A musical stage adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is under development, with Jon M. Chu set to direct.
The musical, which is being developed by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Kevin Kwan, features a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, music by Helen Park and lyrics by Amanda Green and Tat Tong. The production is aiming for Broadway, with a pre-Broadway engagement to be announced shortly.
This would mark the Great White Way debut for Chu, who directed the film version of Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, as well as the upcoming two-part film adaptation of Wicked.
Both the film and the original book trilogy by Kwan provide the basis for the stage adaptation. The plot follows an American named Rachel Chu who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, for a wedding and finds out that he comes from a very wealthy family, which does not necessarily approve of her.

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.
At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.
The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

Drag Isn’t Dangerous, the livestream telethon hosted by Justin Martindale, Alaska 5000, Peppermint, and Adam Shankman on May 7, has raised over $500,000 in donations for LGBTQ+ causes and drag performers. Pre-telethon donations had already topped $100,000, which was then bolstered by over $400,000 in additional contributions.
“Thanks to your generosity we were able to raise over half a million dollars for the Drag Isn’t Dangerous fund to gift our beneficiaries to combat this rash of harmful anti-lgbtqia+ legislation,” Jacob Slane and David Charpentier of the Producer Entertainment Group wrote on the updated Go Fund Me page.

Top drag stars, LGBTQ celebrities including Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Adam Lambert, and celebrity allies of the queer community banded together Sunday to stage Drag Isn’t Dangerous, a telethon to raise money to combat anti-lgbtq legislation.
As anti-drag and anti-trans bills proliferate across the United States — such as Tennessee’s ban on public drag performances (which has been temporarily blocked by a judge) — the telethon brought in more than $500,000 from 5,000 individual donors. According to the organizers, “all net proceeds from the event will be divided among approved charities (GLAAD, Glsen, Headcount, Black Queer Town Hall, The ACLU Drag Defense Fund, Trans Justice Funding Project, Victory Fund) that support Lgbtqia+ causes and drag performers in need, especially in states where they face discrimination and bans.” The fundraiser, held through GoFundMe, continues through Tuesday.

Almost Famous, the stage musical adaptation of the 2000 Cameron Crowe film, will play its final performance on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, the latest casualty of a crowded Broadway scene and a New York tourist season still reeling from Covid.
The musical, which opened to middling reviews Nov. 3 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, will have played 30 preview performances and 77 performances when it closes. According to the most recent box office figures, Almost Famous was playing to houses about 74 full.

There's plenty of buzz around "Almost Famous: The Musical." As a Broadway screen-to-stage adaptation of Cameron Crowe's 2000 acclaimed autobiographical "Almost Famous," the production was dripping with promises. After a 2019 premiere at the San Diego Old Globe Theatre, the musical finally moved its way to the Broadway stage. With a book based on Crowe's Oscar-winning screenplay, some light revisions (like cutting out a non-consensual kiss), and a talented cast, what could go wrong? Sadly, not a lot goes right. Adding original songs by Tom Kitt ("The Visitor"), Crowe's book remains mostly intact yet the staging struggles to translate the charm for distinctive theatre sensibilities.
Growing up with a supportive but overbearing mother (Anika Larsen) in 1973 suburban San Diego, 15-year-old William Miller (Casey Likes) obsesses over rock albums left behind by his rebellious sister (Emily Schultheis). An emerging writer, William scores paid writing assignments, including one from Rolling Stone, to profile the rock band scene.

Being a passionate rock fan in the 1970s was a vocation requiring time and devotion. Go ahead, roll your eyes and groan “Ok boomer,” but there was no internet to call up performance clips, no music streaming services, no dedicated music video channels. There were listening stations in record stores, where crowds converged the day an anticipated new album was released; there was the radio, transmitting a jolt of excitement whenever a favorite song came on; and if you were lucky, there were concert tour stops in or near your hometown.
Friends’ record collections were gifts to be shared, like mini lending libraries. Weekly showcases for chart hits like American Bandstand or Soul Train in the U.S., Top of the Pops in the U.K. or Countdown in Australia were appointment television for teenage music fanatics.

Anyone who’s had even a mild obsession with Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous will instantly recognize some of the lyrics to the original songs in its musical adaptation, which opens on Broadway Nov. 3. “Cameron Crowe, to me, is a poet,” says Broadway veteran Tom Kitt, who co-wrote the songs for Almost Famous: The Musical with Crowe, including the instant classic “Elaine’s Lecture,” which uses the movie line “rock stars have kidnapped my son” as both refrain and punchline. “His words are lyrical. Over the course of 47 years, “Saturday Night Live” has amassed 94 acting Emmy nominations, 40 of which have gone to series regulars. Nine of these belong to Kate McKinnon, who, since surpassing Kristen Wiig in 2018, has held the record among all “SNL” repertory players for most TV academy notices. The NBC sketch show’s longest-serving female cast member just concluded her 11-season tenure and is now seeking her third Best Comedy Supporting Actress trophy, having bagged her first two in 2016 and 2017. If she succeeds, she will follow Valerie Harper (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”), Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) as the category’s fifth triple champion.
McKinnon has submitted “Host: Natasha Lyonne,” the 47th season finale, for Emmy consideration. Her swan song performance consists of appearances in the episode’s first and last sketches, with the former constituting the sixth reprisal of her Colleen Rafferty character.

