New York Shouldn’T Have Given The X-men A Parking Pass
Let’s say you’ve done something really stupid. No, let’s say I’ve done something really stupid; that’s more realistic. There are many answers I could give when someone asked me, “Why did you do that?” However, I presently subscribe to the theory championed by no less a personage than Harlan Ellison. The best answer is, “It seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Sometimes, however, not even that answer – which, unlike me, is direct and to the point – will suffice. There are some stupid things for which the answer, “It seemed like a good idea at the time,” will not work because they are so monumentally stupid that they could never have seemed like a good idea at any time. Things like Clippy, New Coke, and X-Men Gold #1.

It seemed like a good idea at the time: create a contest that would invite the winning viewers into a TV studio for a live countdown to usher in 2017 during a New Year’s Eve broadcast. However, as executed by Australian show “The Loop”, something clearly didn’t go as planned when the competition winners appeared […]...

Update: Video of the event has emerged, so you can watch that at the very bottom of this post.
Yesterday, Disney and Lucasfilm held a press junket for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in Los Angeles. I was lucky enough to attend the event, which was moderated by J.J. Abrams' friend Mindy Kaling, and I transcribed all of the important bits of information that were revealed. I've written about a couple of them this morning already, but this article is going to include a bulk of the conversation from panelists Abrams, writer Lawrence Kasdan, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, and actors Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, and Adam Driver.
First up, I'll single out a few little tidbits about the movie you might be interested in knowing about. Abrams said there is Not a post-credits scene on this film, and there...

Jennifer Lawrence attended the Oscars for the third time this year, and instead of bringing her family, the Best Supporting Actress nominee invited her best friend Laura to attend the star-studded event. It seemed like a good idea at the time. "She was a terrible influence on me," the American Hustle star, 23, admitted on NBC's Late Night With Seth Meyers Wednesday. "We left and then she was like, 'Meet me at the bar.' So I snuck out and I was like, 'Oh, my god!' I can't do this!' And she was like, 'You can do whatever you want!' We ran into Brad Pitt and she was like, 'Get Brad Pitt over here!' I was like, 'I can't do that!' And she was like,...

The last time we saw Harrison Ford at Comic-Con, he was brought on stage in handcuffs, a nod to the actor's hesitation on doing anything fanboy-related. This year, he seems to have arrived under his own volition, as he looks to hype his upcoming film, "Ender's Game."
The movie, based on the popular novel by Orson Scott Card, takes place in the future, with Ford playing Colonel Hyrum Graff, an officer who helps recruit children in the hopes that they will become the next great military leaders and help the humans defeat the Formics, an alien race that has attacked Earth.
Before interviewing Ford, it was politely suggested to me that I not ask him about the new "Star Wars" movie. This was understandable, considering his previous responses to anything "Episode VII"-related. Instead we asked about his participation in a "Star Wars" skit on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" back in April,...

Nobody's perfect, but Ryan Gosling comes pretty damn close. Once upon a time, Hollywood's Prince Charming bought out some lucky little lady's entire haul of Girl Scout Cookies, then handed the sweets out to strangers on the road. On Wednesday's Jimmy Kimmel Live, the funnyman got Ryan to explain his endearingly charitable feat. Jimmy explained that "five or six years ago," two of his friends encountered the Gangster Squad star in Santa Monica, Calif., and the actor "handed them several boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and then drove off." Ryan begrudgingly confirmed that it was him, but told Jimmy, "It seemed like a good idea at the time…Look, I regret...

Spanish filmmaker Ciro Altabas finally manifested his love for video games in his new documentary "Hobby," about a journey to Japan to investigate the rise of video game fan culture. The expedition turned out to be one of the best times of his life as he realized his life long love of video games. The film is available to view now on SnagFilms (and below). What it's really about: "Nintendo. Yeah. Or, well, video-games in general. Stormtroopers, also. Theme parks about Spain. Star Wars fights. Nostalgia. Sake. What it's really about, that's a weir-Hobbies, that's it. Hobbies." On filming his passion: "It seemed like a good idea at the time. I studied Audiovisual Communication in Madrid and then Filmmaking in London. I've done five shorts, the 'Hobby' documentary, written for television and way too many almost-but-not-quite-produced features. Now I teach video-games at my old University, giving my life a much needed.

One of these days, someone should really start a monthly column called It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time (copyright pending), cataloging all of the films that, for whatever reason, keyed into the time of their release perfectly, but became anachronistic even before the initial run was finished. Without a doubt, Love Story would be included, so attuned is it to the netherspace between the fading counter-culture and the blockbuster melodrama (which dovetail with more evenly than anyone might have guessed). Its success was instantaneous, but it can hardly be viewed today as anything other than a relic, not least of which because of its sexual politics and headlining by the briefly famous Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal.

