Despite a drop of over 50% between weekend box office grosses, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1, the latest entry in the young adult dystopia film series, once again took the top spot at the domestic weekend box office, repeating its opening weekend feat. While making only $56.8 million over the three days, the film benefitted from an overall dip in box office revenue, which is down about 20% from the same weekend in 2013. With two weekends in theatres under its belt, forecasters are also beginning to get a clearer picture of how well the movie might do by the end of the year, and while it is going to leave a mark, the film seems unlikely to dethrone this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the top grossing domestic film. With the latter film sitting at $331 million, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 has a ways to go to catch up,...

Though his TV work outshone his big screen roles, James Garner was a legend no matter the size of the screen. So it’s sad to report that he has died at the age of 86.Boasting an easy charm, rugged good looks and a flexible ability to inhabit comedy and drama, Garner delivered masculinity while merrily able to undercut it to supreme effect. Born James Scott Baumgarner in Oklahoma in 1928, he lost his mother when he was just four. Dropping out of high school at 16, Garner joined the merchant marine navy, only to suffer from chronic sea sickness, forcing him to quit and move to Los Angeles to live with his father. He briefly went back to school at Hollywood High and scored a swimsuit-modelling job. But further work in front of a camera would have to wait, as he spent a period drifting through odd jobs, and was then...

Following a session that saw the lowest grosses of any weekend in 2013 so far, box office has bounced back, thanks to the arrival at last of some commercially strong new product. Both Turbo and Captain Phillips delivered numbers north of £3m. The last time a film – any film, let alone two at once – managed a £3m-plus session was back in late August with the arrival of One Direction: This Is Us.
In the official chart, DreamWorks Animation's Turbo grabs the top spot with £3.89m, boosted by £1.77m in previews. That number compares unfavourably with the previous effort from the company, The Croods, which kicked off with £5.37m including £1.85m in previews back in March. Turbo's result...

New York, March 15 (Reuters) - Oprah Winfrey was crowned America's most influential celebrity for a second straight year on Friday, despite having dropped off daily television in 2011.
Forbes magazine ranked Winfrey, 59, ahead of Hollywood titans Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood and towering over other TV figures such as journalist Barbara Walters and financial guru Suze Orman.
Forbes said that 48 percent of people surveyed rated Winfrey as influential, down just one point from last year. The list was drawn from polls of Americans conducted by E-Poll Market Research, which ranks more than 7,500 celebrities based on 46 different personality attributes.
Winfrey ended her daily "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in May 2011 after 25 years to launch the Oprah Winfrey Network (Own), which features lifestyle programming aimed at women.
After struggling in the ratings since its launch, Own has seen audiences rise recently, thanks to Winfrey's January world exclusive with cyclist Lance Armstrong admitting to years of doping,...

If executed correctly, biopics can be an absolutely wonderful thing. There are (and have been) a ridiculous amount of truly interesting people in this world, and without biographical films, a lot of us would never know the details of their existence.
A solid portion of those aforementioned interesting people happen to be movie directors, but for whatever reason, films about filmmakers haven’t had too much success in the past. Take last year, for example. Two separate Alfred Hitchcock films were released: HBO’s The Girl and Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock. The former was panned by critics, but managed to get a Golden Globe nomination, while the latter received mixed reviews, and was ultimately considered a huge disappointment.
That being said, I think we’re all due for a truly great biopic revolving around a deserving director: he’s 10 we think would make for some seriously great cinema.
10. Quentin Tarantino

Riva was 63, and the circumstances and cause of death were not known but Deadline was able to confirm his passing. Very highly regarded in the industry, he was the son of actress-author Maria Riva and art director William Riva and the grandson of Marlene Dietrich and film editor Rudolph Sieber. Raised in New York City, he eventually found his way to Los Angeles. Dropping out of UCLA to pursue a career in production design, Riva apprenticed with Jackson DeGoiva and his first major movie was uncredited work with Toby Rafelson on I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977). We’re well into the second month of 2012 and the country is still infatuated with super heroes. When small films like Chronicle can sit atop the box office with a tally of $22 million, then you know how much super hero films have a hold on theaters around the country. Just wait until The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises come out. Chronicle beat out Daniel Radcliffe and The Woman in Black by the slim margin of $1 million. Meanwhile, Kristen Bell (Unsupervised, House of Lies) and her viral breakdowns about her encounters with sloths could not help the third new release this week, Big Miracle, the feel good story of the week that recounted the true story about whales trapped in ice which finished fourth with a disappointing $8.5 million. Still holding strong at #3 was Liam Neeson and The Grey.