What do “Some Like It Hot,” “High Noon,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Almost Famous” have in common? These popular and beloved films are making their long and winding road to the stage.
Since Disney asked Julie Taymor to find a way to bring Simba to Broadway, virtually every studio has been going through its archives to see what might transfer from screen to stage. (The opposite had been the traditional course of events.) Disney’s catalog of animated hits, alongside franchise spinoffs like “Wicked” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” attract a built-in family crowd. But the scorecard on many recent adaptations has been mixed: “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Tootsie,” “Pretty Woman” and even Billy Crystal’s “Mr. Saturday Night” — which closes Sept. 4 after a five-month run — are a few that came and went.

The Best Original Score prize is always one of the most coveted prizes at the Tony Awards. This year, the race is also one of the most competitive, pitting Michael R. Jackson’s music and lyrics for “A Strange Loop” against Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ work for “Six: The Musical.” In recent weeks, “A Strange Loop” has pulled ahead of “Six” in our combined odds as the clear frontrunner for Best Musical, so does that mean it has an edge in the contest for score as well? How often do the two awards go hand in hand?

“Almost Famous” is almost ready for Broadway. The specific New York theater has yet to be announced, but opening dates for the musical adaptation of the Cameron Crowe film were revealed by the Shubert Organization on Thursday, with previews set to begin Sept. 13 and an official opening night of Oct. 11.
If not for the pandemic, “Almost Famous” almost surely would have been opening a year or two earlier, as it was considered very much ready for prime time during a rapturously received preliminary engagement at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater in 2019. Two of the most popular trends on Broadway in recent years are musicals based on iconic films and “jukebox musicals” that feature the songs of popular American artists. So it was almost inevitable that “Almost Famous,” a beloved film that takes place in the music industry, would eventually be turned into a musical. Cameron Crowe has been working on a stage adaptation of his film for years, and the production announced this week that it will be opening on Broadway later in 2022.
Released in the fall of 2000, “Almost Famous” was inspired by Cameron Crowe’s experiences as a teenage music journalist for Rolling Stone. Patrick Fugit stars as a 15-year-old boy who is hired by the magazine and sent on assignment to follow the fictional 1970s rock band Stillwater (though some real 70s music icons make appearances). While on tour, he falls in love with groupie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson...

Almost Famous, the stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s rock & roll film of 2000, has announced a Broadway arrival for 2022. With the current spring season just about over, that means fall.
“It’s All Happening…Broadway 2022,” reads the production’s official Twitter page.
The musical, based on Crowe’s youthful days as a writer for Rolling Stone on the road with a famous rock band and its entourage of groupies, business people and hangers-on, will feature book and lyrics by Crowe, original music and lyrics by Tom Kitt, and direction by Jeremy Herrin.
The project has been in development since 2018. The film starred Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee and Philip Seymour Hoffman, with the plot following the young Crowe-like character, played by Fugit, as he traveled during the 1970s with a rock band called Stillwater.
The movie’s soundtrack included a treasure trove of classic rock hits, including Paul Simon’s “America,” Rod Stewart’s “Every Picture Tells a Story,” Led Zeppelin’s “That’s The Way,” David Bowie’s version of Lou Reed’s “I’m Waiting For The Man,” and a memorably ramshackle sing-along rendition of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”
Casting and other details about the upcoming musical have not been revealed.

By this time next year, it’s possible that Beanie Feldstein could be three-quarters of the way to completing her Egot.
Last year Feldstein starred as Monica Lewinsky on the FX anthology series, “Impeachment: American Crime Story.” Portraying the intern whose affair with President Bill Clinton led to the titular disciplinary process puts her right in the middle of the upcoming Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Actress. But getting the nomination will be no easy task in an immensely crowded field as she’s currently in 14th place in our Emmy odds.

Completing the coveted Egot grants access to one of the most elite clubs in show business. To date, only 16 people have done it. But Lin-Manuel Miranda could soon become the 17th person — and one of the youngest — to join the group, which includes extraordinary talents like Rita Moreno, Mel Brooks, Helen Hayes and Alan Menken.
Miranda has already won three Tony Awards during his fairly young career: one for Best Original Score for the musical “In the Heights,” which opened on Broadway in 2008, and two for the critically acclaimed “Hamilton” (Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score), which opened in 2015 and quickly became a worldwide sensation. He is also the recipient of three Grammys, winning Best Musical Theater Album for both “In the Heights” and “Hamilton,” as well as Best Song Written for Visual Media for penning “How Far I’ll Go” for Disney’s “Moana” (2016).
