasons where it felt like Project Runway was trying to find itsfooting after the move to Lifetime. The designers seemed uninspired and theirstories weren’t that compelling. There were no great stand-out personalitieslike Austin Scarlett or Jay McCarroll.
But this season, Runway is strutting its stuff again. There have been controversial designs like Peaches’ polka dot dress and Casanova’s granny looks.Still, the new designers like Mondo and Michael C. are far more talented andinteresting than in recent years. And, enhanced by an extrahalf-hour long, 90-minute format, which allows for more time with the judgesduring deliberation. After all, designers are in and they are out, but HeidiKlum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia are here to stay.
In a recent conference call interview Garcia spoke about Marie Claire, Tim Gunn’s recent judges on “crack” comment, and whatgives a Runway winner staying power.

Runway’s hostess with the mostest, Heidi Klum, alongside hubby of five years Seal, will moonlight as counselors to couples in crisis on the tentatively titled Lifetime program Love’s Divine, Variety announced May 27.
The second show pairs fan favorite Austin Scarlett with the controversial Santino Rice. Both men will be giving fashion makeovers to women across the country. This program will be produced by Rich Bye, who previously worked on Bravo’s Project Jay, designer Jay McCarroll’s Runway spinoff.

With Mother's Day fast approaching and my own mother far, far away (at her computer), I've been thinking about some of my favorite TV mamas. There are so many classics -- June Cleaver, Harriet Nelson, Clair Huxtable, Roseanne Conner, Marge Simpson, "Aunt Becky," and so on. As a viewer, I tend to marvel the most in "caricature moms" like Arrested Development's Lucille Bluth, Married...With Children's Peg Bundy, Seinfeld's Estelle Costanza ("George likes the bananas!") or, more recently, Mad Men's Betty Draper. As a daughter, I have the biggest soft spots for those who remind me of my own mom,...

Graduates of Bravo's reality competitions have ventured to other networks in the past -- with mixed results. Project Runway's Santino Rice took a panelist gig on Logo's exceptional RuPaul's Drag Race while Jay McCarroll jogged laps alongside Bobby Brown on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club. The newest addition to that list is somehow the most questionable: Marcel Vigneron, the cocky Top Chef runner-up with the Ludwig von Koopa hair and firebreathing capacity, will front a new Syfy series devoted to... well, something related to sci-fi, right? Who is going to take home $200,00? Will it be beer-drinking Bobby Brown, Uber-Wimp Kevin Federline, or ego maniac Sebastian Bach? We have a favorite!

VH1 announced that the new season of Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp will include Bobby Brown, Kevin Federline, Shar Jackson, and Project Runway season one winner Jay McCarroll. At least Jay is reliable for quips; K-Fed and Shar will spend their confessionals remembering that bad things happen when they start talking. And say what you will about VH1's tackiness in choosing Bobby Brown, but the network is pretty effectively knocking the poo out of the butt of America's obesity epidemic. Right. Tonight "Project Runway" returns home to New York City. But can the long-running reality series -- snagged from Bravo in a drawn-out legal battle and roundly criticized in its first outing on Lifetime -- return to form? Here, two former contestants call out Season 6's most-cited criticisms, while the show's executive producers defend themselves. This time, they insist, they'll make it work. Season 6 was a boring copy of the Bravo original. Season one winner Jay McCarroll, who will appear on the coming season of VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club," has...

Bravo has announced plans for three spinoff series. Project Runway winner Christian Siriano will front a show about setting up a shop and marketing a clothing line, Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel's project will concern her career as natural foods chef and love life, and Top Chef contestant Fabio Viviani's series will document his new restaurant in Los Angeles. Thus far only Viviani's show has a title, Fabio: A Catered Affair. Are these guys really good to enough to step into the solo-project shoes of Tim Gunn, Jay McCarroll, and, uh, Jo de la Rosa? Ok, five yards of bargain seersucker from Mood Fabrics is better than Jo. [Variety]...

