Tracy Letts directing your attention to Greta Gerwig at the Lady Bird premiere at Tiff
As a father, few things bring me greater joy onscreen than portrayals of loving, supportive fathers. Tracy Letts’ performance in Lady Bird is my favorite on-screen dad in years and years (though we'll get to other fine portrayals of onscreen dads of 2017 in a later post).
Letts plays Larry McPherson, the patriarch of Lady Bird’s clan. He is shrouded in a bushy beard and balding head which characterizes him in his late 50s/early 60s. In reality, he’s only 52. At 6’3”, he towers over every character. Despite his frame, Larry is nothing but heart and warmth...

a performance that will be erased -- Kevin Spacey in "All the Money in the World"
On Wednesday night, I was talking to my wife about All the Money in the World. The upcoming thriller from director Ridley Scott features the true story of billionaire J. Paul Getty and his involvement with the kidnappers of his grandson. I brought it up because (alleged) serial sexual harasser Kevin Spacey was set to play Getty.
My discussion focused on how unfair it was to Scott, stars Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg, and especially young Charlie Plummer, who is poised for a breakout role as the aforementioned kidnapped grandson. Just because Spacey is a terrible human doesn’t mean the people involved in a production should suffer.
The backlash from Spacey’s allegations was swift...

Everything does not have to be filet mignon. Sometimes, you just want a hamburger. There is nothing wrong with a burger, and it can be really well made. There’s a difference between the two and burgers will not be any good if you expect them to be filet mignon.
The new film from director S. Craig Zahler, Brawl in Cell Block 99, is a great burger. And like any great burger, there are so many chances for it to go very wrong, very quickly...

Keil Gilchrist headlines "Atypical" as Sam, a teenager on the spectrum.
Full disclosure: I am not objective.
Generally, a reviewer would attempt an unbiased look at how a piece of entertainment could appeal to the masses. We all know this is not the case in reality. Everyone comes in with their own experiences and assumptions, which we base our opinions on. I want you all to know that I did not review Netflix’s new series Atypical without my own preconceived notions.
My son has autism. I have been wavering on whether I wanted to give Atypical a chance. It could go the This is Us route and over-sentimentalize everything, or it could go down the I Am Sam road and make everything offensively “special”. There is a delicate balance with shows that deal with disabilities. On top of that, I know a whole lot about...

If you haven’t heard already, Netflix will continue their quest for world domination with a tentpole feature film, Bright, in December. Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Fury), the film stars Will Smith as a Los Angeles police officer who is teamed up with an orc cop (Joel Edgerton) to fight crime and try to make sense of whatever the hell is happening in the trailer. There are fairies, magic wands, elves, swords, Noomi Rapace, and all sorts of other fantastical elements involved.
Let’s talk money. Bright cost $90 million for Netflix to pick up. Half of that cost went in to the film to shoot, while the other half goes to the talent (mostly Smith, Ayer and screenwriter Max Landis). These days, $90 million seems pretty reasonable for a fantasy film starring an A-List “Movie Star”. Suicide Squad, the most recent Smith-Ayer fantasy foray, cost $175 million.

We're sharing our dream Emmy nominations as balloting is in progress. Here's Ben Miller...
TV creator Noah Hawley broke onto the scene quickly with the first season of Fargo. After delivering a stellar superior second season, he was given the freedom to develop whatever he wanted at FX. Born from that freedom was Legion. Borrowing from its X-Men source material, Legion crafted its own little niche in prestige television. No other series, save The Leftovers, was weirder and more divisive in its execution.
Legion follows David (Dan Stevens), a mutant with telepathic abilities stuck in an insane asylum who finds love and conspiracy as he discovers he might (or might not) be insane. His best friend in the asylum is Lenny, played by Aubrey Plaza. Following a series of mind-bending events, Lenny is killed. This isn’t much of a spoiler as it happens in the first episode.

Many outlets are reporting the news that director Zack Snyder is stepping down from directing the upcoming Justice League in order to be with his family following the suicide of his daughter, Autumn, in March. This news has unfortunately prompted some insensitive reactions online. This brings to light an interesting separation between the artist and the art they create.
Snyder has his fair amount of detractors. I was impressed by his debut with Dawn of the Dead and got caught up in the zeitgeist that was 300. But, I have been less than thrilled with his contributions to the superhero genre in Watchmen, Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
This has birthed a persona of the man – Zack Snyder, director. His personal life and character has been shielded by a believed persona of what we feel this man is like, just because of the films he makes.

