"You are the one that left." "For my career." "I don't buy that." Brainstorm Media has revealed the trailer for an indie comedy titled Cora Bora, the latest from indie filmmaker Hannah Pearl Utt. This premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and it also played at the Provincetown, Frameline, Outfest LA, and Stockholm Film Festivals last year. Now set for a release in June in limited theaters. Cora Bora stars Hack's standout talent Meg Stalter as Cora. After a floundering music career, she goes back home to win her girlfriend back but will realize that it's much more than her love life that needs salvaging. The ensemble cast includes Jojo T. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, Chrissie Fit, Andre Hyland, Margaret Cho, with Chelsea Peretti and Darrell Hammond. This looks light and screwy and funny. Might be fun. // Continue Reading ›...

Meg Stalter is taking the lead in her latest feature “Cora Bora.”
The comedy, which premiered at the 2023 SXSW Festival, stars the “Hacks” breakout actress as the titular musician who goes home to win back her girlfriend only to realize it’s much more than her love life that needs salvaging.
Hannah Pearl Utt directs the comedy from a script by Rhianon Jones. The cast includes Jojo T. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, Chrissie Fit, Andre Hyland, Margaret Cho, Chelsea Peretti, and Darrell Hammond. The film features original music and a score composed by indie artist Miya Folick.
“I’m thrilled for audiences to get to see Meg in a leading role and to fall for her character the way I have,” director Utt said in a press statement.
The IndieWire review called Stalter a “whirlwind and a universe unto herself” who boasts “her unique brand of uncomfortably confident loser” onscreen.

When last we left Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg) on the HBO series "Barry," they were in great distress. (When has that ever not been true?) Barry and Sally have made a meager life for themselves and their son John (Zachary Golinger) in middle America for eight years, thanks to being in the FBI Witness Protection program after Barry revealed secrets of his time with the Chechen mob to get out of jail. They've reinvented themselves as Clark and Emily, a married couple that doesn't do much aside from home-schooling John, and working at a local diner. But Sally and Barry are both shocked to learn, via the Hollywood Reporter, that a) Warner Bros. is pursuing a biopic about Barry's life as a hitman/acting student and b) Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) has come out of hiding after having shot his son Leo (Andrew Leeds) to purportedly consult on the film.

After a string of shorts and music videos, writer-director Daniel Scheinert—along with his frequent collaborator Daniel Kwan—broke into feature films with Swiss Army Man. Casting Daniel Radcliffe as a farting corpse alongside Paul Dano’s depressed loner, the film carved out a slew of fans who were intrigued, repulsed, and delighted in equal measure.
Now, Scheinert has branched off on his own for The Death of Dick Long, a darker venture than his last. It’s one steeped in sadness and anxiety, despite, or perhaps, in part, because of, its close relationship to comedy. The result is a film that has viewers follow characters who are both reprehensible and highly relatable in equal measure, with the narrative around them weaving between buddy comedy, bumbling police procedural, and severe familial breakdown.

Easily one of the more surprising movies of Fantastic Fest was The Death of Dick Long, and that’s probably an understatement and a half. But considering the film’s director, Daniel Scheinert, is one-half of the filmmaking duo behind Swiss Army Man, maybe we should have expected something truly unpredictable, yet made with a huge amount of heart to it, which is exactly what Dick Long delivers (and so much more).
During our time in Austin, Daily Dead chatted with Scheinert about The Death of Dick Long, and why he loves telling such unusual stories with his films. The director also talked about not passing judgment on certain aspects of Dick Long’s narrative, instead exploring what it means to live in fear of people finding out your truth, and how powerful that can be, and the instant chemistry between the film’s co-stars Michael Abbott Jr. and Andre Hyland.

A cringe-worthy movie of Alabama backwater haplessness that could easily earn a promotional tie-in with the annual excellence-in-stupidity honors known as the Darwin Awards, “The Death of Dick Long” may be a made-up story, but inside this crisis management suspense-comedy is a weirdly down-to-earth humanity about the ripple effects of out-of-nowhere recklessness.
Native Alabamian Daniel Scheinert — one half of the directing duo the Daniels (with Daniel Kwan) — might have a tough time selling his home state’s citizens on what exactly he’s saying with screenwriter Billy Chew’s “Fargo”-esque yarn of one good ol’ boy’s very bad demise. But indie moviegoers looking for an off-road excursion likely to trigger more than a few exhortations of “oh no” — as both laughs and gasps — could turn this “Death” into something with cult life.

