With a lengthy directorial career since the early 2000s, French director Quentin Dupieux has made a name for himself as an interesting surrealist. It helps that his unique takes on relatable issues are quick watches, with films rarely lasting longer than 80 minutes, and Yannick is a fascinating example of what the creative delivers so effectively.
Dupieux’s twelfth feature opens with a play entitled The Cuckold, as three actors perform on-stage to a half-empty room. While the consistent laughs make it clear that the audience is enjoying the play, the performance is interrupted by Yannick (Raphaël Quenard), a night watchman who stands up to share his displeasure. His reasonings are that he took a day off work and travelled an hour to see this play, yet it does not...

There’s a lot to miss about the ’90s. Video stores. Arcades. Music Television. On and on. One of the many things I miss is the slew of original thrillers that used to grace the big screen. Each one with varying amounts of horror, cheesiness, and sex. Richard Gere and Michael Douglas were involved in more sex and danger in the ’90s than Maureen Prescott’s ghost. But today isn’t about watching the guy from Falling Down rip his expensive and pleated slacks off in a fever of passion. It’s about directing legend Brian De Palma returning to the genre with his very own fever dream Fight Club. A story of split personalities,...

If you wonder what motivates a band after three decades together, ask the Old 97’s. “It feels so unlikely that we’re here, in this moment, in our career and in our lives, and we’ve built something that’s really pretty unimpeachable,” Rhett Miller tells me. We’re sitting in his office — the basement room in his Hudson Valley, New York, home where he writes, seeks inspiration, and often streams solo shows online. “I don’t want to fuck it up.”

On their latest album, American Primitive, the Old 97’s have sandwiched songs about assessing their life choices and serial monogamy with reminders that the world is a doomed and hopeless place and that if you’ve found even a modicum of joy, then that day is a triumph. On the first track, “Falling Down,” they try to frighten you into gratitude via a caustic surf-rock apocalypse built with tremolo electric and strummed acoustic guitars, as frontman Rhett Miller sings, “You’ve got to dance like the world is falling down around you — because it is.

I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Actor Michael Douglas has made a name for himself in the industry by starring in features like Falling Down and Basic Instinct. But in the earlier stages of his career, Douglas made an error in his craft by going method.
Why Michael Douglas thought he was a bad actor Michael Douglas | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Douglas didn’t catch the acting bug the same way most early actors do. His road to superstardom came when he was trying to figure out what to major in while attending college. When he chose acting, however, the Ant-Man star might not have thought that was the best decision.
“My junior year in college they said, ‘You have to declare a major, you can’t keep taking general education courses.’ So I said, ‘I guess I’ll take theatre. My mother’s an actress, my father [is an actor].’ I started acting [and] I was the worst actor you ever seen.

Outwit, outplay, outlast. The basic formula for competing on “Survivor” hasn’t changed since the reality series made its debut on May 31, 2000. Contestants continue to be divided into tribes and forced to form a new society as they adapt to their physical and social surroundings. Players still have to compete in challenges, build their social game and face the elements and hear host Jeff Probst yell his signature phrases like “You gotta dig deep!” and “Wanna know what you’re playing for?” — and they still have to look into his eyes while he utters the dreaded phrase “The tribe has spoken.”

The estate of Sparklehorse, the indie rock project of the late singer-songwriter Mark Linkous, has unveiled a posthumous new album called Bird Machine. The LP arrives today, September 8th via Anti- Records.
Linkous began working on his fifth Sparklehorse album with Steve Albini in 2009. He tragically died by suicide the following year, but he left behind handwritten notes featuring Bird Machine’s title and tracklist — and according to his brother Matt and sister-in-law Melissa, songs that were already close to completion.
The quality of the songs helped Matt and Melissa — who have worked as Linkous’ archivists since his death — decide to finish and release Bird Machine, though Matt called it the hardest choice he’s ever made. “It’s difficult making a choice about someone else’s art, even if you’ve known them all your life and worked with them, even if they were your brother and best friend,...

Those of us that were alive in 1989 can attest that Batmania had taken over. Warner Brothers’ marketing machine was working overtime to make sure that the bat symbol was everywhere. It’s no wonder that when the film came out, it was a giant hit grossing over $400 million dollars. Adjusted to 2023 rates, that is just over $1 billion dollars. When it came time for a sequel, the team got back together again and put out another home run although it would bring in a little bit less at the box office.
That was okay though as this time Warner Brothers had prepared to push the movie with all sorts of merchandise. Just about any type of clothing you could think of had a bat symbol on it. When it came time to make a third film, that’s when it all seemed to fall apart. Tim Burton had a...

