The Palisades Fire has engulfed Palisades Charter High School, a school that has long been a popular location for Hollywood productions.
NBC Los Angeles reported on Tuesday night that the fire spread through several structures at the Pchs campus, and had all but destroyed the adjacent Theater Palisades.
Earlier in the day, Pchs posted a note on its website that the school was closed due to the Palisades Fire.
As the fires continued to rage, California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, and nearly 30,000 people have been ordered to evacuate.
Pchs is a popular location for Hollywood productions. The school has featured prominently in films, most notably Brian De Palma’s 1976 horror classic Carrie, where it was dubbed Bates High School in the movie. The school also featured heavily in Danny Steinmann’s 1984 teen vigilante movie Savage Streets, the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday, the Teen Wolf TV series,...

Plenty of bananas and a gruesomely gorgeous wedding cake get praise in musical moments in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Several 80s artists like Donna Summer, Jimmy Buffet and The Bee Gees have songs featured in the film, which is a followup to the 1988 original starring Michael Keaton as the ghost with the most, Winona Ryder as goth girl Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia’s stepmother Delia Deetz.
Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega joins the sequel in addition to other newcomers, and she has another fun dance moment set to one of the songs in the film’s soundtrack below. A choir sings a beautiful rendition of “Day-o” which can be heard in the film’s trailer. Of course, there wouldn’t be a musical dance moment — or more — without some possessed bodies and souls. The Afterlife provides ample opportunity to feature more genre songs from the 80s, as...

I’ve always felt that the 1979 horror film Tourist Trap (watch it Here) deserves a lot more respect and attention than it gets – and that star Chuck Connors (best known for The Rifleman) deserved the “genre icon” career he was aiming for when he signed on for the movie. Barbara Crampton is someone who did achieve a genre icon career, and she clearly believes there was something great going on with Tourist Trap, because our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that she is producing a remake of the film!
Crampton is the Vice President of Production & Development at Alliance Media Partners, and the company has just acquired the rights to make a new version of Tourist Trap. Crampton will be producing the film alongside Bob Portal, who is Amp’s Managing Director & Head of Production.
Produced by Full Moon founder Charles Band, the original Tourist Trap stars Connors as Mr.

Piper Laurie, the three-time Oscar nominee whose seven decade acting career included iconic roles in “The Hustler” and “Carrie,” has died at the age of 91. The news was confirmed to IndieWire by Laurie’s ex-husband, critic Joe Morganstern.
Born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, Michigan in 1932, Laurie changed her name after moving to Hollywood and signing with Universal Pictures in 1949. She enjoyed early success in films like the Ronald Reagan-led “Louisa,” but soon moved to New York to focus on developing her acting craft on stage. When she returned to Hollywood to star in “The Hustler” in 1961, she earned her first Oscar nomination for her role as Sarah Packard in the iconic tale of pool hall gambling gone awry.
Firmly established as a dramatic actress, Laurie continued to work steadily in film and television for the next six decades. Her villainous turn as Margaret White, the hyper-religious mother in Brian De Palma’s “Carrie,...

2020, a bad year for many things, has actually been a good year for romantic comedy TV shows. Two of the best of the year, the Hulu "reboot" of High Fidelity and HBO Max's Love Life, seem to have little in common at first glance. Sure, they each have a young female lead, but Zoe Kravitz's Rob and Anna Kendrick's Darby couldn't be more different personality-wise. What they have in common is a fully realized female protagonist whose personal growth is more important than her love life.
Romance is at the heart of each show - and it's an important part of each season finale, to be sure, but Darby's and Rob's arcs are journeys in which they learn more about themselves and evolve into the best version of themselves. Only then do they become ready for a partner. Sadly, most female-led romantic comedy shows do not afford their main characters this,...

Ever since Carrie in 1976, many of Stephen King's works have been adapted for both the small and the large screens. As King's books are often better than the screen adaptations, there have been a fair few disappointments over the years, although there have been a number of excellent adaptations too, with It, Salem's Lot, and Doctor Sleep standing among them.

