Angelina Jolie celebrated son Maddox's 18th birthday with a trip to Cleveland on Aug. 5. During the visit, Angelina - who recently penned a powerful essay in Elle's September issue - modeled a light brown dress while Maddox sported a t-shirt and baseball cap. The duo joined longtime friend Loung Ung - the author of First They Killed My Father, which inspired Angelina's 2017 film adaption - for a meal while visiting the city.
In a Facebook post, Loung shared details about about her union with Angelina, 44, and Maddox, writing, "We started with lunch at Market Garden Brewpub and a visit to Ohio City Farm/The Refugee Response Program and Cleveland Museum of Art! I met Maddox when he was just a year old and today he turns eighteen and going off to college! So proud! Happy Birthday, Maddox!" How does one depict a genocide such as that inflicted by the Khmer Rouge on the Cambodian people? Some — such as Rithy Pahn, who used clay figures rather than actors for the reenactments in his Oscar-nominated documentary “The Missing Piece” — would argue that to do so is to empower the perpetrators, to exploit the victims, and potentially to reduce the atrocities to a form of spectacle. And yet, the world must not be allowed to forget. By embracing hand-drawn animation as a tool for tactful re-creation, “Funan” director Denis Do provides audiences a unique window into this relatively under-represented 20th-century horror, one that serves as an act of witnessing even as it avoids directly showing the violence on-screen.
Do’s restraint is an artistic choice, not one forced upon him by censors or producers concerned about reaching the widest audience possible. Even by cutting away from the worst incidents — which include beatings,...

Nannies, tutors and private international flights: The lives of celebrity kids are luxurious — and costly.
So when Angelina Jolie filed on Aug. 7 requesting a hearing about child support with her estranged husband Brad Pitt, it brought the spending on their six kids — Maddox, 17, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12 and twins Vivienne and Knox, 10 — to the forefront of their divorce proceedings.
Jolie’s attorney Samantha Bley DeJean asserted in court papers that Pitt “has a duty to pay child support. As of present, [Pitt] has paid no meaningful child support since separation.” The next day, Pitt’s attorney Lance Spiegel responded with a filing stating that the actor,...

“First They Killed My Father,” Angelina Jolie’s gripping drama about a child surviving the Khmer Rouge, is the actress-turned-director’s finest film to date. The movie was rejected by the Oscars, receiving no nominations, though it was Cambodia’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film — a fact that in no way diminishes the artistry and power of the film Jolie crafted from Cambodian author and activist’s Loung Ung’s best-selling memoir of the same name. The story had deep personal resonance; Jolie’s son, Maddox, is Cambodian by birth. The director said she felt a great responsibility to get the story right — not just for her son, but for all Cambodians.

We don't get to see much of Angelina Jolie outside of award season, but when she does make an appearance on the red carpet, she doesn't disappoint. After attending the Golden Globes with eldest son Pax as her date, Angelina made a radiant appearance at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala with daughters Shiloh and Zahara in tow. Joining the adorable trio was American human-rights activist Loung Ung, who also hit the Golden Globes red carpet with Jolie over the weekend. Despite 2017 being a turbulent year for the family, and Shiloh still recovering from a snowboarding-induced broken arm, the actress and her daughters chose the glitzy night to continue their long tradition of turning red carpet events into girls' nights out.

This story about Angelina Jolie and “First They Killed My Father” first appeared in the special foreign-language issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine. Angelina Jolie is not the only director in the Oscar foreign-language race who was not born in the country her film is representing, but she’s certainly the most famous one. An American who was granted Cambodian citizenship more than a decade ago for her humanitarian work in the country, Jolie returned there to make “First They Killed My Father,” a brutal but beautiful film that recounts the story of Loung Ung, who was five years old when her.

