“Welcome to The Daily Show, my name is Jon Stewart.”
The comedian kicked off his return to the Comedy Central and he’s jazzed.
“Now where was I? I’m excited to be back. Why am I back, you may be asking yourselves, it’s a very reasonable question. I have committed a lot of crimes and from what I understand, talk show hosts are granted immunity. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but take it up with the founders,” he added.
Stewart was returning to the franchise that he turned around, ostensibly replacing Trevor Noah, who left over a year ago, with a few celebrity guest hosts helping out in between.
He kicked off the show as he always used to, with some good-natured political ribbing. He also managed to get another jibe at Apple, which canceled his previous show The Problem with Jon Stewart because of...

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 76th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by three-time winner Bill Hader and installments of the third and final season of HBO’s “Succession,” which claimed four of the five Drama Series nomination slots – the fifth going to an episode of fellow HBO hour “The Last of Us.”
The Comedy Series nomination lineup features the directors of a pair of episodes of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” along with two installments of FX’s “The Bear” (including a repeat nomination for showrunner Christopher Storer – the acclaimed “Fishes” edition from Season 2 of the series – and a first for comedian and actor Ramy Youssef).

Leslie Jones and Sarah Silverman are each being given a second week of guest hosting duties on Comedy Central’s still-without-a-permanent-host “The Daily Show,” which has been going with a lineup of guests to preside when not impacted by the now-settled writers strike. Jones took the hosting reins in January, the first week after the show returned to the air following Trevor Noah’s departure. (Noah’s final episode aired December 8 of last year.) Jones is hosting the week of November 13, while Silverman – who hosted for a week in February – returns for her second guest host go-around on November 6.
Jones is said to be on the Paramount shortlist of contenders to land the “Daily Show” job full-time, along with late-night talk show vet Chelsea Handler and Hasan Minhaj, the host of this year’s Independent Spirit Awards. A permanent host is expected to join the show in 2024, specific date unknown.

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The ceremony honored outstanding achievement in both film and television directing, and the former category is often seen as predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Four of the five Best Director nominees competed in the Feature Film category tonight: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Todd Field (“TÁR”), and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund is not nominated, with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski taking his place.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have been named the best theatrical-film directors of 2022 for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” by the Directors Guild of America, which presented its 75th annual DGA Awards on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.
The two directors, who go by the name The Daniels, won for the freewheeling film, topping Steven Spielberg for “The Fabelmans,” Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Todd Field for “Tar” and Joseph Kosinski for “Top Gun: Maverick.” They are only the third directing team to win the DGA Award, after the Coen brothers for “No Country for Old Men” and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for “West Side Story.”
Spielberg, who is both the most-nominated and winningest film director in DGA history with 13 nominations and three wins, was the sentimental favorite going into the show, but “Everything Everywhere” has proven to be a surprisingly potent awards contender. The DGA win...

In his fourth time at the podium in the last six years, “This is 40” and “Knocked Up” director Judd Apatow will preside over the 75th Annual DGA Awards, often seen as the belwether for deciding who is favored to win the best director Oscar. The awards, which will take place on February 18, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, will honor the best in film, TV, commercials and documentaries, however, there has already been some blowback about the lack of women represented among this year’s titles.
In a statement, DGA Chair Beth McCarthy-Miller said she’s “thrilled that we landed Judd for this special anniversary DGA Awards show 75 years in the making. 2022, we aren't quite done with you yet. Award season has officially rolled into town, meaning it's time to reflect on the highest highs of last year as the industry awards (or snubs) some of the most beloved titles across film and TV. The latest awards lineup comes courtesy of the Directors Guild of America, which today announced the nominees across seven television categories.
Last year, the DGA television awards were largely dominated by "Succession" — as was every other TV-based awards show. But in its absence, both new and old titles have stepped up to vie for the spotlight. For drama series, the nominations went to Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Vince Gilligan, ("Better Call Saul"), Sam Levinson, ("Euphoria"), Aoife McArdle ("Severance"), and Ben Stiller ("Severance").
Elsewhere, the DGAs are rightfully recognizing two of last year's best half-hours of television: the intense single-shot episode of "The Bear" and the impeccable sixth episode of "Barry" season 3. Hilariously,...

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with several new series, including “Wednesday,” “Severance,” and “The Bear” receiving nominations alongside returning series such as “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul” and “The White Lotus”
At last year’s DGA television awards, “Succession” dominated the drama series category with all five of the nominees. This year, with that HBO series on hiatus, the nominees went to Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Vince Gilligan (“Better Call Saul”), Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and Aoiff McArdle and Ben Stiller for two separate episodes of “Severance.”
In the comedy series category, Tim Burton scored his first ever career DGA nomination, for “Wednesday.” Burton was joined by Bill Hader (“Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (“The Bear”), and Mike White (“The White Lotus”).

Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would is a stand-up comedy special directed by David Paul Meyer.
Filmed in Toronto, Trevor Noah’s stand-up special covers a broad catalogue of topics from learning German, traveling to Switzerland, speaking ill of the dead, horror movies, the lockdown, traveling to Canada, and ordering Indian food in Scotland.
About ‘I Wish You Would’
For an hour and half Noah is nothing short of hilarious. His intro is spectacular, recounting his effort to learn German to impress his father, and in his enthusiasm about practicing Deutsch ended up scaring a shop clerk who exclaimed, “Der Schwarze Hitler!” fearful of his intonation. Schadenfreude, horror movies, the pandemic, how Africa handled the pandemic better than any other continents, conspiracy theories, the wishes granted under Covid lockdown, it goes on, there is plenty of material covered, and good jokes made. He is a master of comedy and imitation...

Barack Obama will appear as a guest on the Nov. 17 episode of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Variety has learned exclusively. The episode airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m.
In conversation with Noah, the former president will discuss the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum and critical issues facing America and the world today. The interview will be Obama’s third with Noah, and his first in-studio. He previously appeared in a 2020 virtually taped episode, and did one of his final interviews as president with Noah at the White House.
The interview comes the week after the midterm elections that won the Republican party control of the House of Representatives — ending two years headed by the Democrats — and just days after Obama’s successor, the twice impeached Donald Trump, announced his bid to return to the White House in 2024.

To coincide with midterm elections, Trevor Noah will be hosting the show from the Tabernacle in Atlanta with a live audience from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3. The segments will include on-the-ground election coverage, which has become a staple at “The Daily Show.”

“The Daily Show” is hitting the road for midterms again. This fall, host Trevor Noah will take his Comedy Central late-night series to battleground territory in Atlanta, Ga.
While on-the-ground election coverage is nothing new for “The Daily Show,” which has previously moved to Ohio and Florida for midterms, the decision to head to Georgia for the first time is “highlighting key races and broader voting issues,” per the Paramount show. This also marks the show’s first time back on the road in a while, having just returned to its own home studio in New York City back in April following two years of doing the show remotely amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Noah will be recording full “Daily Show” shows from the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta leading up to election night to cap off the late-night talker’s “Votedemic 2022” midterm election coverage. Episodes are set to air nightly from Oct.

The two originally met when Meyer traveled to South Africa as a film student to film his master’s thesis about the budding comedy scene in Africa. “From being a film school student to being the director of a show. And from Trevor Noah being a standup comic in South Africa to being one of the most powerful voices in social and cultural commentary in the U.S. Quite a journey.” We talked to Meyer as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. This weekend is a big one for Oscar watchers, with two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. Sunday marks the biggest night of the year in British film, with the BAFTAs, whose winners often mirror those of the Oscars, taking place. But first, the biggest names in directing came out for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Judd Apatow returned to host the DGAs, which honor outstanding achievement in directing film, television, and commercials.
The feature film nominees at the DGAs were almost identical to the Best Director nominees at the Oscars, with winner Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) competing against Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”. The only difference is that the DGAs swapped in Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”).

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with “Succession” sweeping the drama-series category by landing all five nominations for different episodes.
The last time a single series swept all the nominations in the category was 1983, when “Hill Street Blues” took every slot in a category that at the time only consisted of three nominations. No program, drama or comedy, has ever swept all five nominations in a DGA Awards series category.
In the comedy series category, “Ted Lasso” took three of the five slots, with “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” taking the remaining two.
In the category devoted for TV movies and limited series, the nominees were Barry Jenkins for “The Underground Railroad,” Barry Levinson and Danny Strong for separate episodes of “Dopesick,” Hiro Murai for “Station Eleven” and Craig Zobel for “Mare of Easttown.”

“‘The Daily Show’ has always prided itself on having to adapt … You can’t really plan for this thing, but it wouldn’t be fun if you could,” says Jordan Klepper about his work covering Trump rallies for the Comedy Central series even after the Covid-19 pandemic struck. His segments, along with previously unaired footage, were collected into a variety special, “Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse: Into the Maga-Verse.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Klepper above.
“Into the Maga-Verse” finds Klepper interviewing a wide variety of Trump supporters throughout the 2020 presidential campaign. He was even there in Washington DC on January 6 when a rally to stop the certification of Trump’s election loss led the crowd to invade the Capitol in an attempted insurrection. Klepper and his crew were already being protected by security guards well before that day’s siege, so the potential for violence wasn’t far from their minds.

“I had a mentor who always told me that creative opportunities are born out of restrictions, so we certainly had that happen,” says “The Daily Show” director David Paul Meyer about the challenges he has faced since the Covid-19 pandemic. The entire TV industry has had to find a new equilibrium due to the public health crisis, and we discussed the ups and downs with Meyer and his fellow directors Susanne Bier (“The Undoing”), Lisa France (“Queen Sugar”), Kenny Leon (“Mahalia”), and Michelle MacLaren (“Coyote”) as part of our “Meet the Experts” series. Watch our group discussion above. You can also click on each name above to watch that person’s individual panel interview.

“We go from a TV studio with a control room where you can broadcast live if you want to, to where we’re using iPhones to make television,” says director David Paul Meyer about transitioning from “The Daily Show” to “The Daily Social Distancing Show” due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He discussed his work with us as part of our Emmy “Meet the Experts” directors panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Those iPhones have proved pretty good for TV production, “and it’s not just because Apple gives me free stuff. I’m actually hoping I can utilize this panel to get me free Apple things,” Meyer jokes. After a year of making the show remotely, they’ve expanded the possibilities of what they’re able to achieve outside of the studio.
