Diana Kennedy has been described as “the Mick Jagger” of Mexican food. Director Elizabeth Carroll makes her feature documentary debut with “Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy” (available on-demand) following the 97-year-old author, teacher and chef around Mexico, where Kennedy lives off the grid near Michoacan.
The documentary opens with Kennedy telling Carroll and her Dp Paul Mailman that she has “cooked my way through 80, 90 years of my life.” Viewers immediately get a sense of her feisty side before she starts to reminisce and tell her story. We see footage from renowned chefs such as Alice Waters and Rick Bayless who describe how this British woman became an influence on the way they cook Mexican food.
Dp Mailman tells Variety about traveling to Mexico to follow Kennedy on her hiking trails and how he captured the essence of what makes her Diana Kennedy, nothing fancy.

Two-year-old Red O, the trendy indoor-outdoor Mexican restaurant whose kitchen is overseen by Chicago über-chef Rick Bayless, has just offset its existing menu of pork belly sopes and goat cheese tamales with a slew of new raw bar dishes. When it comes to Chicago-based drag queen Dida Ritz, what you see is, more or less, what you get.
The popular Logo reality competition series "RuPaul's Drag Race" has become virtually synonymous with the sort of side-eyed spiciness stereotypically ascribed to the modern drag performer's persona. The popular Logo reality competition series "RuPaul's Drag Race" has become virtually synonymous with the sort of side-eyed spiciness stereotypically ascribed to the modern drag performer's persona. Chicago – Some fans are going to want to send back the latest offering from Chef Tom Colicchio and the team behind Bravo’s Emmy-winning “Top Chef.” At first, it’s a little baffling to see one of the most acclaimed reality programs of all time switch up its formula this notably with a series of starting challenges that will remind viewers of “American Idol.” But I believe fans can adjust and have faith in Colicchio and his belief that the new structure will create the most intense competition yet. It’s a new sauce but it’s ultimately the same amazing dish.

Everything’s bigger in Texas, so why not start “Top Chef: Texas” with a Gigantic cast? When 29 chefs show up at the Alamo to be greeted by the lovely Padma Lakshmi, the smart ones know something unusual is up. They can’t possibly have that many Elimination Challenges.

Top Chef Masters concludes its third season tonight, and the show has changed a lot from its first season. Those changes have been both good and bad, but I do miss the talent, the camraderie, and the judges from the first season. So it's a good time to revisit it via an interview with its winner. Season one winner Rick Bayless revealed some behind-the-scenes details last August in a conversation that's part of Authors@Google. Among...

The popcorn is popped! The 40 lb box of Junior Mints, opened! Turn off your cell phones, make a donation to the Will Rogers Institute and shush the giggly teenager behind you, because Wednesday night was "Songs of the Cinema" on "American Idol X: No Girls Allowed!"
With Pia Toscano off gallivanting with Ellen DeGeneres and record labels (so says the rumor mill!), the top eight faced even more scrutiny than usual. From viewers, that is. We all know the judges cheerleaders would give the contestants a standing ovation even if they just belched the alphabet. Unless that contestant's name rhymes with Paley Fineheart. (More on that later.)
But by the time the final note was shouted, the last "amazing" critique was uttered and the phone numbers were recapped, not one "Idol" stood out as being the next biggest thing in pop music. Nor jazz music, for that matter, regardless of...

Creators seem to have mostly abandoned the Windy City now, following a heavily tweeted Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo over the weekend. In its wake, C2E2 left us with sketches, cosplay images and even a fancy menu prepared by Rick Bayless that was served to the Marvel gang.
Not all of the pics posted over the weekend were full of happiness, though. Ryan Ottley announced that he didn't think some of his old "Invincible" artwork was up to snuff and held a TwitPic'd burning party (hat tip to @salloria). Check out the evidence belong, along with a wish for At&T following their purchase of T-Mobile.

If your ticket to the Oscars got lost in the post, don't despair. Our experts know just where to go to bump in to the hottest celebs. Here are their top tips

Very Public Restaurants!
No, celebrities don't actually eat. But they do Love having their picture taken. A lot! So celebs will flock to those restaurants where the paparazzi are usually swarming. It's a safe bet that you can run into a star at The Ivy (113 N Robertson Blvd; +1 310 274 8303), Toast (8221 West 3rd Street; +1 323 655 5018, toastbakerycafe.net) or Joan's On 3rd (8350 West Third Street; +1 323 655 2285, joansonthird.com). Those are the top three "Look At Me" restaurants, but they're not even the best! My favourite eatery in Los Angeles is José Andrés's The Bazaar (465 South La Cienega Blvd; +1 310 246 5555, thebazaar.com), which specialises in tapas done with a molecular-gastronomy twist.
High-End Retail!

