James Patterson, Margaret Atwood Among Thousands Of Writers Urging AI Companies To Honour Copyrights
James Patterson, Suzanne Collins and Margaret Atwood are among thousands of writers endorsing an open letter from the Authors Guild urging AI companies to obtain permission before incorporating copyrighted work into their technologies.
“Millions of copyrighted books, articles, essays, and poetry provide the ‘food’ for AI systems, endless meals for which there has been no bill,” the letter reads in part. “You’re spending billions of dollars to develop AI technology. It is only fair that you compensate us for using our writings, without which AI would be banal and extremely limited.”

The letter is addressed to OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft and other AI producers. The Guild announced Tuesday that other signers include the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelists Jennifer Egan, Michael Chabon and Louise Erdrich, as well as authors Jonathan Franzen, Celeste Ng, Nora Roberts and Ron Chernow.

Offstage, and sometimes on, David Mamet can be infuriating and exasperating, as anyone who has witnessed his recent nonsensical, offensive media blitz can attest, and then along comes something like American Buffalo – possibly his greatest work, all due apologies to Glengarry Glen Ross – with a cast so in sync with the playwright’s “profane poetry” that for a couple hours it’s not impossible to put aside whatever it is Mamet thinks needs saying on Fox News these days.
Superbly performed by Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss, with director (and longtime Mamet collaborator) Neil Pepe finding every comic beat and threatening glare, American Buffalo – opening tonight on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre – retains a vitality that eluded some recent equally starry revivals of works by Mamet’s bad-boy contemporaries.

Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, will serve as the entertainer at the next White House Correspondents’ Association dinner when it returns on April 30.
The event is scheduled to make its return after a two year absence, with the 2020 and 2021 dinners canceled due to Covid.
There is expectation that President Joe Biden will attend the event, as had been tradition until President Donald Trump skipped the dinner during the four years of his presidency. The Whca, in announcing Noah, noted that this year’s dinner “will be the Whca’s first since 2019 and offer the first opportunity since 2016 for the press and the president to share a few laughs for a good cause.”
Noah also will host the Grammys this year, and he is in the midst of a comedy tour, Back to Abnormal.

The White House Correspondents’ Association is planning for a return of its annual dinner in 2022, after Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the past two annual events.
The Whca dinner, designed to raise money for scholarships, has long been one of D.C.’s highest profile gatherings of Beltway insiders, media personalities and public officials. But breaking with tradition, Donald Trump did not attend any of the annual dinners held during his presidency. There’s some expectation that President Joe Biden will attend, as he has signaled a return to tradition of other D.C. events, like a meeting with Kennedy Center honorees.
The dinner in 2022 is scheduled for April 30 at the Washington Hilton. The Whca is requiring that all guests and dinner staff be vaccinated, according to a memo sent to members by Whca president Steve Portnoy.

There’s no space for bad feelings as Miranda’s exuberant and innocent Broadway hit transfers to the screen
There’s a sentimental kind of exuberance and more than two solid hours of dancing in the streets in this boisterous, if earnest, movie-musical version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit from 2008.
It is a sweet-natured film with Sunny-d optimism and a no-place-like-home ethic; in a pleasant way, it felt like a feature-length version of that moment in Fame when all the kids start dancing and singing around the yellow cab outside New York’s High School of Performing Arts. You might also compare it to West Side Story, soon to be revived by Steven Spielberg. But this is a world of all jets and no sharks, or all sharks and no jets. There is no serious conflict here, and the quarrels, family rows and lovers’ tiffs disappear very quickly.

Bridgerton is a unique mix of Shonda Rhimes’ dedication to Black representation on American television and the British period drama tradition. White critics may dismiss this trend as unnecessary “pandering” to Black and Poc viewers, but the number of productions designed around reforming all white-casting has increased over the past 10 years—and has only added to the success of the genre. The number one reason driving demand for diverse period dramas is from Black and Poc fans of the genre. The impact of seeing an actor that looks like you can’t be measured in ratings or clicks online. Despite facing years of content and fandom overtly or covertly claiming that the universal themes in period dramas are not “for us”; the tide is starting to turn as fans use social media and the power of ratings to ask for more representation.

Since arriving on Disney Plus, Hamilton has been receiving a lot of praise, as well as some feedback that the musical obscures historical issues over slavery. Lin-Manuel Miranda has also already addressed the topic and has been open about the flaws in the production and its relationship to history. Now, he’s commented that ensuring historical accuracy was never his intention.
Miranda’s thoughts on the story have been touched on in the new Disney Plus behind-the-scenes special, which arrived this weekend. More specifically, he addresses the difficulty of including everything he wanted to in the musical, explaining as so:
“I get tweets every day from young people who say, ‘But what about this?’ Or, ‘It’s John Laurens’s birthday, why haven’t you said anything yet?’ And so, all the things I could not fit in the two and a half hours I have of your time, it...

