Works from Perry Como to The Cars were added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, which designates recordings worthy of preservation “based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”
Among the 25 selected this year are Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Blondie’s “Parallel Lines,” The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ready to Die,” Green Day’s “Dookie” and The Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.” Also on the list are Lily Tomlin’s comedy recordings, and much older titles like Gene Autry’s “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are” and Como’s “Catch a Falling Star” / “Magic Moments.” The Cars’ debut album is on the list as well as Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Some of the titles added date to 1919, with the entry of the all-Black 369th U.S. Infantry Band led by James Reese Europe.

Zack Snyder loves a director’s cut. Most of his movies have received some manner of alternate cut over the years, but there’s still one project he’d like to make a proper director’s cut of — Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch didn’t receive the best reviews upon release in 2011, but Snyder told Empire that he’d love to “fix” the movie if given the chance. “The only movie I would change is Sucker Punch, because it never really got finished correctly,” Snyder said. “Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.”
Related Zack Snyder talks about why a director’s cut of Sucker Punch is unlikely
Snyder added that he already has everything he requires to assemble a director’s cut of Sucker Punch; all he needs is permission.

Netflix’s The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping is occasionally as hard to watch as it is impossible to ignore. Directed by Katherine Kubler, a former “student” of the troubled-teen-repair institution, the limited documentary series uncovers the appalling conditions of the now-defunct and abandoned Ivy Ridge boarding academy located in the wilds of Oswegatchie, New York.
Kubler attended or was incarcerated in Ivy Ridge from March 2004 to June 2005. She entered at age 15, kidnapped abruptly against her will in the middle of the night on the grievous charge of sipping a Mike’s Hard Lemonade at a previous school. Facing an unbelieving father, Kubler feels the forcefully-abandoned experience she endured stole her teenage years, and continues to embezzle large deposits from her adult psyche. Her post-traumatic stress and persistent panic attacks are a constant reminder of damage that cannot be undone.
Except maybe through long-form journalism. Kubler self-effacingly calls herself an “amateur gumshoe,...

Chelsea Handler, hosting the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, had praise for women in film, took broadsides at studio executives, and made some digs at her ex-boyfriend, comedian Jo Koy, who was widely criticized for his hosting the Golden Globes a week earlier.
“Thank you for laughing at that — my writers wrote it,” Handler said at one point, a reference to Koy blaming his writers in the middle of a dying Golden Globes monologue last Sunday that included a joke about Barbie’s bustline.
Comedian, actor and former talk host Handler, in her second consecutive turn as Critics Choice host, also raved about 2023 as “one the horniest years for movies and TV,” citing sexually explicit movies such as Saltburn and Poor Things. She joked that she personally prefers older men like Harrison Ford and Robert de Niro — “men who had been around since the railway was invented.”

Indie producer Harry Cohn, brother Jack and their associate Joe Brandt created the CBC Film Sales Company in 1918. And on Jan. 10, 1924, the trio formed the Poverty Row studio, Columbia Pictures. According to Enclyclopedia.com, by the mid-20s “Cohn had gained reputation as one of the industry’s toughest businessmen.” That’s putting it mildly.
Though “B” movies and series such as The Three Stooges, “Blondie” and “The Lone Wolf” were the bread and butter of the studio, Cohn slowly attracted top talent and directors and turned such newcomers as Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, William Holden and Kim Novak into stars.
Frank Capra changed the fortunes of the studio. Signing with Columbia in 1928, he made 25 films for Columbia. His optimistic, common man movies attracted critics and audiences alike during the Depression. His 1934 screwball comedy “It Happened One Night,” penned by Robert Riskin and starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, swept the Oscars winning five.

Hollywood has always been enamored of franchises. Universal became synonymous with horror movies in the 1930s with their Classic Monsters run, while MGM mined Mickey Rooney's Andy Hardy character for 16 films. And then there's the "Blondie" series based on Chic Young's comic strip, which Columbia Pictures wrung bone dry for a staggering 28 installments.
For the most part, these films were produced quickly and cheaply for a quick score at the box office. It wasn't until 1962, when United Artists made a killing with the first James Bond movie ("Dr. No"), that studios began to view franchises as cash cows. With the subsequent success of the "Pink Panther" and "Planet of the Apes" movies, the industry became increasingly eager to turn its blockbusters into ongoing sagas. This filmmaking approach went into hyperdrive in 1977 with the unprecedented phenomenon of "Star Wars." From that point forward, Hollywood quickly became a franchise-driven town.