The Stephen King wagon train keeps on rolling, and many more adaptations are planned. Some are so far unconfirmed and the basis of rumor, but the following are those that have been officially confirmed.

The film has topped a poll for the most rewatchable film. Its director, Mike Newell, sees why. So why would Curtis, who wrote the script, rather rewatch Elf?
Richard Curtis rarely rewatches Four Weddings and a Funeral. “There isn’t a natural circumstance where I say: ‘I’ll tell you what I’ll do for the next two hours, see one of my films.’” Partly, it is knowing the punchlines. Partly, it is being a bit busy. On the wall of Curtis’s Notting Hill home office, just out of frame of his laptop camera, are six Post-it reminders of pre-Christmas tasks. Wrap presents? Make pud? Nope: rewrite a film, cast an online panto, appoint a new CEO for Comic Relief. Et cetera.
Anyway, for those of us a bit less pressed, things are different. Four Weddings – in which Hugh Grant’s stuttering bachelor, in a series of morning suits,...

Almost since he became a best-selling author, Stephen King has seen his work adapted for the movies and television.
Just two years after his first novel, 1974’s Carrie, was published, a film version directed by Brian De Palma was a massive hit, earning Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. The floodgates opened after that, with a TV miniseries based on his second novel, ‘Salem’s Lot (1979), Stanley Kubrick’s high-profile film of The Shining (1980), Creepshow (1982), Cujo (1983), The Dead Zone (1983), Christine (1983), Children of the Corn (1984), Firestarter (1984), Silver Bullet (1985), and many more coming quickly during the next few years.
King adaptations continued well into the late 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, although the quality began to trail off and many were either quickie cash-ins, direct-to-video clunkers or both. There were high points, of course: Pet Sematary (1989), Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), the TV miniseries of The Stand (1994), Dolores Claiborne (1995), 1408 (2007), and The Mist (2007) are all standouts.

As one of the most heavily adapted authors on the planet, it isn’t surprising that the quality of the many movies and TV shows based on the works of Stephen King have been wildly inconsistent over the decades. For every Carrie, The Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me or The Shining there’s a Dreamcatcher, The Dark Tower or Bag of Bones.
For the most part, King’s novels and short stories have fared much better on the small screen, at least when there hasn’t already been a great movie made out of the source material. For instance, a lot of people might not even be aware that The Shining and Carrie were the subjects of TV shows, which is probably for the best. However, the likes of 11.22.63, Mr. Mercedes and The Outsider have all been solid at the very least.
One of the more forgotten efforts, though, was Under the Dome,...

Nearly a quarter-century has gone by since cult horror classic “The Craft” tapped into a pre-Harry Potter fascination with witches, giving teenage audiences a sense of how empowering it might feel for four young women, persecuted by date-rapey d-bags and openly racist prom queens, to invoke a little black magic in their desire to get even. That surprise hit was creaky even by 1996 standards, but its Goth-grunge attitude was hella edgy by comparison with “Clueless” and other clean-scrubbed YA offerings of the time, and one would hope that a Blumhouse follow-up made in the year 2020 might find a way to feel similarly avant-garde.
Instead, “Blumhouse’s The Craft: Legacy” comes across as “The Craft: Lite,” a watered-down, PG-13 reboot in which the outsiders are no longer treated as freaks, and their mission amounts to enlightening Neanderthal classmates and other assorted chauvinists about the risks of underestimating young women. Celebrated shorts director Jill Gevargizian steps it up a notch with this sumptuously shot low-rent serial killer drama; a mature, empathetic adaptation of her well-regarded short of the same name, that expands on its eponymous lead in all the right ways.
Surprisingly powerful in its execution, Gevargizian’s full-blooded The Stylist tackles gentle loner Claire (Najarra Townsend); a hair stylist with a murderous secret, who uses her trusted (and largely anonymous) position cutting hair to silently obsess over the lives of her glamorous customers, before ending them for good. But when a particularly friendly new bride-to-be (indie horror legend Brea Grant) gets a little too close for comfort, Claire finds her hyper-repressed exterior slowly starting to break apart at the seams, with the violent killer within sprawling out for all to see.

