Ripped from her life of domesticity, Santosh (Shahana Goswami), a young widow now desperate to support herself, accepts an opportunity to inherit her husband’s job as a police officer in the rural badlands of India. Quickly taken under the wing of Sharma (Sunita Rajwar), a charismatic and commanding older female inspector, Santosh begins an investigation into a low-caste girl’s brutal murder that plunges her into a gritty world of crime and corruption, forcing her to confront not only the brokenness of the system around her, but her own place within it.

“Leave them alone.” That’s what Jared Harris, the “Mad Men,” “The Crown,” and Chernobyl star thinks about the original Harry Potter films.
The twice Emmy-nominated actor is, of course, the son of the late actor and singer Richard Harris (and brother to director Damian Harris and actor Jamie Harris). Richard played Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films before he died. For the later films, Richard was replaced by Michael Gambon.
With HBO planning a reboot of the J.K. Rowling series for television, teasing a more detailed adaptation of the beloved books, The Independent asked Jared Harris if he had any interest in taking on the role initially played by his father.
Not only did he bat that away with a “no, thank you,” he said something that Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders maybe do not want to hear: “Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand.

The U.K. has selected Santosh, an Indian police procedural from director Sandhya Suri, to represent the country in the 2025 Oscars in the best international feature category.
Shahana Goswami stars as the titular Santosh, a driven young Hindu widow who inherits her husband’s job as a police constable thanks to a government scheme. She finds herself caught up in institutional corruption even as she warms to working with rough-edged veteran detective Inspector Sharma (Sunita Rajwar) on a brutal murder case involving a teenage girl from the lower caste Dalit community.
Santosh premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section this year, where it was quickly snatched up for North America by Metrograph Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review called the feature “gripping and engrossing” singling out Suri’s screenplay for praise. “Instead of unwieldy expository dialogue, Suri relies on conversations between Santosh and Sharma to shed light on the forces — a discriminatory society,...

In previous episodes of The Best Movie You Never Saw, I’ve talked a little bit about how much I like the eighties and nineties actor Tom Berenger. From Platoon through Shoot to Kill and The Substitute, he was a great character actor with some serious action chops. Were he to have come along in another era, he could have easily been an action star in the vein of Liam Neeson or Gerard Butler, but in his heyday, audiences seemed to prefer larger-than-life heroes. Yet, some of his movies proved to be modestly successful, and one of the more intruding examples is the 1993 movie Sniper, which is probably the best movie you ever saw that got nine sequels.
In it, Berenger plays Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett, a legendary sniper with many confirmed kills under his belt. His work nowadays is embroiled in the war on drugs, with him having...

Living a fulfilling life and enjoying a decorated career with classics like Camelot and The Field, Richard Harris certainly left behind a legacy to remember him by. But while most of his films turned him into a veteran star, it was the Harry Potter franchise that made him popular among modern audiences.
Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore | Warner Bros.
However, despite the potential of the films, given the popularity of J.K Rowling’s novels, Richard Harris was initially reluctant to take on the role of Albus Dumbledore. At the age of 70, Harris was unwilling to commit to a franchise that would demand his involvement in multiple sequels. But things surprisingly changed after he faced a literal threat.

Metrograph Pictures will distribute the film theatrically, with additional release details to be announced at a later date. MK2 Films represents the movie in international markets.
“Santosh” marks the narrative feature debut of Suri, whose breakout documentary “I For India” competed at Sundance. Her short film “The Field” was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Short Film in 2019, and won Best International Short at Toronto in 2018.
“Santosh” received strong reviews following its Cannes premiere, with Variety called it a “whip-smart film” that “speaks the language of a fiercely feminist empowerment saga”.

Sandhya Suri’s fiction feature debut “Santosh,” which bows in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard strand, has unveiled its first clip.
In the film, a government scheme sees newly widowed Santosh inherit her slain husband’s job as a police constable in the rural badlands of northern India. When an underage girl from one of India’s so-called “lower castes” is murdered, Santosh is pulled into the investigation by charismatic feminist inspector Sharma.
Suri is known for her documentaries “I for India” (2005), which bowed at Sundance, and “Around India with a Movie Camera” (2018) and Toronto-winning and BAFTA nominated fiction short “The Field” (2018). The “Santosh” script, which predates “The Field,” participated in the Sundance lab. “I was researching things about violence against women and trying to make a sort of anatomy of a violence and I couldn’t find a way to do it in documentary. Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Upscale crossover sales agent Latido Films has acquired international sales rights to “Re-creation,” directed by legendary Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan, whose “In the Name of the Father” won a Berlin Golden Bear in 1994.
Starring Vicky Krieps, a Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner for “Corsage,” the docu-drama is co-written and co-directed by Irish artist and filmmaker David Merriman (“Rock Against Homelessness”). It will be unveiled to buyers at the European Film Market.
Like Sheridan’s prior five-hour documentary, SkyCrime’s “Murder at the Cottage,” “Re-creation” turns on what the earlier title calls Ireland’s most shocking unresolved crime whose victim, French TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, was battered to death at her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996.
A fiction/reality hybrid feature, “Re-creation” introduces a fictional jury, inspired by Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men,” which sifts through the facts, lies and convenient truths behind the murder, Sheridan told Variety.