Frederic Forrest, who earned critical acclaim opposite Bette Midler in The Rose and collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola, has died. He was 86.
Other than earning both Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for playing Huston Dwyer — the opposite end of a doomed relationship — in 1979’s The Rose, Frederic Forrest is perhaps best known for playing Jay “Chef” Hicks, who loses his head both mentally and literally, in Apocalypse Now the same year. For both performances Forrest was recognized by the National Society of Film Critics as that year’s Best Supporting Actor.
Bette Midler took to Twitter to pay tribute to her co-star, saying Frederic Forrest was a “remarkable actor” and “brilliant human being.”

History ended in the 1990s, at least according to a famous essay by American political scientist Francis Fukuyama. Under his inflammatory headline, Fukuyama argues that the end of the Cold War and the establishment of the United States as the world’s sole global power pole meant that liberal democracies have become the ultimate form of government. As if to prove the argument correct, the US and the UK entered a period of governmental peace and capitalist expansion.
However, those of us who actually lived through the 90s know that the decade wasn’t nearly as rosy as some predicted (or recall). Against the picture of ascendancy painted by Bill Clinton and, eventually, Tony Blair, pop culture reflected the fragmented state of actual lives, and we ended up with some of the most controversial movies of all time.

Paris, May 17 (Ians) By modern standards, Paul Verhoevens 1992 sex noir drama Basic Instinct might not seem that scandalous, but it was a much different story when it first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Michael Douglas, the films male star, said on Wednesday, reports Variety
"Seeing a lot of those sex scenes on the Grand Palais’ huge screen, it was a little overwhelming for a lot of people. We had a very quiet dinner afterwards, everyone was sort of digesting it," Douglas recalled (the cast included Sharon Stone and Jeanne Tripplehorn).
He was at the festival ahead of receiving the Honorary Palm d’Or as a salute to his "brilliant career and commitment to cinema".
‘Basic Instinct’, notes ‘Variety’, followed a weary homicide detective (Douglas) investigating a successful crime writer (Stone). The film was initially given an Nc-17 rating, but was downgraded to an R after studio lobbying.

By modern standards, Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 sex noir “Basic Instinct” might not seem that scandalous. It was a much different story when the film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, star Michael Douglas said.

Michael Douglas is to receive the Honorary Palme d’or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The festival will pay tribute to the actor and hand him the award during the Opening Ceremony on May 16.
“It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities, and excellence in storytelling,” Douglas said.
As part of the tribute, the festival will screen a previously unreleased documentary by Amine Mesta on Douglas titled Michael Douglas, The Prodigal Son on the festival site for two days, from May 14 at 6 pm to May 16 at 6 pm. The doc was produced by Folamour and will be broadcast on Arte.
The doc’s synopsis reads: “This special documentary shows us how Michael, an actor, and producer like his father Kirk, had to embrace their resemblance throughout his remarkable career in order to assert his difference.

Judging by the dispatches from Austin, the premiere of Netflix’s “Beef” was a highlight of this year’s South by Southwest. Created by Lee Sung Jin, whose credits include “Silicon Valley,” “Dave,” “Undone” and “Tuca & Bertie,” the comedy series follows a case of road rage that consumes the involved parties long after they return to their daily lives.
Critics suggest the show’s strength largely resides in Lee’s ability to identify common ground between the dissimilar Danny (Steven Yeun), a struggling independent contractor, and Amy (Ali Wong), the successful owner of a high-end furniture store. Ben Travers (IndieWire) says the writers “cleverly infuse Danny and Amy’s class disparity into their burgeoning battle…without making it the central conflict” and calls the series “‘Falling Down’ split between two leads.” Jeremy Mathai (/Film) hails it as “the funniest and boldest dark comedy since ‘Atlanta.’”

Marvel decided to recruit acting veteran Michael Douglas for their stable of superhero films by casting him in Ant-Man. He would co-star alongside Paul Rudd, who was chosen as the film’s titular character.
But behind-the scenes issues meant the film had to go through a few rewrites. When Rudd started revising parts of the film himself, Douglas couldn’t help voice his concerns.