Hamilton — the musical phenomenon set to premiere July 3 on Disney+ — began, humbly enough, in a hammock. That's where Lin-Manuel Miranda was lounging on a 2008 jaunt to Mexico, engrossed in Ron Chernow's 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton.
Sensing that the story of the first treasury secretary would lend itself to a musical, Miranda, then 28, started work on "The Hamilton Mixtape" — a loose collection of hip-hop verses and melodies. The project only came to life, however, in the White House. In May 2009, then-President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama invited Miranda over for "...

You wouldn't think that a musical about American history would be so captivating and cool, but Lin-Manuel Miranda managed to do just that. Ever since Hamilton premiered on Broadway in 2015, it has become a smash hit, both on stage and now with a new film on Disney+. While the show is rich with interesting storytelling and historical facts, we can't help but wonder: why did Miranda choose to write a musical about Alexander Hamilton of all people? Well, it all started with a book.
"I knew about as much as anyone did about Alexander Hamilton, before I picked up Ron Chernow's incredible biography," Miranda told CNBC in December 2017. "I knew that he was on our $10 bill in the States and I knew that he died in a duel. You know you learn that in high school and that was about it. And that was enough for me to pick...

It was mid-October 1796 when Alexander Hamilton released the first in a string of scathing essays about political opponent Thomas Jefferson. By this point in early United States history, George Washington had announced his retirement, refusing to seek a third term as president, and the race of self-styled great men hoping to take his place was on… with none more loathsome to Hamilton than Jefferson, the loquacious, if remote, thinker on a hill in Virginia.
In this first of 25 essays, Hamilton wrote under the nom de plume of Phocion about the many hypocrisies of Jefferson, depicting the supposed philosopher as a moral and intellectual fraud, and something worse: a slave owner who knew slavery was evil but still took advantage, perhaps even of a sexual nature, of the Black people he kept in bondage.

No, it’s not really a “movie” in the sense of an all-out, bells-and-whistles Hollywood extravaganza. The Hamilton that debuts on Disney+ starting July 3rd is a live-performance film of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ground-breaking, history-making Broadway musical that told the story of Alexander Hamilton (“the ten-dollar Founding Father”) in an electrifying, hip-hop style. It’s an indisputable classic. Even folks who never got to see the show when it first opened on Broadway have heard the score that went six-times platinum and became the best-selling cast album of all time.

The lights may be out over Broadway tonight, and for the foreseeable future, but the most beloved American musical of the last decade is about to have its biggest premiere yet: inside your living room! And Disney wants you to know about it.
In what amounted to a major win for Disney’s young streaming service, it was announced earlier this year that a filmed performance of Hamilton’s Original Broadway Cast would not wait until its October 2021 theatrical release date to be screened: it’d go to Disney+ in time for the Fourth of July weekend. This was a major shift of gears for the Mouse House and a signal that they are thinking the current coronavirus pandemic is far from over. It is also something Disney+ needed given the absence of original content—a fact the coronavirus is only exacerbating by delaying all film and TV production.

The Memorial Day premiere of the six-hour miniseries, which airs over three consecutive nights, drew 3 million total viewers for its first installment, marking the network’s best non-fiction miniseries launch in Total Viewers in six years, and the No. 2 miniseries launch of the year in all of cable behind ESPN’s The Last Dance, according to Nielsen Media Research. Grant also delivered in key demos, drawing 581,000 in Adults 25-54, and 439,000 in Adults 18-49.
Grant, praised by Deadline’s Dominic Patten in The Show To Watch This Week, chronicles the life of one of the most complex and underappreciated generals and presidents in U.S. history – Ulysses S. Grant. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Chernow and produced by RadicalMedia and Lionsgate Television, Grant is executive produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson. Phillip Watson serves as co-executive producer.

Your July calendar has just been filled. Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced today that the filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton will be premiering on Disney+ on July 3rd. Yes, that is just in time for American Independence Day. And, yes, this is the only acceptable way to celebrate the holiday this year.
Disney is “fast-tracking” the premiere, which was scheduled to be a theatrical release in October 2021. No doubt the “social distancing” measures brought about by the global Covid-19 pandemic has changed the original plan, as it has done for so many things. It’s nice to have things to look forward to.
It’s only a matter of time…

For those who don’t know much about the stage musical, Hamilton is the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

History is doubling down on Presidential programming with two new miniseries centered on Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.
Lincoln (working title) and Theodore Roosevelt (working title) are both exec produced by Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, while Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way Productions company are involved in the latter.
Lincoln is a three-part series, featuring two-hour episodes, that will be a multi-layered biography of the 16th President. From Lincoln’s impoverished childhood to his days as a young prairie lawyer and budding politician, through his unlikely election to the presidency and eventual assassination, the miniseries will feature live action scripted sequences, expert interviews and a rich historical archive of rare photographs, prints, and original documents.
It is produced by Nutopia with Jane Root and Ben Goold serving as executive producers alongside Goodwin and Beth Laski for Pastimes Productions. Eli Lehrer, Mary E. Donahue and Jennifer Wagman are executive producers for History.

