Writing a feature film is easy. All you need is one gimmicky logline, as cheap and single-serving-disposable as a coffee pod from the complimentary hotel room K-Cup spinner. Once you stumble upon one of these so-called “high concept” ideas, the script practically writes, sells and produces itself. It’s creative work for stupid babies, as all filmmakers will surely agree–totally unlike, in other words, the act of conceptualizing an entire episodic series, a demonstration of storytelling virtuosity so complex and adult it straddles the border between ancient Euclidean geometry and New Age witchcraft.
Okay, so maybe that’s a little extreme. But for aspiring series creators and showrunners, structuring a workable, potentially long-running television concept requires imagination and problem-solving on both the micro- and macro- levels–a mastery of tone, plot and characterization across variable interlocking units of temporal storytelling: scenes, dramatic acts, full episodes, multi-episode arcs and complete seasons.

Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.
Traditionally Film Independent’s Directors Close-Up series has been a little bit of all of the above, presenting behind-the-scenes insight into the year’s most important works of cinema, straight from the mouths and brains of filmmakers themselves. As the virtual portion of this year’s programming winds down (see below), we’re looking ahead now to our...

Exclusive: Sarayu Blue won her part starring alongside Nicole Kidman in Lulu Wang’s Prime Video limited series Expats at a time when she didn’t know if she “could lift the boulder back up the hill.”
In an interview with Breaking Baz, the Indian-American actress recalls how she had just gone through the jubilation of landing the lead role in Aseem Bahra’s NBC series I Feel Bad in 2018 and the devastation when it was cancelled after just one season. The episode had a real impact.
Landing the role in the Amy Poehler-executive produced comedy had been “an enormous thing,” says Blue, because it was a role that was ”never written Indian…. and I tested against three white women for it.” She instantly corrects herself by replacing the aggressive “against” with a softer “with.”

Exclusive: After seeing Searchlight Pictures release his acclaimed queer rom-com Fire Island via Hulu, Joel Kim Booster is back in business with the studio as the writer and producer of Again Again Again, a spec that it snapped up for development ahead of last year’s WGA strike.
Eyed as a potential starring vehicle for Booster, the film centers on Gus, who as the man of honor for his closest friend Maggie’s extravagant wedding weekend at a Napa winery, is tasked with making sure the whole event goes off without a hitch. But when Gus’s wildly charismatic but emotionally unstable boyfriend Hal shows up unexpectedly, chaos ensues and threatens to derail the wedding as well as their relationship.
Aboard to produce the pic alongside Booster are Local Time’s Lulu Wang and Daniele Tate Melia, the duo behind the hugely acclaimed family dramedy The Farewell, written and directed for A24 by Wang.

Exclusive: Executive Producer Dani Melia describes how “a scrappy team” that made filmmaker Lulu Wang’s acclaimed low-budget feature The Farewell joined forces with Blossom Films’ Nicole Kidman and Per Saari to make “this big international production” Expats for Prime Video.
Melia tells me how she and Wang had “long talked about wanting to continue working together” after making The Farewell.
Then, while they were promoting the movie in Australia, Kidman approached Wang about directing an adaptation of Janice Y.K. Lee’s book The Expatriates.
Wang was excited, and Melia recalls the director telling her: ”I need to find a way to do this with you and the rest of the crew who did The Farewell. I want my creative team onboard, and I think this should be our next thing.”
Melia says that quite a few creatives from The Farewell ended up making the leap with them.

Exclusive: M88 on Tuesday announced its signing of Andrew Lopez, a fast-rising multi-hyphenate who, with appearances on Apple TV+’s Platonic and FX’s The Bear, has made his mark on two of the most buzzy series in recent memory.
An accomplished writer, director, and stand-up currently enjoying a breakout moment on the acting front, Lopez found his most substantial role to date opposite Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne on Platonic, the comedy series from Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, which debuted on Apple’s streamer in May. The show centered on Rogen’s brewer Will and Byrne’s stay-at-home mother Sylvia — a pair of longtime friends reconnecting as adults, after some time apart — has Lopez playing Reggie, the brother of the former’s ex-wife, who butts heads with him as a co-investor in his bar.

Emilia Jones to Star in ‘Winner’ as Whistleblower Who Exposed Russia’s Interference in 2016 Election
“Coda” star Emilia Jones will portray whistleblower Reality Winner in “Winner,” a dark-comedy biopic from director Susanna Fogel.
Winner, a former U.S. Air Force member and Nsa contractor, served in prison after she leaked an intelligence report about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Picturestart has acquired the rights to the Mary H.K. Choi novel “Yolk” to adapt as a television series, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Yolk” is about two twenty-something Korean sisters in New York — Jayne and June. One has cancer, the other has health insurance, so they swap identities based on the oldest gag in the racism book: All Look Same. By “swap,” June means stealing her little sister’s identity without her knowing because they’re long estranged. And when Jayne finds out, she extorts her big sister for a room in her baller Manhattan apartment. Tit for tat. Of course, deep down they need each other, though they’d sooner die than admit this. And now June might really die, especially if Jayne flunks out of fashion school and loses “their” health insurance. As they struggle to understand each other, the one thing they can agree on? Mom and Dad...

Bright and early Monday morning, John Cho and Issa Rae unveiled the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards and when it came to Best Director, we all waited with bated breath to see if the Academy would follow this unfortunate trend of women being shut out of the category. One by one, Rae announced the nominees: “The Irishman, Martin Scorsese; Joker, Todd Phillips; 1917, Sam Mendes; Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino…” and finally…”Parasite, Bong Joon Ho”. After she listed the names she said “Congratulations to those men” — which pretty much says it all.
Now in its 92nd year, the Academy failed to recognized female directors after they were very absent at the Golden Globes. It was the same song at for the BAFTA Award nominations in the category and the DGA Awards had zero women in the Feature Film category. However, there was a silver lining at...

It is no secret that the Hollywood Foreign Press was put under fire for shutting out women in the Best Director category at this year’s Golden Globes. In fact, the amount of women, people of color and underrepresented voices were fairly thin across all categories. Deadline talked to female filmmakers, producers and even some men on the red carpet to get their feelings about the issue and what the film and TV industry needs to do to change the landscape.
“I think there is a real prejudice around what directing is as a craft,” said Lulu Wang, director of The Farewell, which is nominated for Best Foreign Film. “It’s seen as a technical craft and there’s a prejudice that men are technical and women are emotional. They’re happy to honor women in front of the camera but there is still this unexamined prejudice around seeing women as technical-oriented people.

Humanistic, life-affirming stories don’t sound like a Hollywood business plan, but for the last 15 years it’s worked for financier Big Beach. On paper, partners Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf produce titles that may not seem overtly commercial — but they have a knack for finding concepts that connect with audiences.
For 2019, they backed Lulu Wang’s 2019 Mandarin-language drama “The Farewell,” which is nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Golden Globe as well as Best Actress Musical or Comedy for frontrunner Awkwafina, as well as Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” which has Tom Hanks vying for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Fred Rogers.
“We have very specific taste,” said Turtletaub. “People want to see stories that touch their heart. That’s hard to define.”
These have ranged from “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006) and “Safety Not Guaranteed” (2012) to “The Purists,” a 2019 play that Billy Porter directed in Boston,...