Actor known for her roles in The Ipcress File and Crossroads
The actor Sue Lloyd, who has died aged 72, exuded glamour and sophistication on screen in the 1960s, before finding renewed fame two decades later as Barbara Hunter in 714 episodes of the TV soap opera Crossroads. But it took two attempts by the serial's producers to persuade her to join a programme that was roundly abused by the critics.
"My initial reaction was to be a bit sniffy about it," Lloyd recalled in her 1998 autobiography, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. "The soap was renowned for its wobbly scenery, bizarre storylines and regular slaughtering by the critics. Why would I, just back from filming [Revenge of] The Pink Panther with Peter Sellers in the south of France and about to embark on the comedy The Upchat Line with John Alderton, want to get involved in a project like that?...

He has nearly 50 movie and TV credits to his name, but Mel Gibson says he doesn't care if he's ever in front of a camera again. "I could easily not act again. It's not a problem," the troubled actor-filmmaker, 55, tells Deadline Hollywood in his first major interview since a series of leaked audiotapes documenting his rants to ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva dominated summer headlines. Gibson adds that he's going to work again with Randy Wallace, who wrote the script for the 1995 Best Picture Oscar winner Braveheart. While Gibson may seem willing to give up and not look back on his career,...

Mel Gibson is adamant he was not "offended" when he was cut from the cast of The Hangover sequel - he simply decided to "let that go" and "move on".
The troubled actor was hired to play the role of a tattoo artist in upcoming movie The Hangover Part II opposite the original film's stars, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha and Ed Helms.
The casting came after a tough few months for Gibson, who hit headlines when he was accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, while their taped arguments subsequently emerged on the internet.
Gibson never got to film the cameo as he was cut from the movie before he was due on set, with director Todd Phillips admitting the Braveheart star did not have "the full support of my entire cast and crew."
But the actor insists he is not bitter about his dismissal, telling Deadline.com, "You have to let that go. I sat here and talked to Todd about it. I like Todd. How could you not like Todd? He's smart and he's gifted and so are the other people in the film. It's okay. You just have to let that go... It shows you a few things. You just move on and go okay. I'm not greatly offended by it. If you've spent any considerable length of time watching film then you know there are bad movies -- and then there are the really bad ones. You can identify these stinkers because there's something just not quite right about them. Sometimes it's their budget (or lack of one). On other occasions money wasn't the problem; it was the acting, or the writing, or the special effects, or the over-the-top concept. Sometimes it's several of these reasons, and on really spectacular occasions, when the stars and moon are in alignment, it could be all of these things.
Throughout my cinemaphile life I've seen my share of bad movies. Some of them are even ones that I like for pure nostalgic reasons, or because I like to root for the underdog that's going uop against the deep pockets of the Hollywood machine, or because the premise is so absurdly high concept ("Look!

As I mentioned in the previous entry, my original plan was to get up relatively early on Sunday, grab a bite of breakfast, and then drive home from Marfa at a leisurely pace. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Instead, I got up relatively early, packed my car, checked out of my hotel, and headed out for a brunch sponsored by the Texas Film Commission. The brunch was held in an area of town that used to be Fort Russell -- my grandfather was stationed in Marfa during WWII and I wonder if he'd recognize the area now. He might recognize the building we were in, as it's being restored to its former decor from the time when General Patton was stationed there. The building currently houses the International Woman's Foundation.
It was a lovely brunch, meant to honor Mother's Day but all us females received corsages.

Two and a Half Torches (Out of Five)
Okay, I'm kinda bummed. After last week's terrific premiere of V, last night's episode was decidedly underwhelming.
Sure, the "plot thickened" more or less, but I'm having a hard time remembering anything particularly memorable about the episode (and I took notes!).
Ironically, the episode was titled "There Is No Normal Anymore," but except for an occasional picket sign, things are actually seeming pretty darn normal.
From interviews with the producers, I know that they were worried that since the story is a remake and most people are familiar with its basic plot elements, they were determined to get to the establishment of the "resistance movement" as quickly as possible.

It seemed like a good idea at the time-- give the sequel to one of Fox's soap opera hits to skinflick auteur Russ Meyer in the heady days of X-rated prosperity. Ok, it didn't work out so well at the boxoffice, but it did give us a touchstone for big studio psychotronic insanity that has yet to be matched. This trailer is mainly a staged photo shoot selling Russ-as-auteur.
