Tiwa Savage has long held a unique position in African music as the leading female artist in the Afrobeats genius. After headlining global tours, collaborating with Beyoncé and Brandy and championing newcomers, Savage Tiwa is embarking on her next venture: starring in and executive producing her debut full-length feature film, “Water and Garri.”
The film, slated for global debut on Prime Video on May 10, follows Aisha, a successful fashion designer, as she returns to Nigeria after a decade in the United States. She’s taken aback by the profound changes that have swept through her homeland and the people she once knew. Set to the evocative soundtrack of the same name, Aisha’s journey unfolds to reveal poignant cultural shifts. The accompanying soundtrack is a key component of the experience, as the film’s tracklisting mirrors Aisha’s interactions and feelings throughout.

It’s a fascinating and complicated time to be an Afropop lover, with so many people outside of Africa joining the ranks. That represented a 34 percent jump in streams over the year before. All of this newfound attention has made for great music, collaborations, and Irl spaces to jam — from Atlanta to Amsterdam to Abuja — but has also raised concerns around ownership, opportunities,...

Mr Eazi has announced his debut album will arrive Oct. 27, and he’s premiering the music video for lead single “Chop Time, No Friend” with Rolling Stone. Though his debut is forthcoming, he has already released five bodies of work over his decade-long career; he was already a West African star as a Nigerian native and Ghanaian transplant before Afrobeats fully staked its claim in the U.S. He’s since become a leader of the genre’s globalization, crossing over into key byways of pop music’s mainstream. Tom Cruise swears his allegiance to three things: movie theaters, the Church of Scientology, and, for some reason, the British Royal Family. The “Top Gun: Maverick” star made a pre-recorded appearance at the King Charles’ Coronation Concert on Sunday, shouting out his beloved franchise in the process.
In the video that opened the concert, celebrating Charles’ official coronation as king of Britain on Saturday, Cruise was recorded flying a fighter jet throughout the air. Addressing the camera, he said: “Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time,” referencing one of the most famous lines from the original 1986 “Top Gun.”

It was the U.K.’s first coronation in 70 years — a cause even Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise and Pierce Brosnan had to celebrate.
A star-studded lineup for King Charles III’s Coronation Concert took to an enormous stage on Windsor Castle grounds, the historic building a shimmering backdrop for a crowd of 20,000 on Sunday night.
The polished gardens — tidy from the monarch’s “7 a.m. weeding,” joked Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville, who served as host for the event — were a sea of red, white and royal blue as fans across the country gathered to toast to the king and queen.
In and among performances from Katy Perry, Nicole Scherzinger and Lionel Richie (the latter managing to tempt the king out of his seat for some bobbing to All Night Long) were video messages of congratulations and “Did you know?” facts about Charles from Hollywood royalty.

More star power is being added to the upcoming concert following the coronation of King Charles III.
Previous reports indicated that a bevy of big-name British musical acts — including Adele, Harry Styles, Sir Elton John, the Spice Girls and Ed Sheeran — turned down the opportunity to perform at the Coronation Concert. As a result, the show will feature a roster of decidedly non-British acts, including Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Andrea Bocelli.
Now, more information is emerging about the concert, with Variety reporting that Tom Cruise, Winnie the Pooh, Nicole Scherzinger and others will also be part of the festivities.

But he worked both the boards and the mic on his latest single, “Finesse.” He floats across the slinky beat, built around gentle guitar, subtle drum rolls, and other delicate percussion; so does his guest Bnxn, the artist formerly known as Buju.
Bnxn, a 24-year-old singer, adds “Finesse” to the more than two dozen features he’s racked up (including Wizkid’s “Mood”) since his 2018 debut.

On June 4, Nigeria’s federal government indefinitely suspended Twitter in the country — ironically announcing the action on the platform itself. In a tweet thread, the Ministry of Information and Culture cited “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence,” as the motivation for the ban. The reality of it appears much more insidious. On June 2, the site deleted a tweet by Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari condemning a recent string of attacks on public infrastructure in the country’s southeast region. In the tweet,...

When the Nigerian veteran Spinall released his fifth album, Grace, last December, “Sere” was an immediate highlight. Frisky yet reverential, with goofy come-ons (“I no fit fight kung-fu/But I go fight for you”), piercing percussion, balmy guitar, cheerful “whoo!” ad-libs, and unexpected spurts of saxophone, the track has amassed more than two million streams on Spotify.
Spinall gave the track a new jolt of energy in the form of a remix featuring 6lack on Thursday. 6lack initially adds somber weight to the track, singing in a low-to-the-ground, conversational tone.