Where to begin here? Sometimes, a film can paint itself into a corner that it never quite gets out of. Such is the case with The Death of Dick Long, which opens this week and is hiding a hell of a reveal midway through. With no exaggeration, it’s one of the most unexpected moments in cinema this year. However, that’s the point where the tale begins to crumble, ultimately proving ever so slightly unworthy of the time investment. A boldly unique work, it sadly can’t quite stick the second half, preventing one from actually embracing it as audiences might otherwise have. The movie is a self proclaimed backwoods noir, one tinged with some black comedy. Zeke Olsen (Michael Abbott Jr.), Earl Wyeth (Andre Hyland), and Dick Long are buddies, who spend many a night practicing with their band. Or, at least they spend some portions of the evenings practicing,...

After filmmaking duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert launched their wacky debut “Swiss Army Man” at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, they went through the usual routine of fielding offers. The directors, who have gone by the collective moniker “Daniels” since their music video days, announced their surreal and playful style with the story of singing castaway (Paul Dano) and the farting corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) he befriends. That may not sound like the most commercial idea, but the film eventually grossed $5.8 million in release, along with rave reviews for blending outrageous toilet humor with poignant storytelling.
It also made them wary of studio properties that came their way. “My dad was so upset that we didn’t take the meeting for ‘Deadpool 2,’” Scheinert told IndieWire recently, and laughed. “I’m sure they took meetings with tons of people. But we were like, ‘We’re not right for that,’ and didn’t take the meeting.

We’ve got a red-band trailer to share with you today for a dark comedy called The Death of Dick Long and as you’ll see, things get crazy and weird!
The movie is being directed by Daniel Scheinert, co-director of Swiss Army Man, and if you’ve seen that movie, then you know you can expect this next film to be completely off the wall. I think it looks pretty funny, but you might have a different reaction to the trailer.
Here’s the synopsis:
Holy Crap. Dick is dead. Died last night after band practice, and his bandmates, Zeke & Earl, don’t want anybody finding out how. That’s too bad though, ‘cause news travels fast in small town Alabama, and these guys suck at covering their tracks. The authorities haven’t ID’d the body just yet, but Zeke’s wife (Virginia Newcomb) and his daughter are suspicious already.

"Did you hear about the murder?" A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for a wacky, hilarious, extra weird indie dark comedy called The Death of Dick Long. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to some divisive reviews, but that's what makes it so good. From director Daniel Scheinert (of Swiss Army Man), the film is about Zeke, played by Michael Abbott Jr., and Earl, played by Andre Hyland, two friends who are just too dumb to figure out how to cover up for their other friend's accidental death. The cast includes Virginia Newcomb, Sarah Baker, Jess Weixler, Sunita Mani, Roy Wood Jr., Poppi Cunningham, and Janelle Cochrane. It's some sort of wild, redneck dark comedy, that some will find hilarious, others will find too dumb. Up to you to decide? At least the poster is amazing. Have fun. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel...

Wayward characters have struggled to cover their crimes throughout film history, but the conundrum at the center of “The Death of Dick Long” is more abstract than that. In director Daniel Scheinert’s Alabama-set dark comedy, the aforementioned Dick dies for mysterious reasons in the opening scenes, leaving dopey pals Zeke (Michael Abbott Jr.) and Earl (Andre Hyland) stumbling through a series of comic misadventures to hide the circumstances of his demise.
The new trailer for the movie, which A24 releases on September 27, doesn’t spoil that twist — but it certainly captures the loopy pleasures of this oddball caper, which blends small-town Southern eccentricities with unusual emotional resonance. “Dick Long” premiered at Sundance’s Next section in January, where even audiences who expected something off-kilter didn’t quite know what they were in for. And that’s a testament to this singular movie’s sneaky appeal.

When it comes to indie filmmaking, few directors get as much mileage out of their limited budget than Joel Potrykus. Rooted in an often humorous, dark perspective, his work puts character first and his latest film, Relaxer, is perhaps the most ideal example of his inventive eye. Arriving in theaters in the director’s hometown of Grand Rapids today (and expanding to NYC and beyond starting next week), the film follows a couch-bound challenge taken to the extreme as Y2K approaches. We’re pleased to present an exclusive clip from the film, which features Joshua Burge getting a visit from Andre Hyland (who also steals the show in the Sundance hit The Death of Dick Long) as they discuss Jerry Maguire and present a challenge within a challenge.

