In the game of “Survivor,” the goal is to outwit, outplay and outlast the competition, but sometimes real-life troubles get in the way that lead to dramatic medical evacuations. As of this writing, a whopping 19 castaways have been removed due to health emergencies — 18 men and only one woman (Kourtney Moon). Tour our photos above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the “Survivor” medevacs/medical evacuations throughout the show’s run. Which ones were the scariest to watch on TV? Which ones do you remember vividly?

Among the bruises, blunders and baffling decisions that filled the 2-hour premiere of “Survivor 44” on Wednesday night was the disheartening medical evacuation of 46-year old Bruce Perreault. It is never easy to see a player to leave the game for any reason other than being voted out, but Bruce’s exit stands out as especially frustrating because his fate was sealed literally minutes in to the start of the game. Luckily, Jeff Probst and the “Survivor” producers vowed this week to bring him back for a future season.
Jeff announced the decision Wednesday night on his new behind-the-scenes podcast, “On Fire with Jeff Probst.” In speaking on the vow, Jeff acknowledged what the players give up from their lives in order to journey to Fiji to compete and that he doesn’t think Bruce “got his fair share.” He went on to say that it was an easy call, and...

Survivor is one of the most dangerous reality competition shows on television. The series features castaways stranded on an island exposed to the elements with limited resources. So, over the show’s 43 seasons, there have been 16 instances when producers had to pull contestants from the game due to injury, infection, or some other medical issue. And we’ve compiled the five most frightening medical evacuations in Survivor on CBS.

The first season of Survivor featured no medical evacuations. However, the CBS reality competition show’s second installment included the first medevac in the series’ history.
Michael Skupin was the (self-proclaimed) leader of the Kucha tribe in Survivor: The Australian Outback. He fished and provided food for his tribemates.

Get ready for one of the scariest seasons of “Survivor” ever. Host Jeff Probst recently teased the new season by stating, “‘Survivor 41’ is like the monster in a horror movie and if you’re a player, it’s coming for you. So either you devour the monster, or the monster will devour you.” CBS’s reality TV show returns to the airwaves on Wednesday, September 22, after a historic 16-month hiatus brought about because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Watch Probst’s social media announcement below.

“Survivor” can be one of the most entertaining shows on television, an adventure on a deserted island where strangers out-maneuver each other and compete in fun challenges. It can also be immensely uncomfortable when the illusion of the game fades away and real-life implications come into play. Above you can scroll through our photos of the 12 most disturbing moments in “Survivor” history, ranked from uncomfortable to ugly.
The safety of the “Survivor” castaways is always of grave importance, which is what makes the show’s medical evacuations so unfortunate to watch. Some, like Michael Skupin in “The Australian Outback,” have an accident, falling in the fire and requiring medical attention. Others push themselves to the brink, like Russell Swan in “Samoa” and Caleb Reynolds in “Kaoh Rong.” These are the worst kinds of “Survivor” exits, and while there can be compelling drama in seeing a castaway push themselves, it’s...

In honor of the upcoming 40th season of the beloved reality series, which premiered in 2000, here are some of the most shocking moments of the last 20 years of “Survivor” — from full-frontal nudity on national television to Dan Spilo getting kicked off the show last season. Season 40 premieres Feb. 12 at 8/7c on CBS.
Dan Spilo Gets Kicked Off the Show
The Hollywood talent manager was ejected from “Survivor: Island of the Idols” in 2019 following accusations of inappropriate touching, making him the first person to ever be kicked off the show. He has since said he is “deeply sorry.”
Season 1 Winner Richard Hatch Jailed for Tax Evasion
He was known as somewhat of a villain during his 2 stints on the show, but even more drama plagued Hatch after his time on “Survivor.” He ended up having to serve time in federal prison for tax evasion. Forbes has a good explainer of what happened there.

The premiere episode of Season 37 of “Survivor” started with a lot of touchy-feely moments and the usual grousing about outsized personalities, thanks to its premise of pitting so-called Davids against Goliaths. But it ended up with an unexpected and rather harrowing twist when Pat Cusack, a member of the David tribe who took charge of building their shelter, was suddenly shown to be moaning in pain and clearly injured in the final moments of the show. He somehow hurt his back when his tribe returned to their camp after they lost the immunity challenge when their boat went through choppy water caused by a rainstorm.

Everything went wrong last night on "Survivor: Kaoh Rong."
Even host Jeff Probst said he was "the most frightened I've been in all my time on 'Survivor,'" and this is Season 32. Three people collapsed. One was evacuated. And the episode ended with an infuriating round of bullying, hypocrisy, and the elimination of the most likable person on the Brawn tribe.
The drama started right away at the Reward Challenge. Everyone has talked about the particularly difficult conditions this season, and the heat took its toll when the players had to dig in the hot sun, with no hydration or protection. Debbie Wanner of the Brains tribe was the first to drop. Probst checked on her, and made sure she was fine. Then Cydney Gillon of the Brawn tribe and Caleb Reynolds of the Beauty tribe (and also "Big Brother 16") both dropped, and it was clear they were really in trouble.