Nothing new to see here, move along.
Like the stereotypical narratives we have come to expect from Hollywood about Africa, “Coming 2 America” offers nothing new to audiences despite the 33 years that separate the original from the sequel.
The fictional country of Zamunda is a mixed bag of persistent stereotypes about African poverty, disease, conflict, poor leadership and hypersexual women who lack agency, all coated in Eddie Murphy’s brand of slapstick comedy that uses negative stereotypes to get easy laughs. It doesn’t add much nuance or context to the continent’s story, but it does put Africa front and center on a global stage.
Although the responsibility of telling nuanced and authentic stories about Africa belongs to the continent’s storytellers, not to Hollywood, until they have the platform and reach that Hollywood’s movies and actors do, Africans will continue to watch, and hold them to account...

Like the 1988 comedy, “Coming to America,” its sequel 33 years later also features its share of memorable musical moments.
Director Craig Brewer, who worked with Eddie Murphy on “Dolemite Is My Name,” knew how passionate people were about the original and “didn’t want to mess anything up,” he tells Variety. The director wanted to tackle such universal themes as parenthood and tradition using the film’s soundtrack combined with Jermaine Stegall’s score.
Brewer admits one of the first ideas he pitched was the “Gett Off” sequence. The 1991 song by Prince also happens to be one of his favorites. Says Brewer: “If we viewed the first movie as a template for what Zamundan custom is and a princess is being presented to a prince, there has to be a dance. I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if he did ‘Gett Off’ by Prince?”
That “fun idea” evolved into a...

Growing up in Africa, one of the first Hollywood movies to make an impact on Sipho Dlamini was Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy “Coming to America,” in which the comedian starred as a prince from the fictional African country of Zamunda.
“I know how significant a movie it was to people living in Africa or Africans in the diaspora,” says Dlamini, a veteran music executive who in January was promoted to CEO of Universal Music South Africa and Sub-Saharan South Africa. “I can still recite some of the jokes from the first movie, like the barbershop scene or the jokes about ‘sexual chocolate.’ It’s one of my favorite comedies of all time.”
So when Dlamini visited Universal Music Group’s offices in Los Angeles in late 2019 and started catching wind of conversations around the soundtrack for the movie’s long-in-the-works sequel, “Coming 2 America”, he knew he had to find a way to get involved.

Throughout her illustrious career, Beyoncé Knowles Carter has been shaping popular culture from within an industry dominated by whiteness, as all Black artists have been forced to do. Having conquered the music industry, she has now set her sights on the ultimate symbol of lily-white America: Disney. That she has done so from within the system, collaborating and making bank off a studio known for its smash hit spin on Hamlet set in an undefined idea of Africa voiced mostly by white actors, is a particularly genius sleight of hand only she could pull off.
“Black Is King” is not simply another visual album by Beyoncé, it is a bold re-imagining of “The Lion King” from a Black American perspective, and in constant conversation and collaboration with African artists and traditions. Overflowing with stunning visuals, “Black Is King” blends imagery from the Pan-African movement, African art and Western portraiture of African bodies,...

“Black Is King,” written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé, will premiere globally on Disney Plus on July 31, 2020. That’s just after the one-year anniversary of the theatrical release of Disney’s “The Lion King” remake, for which Queen Bey voiced Nala (and which launched on Disney Plus in January).

Yemi Alade had a cold.
Last month, the Nigerian star, who recently passed the one-million-subscribers mark on YouTube, flew to Los Angeles to work on a project by Beyoncé. But when Alade landed, she discovered she no longer had a singing voice. “I couldn’t understand what had happened to me,” she says. “I could talk, but I couldn’t even hit the lowest key.”
Panicked, she immediately went into full recovery mode. “I went for a steaming so I could get more moisture,” Alade recalls. “I jacked up on vitamin C.

Beyoncé has unveiled the track listing for her “Lion King” companion album on her website… a whole three days ahead of its release. That might be even sooner than expected, given how much Queen Bey likes surprises and somehow managed to keep the entire project under wraps until the week before the album and movie come out.
Beyoncé herself appears on nine of the 14 tracks, but it’s still a pretty big kingdom represented on “The Lion King: The Gift.” Guests include her voice-acting costar Donald Glover — billed for his musical talents as Childish Gambino, of course — along with her husband and child, Jay-Z and Blue Ivy Carter. Her musical cast is rounded out by Pharrell, Jessie Reyez, Tekno, Yemi Alade, Mr. Eazi, Burna Boy, Slatiel, SAINt Jhn, WizKid, Tiwa Savage, Shatta Wale, Teirra Whack, Busiswa, Moonchild Sanelly and 070 Shake.
