Yep… It’s Term 2 bitches, and it’s more chaotic than ever.
For the upcoming season, there will be some new faces joining the fray, along with many returning characters.

Netflix is gearing up for a busy end to 2022.

The first of the streaming service’s high-profile films, set to arrive in the tail-end of the year, will be Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas.
Elsewhere, there is a bunch of non-Netflix films set to be added over the course of the month, as well as the return of everyone’s favourite Karate Kid spin-off TV series.

Paramount-owned British network Channel 5, Australia’s Network 10 and Fremantle are looking to a post-Neighbours future and working on a primetime thriller from Neighbours exec Jason Herbison, starring Stay Close actor Jo Joyner.
Filming will get underway shortly in Australia on four-parter Riptide, which will follow Alison (Joyner), whose life is plunged into despair when her new Australian husband vanishes after a morning surf. It quickly becomes obvious there is more to the story than meets the eye as she sets out to investigate his disappearance.
Joyner will play the lead and Herbison created the show. He was an exec on Channel 5/Network 10 miniseries Lie With Me and Neighbours, the soap produced by Fremantle for Channel 5 and Network 10’s (and streamer 10 Peach) that is about to end after three-and-a-half decades, as the UK network pushes further into original drama such as Riptide.
Joining Joyner is Ciarán Griffiths and Australian actors David Berry, Peter O’Brien, Ally Fowler (Wentworth), Pia Miranda, rising stars Benny Turland, Asher Yasbincek and Yazeed Dahar, and newcomers Benjamin Samaddar and Sonya Suares.
“Lie With Me proved incredibly popular with our viewers and I’m looking forward to expanding our drama slate even further, working hand in hand with our production partners Fremantle Australia and Network 10,” said Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment, Unscripted, Channel 5 & Paramount+.

“Barons,” a surf and business drama series that plays this week at Series Mania, is a calling card for the newly re-structured Australian operations of TV giant Fremantle.
In recent weeks, leadership of the unscripted side of the business has been put in the hands of Eureka, a company in which it bought an increased shareholding last year. That leaves the remainder, under the management of Greg Woods, focused on high end drama and documentaries.
Insiders have called the new emphasis on premium drama and big factual pieces a new chapter for the company.
Other upcoming shows include the recently wrapped “Heartbreak High” for Netflix, “Significant Others” for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and “Jump” for local streamer Stan.
“These guys with very humble origins, in this tin pot town in Australia, become like Cain and Abel. They’re kind of friends and rivals. That works as a kind of ceiling.

Leading production conglomerate Fremantle announced a new structure in Australia that will bring the development and production of all its entertainment, reality, and game show formats under the control of unscripted producer, Eureka Productions. Eureka is led by co-CEOs Chris Culvenor and Paul Franklin.
Fremantle Australia’s interim CEO, Greg Woods will take on the firm’s CEO role permanently and lead the other side of Fremantle’s Australian business. This will focus on the development and production of drama, documentaries, and factual-skewing programs.
The new structure follows Fremantle’s increased shareholding in Eureka last year and will see the label take on production of all Fremantle’s entertainment catalogue, including “Australia’s Got Talent,” “Australian Idol” and “Farmer Wants a Wife.”
It also follows the exit of Fremantle Asia Pacific CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor that was announced in December. Oliver-Taylor is set to join Netflix Anz as its head of physical production.

Two “massive moveables” – that is, Covid-19 and the delay in legislative changes to the offsets – mean Screen Australia has been scenario planning.
CEO Graeme Mason sat down with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner for a broad-ranging chat on Facebook Live this week, where the topic of the reform package loomed large.
As it stands, the Treasury Laws Amendment (2021 Measures No. 5) Bill 2021 – which would, inter alia, lift the Producer Offset for non-feature length content from 20 to 30 per cent – has yet to pass the Senate.
This is of concern to both Spa and Screen Australia. As the legislation is supposed to apply retroactively to July 1, many TV projects have already gone into production on the assumption of a 30 per cent offset.
If the Bill does not pass the Senate before the end of the sitting year – which ends next week – it will be knocked back to 2022. If an election is then called,...