Douglas is usually known for starring in more grounded films. He mostly built his career off of movies like Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, and Falling Down. Ant-Man was the first time the Oscar-winner participated in, not only a superhero project, but one that heavily utilized special effects. He was attracted to the movie because he was interested in being a part of Marvel’s growing machine.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a unique sort of competition.
In a Q&a interview with The Guardian, Douglas answered fan questions, and one of them was about his wife’s claim on “The Graham Norton Show” that she has him flash her when he loses to her at golf.

“The rules are I have to whip it out if I don’t hit it past the ladies’ tees, which I manage most of the time,” Douglas confirmed. “But there have been times when we’re playing alone, and have to give her a little show because we are competitive.”
He then added for clarification, “But only when I play with my wife.”
Also in the interview, Douglas was asked about a comment he recently made that he channels his characters through his hair.

You recently said you channel your characters through your hair. What do you mean? TopTramp
A long time ago, after Black Rain (1989) with Ridley Scott – where I got this sort of Anglo-afro perm – my dear friend Jack Nicholson said: “What’s with your hair?” I looked at him and said: “Wait a minute. You always act with your hair.” Falling Down (1993) – I have a hairdresser to thank for deciding at the very last minute: “Let’s just go with a flat top.” On Wall Street (1987), Pat Riley, the basketball coach for the Lakers, always had his hair greased back, so I thought the lizard look would work. A lot of times, I do lead with my hair.

Brad Pitt may be one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but the one thing I've always liked is how he is willing to subvert the expectations of his screen persona. Just take his role in "Kalifornia," possibly the most '90s movie of the big 1990s serial killer trend. It came just two years after he'd wowed everyone with his breezy charisma, acting ability, sunny good looks, and impeccable pecs as a charming hustler in "Thelma & Louise." It was a breakthrough role for Pitt, but even at that early stage of his career, he refused to be typecast. So in "Kalifornia" he played a scuzzy redneck murderer on the road with a yuppie couple (Michelle Forbes and David Duchovny) and his naive trailer trash girlfriend.

A vintage nepo baby whose Hollywood career first began in the mid-1960s, Michael Douglas has starred in many hit movies over the decades, but today we are bold enough to argue that the real star of those films was not Douglas himself but his impressive hair, so we’re here to run down the absolute, official, and definitive ranking of performances by the actor’s mane during its decades in the industry.
Not all of Douglas’ films are listed here, to be completely transparent. We have focused on the big ones, nixing fare like the entertaining Behind the Candelabra, for example, because he wore wigs. Offerings like Coma and A Perfect Murder also took a back seat due to the unexceptional appearance of his locks therein.

Itching to ask the actor and director something? Send it our way and we’ll put it to him
We’ve come up trumps this week: we’ve only gone and got Michael Douglas to do the reader interview. Yes, that Michael Douglas, the one you’ll recall interrogating Sharon Stone in that scene in Basic Instinct, or trying to order breakfast in Falling Down; or wearing that white stage suit as Liberace in Behind the Candelabra. He’s won two Oscars: best actor for the lizardly Gordon “Greed is good” Gekko in Wall Street and – amazingly – best picture for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, on which he served as producer (after buying the rights off his dad Kirk).
Douglas has since joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hank Pym, the quantum physicist who invents the Ant-Man shrinking technology. He has so far appeared in four Marvel films, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,...

Pancake Man is an intense action thriller from writer / director Bron Theron that follows the story of a man who gets pushed to the edge and is now hell bent on revenge,
In the center of the violence is a cast that includes Corin Nemec (Stargate Sg-1), Elissa Dowling (Girl on the Third Floor), Jordan C. Michael (The Favor), August Kyss (Murdercise), Scott Ward and Michael Della Pia (Half Dead Fred).
The epic tale of violence proves that with every action there is a reaction. A killing spree that involves a couple of complete strangers sets off a change of events that can only be described as
a cross between “Falling Down”, “Resevior Dogs”, and “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”,
Pancake Man finds himself in a Mexican stand-off with a mob bosses’ son, a gang of petty criminals and an innocent cafe staff where revenge is served all day!

Joel Schumacher was an immensely talented filmmaker whose slick visual style earned him loads of high-profile assignments during the 1980s and '90s. He could deliver the sensuous perfume commercial aesthetic of A-listers like Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, and Adrian Lyne sans the auteurist demand for total creative control. He possessed the crowd-pleasing instincts of Tony Scott. He worked with the biggest movie stars of the day: Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, and Mr. T. He discovered Colin Farrell with 2000's "Tigerland." He both saved and killed the "Batman" franchise.
That Schumacher had any kind of career is something of a miracle. He survived a wild youth that included a near-fatal meth addiction, and by his own admission, thousands of sexual partners as the 1980s AIDS epidemic took hold. This experience gave him valuable insight as he landed major studio assignments packed with volatile young talent. On "St. Elmo's Fire,...