Amazon Studios has changed its name to Amazon MGM Studios, announced Pablo Iacoviello, director of monetization for local originals at the studio since April.
During his keynote address to a packed audience at the TV forum Iberseries & Platino Industria, which kicked off Oct. 3 in Madrid, Iacoviello broke the announcement as he held forth on how the studio continues to explore new local production opportunities and distribution strategies.
The name change is a natural progression from the news in May when the platform giant launched Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, a worldwide international film and TV distribution unit that sells Amazon originals and MGM’s deep vault of titles.
Most of the major U.S. studios have been resorting to mixed models of streaming and licensing in recent months as they seek to ensure the viability of content economics.

A woman who killed an 87-year-old Broadway singing coach by shoving her onto a Manhattan sidewalk has avoided a lengthy prison sentence by pleading guilty to manslaughter on Wednesday, and will instead serve eight years behind bars.
Lauren Pazienza, 28, teared up in court as she admitted to randomly attacking Barbara Maier Gustern on March 10, 2022. Gustern, whose students included Blondie singer Debbie Harry, lay bleeding on a sidewalk as Pazienza walked away, prosecutors said. She died five days later.
“Today’s plea holds Pazienza accountable for her deadly actions,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement.
Gustern’s relatives, some of whom were in court, said they were disappointed with Pazienza’s plea deal and agreed-upon prison sentence — a fraction of the maximum 25 years she would have faced if convicted at trial.
Pazienza’s lawyer Arthur Aidala declined to comment.

Talk about multiverses. In a parallel cosmos that is apparently just around the corner from you right now, a bunch of boys — and grown men — are living a life so different from yours that they might as well be aliens. You can see them in Owen Kline’s Directors’ Fortnight title Funny Pages, hanging out all day in a store that sells old comics, arguing about the finer plot points in the first superhero comics and the originality or otherwise of their own homemade zines.
They’re not an altogether easy watch. The strip lighting in the shop is unforgiving — and you just don’t want to see them eat, although some of them do little else. For these boys, it is seemingly a point of principle to talk with your mouth full. They are only interested in talking to each other, so it doesn’t really matter.

Barbara Gustern seemed invincible. At 87 years old, the Manhattan vocal coach had more stamina than the average college student. Nearly every day, she would teach students in her Chelsea apartment for eight hours before attending their concerts at night. Over the years, her clientele included Blondie’s Debbie Harry, avant-garde heroine Diamanda Galás, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna, Broadway performers, downtown firebrands, and anyone who wanted to learn to sing. When it was time to hit a show to see her pupils, she’d walk up to a mile and a half.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a death investigation on the 500 block of N. Carmelina Ave. in Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. White would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17. White is believed to have died Thursday night at her Brentwood home.
White’s agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed her death to Variety. “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.

Multiple Emmy Award-winning actress and animal rights activist Betty White, who most famously starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, has died, just days short of her 100th birthday. White passed peacefully Thursday night at her home, her agent Jeff Witjas confirmed to Deadline.
“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.”

Although White is most notably known for playing sweet and naive Rose in The Golden Girls from 1985-1992, her career began more than four decades prior in her adopted home of Los Angeles.

The story of three women who embark on a European train-ride tour in honor of their dearly departed friend, “Off the Rails” is inevitably colored by the 2020 death of Kelly Preston, who delivers her final screen performance as a member of this sorrowful trio. Such sentimental circumstances, however, can’t overshadow the creakiness of Jules Williamson’s film, which despite its title Laughs, tears, healing and incessant Blondie songs are all part of its rickety package, none of which is likely to help it make inroads with audiences when it debuts in theaters and on VOD on Dec. 10.
A high tolerance for corniness and the sound of Debbie Harry’s voice are prerequisites for “Off the Rails,” whose tale swiftly reunites lonely Kate (Jenny Seagrove), motherly Liz (Sally Phillips) and discontent actress Cassie (Preston) for the funeral of their fourth musketeer, Anna. Following a service at which Anna’s mother (a cameoing Judi Dench) speaks,...