The American Idol Season 11 Premiere continued last night in Pittsburgh, Pa where the talent delivered almost as much Savannah did. We touched familiar ground as more of the wackier contestants made their way to the stage coming from all across the nation and there were enough sob stories to keep the tears coming for days. All in all, this was a very entertaining and moving hour long broadcast that has shed the spotlight on a few individuals worth rooting for throughout the season.
22 year old Heejun Han may have come of as an incredibly nervous oddball who doesn’t know how to have a conversation, but he does know how to sing well. In fact, he sings better than that, making the Pittsburgh auditions a stop worth taking just for him. That is how talented this kid is and it would be a shame if he did not make it through Hollywood week.

2012 is shaping out to be a banner year for Hollywood blockbusters. Between the amount of buzz that The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises alone are generating over the past year alone makes one feel that these heavyweights are exhausting their stay. It’s hard to believe that in a year filled with high budgets and wide adaptations, that there is room for anything else. Yet this year is also a frontrunner for many beloved cult filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, the Coen Brothers and Steven Soderbergh. In a way, one can imagine that this year is turning out to be a David and Goliath type of battle. Who will reign supreme? Will the victors be the fanboys or the mass audience? Shall the conquerors be those who bleed cinema or those who bleed green? You decide by checking out the list below. In no particular order, here are ten...

Don Cheadle‘s been wanting to play tortured jazz genius Miles Davis for a while now. In the meantime, a rival Miles Davis project, titled Miles with Notorious and Faster helmer George Tillman Jr. signed on to direct, has been announced and is in pre-production stages. Even still, Cheadle’s confident in his adaptation, one he hopes to star in, direct and produce.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Cheadle offered his (begrudged) blessing to the Tillman project, then had a lot to say about his passion piece [via The Playlist]:
“…It’s not a biopic, per se. It’s a gangster pic. It’s a movie that Miles Davis would have wanted to star in. Without throwing history away, we’re trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist. The bulk of it takes place in ’79, in a period where he actually wasn’t playing. But we traverse a lot of it his life,...

2011 was a hectic year for comics. We lost the creators of two of the most recognizable comic book characters ever. The comic books not many people knew about continued to be the best. DC hit the reboot button on a scale not seen since Crisis on Infinite Earths. Marvel……didn’t seem to do anything different, giving us yet another reboot of the X-Men franchise (they seem to happen every two years now), and killing Thor and Bucky. Again. Though they did let Jonathan Hickman’s imagination run wild in Secret Warriors, S.H.I.E.L.D., Ff, and Ulimates. Thats a good thing.
With the year nearly behind us, it’s time to cast our eye over the releases of 2012 (well, the first quarter anyway), and see what’s in store to come…

Dropping out of the rat race isn't the newest concept in the world (think Tom and Barbara Good in The Good Life), but it's being given another spin in David Wain's new comedy, Wanderlust. You can take a look at the first trailer below.
Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston star as George and Linda, a couple of high-flying New Yorkers who suddenly find themselves having to downshift when he's fired. They try moving to Atlanta, where George's obnoxious brother (Ken Marino) has offered him a job. But when that doesn't work out, they go driving around the country, eventually ending up in error at the Elysium commune. And that's when the trouble really starts.
It's a regular trailer, so we're honestly more interested to see what Wain and co can shove into any likely Red Band release, but there are a few chuckles here. And he has definitely recruited a good comedy cast,...

Lady GaGa has dethroned Oprah Winfrey as the world's most powerful celebrity. On Wednesday, May 18, Forbes magazine released its annual Celebrity 100 list for 2011 and unraveled that the "Born This Way" hitmaker moved up four positions from last year to claim the title from the daytime talk show queen.
Forbes breaks down the list into five categories. While GaGa was way behind four-time list leader Oprah in the money category, she topped the social and web categories. The 25-year-old singer was estimated to have earned $90 million in the past 12 months, and have gathered as much as 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers.
The magazine's editor Dorothy Pomerantz explained, "Lady GaGa beat Oprah this year because of her social media power." She added, "She can use Twitter and Facebook to work the 'little monsters' into a frenzy that leads to record sales and media attention. She's the best example of how...

Easter Weekend proved once again that it you animate it, the will come. Fox’s Rio held the top spot for a second straight weekend in a row grossing $26.8 million for the weekend and $81.3 million for its first 10 days at the box office. Over half of its weekend gross (57%) came from 3D. Even with its win Rio dropped 31.7% which made it a sitting duck for a worthy challenger.
The ladies also came out to the movies in full force this weekend as Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family and the non-Twilight Robert Pattinson circus romance Water For Elephants (review) finished second ($25.8M) and third ($17.5M) respectively. Women accounted for at least 70% in both films. This was Perry’s third Easter opening Meet the Browns and Why Did I get Married Too?.