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”). Butler (69/20) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Fraser (71/20), Farrell (4/1), Nighy (9/2), and Mescal (9/2).

In his bold 1990 interpretation of Luigi Pirandello’s “Henry IV,” the late and legendary Irish stage, screen and music star Richard Harris utters the immortal lines, “Woe to him who doesn’t know how to wear his mask.”
Even before his breathtaking big-screen triumph 60 years ago as the rugby ruffian Frank Machin in Lindsay Anderson’s film directing debut, “This Sporting Life,” Harris proved adept at juggling personal and professional personas. The word “legendary” gets tossed around pretty easily when discussing important actors, but there’s a huge difference between starring in a lot of important movies, and starring in a lot of movies while leaving everyone you ever met with an epic, semi-fantastical tale about how incredibly drunk you got.
Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Adrian Sibley’s documentary “The Ghost of Richard Harris” tells the story of — you guessed it — Richard Harris, but also his ghost. The Irish actor, musician and poet who starred in films like “This Sporting Life,” “The Field,” “Gladiator” and two “Harry Potter” entries led an extraordinary existence that’s well worth recording for posterity. And in his wake, he left behind three sons who barely knew their real father, and who seek in his absence a little bit of understanding and maybe some closure.

Though it sets out on a ghost hunt, Adrian Sibley’s fitfully fascinating documentary works better as an exploration of its subject’s public and private personas, charting Richard Harris’ rise from local sports star to screen legend via an unexpected heyday as a chart-topping pop star in 1968.
Rather than start with a séance, however, The Ghost of Richard Harris, screening in the Classics section of the Venice Film Festival, opens with the more prosaic sight of the actor’s three sons — Damien, Jared and Jamie — going through their late mother’s lock-up, where they find journals full of poetry, King Arthur’s crown (a prop from 1967’s Camelot) and trinkets from the Harry Potter franchise, in which their father played Dumbledore until his death in 2002, aged 72.
This set-up proves to be somewhat self-defeating, as the three middle-aged men, while reminiscing, then admit that they were packed away to boarding...

“Migrants,” a deeply textured eight-minute animated short about a polar bear cub and its mother driven to look for a new home because of climate change, has been named the best short of View Fest, the short film festival sponsored by the View Conference in Turin, Italy.
The story touched the international jury with its interwoven themes of global warming and immigration told through the experience of the homeless polar bears, who find themselves the subject of scorn and ridicule when they reach a new land populated by unfriendly brown bears. The film was made by fifth-year students at France’s Pole 3D: Zoé Devise, Lucas Lermytte, Hugo Caby, Aubin Kubiak and Antoine Dupriez. “Migrants” received the top prize of $2,000 euros.

Challenges are plentiful when making a short film, says A.M. Lukas, whose short “One Cambodian Family Please for My Pleasure” was selected as a finalist at TheWrap’s 2019 ShortList Film Festival. What matters is how you handle those challenges — a lesson she learned first-hand.
“I had $80,000 and then I lost it; I had Emily Mortimer, and I was about to get on the plane to Fargo, and then we lost Emily; and then we got Emily back. So it was just completely insane every step of the way,” Lukas said in a panel with other ShortList filmmakers Thursday night at the W Hotel Hollywood. You can watch a video clip above of the conversation moderated by TheWrap’s awards editor Steve Pond.
“It’s letting it all happen and then solving each problem,” Lukas said, sharing wise advice from “The Graduate” director Mike Nichols. “You can never know what the film is actually gonna be.

Sandhya Suri, director of “The Field,” had a unique strategy for shooting the key postcoital conversation between two lovers in a darkened corn field of Shahzadpur, India, mid-harvest: The pair’s dialogue was recorded before shooting officially began on the short film — and away from the crew.
“You have to be very careful shooting a scene like that,” Suri told TheWrap. “I wanted the lovers to feel really comfortable and have a lot of space.”
For Suri, the imagery of two illicit lovers in a field fomented the story that ultimately became “The Field,” her first fiction short film and a finalist in TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival. But she also wanted to create a work that allowed a woman to claim her desire and rejected stereotypical depictions of Indian women as the victims of domestic abuse and violence.