After an arduous regimen of cooking and eating, Fast Company selects our favorite celeb-chef products.
Some celebrity chefs are better known for catchphrases ("Yum-o!") than cooking, so using tools embossed with their names can be embarrassing. But other chefs insist they put their names only on products that live up to their own high standards. We put some of these to the test and found seven that boast famous names and are nothing to be ashamed of.
1. Salsa
When Frontera Grill's Rick Bayless talks food, he loses himself in the nuances of his ingredients. His tomatillo salsa features deliciously measured cilantro, not-too-sweet tomatillos, serrano chiles, and garlic. ($4.95, fronterakitchens.com)
2. Steak
Emeril Lagasse, a kitchen-to-tv pioneer, keeps himself on the right side of the branding trend with these well-marbled grain-fed bone-in 20 oz. rib eyes. The steaks, which come air-sealed, need nothing more than a dash of salt...

Jetting to one of his favorite Chicago restaurants isn't so easy for President Obama anymore, so he did the next best thing - he invited renowned chef Rick Bayless to cook for him and 200 guests at the White House. Bayless, who won Top Chef Masters' first season and is a fixture on the Chicago culinary scene, served Oregon Wagyu beef in Oaxacan Black mole at Wednesday's state dinner for Mexican president Felipe Calderón and his wife, Margarita Zavala. For Michelle Obama, the meal especially conjured memories of the Windy City. "The First Lady was really pleased," Bayless told People.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle hosted the second state dinner of his administration last night at the White House to celebrate an official visit from Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his wife Margarita. Michelle and Margarita got physical earlier in the day during a visit to a Maryland elementary school, but both women were dressed up, with Michelle in a Peter Soronen gown, to join a fresh-from-Cannes Eva Longoria. Beyonce Knowles had the honor of performing for the distinguished crowd with the Mexican act Rodrigo y Gabriela, after she also sang for the president last year at his inauguration. It was a lavish evening for all with a specially prepared menu from chef Rick Bayless, whose cooking Eva was especially excited to try. If you fell asleep after drinking an entire bottle of Quickfire Cabernet Sauvignon as Rick Bayless prepared his Top Chef Masters-winning 20 ingredient mole and completely missed Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage, despair not. The Fox freak show would have totally killed your buzz and sunk you deeper into depression knowing that somewhere, fourteen kids were wailing as their mother preened for the cameras, dissed Kate Gosselin, got an angel tattoo and chattered about her house being haunted.

Our lives can best be described as the sum of all of our experiences leading up to this specific point in time. The same was true for the three master chefs--Hubert Keller, Rick Bayless, and Michael Chiarello--facing down the gauntlet on last night's season finale of Top Chef Masters ("Top Chef Master"), in which the trio squared off against one another in a perfectly fitting final challenge. This series is after all called Top Chef Masters, so I wanted to see what these incomparable master chefs could do when the gloves were off and there were no vending machines, microwaves, or mise-en-place relays to get through. In other words, I wanted to see what they could do with larger budgets, limitless imagination, and unfettered ambition to draw upon. Their challenge: to prepare a four-course meal that best represented their entire careers thus far (and into the future), with...

Chicago chef Rick Bayless told the story of his career in food to win the finale of Bravo TV's "Top Chef Masters," which aired Wednesday night. His $100,000 prize goes to the charity he helped found, Frontera Farmer Foundation, which supports small Midwestern farms considered "sustainable." Throughout the series, Bayless relied on the Mexican regional dishes that have made him famous, including a heck of a lot of guacamole, but also more unusual dishes such as beef tongue tacos.

The competition among culinary pros on "Top Chef Masters" has come to an end with the announcement of a winner. Chicago native Rick Bayless beats Hubert Keller and Michael Chiarello by a few stars in the cooking competition's first season. Rick consequently receives the $100,000 cash prize which he donates to his charity Frontera Farmer Foundation.
In the finale airing Wednesday, August 19, the three finalists must pass four stages of challenges that trace back their past. They must cook their first food memory, dish that made them want to become a cook, first restaurant and what's next. Rick, whose expertise is in Mexican cuisine, brought in hickory-smoked quail, Oaxacan black mole, roast suckling pig cake, and a black rice soup called arroz a la tumbada respectively.

I was initially a bit resistant to "Top Chef Masters," but it has become an acceptable placeholder for Bravo in recent weeks. Host Kelly Choi hasn't made me stop missing Padma & Tom, while for a food critic, Judge James Oseland seems mighty confused by a lot of culinary exploration. It took a little while to realize that, Ludo Lefebvre aside, "Top Chef Masters" wasn't about gawking at spectacular flameouts, but was actually a celebration of the confident genius of titans like Rick Bayless and Hubert Keller. But enough with the placebos! "Top Chef" returns on Wednesday (July 19) night, with...

It's said that necessity is the mother of invention and restrictions can often pave the way to creativity. This week's episode of Top Chef Masters ("Dietary Restrictions") forced the five remaining master chefs to do just that when they were faced with their toughest challenge yet: catering a lunch for actress/singer Zooey Deschanel and her friends. The only problem: Deschanel is a vegan with gluten allergies and an aversion to soy to boot. If they had any chance of pulling off this complicated and restrictive meal, they would have to see beyond the limitations to offer up inventive and thoughtful meat- and dairy-free dishes that satisfied both the dietary restrictions of the party's hostess but also the diverse appetites of her guests. So, did this challenge prove to be a Herculean task or a walk in the garden for these astute chefs? Let's discuss. But before we get to the Elimination Challenge,...