Sitting on a couch playing video games can be a ton of fun. The experience, whether alone or with friends, has been a staple of adolescent and adult entertainment for over a generation now. Some look at it like the lark that it can be. Others, they see it as a detriment to society and part of humanity’s downfall. To some degree, that’s explored in Relaxer, an independent comedy hitting theaters this week. However, what’s more fully on display is a bizarre exercise in discomfort. It’s going to prove divisive for those who see it. This humble critic did not care for it one bit. In fact, it was an actively unpleasant experience. The movie is supposedly a comedy, set in the year 1999. With the impending potential Y2K apocalypse fast approaching, Abbie (Joshua Burge) is stuck on a couch, undergoing abuse from his older brother...

“All I’ve ever dreamed about is living on a couch, playing video games with no one bugging me. Relaxer is the nightmare version of my fantasy,” so says Joel Potrykus when it comes to his latest unsettling, yet riveting film. A fitting companion with his brilliant Buzzard, the Y2K-set feature stars Joshua Burge as he undertakes a challenge with grave consequences. Oscilloscope Pictures has now released the first trailer, which grabs a quote from our SXSW review.
John Fink said in our review, “While many indie filmmakers like Andrew Bujalski started making films in apartments with their friends and scaled up to larger projects, Michigan-based madman Joel Potrykus has gleefully and unapologetically scaled down as his career has progressed. His fourth outing, Relaxer, barely even takes place in an apartment, but rather in the corner of a living room where Abbie (Joshua Burge) is stuck on a couch for nearly six months.

"You do not leave this couch until the challenge is completed!" Oscilloscope Labs has debuted the trailer for a demented, wacky indie film titled Relaxer, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year. Relaxer is the latest work from American filmmaker Joel Potrykus, who has been making some super funky little films including Ape, Buzzard, and The Alchemist Cookbook. This one is just as funky as all of those: With the impending Y2K apocalypse fast approaching, Abbie is faced with the ultimate challenge - the unbeatable level 256 on Pac-Man - and he can't get off the couch until he conquers it. A survival story in a living room. Starring Joshua Burge, David Dastmalchian, Andre Hyland, Madi Bachman, & Amari Cheatom. This looks totally gross and ridiculous, but apparently "an unforgettable experience" according to one critic. Here's the first official trailer (+ crazy poster) for Joel Potrykus' Relaxer, direct from YouTube...

What do the Daniels do in between, well, being the Daniels? Daniel Scheinert, the self-proclaimed redneck half of the duo, answers this question with his solo project, The Death of Dick Long. This corpse-centric caper Set in Scheinert’s Alabama hometown, Dick Long follows two bumbling band-mates (Andre Hyland and Michael Abbott Jr.) as they fail miserably at covering up a friends’ death. Part Coen-brothers, part Dumb and Dumber, Billy Chew’s goofy script has a few major twists up its sleeve.
As Scheinert tells it, Dick Long is a homegrown film, made for therapeutic purposes: he needed some old fashioned R&R with friends & family.…...

When the directing duo known as Daniels brought Swiss Army Man to Sundance in 2016 they took audiences aback with their peculiarly original vision, involving fart-propelled, jet-skiing corpses and boner compasses. Daniel Scheinert, one-half of the directing team, has now returned with The Death of Dick Long, a more naturalistic but also funnier (and more disturbing) follow-up. A butt rock epic built on bad decisions with plenty of affectation for its idiotic characters, the deeply dark comedy does for small-town Alabama what Fargo did for Minnesota.
We’re introduced to Zeke, Earl (Andre Hyland), and Dick (Scheinert) at their weekly band practice, which quickly devolves into a night of beer-chugging, weed consumption, fireworks, and another activity which is best left unspoiled. On this particular night, something goes gravely wrong as we soon find Dick bleeding out in the back of Zeke’s station wagon for undisclosed reasons. Zeke and Earl lug...