Tony winner Ari’el Stachel is set to appear in the A24 Janicza Bravo-directed drama, Zola, opposite title role star Taylour Paige, Colman Domingo, Riley Keough, and Jason Mitchell. It’s based on a series of bizarre 2015 tweets from Aziah ‘Zola’ Wells who detailed a wild 2-day Flordia trip with a sex worker named Jessica, her boyfriend Jarrett, and Jessica’s violent pimp, who went by Z. Ari’el plays Zola’s fiancé, Sean. The film’s source material is a Rolling Stones article Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted by David Kushner. Bravo co-wrote the screenplay with playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Andrew Neel, and Mike Roberts. Stachel, who won the Tony for his role in the stage musical, The Band’s Visit, is repped by Authentic.

For a man whose first claim to screen immortality came when an extraterrestrial freak of nature ripped a hole in his chest and screeched bloody murder in Alien, John Hurt was a hell of an actor. After breaking out in David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with her Oscar-nominated turn as hacker Lisbeth Salander, Rooney Mara has steadily cemented her reputation as one of the most talented young actresses working today with strong performances in Ain’t Them No Bodies Saints, Side Effects and Her. And she doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon, with Stephen Daldry’s Trash, an untitled Terrence Malick project and erotic thriller Carol in the can. Now, we’ve learned that Mara has booked another high-profile gig leading the Jim Sheridan-directed The Secret Scripture.
Mara will replace Jessica Chastain in the drama, “about a 100-year-old woman named Roseanne who recounts her life in mental institutions in a secret memoir.” She will be playing the younger version of Roseanne, “who survives a traumatic childhood only to see her life utterly changed by a vindictive Catholic priest.

It’s March 17th and we can now officially celebrate Ireland’s British born patron saint and stock up on some flicks to get us in the spirit of Saint Patrick.
For a culture enriched with such a storied and turbulent history, ‘Irishness’ is all too often portrayed on screen to the global market as a very primitive and one dimensional identity. It is quite strange considering, the small nation that boasts such a rich artistic tradition, which could rival any on the planet, is so lethargically diluted to idle cliched phrases and beer swilling Paddies.
In spite of the annoying and exhausted stereotypes, there are still a number of movies which embody and adhere to the complexity of Irish identity. Yes, there are a cornucopia of films which depict Irish identity as shamefully opposite. Such inferior silver screen presentations include the likes of Gerard Butler in P.S. I Love You...

Sean Bean dies in everything.
Well, almost everything. There is the rare exception (like Sharpe), but the Yorkshireman is well known for meeting his maker in most of the projects he has been involved in over the years, whether they are films, television series or video games.
Should you have a gruesome desire to see twenty one of his deaths in all of their glory (including all but one of the ones featured in this piece), then the video below (which is referred to in each listing) is for you. Should you also wish for some detail and analysis on ten of the finest, please read on (though do be wary of spoilers if you aren’t familiar with a listed project).
Honourable Mention – The Field (1990)

The website, Little White Lies, recently had an article with Sean Bean in which he lists and provides behind-the-scenes information on his top five on-screen deaths scenes. Making the list was his death scene in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, when Uruk-hai leader Lurtz uses Boromir as a dartboard. Also making the list were Black Death (2010), Patriot Games (1992), The Field (1990) and Equilibrium (2002). To read Bean's descriptions of those scenes click here. Now keep in mind, Sean Bean may be easy to kill on-screen, but that doesn't mean he is any sort of pushover in real life. Take this story for instance, it's from The Daily Mail, it's a fun read. In 2011 Sean Bean went to a local pub with April Summers, a Playboy model three decades younger than him (Nice!). At some point during the night a passerby made a lewd...

Craig here with the third season of Take Three. Today: John Hurt
Take One: Brighton Rock (2010)
Hurt has alternated starring roles with supporting performances since he began acting in films with The Wild and the Willing in 1962. The amount of quality supporting turns he’s delivered over the years is vast: 10 Rillington Place, Midnight Express, The Shout, The Hit, Scandal, The Field, Contact, The Proposition, Melancholia, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are a mere few. His fine turn as accountant Phil Corkery in the Brighton Rock remake (backing up Helen Mirren, Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough and Andy Serkis) is a recent solid addition to the list and deserves due credit. Phil’s a gaunt shambles, but loyal to Mirren’s Ida, his long-time crush. He’s one of the old guard. A proud man accustomed to propping up bars whilst waxing forth about the state of the world. He’s the...