“Emily in Paris” has returned for Season 3, and the story contains just as much if not more chaos. This season of the Paris-set dramedy series raises some stakes in serious ways, set to poppy songs that partner well with the loud fashion choices of Emily (Lily Collins) and others. The episode titles cleverly embody some of the song selections as well.
To refresh, Emily’s bestie au-pair-turned-singer Mindy Chen (Ashley Park) has joined a band to busk on the streets and sing for a living. Season 3 offers her a new opportunity to perform at Le Trompette Bleu, a famous nightclub that raised star singers. Her platform enables some great pop radio hit selections for the show.

Photo: 'Savage Salvation’ Payback ‘Savage Salvation’ is a new action thriller about payback. We all love a good payback film from time to time. When the hero is wronged and goes on the very dark path of revenge it can be very satisfying. I remember watching ‘Falling Down’ with Michael Douglas and he seemed to be taking his revenge on the world itself. There are several reasons why revenge films can be so rewarding. They often feature characters who have been wronged in some way and are seeking justice. This can be incredibly satisfying to watch, especially if the film is well-done and the characters are sympathetic. "Falling Down" is the story of a man who gets pushed over the edge. That man, played by Michael Douglas, feels alienated and impotent in his place in society, and after suffering a mental breakdown, he goes on a violent (and often racist) rampage through Los Angeles.
The movie's themes feel perhaps even more prescient today than they did when it was released, with Douglas' character serving as a sort of avatar for the "white male rage" of the Internet era, when people are more isolated than ever. People long for a world of the past, a world that makes sense to them, and when they look around and don't see that, they lash out.
Watching the film today, some people may feel that the film doesn't do quite enough to condemn the actions and worldview of Douglas' character, especially in situations like his racist tirade against a Korean convenience store owner.

Where’s Robert De Niro when you need him?
De Niro, who has a way of elevating weird character roles into commanding lead parts, made a cottage industry of portraying the sort of person who now stands accused of attacking Paul Pelosi, in what is alleged to have been a scheme to take hostage his wife Nancy, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. (DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges.)
Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976), Pupkin in The King of Comedy (1982) and Renard in The Fan (1996) were eerily recognizable as examples of a perhaps uniquely American type. Marginalized. Damaged. Increasingly isolated. They spiral into very personal obsession, as the noisy pop and political culture overwhelms their fragile grip on the real.

Avril Lavigne is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her debut album, Let Go, with a new deluxe edition — out today — featuring six bonus tracks.
One of the additions to the album is Lavigne’s newly recorded version of “Breakaway,” a song she originally wrote for Let Go, but ultimately ditched (she gave the song to Kelly Clarkson, whose version became a hit in 2004). For the new version of “Breakaway,” Lavigne restored some of the original lyrics, which reference her childhood in Canada. (A lyric video for “Breakaway’ is available on Facebook.

A Herman Yau feature starring Anthony Wong comes complete with its own level of expectation. You know that Anthony Wong is going to go crazy eyes at some point, it’s just a case of when and how far is he going to go. A title such as “Taxi Hunter” is a clue that this is going to fit into that expectation. Yet, whilst the pair don’t disappoint, the film does offer a bit more than the norm.
Insurance salesman Kin (Anthony Wong) lives a peaceful live with his pregnant wife until one evening she is killed by a negligent taxi driver. Nobody is formulaic, derivative, silly, and quite fun. It could be said to sit in a genre that we'll call "John Wicks" where an eponymous (albeit here anonymous) protagonist becomes a whirling dervish of destruction to avenge some wrong and, potentially, reignite or redirect an actor's career.
Yet that's to undermine something that's simply seeking to amuse. It's got action sequences aplenty, invention in them too, but it's not trying to hold a candle to Wick or dye historic like Atomic Blonde. It actually feels more in the vein of Red or even Falling Down, though with a key element being the distance in a marriage it has echoes of Another Round. This is a middle-aged revenge fantasy, but the revenge is less against unlucky assailants or convenient Russian mobsters than middle-age itself.