Brian De Palma's adaptation of Stephen King's hit novel Carrie was a massive critical and box office success. The film started the Stephen King adaptation craze that lasts to this very day and spawned many imitators and rip-offs. However, some films took the spirit of Carrie and infused it into their own films, making them something special that still evoked the sensibilities of King's creation.

“What an excellent day for an exorcism.”
-Linda Blair, “The Exorcist” (1973)
If asked to describe a typical “Oscar” film, you’d likely hear phrases like “biopic” or “sprawling epic.” If there’s a genre that’s been grievously undervalued, and to a greater extent, disrespected within the industry space, it’s horror. It can be argued that it’s one of two genres that comes with an embedded bias, preventing wide acceptance (the other being “musicals”). Academy voters are one problem, but critics and awards analysts are another. Qualifying phrases like “highbrow” or “surprisingly smart” have to be used to give permission for analysts and voters to give “serious” consideration for annual top 10 lists and ballots.
The definition of what constitutes “horror” has been debated for decades. If you yell into the vacuum of Oscar historians asking, “What is the last horror film to be embraced by the Academy...

Zac Efron will star in “Firestarter,” a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel.
The film centers on a young girl who develops pyrokinetic powers and the ability to see the future. She is abducted by a mysterious government agency that plans to weaponize her superhuman skills. The film is backed by Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Weed Road Productions.
Efron, who first came to fame in the rosy “High School Musical” franchise, has shown his darker side in certain projects, playing Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” This feels in that vein. Hospitalization proves more than usually fatal in “12 Hour Shift,” a bloody black comedy from actress turned writer-director Brea Grant. This clever mix of the farcical and macabre finds shady nurse Angela Bettis’ sideline in illicit organ harvesting going seriously awry during an extra-long work stint at a 1999 Arkansas care facility. Although closer to the twistedly gallows-humorous likes of “The Hospital” and Scorcese’s underrated “Bringing Out the Dead” than the sizable subgenre of hospital horror mellers, it will most likely find an appreciative initial audience among genre fans. Magnet plans release to available theaters and on demand Oct. 2, following a brief, Covid-hobbled festival tour.
Though she started out in prestige dramatic roles for Zeffirelli and James Mangold, Bettis became a favorite for horror aficionados as of 2002, via title roles in both indie cult object “May” and a TV “Carrie.” Her forays into that territory invariably up the movie’s game,...

Very few people have found their work adapted for both the big and small screen as regularly as prolific author Stephen King, who has proven to be a goldmine for Hollywood ever since horror classic Carrie was first released all the way back in 1976.
Since then, the Stephen King well has been revisited countless times with 52 movies and 30 TV shows materializing, covering everything from box office smash hits to colossal failures, spawning cult favorites and all-time greats in a variety of genres that include such diverse output as The Running Man and The Shining to The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption.
The latest boom period is still ongoing, with The Stand set to debut on CBS in December and a further eight shows in various stages of development, not to mention eleven feature-length films. The royalties alone that King is raking in must be seriously impressive, and that number...

It used to be that multiple delays to a movie’s release date were a sign that something was wrong with the project. But in the case of Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants,” the fact that even a global coronavirus pandemic isn’t forcing the movie to budge from its drop-dead Aug. 28 opening (after multiple postponements back when moviegoing was thought to be safe for one’s health) is what looks like a red flag. Why would Disney, which acquired the project when it bought Fox last year, dump this orphaned X-Men spinoff into theaters mere days before launching “Mulan” on its proprietary streaming platform?
The answer: because Disney couldn’t keep delaying it forever, but also because this inclusive, female-empowering, youth-centric addition to the already overcrowded X-Men universe had lost its luster. After having been greenlit as a fresh take on a successful franchise by a hot up-and-coming director,...