It's The Best.Gay.Week.Ever! But In Designer Clothes!
Oh, the irony of having me write a fashion-themed Bgwe! Why so ironic? How about because it's 5 Pm and I'm currently wearing Target slippers, Target lounge pants and a ratty sweathshirt. Did I mention these are my good clothes?
Not fair! I actually shower every single day! Mostly...
Why the sudden interest in fashion? Well, there was Fashion Week having taken place last week in New York and the Oscars in L.A. on Sunday, but I was really inspired by last week's episode of Ugly Betty which ended with Betty finally "getting" that fashion isn't just about expensive clothes but is actually "art" and about taking what's on the inside emotionally, spiritually, etc. and putting it on the outside.
I guess she's feeling wing-y on the inside?
I found that an interesting way to look at fashion and thusly...

If Jay McCarroll is somehow a victim of his own fame, he won't admit it. The first winner of the Emmy-nominated Project Runway hasn't broken the fashion world wide open, and he says that's an impossible goal to achieve in just a handful of years.
But the outspoken McCarroll, who did not take his six-figure winnings from the show, is still trying to push towards that finish line, constantly working and re-working his line of designs. Eleven Minutes directors Michael Selditch and Robert Tate spent many months with McCarroll as he prepared for his brief walk under the bright lights of New York's Fashion Week, showing us exactly how the newcomer prepared for his first independent show...without the helping hand of Heidi Klum and company.

I guess there's some kind of big movie event happening on TV this weekend, but enough about that. The Indie Spotlight is here to tell you about the limited-release films opening today that haven't been beaten into your head already by a thousand TV commercials. Here are the gems -- all of them very well reviewed -- that the indie gods have blessed us with this week:
Must Read After My Death (pictured) is a personal documentary by Morgan Daws in which he uses old Dictaphone recordings, home movies, and photographs to tell his family's story, including details he never knew until after his grandmother died. Cinematical's James Rocchi, reviewing the film at last year's L.A. You may be a devoted follower of Leanne or Christian or Jeffrey, but if you're a real Project Runway devotee, you were there at the beginning, with Jay. Jay McCarroll was Project Runway's first winner, and since being crowned "the next great American designer" by Heidi Klum and Bravo, he's been working to find his place in a high-fashion world that he never particularly wanted to be a part of. Now part of that journey has been documented in Eleven Minutes, a film that documents the lead-up to his Bryant Park runway show at Fashion Week in fall 2007. Where the design and manufacturing process is shown in slick montages on Project Runway, Eleven Minutes shows all the infuriating details, from sending out invites to fashion editors to figuring out how much of the sewing to export to China. In the middle of it all is McCarroll, whose outsized personality...

Eleven Minutes
Featuring Jay McCarroll, Nancy Kane, and Kelly Cutrone
Directed by Michael Selditch and Robert Tate
Rated R
Reality television has created an almost embarrassing array of minor celebrities, everyone from the naked tax evader guy on Survivor to William Hung. If we've seen them, how will we ever forget that shrieking religious banshee of Trading Spouses or Omarosa from The Apprentice?
These shows aren't immune from big personalities; that's the reason most people watch. But few reality or competition shows have as much on the ball as Project Runway. The contestants actually have to do something, and do it in original ways. EVery stitch is scrutinized.
From a pool of fashion designers, three are chosen each season to display their new lines of clothes at New York's Fashion Week, one of the biggest events in that entire industry. It would be like determining the American Idol winner by...

No field attracts eccentrics like the cloistered world of the fashion industry, so it was only natural that Project Runway, Bravo’s wildly popular reality competition show, would nurture their idiosyncrasies all the more. But in five seasons, the cameras have never loved a character quite as much as Season One winner Jay McCarroll, a brash, uncompromising outsider from small-town Pennsylvania who provided a never-ending font of bitchy one-liners. Subsequent seasons have featured plenty of made-for-tv goofballs, but McCarroll’s personality never seemed like shtick, and his wit was often a cover for an underlying restlessness and insecurity. A couple ...