Austin Peay State University is testing out a Netflix-like recommendation system for courses. Tristan Denley, the prof behind the tech, wonders: "If eHarmony works well, why not this?"
As per credit costs for college courses spike, the impact of poor advice from a college counselor can mean a disturbing amount of misplaced time and money. So Austin Peay State University mathematics professor Tristan Denley designed a course-recommendation system for students to suppliment their regular college counselor visits. This system, effectively, would take human errors (and mood swings and bad judgment) out of the equation. Among the results, according to Denley, have been an increase in Gpa and fewer dropouts. Computers are not a panacea yet: They can't recommend a career options or whisper secrets about bad professors. But, for what may ultimately be one of the most important decisions of your life, course selection, computers can have a leg up on the human competition.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid takes down Sucker Punch at the Us box office, as Zack Snyder's latest fails to strike gold...
Once again, color me surprised by the strength of the Wimpy Kid franchise. Despite the fact I'd never heard of them/it/whatever, the first Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movie picked up an impressive $64 million in the Us, versus a budget of only $15 million. That's pretty impressive, but equally impressive is this weekend's box office champion.
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, dominated a weak weekend box office, bringing in $24.4 million in its opening weekend. The budget for Diary Rodrick is only $21 million, making Diary Rodrick an instant hit.
Meanwhile, Zack Snyder still continues to search for a big hit. His last huge success, 300, was in 2007, and since then he's had a couple of moderate successes in Watchmen and Legend Of The Guardians, but not much else,...

Viggo Mortensen will not be the male lead in Snow White and the Huntsman. Dropping out leaves the door open for Mortensen to be the villain in Superman: Man of Steel which is scheduled to shoot at the same time as Huntsman. Mortensen ended months of negotiations with Universal for the lead in the Joe Roth produced film which is being directed by Rupert Sanders and has confirmed stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron on board. Filming on Snow White and the Huntsman was scheduled to start sometime this fall for a December 21, 2012 release. Warner Bros. would not comment, however Superman: Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is reportedly interested in Mortensen for the Henry Cavill starrer. Snyder's Sucker Punch opens in theatres today and is plagued by bad reviews from Critics, holding a terrible 20% rotten rating on RottenTomatoes.com. It looks like there's been a new development in the search for an actor to portray the villain in Superman: The Man of Steel. Variety reports that Viggo Mortensen will now Not be starring in Snow White and the Huntsman, formally ending months of negotiations. Here is an excerpt from their report which makes things a little clearer: Dropping out of negotiations leaves the door open for Mortensen to take the role of the villain in Warner Bros.' ''Superman: Man of Steel,'' which is scheduled to shoot at the same time as ''Huntsman.'' Warner Bros. would not comment, but ''Superman'' director Zack Snyder is reportedly interested in Mortensen. Aaron Levie knew before most forecasters: It's cloudy in Silicon Valley. As the co-founder of Box.net, a platform he built in college to share and access digital files in the cloud, the 25-year-old CEO has taken on corporate behemoths such as Amazon and Microsoft.
And business is booming. Since the start of 2010, the company's workforce has bloomed 85% to 120 employees; revenues are projected to triple from last year; and the service now boasts more than 4.5 million users and 60,000 client companies, including Dell, T-Mobile, Panasonic, and MTV. Currently, Box.net serves around 500,000,000 files annually--or about 600 terabytes of data.
We caught up with Levie, who discussed his inspiration from Steve Jobs, support from Mark Cuban, and why he dropped out of college.
What is your big idea?

Lots of new releases battle it out at the box office, but it's Tangled and Harry Potter that prevail...
In its second week of wide release, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 easily surpassed $220 million in Us grosses. It has taken in just under $610 million internationally. It also fought off Disney's highest-grossing non-Pixar release ever to retain the box office crown over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Harry Potter's latest adventure grossed a staggering $50.3 million in its second weekend, holding off the game challenge of Tangled, which took second with $49.1 million. That's an incredible showing, made possible due to the incredible power of a four-day weekend off from school.
It's no wonder that the family fare dominated the weekend. The other new releases, Burlesque (fourth place, $11.8 million), Love And Other Drugs (sixth place, $9.85 million) and Faster (seventh place, $8.7 million), couldn't hold a candle to the power of the Harry Potter franchise,...

Could someone other than Emma Watson have played Hermione Granger? The mere thought likely gives devoted "Potter"-philes heart palpitations, but it became a distinct possibility when the actress' contract came up for renewal in 2006 during production on "The Order of the Phoenix."
Watson was firmly committed to continuing her education — not at Hogwarts but in the real world — and the schedule for the forthcoming "Potter" flicks simply wouldn't allow her to pursue her studies. Dropping out of the franchise became a distinct possibility, as devastating to the fan community as that would have been.