We’ll next see Kurt Russell don the furs and cowboy hat for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, but if James Gunn has his way the star of The Thing and Stargate could be returning to the realm of sic-fi, with The Wrap reporting that the actor is being sought for the role of Peter Quill’s father in the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s early days yet, with Russell still having not officially met with Marvel, but hopefully this all pans out, because he would be pretty perfect for the role. Sure, we don’t know what the role involves, but take a moment and imagine him playing off against Chris Pratt........pretty promising, isn’t it? The identity of Quill’s father has been a closely kept secret since his involvement in the sequel was announced, with Gunn revealing that it won’t...

Say what you will about whether or not returning players have an unfair advantage within the game of "Survivor," I can say with certainty that returning players make the best "Survivor" exit interviews. If you think back on past seasons, folks like Coach and Russell Swan and Jonathan Penner have been responsible for my favorite post-elimination conversations, while highlights this season have come from veterans like Corinne Kaplan, Malcolm Freberg (a great interview when he was a newbie as well) and the always excitable Phillip Sheppard. The last of this season's exit interviews is, of course, with the season's...

Felicity star Keri Russell continues to prove why she’s such an appealing lead actress, though her performance is completely wasted in this turgid sci-fi guff, wearing its meagre budget on its sleeve alongside every imaginable genre cliche.
Things get weird pretty quickly in Dark Skies for Daniel (Josh Hamilton), Lacy (Russell) and their children, Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and Sammy (Kadan Rockett). Their home gets ransacked, the security system is tripped on its own, and it becomes increasingly clear that a malevolent extra-terrestrial entity wants something with the family. If they are to survive the ordeal as a unit, they will have to demonstrate the strength of their familial bond.
Viewers will be excused for having low expectations given writer-director Scott Stewart’s two “major” features to date, Legion and Priest. Needless to say, he has no qualms living down to forecasts right out of the gate,...

More than any of the returning players on "Survivor: Philippines," Mike Skupin was an enigma. Jonathan Penner had played twice and we knew what to expect from him. Russell Swan was a mystery, because barely anybody remembered him, but saying he was an enigma implies people had given him thought. But Mike Skupin? He killed a pig. He fell into the fire. But for the full decade after his departure from "Survivor: The Australian Outback," he was always the show's great "What if?" After seeing Skupin make it to the end of a "Survivor" season, some of...

Survivor: Philippines Review, Season 25, Episode 11
“Hell Hath Frozen Over”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
It’s been interesting this season to watch how each returning player has approached Survivor differently using his past knowledge. Russell Swan looked at his first appearance and decided to change his style. The problem was that he actually did well the first time as the leader before his exit. Mike Skupin competed during a different era where strategy took a back seat to physical survival. He seemed like a prime contender to leave early, but he’s maneuvered well heading towards the end. The surprise has been Jonathan Penner, who entered with a reputation as a strategist. He clearly understands the show and has studied how things work in the game. Unfortunately, his play hasn’t always reflected that intelligence. After surviving a few close calls after the merge, he got complacent and...

The third time wasn't the charm for returning Survivor player Jonathan Penner. The Los Angeles-based writer, who was voted out in Wednesday night's episode of Survivor: Philippines, originally competed on Survivor: Cook Islands, season 13, but returned three seasons later for Survivor: Micronesia -- Fans vs. Favorites, during which his knee became infected. Penner, 50, was one of three returning contestants for the show's 25th season (the other two were Russell Swan and Michael Skupin). Survivor giant Jonathan Penner was voted out of the game Wednesday night, being halted in his third attempt at winning the CBS hit reality show's million dollar grand prize. We're catching up with the 50-year-old Los Angeles-based writer, who discloses why he didn't take Lisa up on her final four offer, the biggest lesson he learned in Survivor, and his take on Abi's "honest" approach.
ETonline: I was sorry to see you go, because every week it just seemed like when you were on the chopping block, you found a way to get out of it --
Penner: Yeah and then I didn't realize I was on the chopping block, so I stopped working so hard -- dummy!
ETonline: So were you surprised when your name was called [at Tribal Council]?
Penner: No. I was surprised earlier in the day when i was told that it was going to be me. I was not surprised at the tribal because...

Carter Williams: I'm thankful for Keanu Reeves movies and breakfast burritos.
Jonathan Penner: I'm thankful for my friends and loved ones and my health. And I'm thankful to live in the greatest country in history during the greatest period of history. But mostly I'm thankful for my two beautiful kids and my disarmingly fantastic wife. As Robert Palmer said, "Simply irresistible!"

