In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.
Good for Richard Osman, it all seems to be very going well for him. But for Pointless?
Taking its cue from satirical current affairs show Have I Got News For You?, which settled on a revolving carousel of guest hosts when its regular host Angus Deayton was forced to step down instead of plumping for a permanent chair, Pointless has welcomed a series of co-hosts in the past couple of years.
First up were Sally Lindsay, Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne, Alex Brooker, Konnie Huq and Ed Gamble. Next came Andi Oliver,...

In the peaceful Greek city of Yolcos, Pattie (Sonja Ball) is a mouse who dreams of becoming a hero like Jason (of And The Argonauts fame). Her opportunity comes when a statue is unveiled of Zeus (Josh Widdicombe), leaving Poseidon (Rob Beckett) in a jealous rage. He gives the citizens of Yolcos seven days to build a statue in his honour that is as beautiful as Zeus’ statue, or their home will be destroyed.
While she is inspired by the fantastical tales she read, Pattie is disheartened at how nobody believes in her dreams of heroism. This includes Sam (Mark Camacho), her adopted father that is a vegetarian cat who resorts to backstabbing duplicity to prevent Pattie from leaving. Intent on proving her naysayers wrong, the mouse...

You will soon be able to compete in a series of ridiculous tasks, as Taskmaster becomes a live experience.
There are few programmes on television as joyous as Taskmaster. Created by ‘Little’ Alex Horne, the startlingly simple premise see comedians and actors compete in silly challenges for the amusement of the Taskmaster, an always delightful Greg Davies.
The show was a sleeper hit, steadily building a dedicated, almost fanatical audience on Dave before switching to primetime on Channel 4. There have been many classic moments, such as Joe Wilkinson’s potato problem, Josh Widdecombe’s helpful admin (which nobody else had to do) and Liza Tarbuck making Alex sit on a cake.
The show then became popular worldwide, with multiple countries taking on the format. While the American version, hosted by Reggie Watts, didn’t fare so well, it was the New Zealand edition which really took off. Musical comic...

Kendall. Robinson. Duker. Ó’Briain. Martin. The fight is On.
The winners of Taskmaster series 11-15 are currently doing sit-ups, drinking pints of raw egg, and running up and down the steps outside Chiswick Library. They’re in training for Taskmaster’s third Champion of Champions contest.
A little reminder of the contenders for this title now, on account of the internet having destroyed everybody’s attention spans, and shrunk our ability to retain information for longer than it takes a toaster to pop.
Champion of Champions 3 Line-Up Sarah Kendall
Representing series 11 is the magnificently-maned Sarah Kendall, Australian comic, writer and actor. She’s technically the dunce of this operation going in with a whole-series points score of just 158, but a dynamite chick like her isn’t about to let that get in the way. The woman’s ready for the apocalypse at all times, do not underestimate her.

Warning: This contains spoilers for all series of Taskmaster, including Series 15
Series 15 of Taskmaster has been delightfully ruthless already. So far we’ve had Ivor Graham sabotaging Kiell Smith-Bynoe in the first Live task and Greg Davies letting all the contestants get away with touching things in a task that said “you must not touch anything at any point”.
Then, in episode 4, the show joyously almost descended into full anarchy both over the definition of “throwing” and what a banana is (more on this later).
We suspect Taskmaster fans will be arguing over #throwgate for a while, but it’s not the first controversial decision to go down in the show’s history. In fact, for many, the mere mention of the words “potato”, “hula hoop” and “Mark Watson” are enough to trigger an epic Taskmaster rant to this day. Let’s take a look back at some of the show’s most questionable rulings.