Ulysses S. Grant’s place in American history is secured – but also a bit misunderstood. Be it his reported alcoholism, his exploits on the battlefield during the Civil War, or his less-than-stellar presidency, Grant’s life is often overlooked by many. Ron Chernow’s phonebook-thick biography sought to change that, and now here comes the History Channel’s three-night […]

The White House Correspondents’ Association has rescheduled its annual dinner for August 29, with Kenan Thompson and Hasan Minhaj set to perform on the new date.

The White House Correspondents’ Association is returning to a lineup of comedians for its annual dinner: Kenan Thompson will host and Hasan Minhaj will be the featured entertainer.
The annual D.C. event, to be held on April 25, also has partnered with Bob Bain Productions, which has produced events such as the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Teen Choice Awards, the Creative Arts Emmys, the Miss America pageant and Trevor Noah’s stand-up specials.
The Whca last year went without a comedian — after years of tradition — and instead chose Ron Chernow, the historian, who delivered a humorous and insightful speech that put the Trump presidency in context. The choice was motivated in part by complaints over the dinner’s entertainer in 2018, Michelle Wolf, who delivered a blistering series of jokes directed at President Donald Trump and members of his administration, some of whom were present.

They’re trying to laugh again at the White House Correspondents Association annual dinner.
Long-running “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kenan Thompson will host the event, while comedian Hasan Minaj will be the featured entertainer for the evening, which has often served as a spotlight on relations between the media and the White House.
Last year, in the wake of scrutiny on the annual gathering often referred to as the “nerd prom,” the Whca turned toward education, rather than jubilation. Historian Ron Chernow discussed the history of journalism and the First Amendment – a twist for a gala that has often used comedic remarks from Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and Larry Wilmore to get attention. Michele Wolf sparked controversy in 2018 with some jokes that took aim at former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Historian and “Hamilton” author Ron Chernow took careful aim at President Donald Trump during Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, attacking Potus with a mix of history and humor.
“The thing that worries me most is the sustained assault on truth,” Chernow said, of the “relentless campaign against the very credibility of the news media” in which Trump, who boycotted the dinner for a third year, has engaged.
“Our precious republic feels fragile,” Chernow said, noting that, in the wake of the latest synagogue mass shooting that happened just hours before he spoke, “our civil society feels fragile as well. I shudder at the sheer savagery to which Washington politics has descended.”
“We are being tested, fiercely tested, but I like to think decency will prevail,” Chernow said.

Historian Ron Chernow offered a robust defense of the news media and the First Amendment at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner on Saturday evening, and called out what he said was a “relentless campaign” against the press.
“The thing that worries me most is the sustained assault on truth,” the “Hamilton” author said towards the end of a lengthy monologue at the black-tie event at the Washington Hilton. “What is happening today is even more insidious, a relentless campaign against the very credibility of the news media.”
“You combat the mistrust of a significant portion of the American electorate,” he said at another point. “A rising ride of misinformation masquerading as news threatens to make a mockery of the First Amendment. There are so many journalistic fakes and forgeries out there.”

When the White House Correspondents' Association announced that they would not have a comedian host its 2019 dinner, I was skeptical. It seemed an act of cowardice, bowing down to a president who's too thin-skinned to take a joke at his expense and has declared the press to be an "enemy of the people." The organization's choice of featured speaker, Ron Chernow, the author of such esteemed biographies as Alexander Hamilton and Grant, seemed a mistake as well. He's a great historian, sure, but could he really bring the laughs?

President Donald Trump will be in Wisconsin tonight hosting a rally, but a few miles to the east, the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner is being held, starting at 9:30 Pm Et/6:30 Pt.
It’s the third year in a row Trump has skipped the festivities, which traditionally used to mark an uneasy truce in the adversarial relationship of politics and media. That changed when Trump took office, and hit rock bottom in 2018, when comedian Michelle Wolf delivered a presentation that was roundly criticized for its crude language and vulgarity.
The dinner also has drawn fire for its Hollywood treatment of people who should be serving the public instead of their own egos, particularly since the dinner is intended to honor scholarship winners and fund journalism awards.

Trump told reporters Friday on the South Lawn when asked about attending that he would counterprogram the event with a political rally as he’s done in the past.
“Yeah, because the dinner is so boring and so negative that we’re going to hold a very positive rally,” he said, according to pool reports. “And we haven’t determined — we have about three sites. Everybody wants it. It’ll be a big one. But the correspondents’ dinner is too negative. I like positive things.”

The White House Correspondents Association will honor Fox News reporter Ed Henry with its Merriman Smith Award for broadcast. The honor was given in recognition of Henry’s tough interview with former Epa administrator Scott Pruitt last April.
“Epa Administrator Scott Pruitt was already in trouble over ethical matters when he sat down for an interview with Fox News White House Correspondent Ed Henry,” the judges said in an announcement. “If he thought he was going to get softball questions, he soon learned otherwise. Henry, in the words of the Washington Post, lobbed question after question at Pruitt to ask him about big pay increases for cronies and a sweetheart deal for renting an apartment from a lobbyist.”
“Pruitt struggled to answer and soon found himself out of a job,” they continued. “Henry was prepared, knew his facts and marshaled them for a penetrating interview, which made news, all under deadline pressure.