When Russell Swan played Survivor in 2009, his experience ended badly. On day 15 of Survivor: Samoa, a dehydrated Swan collapsed during a challenge, nearly scaring the khakis off host Jeff Probst. Three years later, he returned to the game only to face one of the worst losing streaks in Survivor history and being voted out fourth. Swan, a 45-year-old attorney from Pennsylvania, tells People about his discouragement and depression - and what he really thinks about Jeff Probst. So, it didn't go well this time out. What was the problem? I'm not going to throw [my tribesmates] under the bus, but this is a hard game.

While I knew the frustration that he'd obviously felt having his torch snuffed in Wednesday's episode, I still figured I'd talk with Russell about the mistake of taking a leadership role after vowing he wouldn't, about the decisions to vote out Zane and Angie and Roxy and whether any move could have reversed his tribe's ill fortune and about the last day at camp being lied to be both Denise and Malcolm. Survivor: Philippines Review, Season 25, Episode 4
“Create a Little Chaos”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Russell Swan is a very competitive guy. He claims to strive for excellence in everything that he does. When he loses a challenge, it must be part of God’s plan, not because of the superior performance of his opponents. This approach makes sense for a 13-year-old, but it seems pretty silly for a guy who’s been on this Earth for 45 years. After this week’s immunity challenge, he smashes a bottle of rice and can’t understand why he’s being put through so much turmoil. After mistakenly calling Jeff Probst “Lord”, Russell calms down but doesn’t step away from his simplistic view on athletic competitions. It’s an uncomfortable moment for everyone involved, but it also provides fascinating insights about his approach. Even with the drama, it’s more interesting...

And then there were two. Malcolm Freberg and Denise Stapley are the Survivor: Philippines' last remaining members of the Matsing (blue) tribe. With Russell Swan's exit -- the first to go of the three returning vets -- the handsome bartender and the fierce sex therapist must go it alone.
Although the tribes could merge next week, don't forget that in "Survivor: Palau" the Ulong tribe lost seven immunity challenges in a row until all that remained of their tribe was Stephenie Lagrossa.

1. Stephenie is Denise's favorite "Survivor" contestant ever. "I really liked Stephenie," she told us, pleasantly oblivious to the fate that awaited her. "I mean, poor girl. Her tribe just kept getting picked off one by one. It...

Survivor fans bid a fond farewell to friendly warrior Russell Swan on Wednesday night, as the second-time player was voted off after his tribe suffered four consecutive losses. Swan, who first appeared on 2009's Survivor: Samoa and was taken out early after suffering life-threatening dehydration, made a name for himself on the series with his diehard commitment to excellence and his honest and direct communication style. ETonline catches up with the 45-year-old Pennsylvania lawyer to hear his take on his Survivor: Philippines ouster.
ETonline: It was so hard to watch that challenge. You guys came so close last night to winning [and] not having to go to tribal council. How did that feel at that moment?

It’s hard enough when things don’t go well out there on the island on Survivor. But then you have to come back home and watch them not go well all over again on television. In fact, they usually go even worse, because now you have to watch other players say lots of mean things about you. That helps explain the fragile nature of Russell Swan when Jessica Shaw and I spoke to him on this week’s edition of the InsideTV Podcast. Russell is taking a deep, long look inside himself in the wake of what could only...

Russell Swan was the fourth Matsing member voted out of "Survivor: Philippines," and his frustration was very apparent at the Immunity Challenge. He tells Zap2it it's been hard to get over that frustration and disappointment.
Are you glad you went back to "Survivor"? Or was it more frustrating than anything else?
"It's interesting. I anticipated what some of the questions would be based on my initial experience and I thought how am I gonna answer these questions? It's interesting, I'm finding myself having difficulty because where I really am is this place of overall not doing well ... I don't want anybody to think I'm suicidal or anything, but this has been difficult. In the midst of it and trying to be down in the weeds in terms of what happened, what are you feeling, why the rage, why the humiliation, why the sadness -- on the continuum of this thing,...

Nobody likes to lose. And when the stakes are high and there's $1 million on the line, as in "Survivor: Philippines," emotions can be heightened. But no one was prepared for Russell Swan's meltdown after his tribe's latest loss.
Granted, his Matsing tribe is in the middle of one of the worst tribal showings in the history of the show. So far, they have lost every single challenge -- in a three-tribe race, so even second would be enough to not lose -- and have been whittled from six members to two.
After losing the latest challenge, Russell started crying out to God, saying he doesn't understand what's happening. When Jeff Probst asked him about his unusual outburst, saying that Russell's not a superhero, Russell responded, "I’m a guy who was formed by God’s hands. I’m a perfect creature."

No, Jeff’s repeated palm strikes — while accompanied by an admonishment to “Wake up!” was something else altogether. And I asked Angie just how she felt about that treatment on the newest edition of the InsideTV Podcast. I also asked her how she felt about...