For The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw, writer/director Thomas Robert Lee transports viewers to a small community in 1973 that is on the brink of annihilation. Pestilence has ravaged the land, the mortality rates for children in the area are horrifically high and the only person who is seemingly untouched by these unfortunate occurrences is Agatha Earnshaw (Catherine Walker), who lives in exile outside the tight-knit religious colony. She is the only resident who seems to be thriving, and always has plenty to eat, but she doesn’t share her bounty with the other villagers as they have long suspected that Agatha has pledged her allegiance to dark forces, and so she feels no remorse about letting those who wish her ill suffer in turn.
But it’s Agatha’s secret that is the biggest reason she has no desire to co-mingle with the other residents: she has a daughter named...

What do Heathers, Carrie, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch all have in common? They were all the unfortunate contenders that were picked to have been in Riverdale's musical episodes. Musical episodes are pretty hit or miss, and let's just say there have been three strikes already with Riverdale's episodes. There's no doubt that the stars in Riverdale have talent to boot and they sing their hearts out with every number. But does that mean they should've done it?

Riverdale has a knack for musical episodes and season 3, episode 16 brought viewers a Heathers-themed musical episode. The teens of Riverdale High put on a high school production of Heathers: The Musical in the episode "Chapter 51: Big Fun." Unlike the Carrie-themed episode, audiences received even more angsty numbers and more dramatic plot revelations, all within the standard 42-minute runtime.

A “creepy” a cappella group at Dylan Holmes Williams’ university led the filmmaker to make a dark comedy short titled “The Devil’s Harmony,” about a bullied teenage girl who uses her music group to get revenge on her fellow classmates.
“I had the original idea because I was making a music video for an a cappella club and I realized how incredibly creepy they are, and I realized that that could be a starting point for a high school horror short,” Williams, one of the finalists in TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival, told TheWrap. “Some of them have seen it, one of them is now a director, and he said it’s a very accurate description of what it’s like to be in an a cappella group. To say that Stephen King is the master of horror literature is such an understatement that its practically a cliché. The man behind such works as It, The Shining, Carrie, and Cujo has kept readers and viewers awake at night since the 70s and has no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

As scary as his works are, people often forget that the guy isn't some one-trick-pony. In fact, King has written a host of other works in other genres. While they might skip on the gruesome and grim at times, they're definitely worth just as much attention as his works of horror.

Stephen King has written almost a hundred novels over his long and decorated career. From classics like It, Carrie, and The Shining, to more genre-bending stories such as The Gunslinger, The Green Mile, and The Institution. Likewise, his films carry the same Stephen-King-trademark that makes them distinct and recognizable.

Hollywood has a horror of the twin taboos of intercourse and menstruation. But female writers and directors are starting to change the way women’s bodies are portrayed on screen
When it comes to taboo subjects on screen, period sex serves up a double whammy. Intercourse and menstruation – who wants to see that, right? Certainly not Hollywood. In the history of cinema, the vanishingly rare instances of sexual flow-down are portrayed with more focus on the horror of women “surfing the crimson wave”, as Cher from Clueless puts it, rather than reducing the stigma.
Who can forget the moment, in both the original 1976 Carrie and 2013 remake, when the titular heroine is terrified when she discovers blood coming out of her vagina in the school showers? A similar scene of fright occurs when Brooke Shields’s young castaway Emmeline gets her period for the first time in The Blue Lagoon (1980), while...

Brian De Palma's Carrie is all but unanimously praised as one of the scariest horror movies of all time. Based on Stephen King's first published novel, the story centers on Carrie (Sissy Spacek), a timid teenage girl who is bullied in school by popular girls and tormented at home by her fanatically religious mother (Piper Laurie). Like the novel, the movie became a smash hit, turning a $1.8 million investment into a $33.8 million moneymaker.

The 1970s brought some of the greatest horror movies of all time. As the “New Hollywood” movement took over the industry, movies in general were becoming darker and grittier, with a rebellious, staunchly anti-establishment point of view. It didn’t take long for this nihilism to bleed into the horror genre.