Frankie Boyle tore into Matt Hancock and Keir Starmer during an appearance on The Last Leg.
The Scottish comedian joined Adam Hills,Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker to talk about the week’s events, which included the leaking of former health secretary Hancock’s private WhatsApp messages sent during the pandemic.
Hancock criticised journalist Isabel Oakeshott, who provided the messages after ghostwriting his book Pandemic Diaries. He called the action a “massive betrayal of trust”.
The messages have prompted yet another backlash against Hancock, with Boyle saying on Friday (3 March): “Even his hairline is trying to disown him.”
He called out Hancock’s decision to appear on ITV series I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, saying that he chose to lie in the ground “surrounded by worms” to try and make the country forget he had “killed their granny”.
Boyle was referring to Hancock’s response...

Jimmy Carr has been mocked by Amanda Holden for having a hair transplant.
Holden made the dig while appearing as a judge on the forthcoming episode of I Can See Your Voice on BBC One (Saturday 22 October).
In a clip seen by Metro, the judging panel – which also includes Carr, Alison Hammond and Alexandra Burke – were introduced to two friends who met while working at a hair salon.
“Do I look alright?” Holden, 51, jokingly asked, before pointing at Carr, 50, and saying: “What about his new hair? Because that was from someone else – it was donated.”
Carr was quick to join in on the joke at his own expense. “It’s from a donor,” he said. “One of One Direction looks terrible now.”

It’s official: the Eurovision Song Contest will not be held in London.
A shortlist of potential host cities was unveiled on Friday morning and, as had been widely expected, the U.K.’s capital city has been left off.
Instead, the seven U.K. cities left to battle it out to host the contest are Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield. The news comes as U.K. public networks make an effort to decentralize broadcasting away from London.

Compensation
Visual effects and animation studio Dneg, whose credits include “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” will pay enhanced overtime to its U.K. employees.
From October, Dneg will pay overtime at 1.5x rate to all U.K. staff in non-management positions for all incremental time that they are asked to work beyond the standard 40-hour week. The move will bring Dneg’s U.K. overtime policy in line with its studios in North America and applies across its film and episodic visual effects, Dneg Animation and ReDefine operations, including its artist, production, technology and support teams.
The decision is a departure from the existing U.K. industry norm, where employees are compensated for overtime with paid time off after a project is completed.
Dneg has won multiple awards over the years. In 2021 alone, the company won the visual effects BAFTA and Oscar for Christopher Nolan‘s “Tenet.”

Contains spoilers for the Taskmaster series 11 finale

Who is Mike Wozniak?
He’s an absolute bloody milk guzzler, that’s who.
Like Harry Hill, Graham Chapman, Graeme Garden and Paul Sinha before him, Mike Wozniak trained and worked as a doctor before becoming a stand-up. Healthcare’s loss was comedy’s gain. His 2013 Edinburgh Fringe show, in which Wozniak played an outmoded light entertainer, received a Best Comedy Show nomination.

Remember thinking you’ve reached the end of a Christmas stocking, and then discovering an additional lump of festive fun stuffed right in the toe? Such joy. Thanks to Channel 4, that’s the case with this year’s Taskmaster, which has announced a one-off Christmas Special episode for 2020.
There’s no air date confirmed for the festive episode as yet, but seeing as the currently airing series 10 finale arrives on Thursday the 17th of December, it’ll be after that.
In 2017, the comedians-do-silly-challenges show aired a two-part Champion of Champions special at Christmastime featuring the winners of the first five series. This time, the Special will feature an all-new cast of five contestants brand new to Taskmaster.
Production company Avalon is staying coy about the newcomers’ identities, only announcing that “Our well-known contestants are experts in their respective fields, and will be revealed in due course.”