When Angelina Jolie needed a new cinematographer on the eve of shooting “First They Killed My Father” (Netflix), Cambodia’s Best Foreign-Language Oscar entry, the director called on the Dp she wanted in the first place: Oscar-winner Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire”). It turned out to be a trial by fire of the most creative kind.
Based on the celebrated memoir by Loung Ung, who, with her family, was forced into a work camp by the Khmer Rouge at the age of five, the historical thriller was shot totally from her perspective.
“I only had three days of prep and the first background action had a crowd between 400 and 600 extras,” said Dod Mantle, who’s presenting the film this week in competition at the 25th Camerimage festival in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Director Angelina Jolie wanted audiences watching First They Killed My Father, based on Loung Ung's memoir set during the Cambodian genocide, to see through the eyes of a child — young actress Sareum Srey Moch, who gives a remarkably expressive performance as Loung.
In the words of its Oscar-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire), the Netflix film, Cambodia's foreign-language Academy Award entry, is "an attempt, as full-on as possible, to project how a child will perceive these incidents around her, which were everything from beauty and happiness in the beginning to unadulterated chaos and darkness. "An unambiguous triumph." Netflix has debuted a second trailer for Angelina Jolie's latest film First They Killed My Father, which is already playing in cinemas and on Netflix now. They're hoping to drum up extra buzz and bring attention to this film, even though it's already available on Netflix. The full title for the film is First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, based on the book written by Loung Ung, who also co-wrote the script with Jolie. It tells the story of the deadly Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, which was the corrupt Communist Party that lead the Cambodian genocide. The authentic cast includes Sareum Srey Moch, Phoeung Kompheak, and Sveng Socheata. The film received some rave reviews out of the Telluride Film Festival, and it looks like a very powerful, historic drama. It's worth a look. Angelina Jolie is basking in a standing ovation at Telluride after the first screening of “First They Killed My Father.” It’s the film she wanted to make: Based on the 2000 memoir of Loung Ung, who was five when the Khmer Rouge forced her family into work camps, it required a $24 million budget, a 60-day shoot, a two-hour, 16-minute cut. The only place she pitched the film is the only one who would let her make it: Netflix.
“She had a very specific view of the story she wanted to tell,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “It’s very traditional. It’s just as resource-intense to make a small film as a big film, where there isn’t much infrastructure in Cambodia. It would have been difficult to get made anywhere, with all local talent. It all pays off on the screen.”

Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” has been officially submitted by Cambodia to the Oscars’ Best Foreign Language Film category, where the dark Netflix drama has become the latest of almost 50 films to enter the race. Jolie’s film was made in Cambodia with an all-Cambodian cast, and contains virtually no English dialogue. It is based on the memoir by Loung Ung, who was a child when the brutal Khmer Rouge regime took control of her country. She and her family were driven from their comfortable home in the city and moved to a work camp in the country.

Will wonders never cease. A film about Cambodia told from a Cambodian perspective instead of through the heroic intervention of white outsiders. Yes, that's Angelina Jolie behind the camera, as director and co-writer, but First They Killed My Father, subtitled "A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers," steadfastly honors its first-person account. The film takes the point of view of Loung Ung (newcomer Sreymoch Sareum), who was only five years old when the Communist Khmer Rouge entered the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh in 1975, brutally executing fellow Cambodians with ties to the...

“Commendable” feels like a backhanded way to compliment a movie, but for better or worse, it suits “First They Killed My Father.” An adaptation of Loung Ung’s memoir of the same name, Angelina Jolie’s film tells an important story, detailing the devastating reign of the Khmer Rouge through the eyes of a young girl. But in between its unsparing depiction of both Cambodia’s vast beauty and its history of brutality, Jolie’s latest can’t quite decide how glossy or graphic it wants to be, ultimately settling for alternately sobering and pretty but less emotionally effective than visually.

Angelina Jolie knows how to go with the flow.
The actress and director, whose new movie for Netflix, First They Killed My Father, debuts on Friday, chatted with AP at the Toronto International Film Festival about the challenges of dealing with red-carpet premieres with six kids in tow.
“The reason I was a little late is they made me change,” Jolie, 42, said with a smile. “They thought what I was wearing was too revealing.”
At least they’re past the diaper stage. “I actually went to a premiere once with pee on me,” Jolie says. “It was when the kids...

It looks like filmmaking runs in the family, with Maddox Jolie-Pitt following in the footsteps of his celebrity parents Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In the new film about the Khmer Rouge genocide, First They Killed My Father, Jolie-Pitt earned his executive producer credit by sitting in on meetings, prepping for shoots and reviewing dailies. However, he was not alone in the creation of the movie based on family friend Loung Ung's memoir, with his mom in the director's chair and his 13-year-old brother Pax Jolie-Pitt working as a set photographer. And in his first major interview, the 16-year-old revealed what it was like to work with his mother on the project. "[She's] fun, funny, and easy to...