The premiere of Amazon’s Back to the Rafters last month and the impending production of Netflix’s Heartbreak High offer insight into how international platforms approach local IP with cultural resonance.
Whereas one picks up the story of a family six years after their last outing, the other will reimagine a world from before the turn of the century, sharing only its title and young adult genre with the original.
The local and international popularity of both series – Heartbreak High was sold to more than 80 countries in the ’90s and Packed to the Rafters to a number of European and Asian territories, as well as South Africa – makes them appealing for platforms like Netflix and Amazon with global audiences. However, the process of bringing back an old favourite is not always a smooth one.

Nakul Legha may have only been a member of the Netflix Anz content team for just under 12 months, but his enthusiasm for Australian storytelling goes well beyond that.
Having moved to Australia from Bhutan with his family at the age of nine, the streamer’s licensing and co-productions lead credited Aussie television with helping him settle into his new home.
“I didn’t speak any English and we didn’t have any family here, so it was really through TV that I got to understand my place in the community and understand Australia,” he said.

Blue Post managing director Peter Millington welcomed the prospect of new talent in post-production.
“Post-production can be very difficult to break into, so creating an attachment program is a perfect way to open doors to anyone who has a passion for this sometimes forgotten area of the screen craft industry,” he said.
“Australia has some amazing practitioners in screen editing, colour grading, picture finishing, sound mixing, and visual effects but there is no doubt that with the current boom in production, we need some fresh faces to build the next generation of post professionals.

Netflix director of local originals Que Minh Luu says the streamer hopes to “flex and experiment” with its storytelling from Australia in the year ahead.
It comes after Netflix announced, invested in, or brought to screen more than 15 new Australian titles last year, including originals such as the Heartbreak High reboot, Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, Izzy Bee’s Koala World, Clickbait, The New Legends of Monkey S2, True Spirit, and Urzila Carlson: Overqualified Loser.
Luu, who joined Netflix last July after three and a half years as an executive producer at the ABC, tells If the year ahead is “ripe with creative ambition”.
“What we’re trying to do in Australia is broaden the scope of the kinds stories we currently have, enable our world-class talent and creatives to lean even further into making quality shows that feel culturally ours, and empower younger generations to break through,” she says.

Netflix is reimagining the popular 1990s Australian teen drama Heartbreak High for a modern audience as part of a deal with Fremantle Australia.
The streaming giant has greenlit a reboot of the series, which will premiere in 2022. All 210 episodes of the original series of Heartbreak High are also now streaming on Netflix.
Fremantle will co-produce the new series with Dutch production company NewBe, which acquired the rights from Brian Abel, partner of the late Ben Gannon, who created and produced the original.
Que Minh Luu, Netflix’s director of originals in Australia, said the “rebellious” Australian YA drama was “overdue” a return to the screen.

Twenty-seven of Australia’s top cinematographers last night launched a social media campaign aimed at boosting the number of women employed in camera teams and, more broadly, encouraging greater diversity across the screen industry.
Using the hashtag #whoisinyourcrew, the six-week campaign is designed to reach all heads of department as well as directors and producers.
The initiative was conceived by Dop Bonnie Elliott on behalf of the Australian Cinematographers Society’s Diversity Committee, the reconfigured Acs Women’s Advisory Panel.
Appointed to Screen Australia’s Gender Matters task force this year, Elliott has led the way by maintaining gender equity across her own camera teams for the last four years.
“I am keen to empower my fellow cinematographers to help make change in the industry through their hiring practices,” says Elliott, whose recent credits include Stateless, The Furnace, Palm Beach, The Hunting, H is for Happiness and Daina Reid’s upcoming Run Rabbit Run.

Doris Younane in ‘Five Bedrooms’
After years of fighting against being typecast as Lebanese or other Middle Eastern characters, actor Doris Younane is in a very happy place in her career.
She’s played a variety of characters, most of no specific ethnicity, in the past five years with recurring roles in Five Bedrooms, The Wrong Girl and Party Tricks plus guest appearances in Secret City, Harrow and Janet King.
“I just want to be seen as an actor in Australia,” she tells If. “I no longer want to be a pin-up for multiculturalism; I have passed that baton on to others. I’ve been really lucky. I think I am a good, solid actor and that’s what has got me through.”
Currently Younane is winning plaudits for her performance as the firebrand Heather in Five Bedrooms, Hoodlum Entertainment’s eight-part comedy-drama for Network 10 created by Christine Bartlett and Michael Lucas.

