Tony Sokol Feb 15, 2020

Prog will rock the future in a film adaptation of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Karn Evil 9" from the producers of Jumanji.

Developed with the full cooperation of Elp and its management, Karn Evil 9 will be executive produced by Radar Pictures, who made the Jumanji film series.

“The visionary world that Elp created with their recording 'Karn Evil 9' is much closer to reality today,” Radar's Ted Field said in a statement. “Our team at Radar looks forward to bringing this vision of where things may be headed to the big screen and beyond.”

‘Jumanji’ Producer To Develop Emerson, Lake & Palmer Song ‘Karn Evil 9’ As A Sci-Fi Movie

  • Deadline
Exclusive: Radar Pictures, which served as an executive producer on Sony’s Jumanji films, has secured rights to “Karn Evil 9,” the futuristic 1973 song by London prog-rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, to develop as a sci-fi feature. New York Times bestselling author Daniel H. Wilson has been hired to adapt the screenplay, which is inspired by the title and lyrics created and recorded by band members Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer.

Centered on a society that has drained all its blood with a dependence on technology, the film will explore the world controlled by a pervasive and dictatorial technocracy. The annual “Karn Evil” — a macabre rite of passage — is a young person’s once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience unbridled freedom, before subjugating themselves to the ruling class. When people stop returning from their Karn Evil experience, fear drives a revolution to topple the status quo and the artificial intelligence discovered at its heart.

Vine Buys Lakeshore Entertainment Library & Int’l Sales Ops, Bringing Under Same Roof As Village Roadshow

  • Deadline
Exclusive: After being on the sales block since March, 25-year-old independent studio Lakeshore Entertainment has sold its 300-title film and TV library and international sales operations to Vine Alternative Investments, the same company that owns Village Roadshow Entertainment Group. While no comments were made by either party, industry sources inform us the value of the library was in the $200M neighborhood.

I understand that the Lakeshore principals — co-ceo/founder Tom Rosenberg, co-ceo Eric Reid, CFO Marc Reid and President Gary Lucchesi — will be announcing their next iteration of business in the coming weeks.

Vine plans to make Lakeshore a feeder for Village Roadshow, a catalog that fits squarely into the parent’s corporate strategy. The Lakeshore portfolio includes such movies as Oscar-winning hit Million Dollar Bab;, the half-billion-plus-grossing Underworld franchise; and such prolific movies as Runaway Bride, Lincoln Lawyer and The Ugly Truth. That library also includes Roger Corman’s New World Pictures catalog,

Word-of-Mouth Turned M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Sixth Sense’ Into a Sleeper Hit 20 Years Ago

Word-of-Mouth Turned M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Sixth Sense’ Into a Sleeper Hit 20 Years Ago
It’s the 20th anniversary of “The Sixth Sense,” a success that took everybody by surprise, including the filmmakers. Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan had made only two films, “Praying With Anger” and “Wide Awake,” which barely made a ripple in theaters. However, Variety reported Aug. 9, 1999, “In a surprise ending to rival the film’s twisty plot, Buena Vista’s supernatural thriller ‘The Sixth Sense’ stunned prognosticators by snatching the weekend box office title from odds-on favorite ‘The Blair Witch Project.’ The Bruce Willis starrer opened to an August record $25.8 million, according to studio estimates.” A month later, Variety declared it the “Sleeper of the Summer,” and said amid all the films with big marketing budgets and the studios’ newfound fascination with internet promotion, “Sixth Sense” had an old-fashioned reason for success: “This film has spectacular word of mouth,” Marc Pascucci, senior VP of marketing for Loews Cineplex U.S., told Variety.

Rita Wilson on Her Walk of Fame Honor and New Album

  • Variety
Rita Wilson on Her Walk of Fame Honor and New Album
Rita Wilson is everyone’s best friend, one of those performers who appears as beloved in real life as on the screen. As Meg Ryan’s character says in “Sleepless in Seattle” after mistaking Wilson’s character for a romantic rival, “She looked like somebody we would’ve been friends with.” Of course, acting is only one facet of her personality; she’s also a heralded singer and award-winning producer. But to so many people, she’s instantly identifiable as a welcome presence on screens.

“I’ve played the wonderful, warm, kind, understanding sisters, aunts, mothers, daughters, friends, and I have loved it,” Wilson says of her roles in hits including “Now and Then” and “It’s Complicated”; she is on screens now in “Gloria Bell” as Julianne Moore’s bestie. But she has also enjoyed going against type in recent roles. “Playing a narcissistic mother on ‘Girls’ was so liberating.

Mr. Segal, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me sir. It’s an honor.

Oh absolutely, thank you.

To start with, when reading your biography I noticed that you double majored in broadcast journalism and English, which is interesting because I’ve noticed other film directors like Orson Welles and Christopher Nolan didn’t pursue film as their university major either. I’m wondering, how different do