Paramount wins its gamble to make a quick sequel to Paranormal Activity. And Clint Eastwood's Hereafter makes a solid start, too...
Last year's underground phenomenon, Paranormal Activity, had a wonderfully slow, gradual build up at the box office. The movie pulled in $108 million, despite never hitting more than 2700 screens at any one time. It was a brilliant example of how movies used to work in the old days, in which you had a few prints traveling from town to town, and you depended on press clippings from the previous town to generate interest in the next town.
Paranormal Activity rode sold out screenings in individual towns to a huge national buzz. To show how much things have changed since last October, Paranormal Activity 2 got released in 3216 screens at once, all across the nation. The results are the same, though. Paranormal Activity 2 topped the box office with a $41.5 million weekend in the States,...

George Clooney fights off Machete to take the box office crown. Here's our weekend round-up...
As we head into the last major holiday of the summer season in the United States (a uniquely American holiday called Labor Day in which unions in the early 20th century exercised their powers in such a way as to get their employees a free paid day off from work for one last hurrah of grilling and fishing and general summer frivolity, or, in my case, a stomach flu that made me wish I was dead for two whole days), there's only one movie that should top the box office, and it's George Clooney's semi-silent spy thriller, The American. Despite a Wednesday opening, the movie has picked up the top spot in a weak end of summer box office, with a take of 12.97 million bucks ($16 million overall).

Twilight Eclipse dominates the weekend box office, although The Last Airbender overcomes terrible reviews to earn a bit of cash, too...
Well, in an unsurprising yet still traumatic development for Western civilization, the Twilight Saga continues to shatter box office records and set the hearts of teenage girls all aflutter. The latest footnote in the decline of the Roman Empire, Eclipse, picked up an impressive $69 million, despite losing most of its initial audience on a weekday opening. So far, the flick has picked up $161 million in five days.
It's a huge success, of course. That goes without saying. However, it's worth noting that New Moon grossed $164 million in five days, which is small consolation, but consolation nonetheless. Small improvements are still improvements.
Landing in second place is M. Night Shyamalan's take on the very popular Japanese animated series. The Last Airbender, which had to change its title from Avatar: The Last Airbender...

The annual Harris Poll for Favorite Movie Star has been released and Clint Eastwood is back on top.
After a dip to No. 2 last year (and an exclusion the year before), Clint Eastwood is the Favorite Movie Star of 2009. Men dominate the poll, as the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 spots go to Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks. Sandra Bullock is the only female to crack the Top 5 at No. 4. Bullock has only been in the Top 10 four times in last 16 years and never higher than ninth so obviously "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side" are good for more than just awards.
Coming at No. 6 and No. 7 are cowboys George Clooney and John Wayne. Wayne is actually the only deceased person to make either this list or the Favorite TV Personality list and he's been dead for 30 years, so kudos to Marion Morrison.
Rounding out the Top 10 are Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman...

The annual Harris Poll for Favorite TV Personality has been released -- Oprah Winfrey wins for the eighth time.
It's no surprise that ruler of the known universe talk-show host Oprah Winfrey is No. 1 on the Harris Poll. In 17 years, she's been No. 1 eight times and the other nine times she finished either 2nd, 3rd or 4th.
In a bit of a surprise, Glenn Beck makes his poll debut at the No. 2 spot. Jay Leno takes a hit by dropping from No. 1 last year to No. 3 this year. Rounding out the Top 5 are Ellen DeGeneres and Hugh Laurie in a tie for fourth. We sort-of assumed TV personality meant a real person -- we're pretty sure Dr. Gregory House actually placed fourth.
Coming in at No. 5 is Jon Stewart and No. 6 is Charlie Sheen. We're assuming that either A) these surveys were conducted pre-knife-wielding-scandal or B) the voters think Sheen is actually Charlie Harper.

"'The Green Hornet' was something that I wanted to do, I think Michel Gondry is very talented and I had hoped it would work but I think Seth Rogen and Michel had a different take on the character," he explained. "I wasn't interested in just being just a straight-up bad guy who was killing people willy-nilly." Cage continued: "I had to have some humanity and to try to give it something where you could understand why the character was the way he was but I don't think there was enough time to develop it." Jessica Biel regrets dropping out of college to pursue an acting career, and would ditch her Hollywood dreams if she could start over.
Biel, 27, enrolled for courses at Massachusetts' Tufts University but quit school within a year-and-a-half to film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a 2003 remake of the 1974 horror film.
And Biel still scolds herself for turning her back on her school books despite her success as a Hollywood actress - because she missed out on making memories with her peers.
She tells America's Allure magazine, "I wish I would have had that time that my girlfriends all had. I wish I would have lived in that crappy, nasty brownstone that they all lived in. If I had to do it again, I would have stuck around and finished it out."...