Without comedy panel show Taskmaster, the world would be a worse place. There’d be no Tree Wizard, no Bob Mortimer-designed pork pie presentation unit, a great deal less footage of the brilliant weirdness of Sally Phillips, Josh Widdicombe wouldn’t have a Greg Davies foot tattoo and the mayor of Chesham would never have been presented with the rare gift of 42 Calippos.
Created by Alex Horne and developed for television from his 2010 Edinburgh Fringe show, Taskmaster brings extreme and silly joy; it is to be cherished.
Nine series of the show that pits comedians against absurd and pointless challenges to see just how their minds work have aired on Dave since 2015. This year, it’s packing up and moving to a new home on Channel 4, a move confirmed in November 2019 with these words from Alex on the official website:

British broadcaster UKTV has unveiled its latest slate for entertainment network Dave. The BBC Studios-backed network has ordered Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, a comedy format fronted by the former Great British Bake Off host and comedy and food format Big Zuu’s Big Eats as well as new series of motoring show World’s Most Dangerous Roads and comedy format Hypothetical. Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable is an eight-part series, produced by Expectation, where three celebrities are invited in to a confessional to find out who’s committed sins that are so bad that they should be declared unforgivable. Big Zuu’s Big Eats, which is produced by Twofour Group’s Boomerang, follows comedians including Desiree Burch, Ed Gamble, Jamali Maddix, Jimmy Carr and London Hughes as they eat on tour. Finally, Hypothetical, produced by Episodes producer Hat Trick, returns for a third season with Josh Widdicombe and James Acaster, while World’s Most Dangerous Roads,...

UKTV, which is a joint venture between Discovery and BBC Studios, has handed British comedians Josh Widdicombe and James Acaster a new comedy panel show. This comes as its carriage feud with UK cable operator Virgin Media rumbles on.
The multichannel broadcaster has commissioned eight-part entertainment format Hypothetical for its male skewing network Dave. The series is produced by Episodes and Have I Got News For You producer Hat Trick Productions, which is currently working on Anna Paquin-fronted Flack for UKTV.
The show will test two teams of comedians on their ability to deal with a series of ridiculous hypothetical scenarios such as how someone would cope living in a motorway services for a year or how to take a selfie with Nicolas Cage within 48 hours or you die
Each hypothetical will be posed by Widdicombe, while Acaster’s job is to enforce ridiculous rules and score the guests’ attempts at dealing with them.

Tom Bennett and Jennifer Saunders lend their skills to a film that has no shortage of talent but is low on good gags
Beattie Edmondson is the tremendous comic performer who made her name in the BBC’s excellent flatshare sitcom Josh, with Josh Widdicombe and Elis James; now, after some walk-on film parts in Bridget Jones’s Baby and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, she gets a quirky starring role in this sentimental and worryingly gag-free romantic comedy. She is Sarah, a klutzy singleton hopeless with relationships and everything else, who inherits an adorable pug called Patrick from her late grandmother.
At first she loathes the dog but then grasps that by taking Patrick for walks in the park she gets to meet men, including a hunky vet (Ed Skrein) and a sensitive bloke (Tom Bennett). There’s a cameo for Edmondson’s mum, Jennifer Saunders. An awful lot depends...

Taskmaster returns for a fifth series tonight on Dave, featuring Bob Mortimer, Sally Phillips, Nish Kumar, Aisling Bea and Mark Watson...
“I think I could probably fit all that lot in my trousers,” says Tim Key gesturing at the crowded kitchen worktop of a London flat in this 2008 YouTube video. He then tests the hypothesis, starting with a loaf of bread, a bunch of bananas and a silver espresso maker. Into the trouser leg they go, followed by a parade of unlikely items - a cheese grater, a bottle of orange squash, an unwieldy marble bowl. Every so often, a hand reaches out from the camera to assist. It belongs to comedian Alex Horne, seen intermittently in the back of shot drinking a coffee and checking his watch.

Tina Fey has real nerd roots, and they run deep. Fey was on Graham Norton's couch with Kurt Russell and Josh Widdicombe, which gave Graham the opportunity to go in on her dorky past. Wow! The Last Leg presenter Adam Hills got into the spirit of Channel 4's Stand Up To Cancer telethon by shaving his head.
Viewers were asked to vote on how they would like the show to finish, either with diehard Arsenal fan Alex Brooker wearing a Spurs football shirt, Greg Davies weightlifting Josh Widdicombe or Hills shaving his head.