David Tennant and Rosamund Pike play the put-upon parents of three kids in this feature-format development of Outnumbered
It’s impossible not to enjoy this big-hearted and sweet-natured British family movie from Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin – effectively a feature-format development of their smash-hit BBC TV comedy, Outnumbered, which pioneered semi-improvised dialogue from the children. It creates a terrifically ambitious (and unexpected) narrative with a tonne of sharp gags. I would have liked to see Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner reprise their roles as the mum and dad, but because we have all seen their fictional children grow up on the small screen that is not really feasible. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike are Doug and Abi, the troubled parents of three boisterous kids: they’re heading up to Scotland for the 75th birthday of Doug’s unwell dad, Gordy (Billy Connolly), which means staying with Doug’s uptight brother,...
Well I think everyone can agree that we certainly needed that. After one episode of him possibly getting a bit murder-y and another of his hatred being enough to turn a Dalek into Space Judas, Robot Of Sherwood finally gives the Twelfth Doctor some levity. And Peter Capaldi the chance to show off his comedy chops without turning the air blue.
Mark Gatiss pulls off a hat trick of strong scripts after last year’s The Crimson Horror and the 50th Anniversary biopic An Adventure In Space And Time with an episode that does what Doctor Who often avoids for fear of failing: an episode deliberately weighted towards comedy. And this time it succeeds on pretty much every level. It also really invokes the feeling of Classic Who with references to old episodes flung about as often as arrows, a visual homage to State Of Decay (1980) at the climax,...

When I first got into Doctor Who (only a few years ago), part of the appeal for me was that it had a kind of Quantum Leap deal as far as the main character’s control of where he’d wind up in many episodes. He would try to go to one place and time, but he and his companion would land in another, as if the Tardis was taking them somewhere and somewhen more important to put right what once went wrong. It’s not as fun when, say, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) gets to pick a destination and they actually get there. But this week’s installment, “Robot of Sherwood,” worked for me anyway because of a new twist on the idea. The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) doesn’t expect to land where/when they do because he thinks it isn’t real. Or at least he doesn’t think the real place and time is...

When writing reviews I like to go on my initial thoughts and work from there. Lately there has been a lot of criticism about the direction the show is going and I’ll admit that there are issues that fans (including me) have a right to complain about. What this can’t get in the way of though is the basic question, did you actually enjoy this week’s episode? That is the question I have to answer for Robot of Sherwood.
When Clara (Jenna Coleman) is given the choice of where to travel to she decides she wants to visit Sherwood Forest in the time of Robin Hood. The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) scoffs at the very idea that she thinks Robin (Tom Riley) even exists, so to prove her wrong he agrees to take her to prove a point. As they arrive in the forest they are welcomed by...

This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
8.3 Robot Of Sherwood
"And do people ever punch you in the face?"
Three weeks into Peter Capaldi’s reign, and he gets an episode that’s more playful, dafter and – well – just plain funny.
When it was announced that Doctor Who was doing a Robin Hood episode, there was a suspicion that the character would be treated with a degree of seriousness, a bit of reverence, and one of those moments where it’s seen that the Doctor was responsible for some momentous piece of British history. You’ll be telling us he could have stopped the Great Fire Of London at this rate... *

Following the recent deaths of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, footage from this week's episode "Doctor Who" has been removed by the BBC.
The BBC reports that the sequence involved a character being beheaded, the scene in question is a fight scene between Robin Hood (Tom Riley) and the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Miller).
A spokesman says: "In light of recent news events, we have made an edit to episode three out of respect." The episode, which was filmed in February, airs later tonight in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
The removal follows recent video footage released online of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff being beheaded by militants.
This also follows an awkward PR event earlier this week in which promotion for the second season of Fox's "Sleepy Hollow" called for a 'Headless Day' - just hours before news of the second journalist's death hit the airwaves.

“No damsels in distress! No pretty castles! No such thing as Robin Hood!”
So says Peter Capaldi’s know-it-all Time Lord in the trailer for Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who, “Robot of Sherwood.” So how come Da Vinci’s Demons star Tom Riley is playing the British legend in the show? Vic Reeves, David Mitchell and Sue Perkins are to feature in the new series of Dave's Crackanory.
The part live-action, part-animated show sees celebrities narrating adult versions of bedtime stories in the style of the children's classic Jackanory, which first came to TV screens in 1965.
The second series could also feature a story told by Rik Mayall, who recorded an episode before he passed away last month.
Dave bosses previously explained that they were carefully considering when to schedule the episode in question, with general manager Steve North calling it a "complete privilege" to work with Mayall.
The new run will also include appearances from Katherine Parkinson, Meera Syal, Warwick Davies, Ben Miller, Johnny Vegas, Ruby Wax, Emilia Fox and Simon Callow.
The show's first series featured the likes of Harry Enfield, Jack Dee, Sally Phillips and Richard Hammond.