One of Australia.s most experienced screenwriters has criticised sexism in casting which she says discriminates against women who aren.t deemed attractive and those from ethnic backgrounds.
Kristen Dunphy says this bias in casting often works against the stereotypes which writers are striving to avoid.
A screenwriter for 20 years, her extensive credits include Essential Media and Entertainment.s upcoming Sbs drama The Principal, Blackfella Films and Werner Film Productions. ABC3 indigenous teen drama Ready for This, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, The Straits, East West 101, Wildside, Heartbreak High and G.P.

.It seems there is no such thing as a vital female who is not also young, thin and beautiful.

Jessica Marais in Love Child..
.
Sarah Lambert wasn.t around in the 1960s but Love Child, the drama series she created for the Nine Network, sets to capture that era of revolution, bohemia, youthful innocence and exuberance.
The eight-part series set in Kings Cross in 1969 evidently delivers on that promise, encouraging the network to commission a second season as announced by director of television Michael Healy at the launch of Nine's 2014 season this week..
As the writer-producer, Lambert was inspired to make the show when she learned that a close family friend of her mother was one of thousands of women who had been forced to live in an unwed mothers' home and give up her baby daughter for adoption 20 years earlier.
Produced by Playmaker Media, the series follows characters who live and work in a maternity hospital and home for unwed mothers, contrasted with those who inhabit the streets...

It is almost time to see not only Ranbir Kapoor, but both his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh together on the big screen. Not only this, but Besharam is Pallavi Sharda’s debut in Bollywood as lead actress. You may recognise Pallavi from My Name is Khan, in which she played Sajida or from Heroine, where she played Gayatri. Not only has Pallavi acted in film but she has also done theatre. She was the lead actress for ‘Taj Express’, a theatrical musical.
BollySpice caught up with Ranbir Kapoor and Pallavi Sharda to talk their upcoming film Besharam, (mis)behaving in front of parents and much more!

Simon Denny Baker was born in Launceston, Tasmania on July 30, 1969. He is 5' 10". His parents, Barry and Elizabeth Baker moved to New Guinea in 1972. Shortly after, his parents divorced. His mother later re-married a butcher named Tom Denny and they lived in Sydney with his sister, Terri. Simon attended Ballina High School. After a time, his mother moved to New South Wales where Simon grew up. He did not know that Denny was not his real father's name. Being raised near the ocean developed his love for the sea and all things water-based, such as surfing and water polo. He recalled, "I didn't grow up with money, but I grew up with a lot of space...I was committed to the ocean." After graduating high school he returned to Sydney and intended to become a nurse, but didn't finish his degree. (Nurse Baker has a nice ring to it.) Thereafter he worked in menial jobs,...

Margaret Pomeranz delivered a powerful keynote speech at the opening of the Spaa Conference yesterday in Sydney, and Encore has the full transcript of her meditation on the state of Australian film and television – and why Government and audiences should appreciate the arts a little more.
I’m extremely grateful to Spaa for inviting me to give this keynote speech today. It is the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture and I want to honour the man today. Hector put Australian television on the map, he made Australian accents acceptable in the media. Do you remember when we could only stomach New Zealanders reading our news because they sounded more English than us? Brian Henderson was a prime example. But more than that Hector validated Australian writers, Australian actors, directors, designers, a whole Australian infrastructure, Some of those people are still working today. In a very significant way Hector created an industry,...

Dark, contemporary thriller The Dinner Party, starring Lara Cox of Australian TV shows Heartbreak High and Home and Away, is released on DVD in the UK this week.
Inspired by true events, the Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment release was nominated for Best Debut Feature at the 17th Raindance Film Festival 2009.

Soon they realise that not all of them will be leaving the table as Angela does not plan to die alone. The question is: Who is she going to take with her?
Running time is 88minutes on the Certificate 15 release.