The poll was announced at the end of the show as 11% for the Spurs shirt, 23% for Greg's weightlifting and an overwhelming 66% voted in favour of Hills going bald.
Quick to pick up the clippers were Brooker and guest Russell Howard, who didn't take long to shear Hills of his thick head of hair.
The impact seemed to dawn on the comedian, who shrieked: "What have I done? What have I done?!"

Josh Widdicombe's BBC sitcom pilot proved funny enough to be granted a full series.
The popular stand-up comic will lead the cast of Josh, following a successful Comedy Feed pilot online in 2014. The six-part series will air on BBC Three in November.
Co-written by Widdicombe and Tom Craine, it will be directed by frequent Steve Coogan collaborator David Schneider, and also stars Beattie Edmondson, Ellis James and Jack Dee.
Centred around grumpy and single Josh and his two flatmates Kate and Owen, his life is plagued with crappy situations such as a rubbish pool party and being played by his high school crush.
Jack Dee plays their bizarre landlord who inserts himself into their lives as much as possible, whether they want him there or not.
There will also be a host of celebrity cameos throughout the series, including Jennifer Saunders, Romesh Ranganathan, James Acaster and... The Chuckle Brothers!

Greg Davies and Alex Horne's Taskmaster has been renewed for two further series.
The pair will return for ten newly commissioned episodes, putting comedians through their paces in outrageous challenges.
Frank Skinner, Josh Widdicombe, Roisin Conaty, Tim Key and Romesh Ranganathan all appeared on the first series of the game show.
Horne said about the new series: "This news is both exciting and appropriate; the Taskmaster still has many tasks he needs completing - almost all of which are either far-fetched or still unconcocted - and who better to attempt such challenges than a fresh bunch of ill-equipped and unhealthily competitive comedians."
The programme originally began as a live show helmed by Horne, which ran at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010 and 2011.
The first series aired on Dave earlier this year.

Alex Horne spent a whole year setting silly tasks for his mates for an hour's worth of fun at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2010 and 2011. Now, he's bringing Taskmaster to TV with the help of Greg Davies and Dave.
The award-winning comic will sit aside Davies in the comedy game show. "I'm sort of the Nick Hewer to his Alan Sugar," he told Digital Spy. Frank Skinner, Tim Key, Romesh Ranganathan, Roisin Conaty and Josh Widdicombe will be the unfortunate stars who have to endure their crazy ideas.
"It was entirely meant to be a bit of fun, I quite like doing an extra show while I'm up in Edinburgh because I think it's such a good chance to do something with other comedians," he said. "Someone did say after 'ooh that would work well on telly', and I didn't really think they were right, because telly normally can take the fun out of something,...

Developed from Alex Horne's popular Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows, the comic is joined by Greg Davies as they dish out ridiculously silly challenges to five comedians.
Frank Skinner, Josh Widdicombe, Roisin Conaty, Tim Key and Romesh Ranganathan will all appear on the upcoming game show, to find out who among them is the most multi-talented comic.

The BBC licence fee is always a hot topic, and culture secretary John Whittingdale will face questions about it during this year's Edinburgh International TV Festival.
The Conservative MP will also take questions about the BBC's charter renewal and Channel 4's future amid rumours of its privatisation, in a one-on-one interview with journalist Alastair Stewart.
"We are delighted that the new culture secretary is coming to the TV Festival in its 40th anniversary year," said Guardian Edinburgh TV Festival advisory chair Zai Bennett.
"There are few MPs more knowledgeable about the media than John Whittingdale, and I'm sure the industry will be excited to hear his views on issues ranging from the impending charter renewal, to discussions on privatisation. This really is a session not to be missed."
The government recently denied it has plans to sell off Channel 4 following Ofcom's third review of public service broadcasting, which is currently under way.

The programme originally began as a live show helmed by Horne, which ran at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010 and 2011.