For its first hour, “The Death of Dick Long” is a derivative and clunky black comedy that cribs from “Fargo” and trafficks in crass white-trash stereotypes, but that’s only part of a larger agenda. With the arrival of a kinky twist, the movie undercuts its lowbrow humor with real emotional stakes. The story of two close friends contending with the secret of their mutual buddy’s accidental death seems fairly straightforward — until it subverts expectations with gratifying results indicative of shrewd storytelling at work.
That’s no surprise given that “Dick Long” is the first solo directing credit for Daniel Scheinert, following his co-directing on “Swiss Army Man” (aka the “farting corpse movie”) that managed to turn its toilet gags into a surreal tone poem. “Dick Long,” which stems from Billy Chew’s script, lacks the same abstract weirdness that made “Swiss Army Man” such an indelible cinematic delight.

"I'm not ready to settle down." Vertical Entertainment has released the first trailer for an indie drama titled In a Relationship, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker and NYU graduate Sam Boyd. Long-term couple Owen & Hallie are breaking up (or maybe not?). Just as their relationship reaches a turning point, Matt & Willa embark on a romance of their own. The film stars Emma Roberts & Michael Angarano as the leads, with Patrick Gibson & Dree Hemingway as the new couple. "Boyd's multi-character romantic dramedy adroitly juxtaposes two relationships at the opposite stages of their lifespan as the foursome haphazardly traverses the uncharted territory of 20-something millennial love over the course of a summer in Los Angeles." Also starring Jay Ellis, Greta Lee, Janet Montgomery, & Andre Hyland. See below. Great cinema is sometimes grand themes, dramatic camerawork, and sophisticated montage; or, it’s a guy playing “Pac Man” for 90 minutes. Joel Potrykus’ “Relaxer,” the latest wacky gambit from the Michigan-based provocateur, finds the “Buzzard” director reteaming with his perennial star Joshua Burge, again taking a cartoonish lowbrow approach to acerbic social critique. Set on the eve of Y2K, “Relaxer” exclusively takes place in the confines of a living room, where Burge’s character endures prolonged attempts to reach an impossible high score on the the aforementioned video game, while enduring hardships that include milk vomit, fecal matter, overheated cartridges, and rat poison. It’s a grotesque downward spiral, both hilarious and mesmerizing, but above all elevated by its insights into the depraved final gasp of the analog age.

"Aw, sorry about your bike!" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The 4th, which actually premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year (not this year). The story is simple - a scruffy dude in La tries to throw a cookout for his friends during 4th of July. But on his way to the store, he gets into an accident and everything goes nuts, throwing his whole life into disarray. Co-starring Anna Lee Lawson, Yasmine Kittles, Dugan O'Neal, and Jeff Carpenter. Going into The 4th, I didn't know what to expect. I knew it was about a guy getting lighter fluid, but certainly there must be more than just that? Right? Kinda, but kinda not.
The film is directed by, written by, produced by, and stars Andre Hyland as a guy who forgot to pick up his lighter fluid for his Fourth of July party he is having and doesn't want to go back to the store to pick it up, because it's too long to walk back and too short to drive, especially because he has the perfect parking spot. So he borrows his roomate's bicycle and begins an epic journey of mediocrity and adventure. He meets up with assholes of all shapes and sizes, and eventually makes it home.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2015 discoveries”.
Andre Hyland: 1. Norman Gunston, funny and weird Australian talk show host from the 70′-90s that I discovered via youtube… the dude was ahead of his time. If you like Tom Green, Eric Andre…you’ll appreciate Gunston.
2. 2Wet Crew, my favorite youtube series…super funny! (full disclosure, I’m in a couple eps..but I’d love it even if I had no involvement).
3. The Dolly Parton Song “Jolene“.
Lavallee: Visual, situational, the mundane and the absurd, if we had to categorize your brand of humor based on your Sundance short Funnel we could say it’s a mix of all of the above. Was wondering for The 4th, how you move from inspiration into the writing – how does that process work.

Editor's Note: Andre Hyland's Sundance short "The Funnel" was a laugh out loud funny film that brought a fresh angle to the indie slacker comedy. That's why the character's return in "The 4th" has many very curious to see if triple hyphenate can sustain the same low-stakes, lo-fi comedy over 80 minutes. Hyland's approach certainly hasn't changed. "The 4th" started off as two-day short that would give him an opportunity to learn a new piece of editing software, but soon became a four-day shoot and a large chunk of the feature that will be premiering at Park City on Saturday night. As Hyland writes, "I knew once I finished the film I’d either have a low budget feature, a long short film, or a mess I could learn from." We asked Hyland to share with us his keep-on-making-stuff approach that's led him on a decade-long journey through a collection of comedic characters and styles,...

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.