"Men never fail to let me down." Screen Media Films has debuted the official US trailer for an indie comedy titled Off the Rails, arriving in the US this December. It already opened first in the UK during the summer earlier in the year. Three fifty-something women set out to repeat their post-graduation trip across Europe adventures of their youth, after their close friend passes away leaving them rail tickets, and a final request: to take her teenage daughter with them. Oh this sounds like so much fun! Always amusing watching people try to make sense of European travel. This stars Kelly Preston, Jenny Seagrove, Sally Phillips, with newcomer Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips, as well as appearances by Ben Miller, Franco Nero, and Judi Dench. Featuring the music of Blondie! Of course. The place they're supposed to go is the Palma Cathedral on the island of Mallorca, to see "God's Disco Ball" a natural phenomenon.

Gag-a-day cartoons are a wonderful and mysterious art, a triumph of style and viewpoint, precise phrasing and engaging drawing, with a clear point of view and a world that can be encapsulated in four panels but expands with four new panels every day for as long as the cartoonist is inspired.
Well, good gag-a-day cartoons are like that. We also have Blondie and Garfield.
Bug Martini , though, is a good gag-a-day cartoon. It’s been running for about a dozen years, and its creator, Adam Huber, finally put together a physical-book collection of the strip this past year, gathering the first year of strips under the title Born a Doofus.
So this book starts with the first strip and runs through the strip for October 18, 2010 . It also includes, in the back, about a dozen sketchbook pages about the pre-history of his “bug” main character, but the real draw is the comics themselves,...

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has bought the assets of Sonar Entertainment, the well-established production entity built by Robert Halmi Sr.
The up-front cost is just $19.5 million, but the ultimate valuation will likely grow over time, as future licensing proceeds will also be split with Sonar. The initial payment is considered an advance, which will be recouped by Chicken Soup upon the sale or licensing of certain TV rights. About $1 billion has been invested into film and TV projects controlled by Sonar, according to the official deal announcement. Among the company’s current series are Hunters on Amazon Prime Video and the soon-to-premiere Mysterious Benedict Society on Disney+.
Screen Media, a division of Csse, will distribute Sonar’s library of more than 1,000 titles. Those offerings include Hal Roach Studios shorts like Little Rascals, Laurel & Hardy and Blondie and miniseries like Lonesome Dove and Dinotopia.
The acquisition covers 372 TV series and more than 700 Films.

Miley Cyrus delivered a rousing rendition of Mazzy Star’s classic “Fade Into You” as part of the singer’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.
Performing from inside a miniaturized bedroom, Cyrus performed a faithful version of the 1993 hit, albeit with one major difference: Rather than mimicking Hope Sandoval’s trademark sedate vocals, Cyrus brought a full-throated approach to the track’s chorus.

When Debbie Harry first told Rolling Stone about her memoir, Face It, earlier this year, she promised it would contain “an overview of the way [Blondie] carried on through all that time, from my sort of warped little perspective.” But when it came out, it turned out to be even more eye-opening than she had suggested.
In the book, she revealed that she had always viewed “Blondie” as a character she played. Adopted when she was only six months old, Harry questioned who she really was as she drifted from her hippie-ish first band,...

Though their subjects and locales are different, every David Simon show has certain common themes about individuals being crushed by the weight of American institutions. And every David Simon show ends more or less the same way: with a musical montage summing up that show’s themes while giving us a sense of what all the characters will be doing in the immediate future.
Or, rather, every David Simon show has ended that way until now.

I saw Roky Erickson in performance for the last time on September 5th, 2017, at Rough Trade Records in Brooklyn. Opera star Marina Rebeka will be profiled in a new one-off documentary that London-based Starline will sell internationally. “Marina Rebeka: Blessings of Will and Talent” tells the story of the Latvian soprano hailed as “stupendous” by Placido Domingo and who has performed at La Scala in Italy, London’s Royal Opera House, and the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall in New York.