This week at the movies, we've got spirited scoundrels who join a cheerleading squad to meet girls (Fired Up!, starring Nicholas D'Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen) and a septuagenarian scofflaw who brings her brand of no-nonsense candor to the slammer (Madea Goes to Jail, starring Tyler Perry and Derek Luke). And that's just what's going wide. In the world of limited releases, we've got a powerful documentary about family dysfunction (Must Read After My Death), a Polish World War II drama (Andrzej Wajda's Katyn), and a documentary about Project Runway winner Jay McCarroll (Eleven Minutes). With all eyes on the upcoming Academy Awards (not to mention the Spirit Awards, the afternoon before), it's a relatively quiet week at the box office. There are some bubblegum high school antics, a couple of documentaries about the dysfunctional, a children's literary classic and a somber drama set during WWII. Take heart, we're nearly over the hump.

Spring is a season of renewal, particularly in the movie business, where the completion of the awards derby allows Amy Adams to segue from playing a solemn nun in "Doubt" to a klutzy crime scene cleaner in "Sunshine Cleaning." Along with "Sunshine," there are plenty of festival favorites about to get their day in the sun, whether that's in theaters, on DVD or on demand online or on TV. This preview recognizes the many ways to get your indie film fix, as well as the special events you might want to head out to if you live in New York or Los Angeles, including "The Brothers Bloom" director Rian Johnson's week-long con man movie "Festival of Fakery" at L.A.'s famed New Beverly Cinema, about which we recently spoke to the director. But regardless of whether we're watching films from the past or present, we're looking forward to the next couple months.

Jay McCarroll, the first winner of Project Runway, makes great TV. That's a fact. He's bitchy, witty, eminently quotable, and truly likable, and it was pretty heartwarming when he was crowned by Heidi Klum as a designer to watch. However, with reality shows, the reality ends at the coronation. And the initial winners of skill-based reality juggernauts face a tricky time in the spotlight - on one hand, all eyes are on you and (binding) contracts are being thrown at your feet; on the other hand, you're newly famous, but not for your talent, quite yet. You're not exactly living off your skill, and if you choose the wrong path, you could end up in a Warholian nightmare, living off your moment of fame from the reality show. So what's a boy to do? McCarroll made headlines for turning down Runway's grand prize awards of $100,000 and a mentorship with Banana Republic.

[An indieWIRE review from Reverse Shot.] It’s doubtful anyone unfamiliar with Bravo’s series “Project Runway” will buy tickets to see the new documentary “Eleven Minutes,” even though Michael Selditch and Rob Tate’s film goes to great lengths to distance itself from that most trend-setting of TV reality shows. In its behind-the-scenes portrayal of “Runway”‘s season one winner Jay McCarroll, as he readies his first line for showcase and, hopefully, sale, “Eleven …...

'Project Runway's' Tim Gunn talks about Christian's win, 'Pr's' sourpuss and Tim's own 'diva moment'
Twelve hours after "Project Runway's" fourth season wrapped up, I was on the phone with Tim Gunn, the mentor of the aspiring designers on the Bravo reality show. We talked about Christian Siriano’s win and the collections of the other finalists.
Tim also talked about Season 5 of "Project Runway," whether his own show, "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style," is coming back, and he told a jaw-dropping story about what contestant Victorya Hong made him do in Mood Fabrics.
That story left me gasping -- but then he told a better one about his "diva moment" on the set of "Guide to Style." Settle in with a cup of coffee, "Runway" fans -- Tim Gunn's got hot, fresh gossip for you!
[By the way, my comments are in bold, Gunn's are in regular type.]
Tim Gunn: “What a season, huh?"
Mr: Definitely. I was blown away by the final collections.
