The Rolling Stones brought out Tyler Childers in Orlando on Monday night, June 3, for a special performance of their Sticky Fingers classic “Dead Flowers.”
Childers upped the number of guitars onstage to at least four, strumming his acoustic guitar to match Mick Jagger’s while Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards (as always) traded licks on electric. Childers also split vocal duties with with Jagger and added an extra layer of harmony to the country-inspired tune.

On Wednesday, a host of musicians came together to honor late Irish legends Shane MacGowan and Sinead O’Connor with a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Most notably, O’Connor’s daughter, Roisin Waters, paid tribute to her mother with a stirring performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
The concert also saw Bettye Lavette sing “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” Cat Power put her spin on “The Body of an American,” and Resistance Revival Chorus cover “Thank You for Hearing Me,” among other performances of O’Connor’s music. Additionally, Glen Hansard and Imelda May teamed up to perform MacGowan and O’Connor’s duet “Haunted.”
Among the artists who covered songs by MacGowan and his band The Pogues were Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano (“A Pair of Brown Eyes”), Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz (“The Church of Holy Spook”), Billy Bragg, The Hold Steady...

Dave Grohl paid tribute to his one-time Nirvana bandmate Paul McCartney (technically, it’s true!) with a rendition of “Live and Let Die” at the Love Rocks NYC benefit concert Thursday night, March 7.
The Foo Fighters frontman gave a characteristically full-throated performance of McCartney’s hit 1973 James Bond theme song. Though he strained a bit to hit some of the high notes during the ballad-y sections and left the “You know you did” refrain to the backing vocalists, he attacked the hard rock portions the way only Dave Grohl can.

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.
Americana is a wide-open category, partly because it’s hard to define. “I always look at half of the folk category and think they are more Americana than half of the Americana nominees,” says Nelson Gullett, an Americana radio veteran and music director at Wdvx in Knoxville. And as the nomination of Jackson Browne’s Downhill...

Actress Shruti Haasan has never been shy of showing her rock’n roll side these days as she has been frequently posting on her social media. This time, the actress-singer was belting songstress Bettye La Vette’s song ‘When a Woman’s Had Enough’. While the original track is more mellow and does not use much high notes, Shruti was singing it completely high and seemed to be doing more out of just casually enjoying herself rather than practicing it or anything.
On her Instagram Story, she posted her clip and captioned it: “Normal screamy mornings at home to annoy @santanu_hazarika_art on national boyfriend day.”
Donning a black shirt with a completely pixelated black and white background, the actress was merely dancing and letting her hair swing while belting the song and grooving to it.
Before this also, the ‘Gabbar is Back’ actress had never made her love...

When Tyler Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards, he let loose with an acceptance speech for the ages, denying the very term “Americana” and pointedly declaring himself a country artist.
“As a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said onstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium that year. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.”

In 2018, soul singer-songwriter Bettye Lavette released Things Have Changed, an album composed entirely of Bob Dylan songs. She found the way Dylan fans reacted to it frustrating, but she was even more upset with the musician himself. Several years after releasing Things Have Changed, Lavette shared why she has a bone to pick with Dylan.
Bettye Lavette did not appreciate the way Bob Dylan reacted to her album
When Lavette decided to release an album of Dylan songs, she specifically didn’t want to do covers in the traditional sense. She wanted to reinvent the songs, at least partially because she didn’t begin the project as a dyed-in-the-wool fan of Dylan.
“I have not heretofore been a Dylan fan, per se,” she told Rolling Stone. “I’m a song interpreter and singer, so I like anything that a good writer writes, but I’m not much of a music enthusiast,...

How did Ringo Starr decide to celebrate 80 years of 8-day weeks? By hosting his own Big Birthday Special livestream to benefit Black Lives Matter? By giving a shout out to the late Little Richard as “my hero”? By jamming on “Helter Skelter” with Paul McCartney? All of the above.
It was beyond fab to see Ringo sit behind his legendary drum kit and tell a worldwide audience: “Let’s say it again: Black lives matter! Stand up and make your voice heard!” His star-studded 80th birthday bash was a celebration...

Bettye Lavette spent the morning doing yard work at her home in West Orange, New Jersey. After that, she exercised, and now she’s thinking about dinner. “I have never seen so much repetition in my life,” the singer, 74, says of her life in isolation. Lavette has been touring since since her teens, when she scored her first R&b hit with 1963’s “My Man — He’s a Lovin’ Man,” on Atlantic Records. In the Sixties, she toured with Otis Redding and James Brown, who was a huge fan, but...

Blues Hall of Fame legend Bettye Lavette has released a timely cover of Billie Holiday’s standard “Strange Fruit” in conjunction with ongoing protests against systemic racism and violence toward black Americans.
Lavette chose to share the song ahead of schedule due to the current state of the country.
Written by Jewish poet Abel Meeropol and originally recorded by Holiday in 1939, “Strange Fruit” was inspired by a photo of two black men lynched by a crowd of white people who are seen smiling and pointing out the men’s bodies to the camera.

You could never accuse Man Man of being an upbeat band: cannibals, wolfmen, and plenty of heartbreak litter the Philly-l.A. band’s catalog, going all the way back to their 2004 debut, The Man in a Blue Turban With a Face.
Man Man’s upcoming LP, Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between, out May 1st, is perhaps their most devastating yet. There may be fewer obvious monsters this time, but there are demons aplenty.

Leela James is one of the few southern soul singers who can still achieve a hit today. Her most recent example, “Don’t Want You Back,” is an exercise in classic form — a handsome, raspy “good riddance” with a guitar that studiously recreates the sound of Hi Records. But the window-shaking drums updated that style enough to make it a Number One radio record.
James harnesses her vocal firepower for something more gnarled and abrasive on the Are You Ready Ep, due April 12. Lead single “I’m Not That Woman” is a vicious,...

After his father was on TV waxing poetic about a “crisis of the heart,” Donald Trump Jr., who once compared Syrian refugees to a bowl of poisoned Skittles, likened migrants to zoo animals.
“You know why you can enjoy a day at the zoo?” the son of President Donald Trump wrote in a since-deleted Instagram message posted Tuesday night. “Because walls work.”
The clueless analogy drew quick and widespread condemnation on social media. Seinfeld writer Larry Charles tweeted that Trump Jr. “is so blinded by his own hubris that he can’t see that once @realDonaldTrump falls, he will be nothing but a convict serving time for treason, in a cage, behind a wall.”

No list of things we don’t miss from the ’90s — scrunchies, Starter jackets, Discmans, Earthlink, talking to the hand — would be complete without the inclusion of the tribute album, a fad that seemed to die out by the end of the decade, with occasional flare-ups since. For every inspired concept that had alt rockers like Sonic Youth covering the Carpenters, there were a dozen bloated homages that had superstars commissioning all-star portraits of themselves, like 1991’s mostly useless “Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin.” It’s ironic these salutation sets never made it as a trend into the streaming age; if ever a format was made for cherry-picking, it’s one that assumes a consumer who wants Kate Bush’s take on “Rocket Man” also hankers to have Phil Collins burn down a mission or hear the ’Nam-themed “Daniel” assigned to Wilson Phillips.
But the tribute album,...
