Adam Wingard has signed up to direct Onslaught, an action thriller that is being backed by A24.
It was back in October that we first learned that the arthouse independent studio was broadening its horizons and looking to start backing more mainstream action projects. As far as that tactic foes, we’re starting to see that approach materialise, not least with Onslaught. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio found itself on the right end of a bidding war for Onslaught, a film that is being described as a ‘gonzo action horror thriller.’

Exclusive: After having a busy month at the box-office with Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire and Abigail both opening, Dan Stevens is continuing to stay busy as he is set to join Lily James in the upcoming film inspired by the story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, from 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment.
While it’s not entirely clear who Stevens will be playing, we’re told he’s set for the part of Herd’s business partner. The untitled feature goes into production this year.
Famously launching the online dating platform Bumble after co-founding and departing Tinder, Herd became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31 when Bumble went public in 2021. While she stepped down as CEO last year, the app continues to be hugely popular amongst the single crowd.
Plot details for the film remain vague, as it’s said to be somewhat loosely inspired by Herd’s story.

Forty years after putting down the Power Station broom and picking up the microphone, Jon Bon Jovi is in an introspective mood.
The man who co-wrote iconic songs including “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Keep the Faith” is preparing for the release of Hulu’s four-part docuseries Thank You, Goodnight, directed by Gotham Chopra.
Initially planned as a career retrospective around the band’s 40th anniversary – Bon Jovi’s eponymous album was released on January 21, 1984 – the series added another element to the story, that of its lead singer’s health issues that have raised question marks about the band’s future.
Thank You, Goodnight, which premieres April 26, highlights the highs and lows of being in a band, the drugs and the difficulties of remaining successful and wanting to evolve but not wanting to alienate its audience, in addition to its leader’s health issues. It’s not a “VH1 puff piece,...

Director Gareth Edwards' 2014 "Godzilla" has become a rather important movie in the history of the now 70-year-old franchise. Not only was it the first American-produced film to feature the legendary monster since 1998's disastrous attempt by Roland Emmerich, but it also kicked off Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse, which is still going strong today. But even back then, excitement was palpable and the production had to try and keep a tight lid on things. In some cases, those were fruitless efforts.
Many films use code names during production to help throw people off the scent. For "Godzilla," the powers that be decided to refer to the movie as "Nautilus," which is seemingly a reference to the USS Nautilus. During a 2014 on-set interview conducted by Collider with one of the film's stars, Bryan Cranston, the actor was asked whether or not he says the word "Godzilla" in the film. It's then...

End of an era, end of a business model, end of a gravy train, end of the world. There were plenty of mixed emotions this week in response to the closure of Oscar-winning production company Participant, and at the very least the industry has agreed something has come to an end.
When Variety broke the news Tuesday that billionaire Jeff Skoll’s 20-year-old company will shut down — after fetching 21 Oscars and introducing a business model that prioritized social impact a bit more than profits – many in the industry were rattled. Not just that mid-level, standalone financier and producer had left the market, but what that means for the viability of movies and TV shows that ask vital questions about justice and the humanity’s future.

Alex Garland’s dystopian action movie Civil War conquered the domestic box office this weekend with $25.7 million, ahead of expectations and scoring A24’s biggest opening ever.
The $50 million movie about a divided America is a big swing for A24 as it tries to produce bigger movies, marking its most expensive production to date.
There are clearly split feelings about the film. Moviegoers only bestowed it with a B- CinemaScore, while PostTrack exits were mixed. The movie’s audience skewed heavily male, or 73 percent. Imax runs are a boon for the movie and contributed more than 16 percent of the gross.

It’s official: Godzilla business is booming. Godzilla Minus One just won an Oscar, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is ruling the box office right now – and on top of that, there’s plenty more small-screen Godzilla goodness to come from the MonsterVerse in another season of Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters. The Apple TV+ drama, which streamed from the end of 2023, told a timeline-hopping tale of in-universe agency Monarch, which featured several appearances from Big G himself. Evidently, the show was a hit – because not only is there more Monarch on the way, but other connected series are being developed too.
For now, details are scarce – it’s unknown if the second season of Monarch will continue the story of the Randa family across the generations, or if it’ll drum up a new human cast. And while you’d expect more appearances from Godzilla, expect much speculation over the kaiju roster too.

Jaws dropped at Legendary and Warner Bros. when Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to $80 million in North America over Easter weekend despite getting shredded by critics. It wasn’t quite double what tracking services had predicted, but close enough. And by day 10, its global cume had hit an impressive $361.1 million as it stayed atop the chart.
So what next? “This is certainly an exciting result,” says Mary Parent, chairman of worldwide production for Josh Grode’s Legendary. Grode’s company is on an enviable winning streak, between this film and early March blockbuster Dune: Part Two. “We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds,” Parent says. “These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.”
Godzilla x Kong is sure to be a hot topic this week at Cinemacon, the annual gathering of cinema operators and Hollywood studios in Las Vegas.

Sunday Am: Even better than expected results for Legendary/Warner Bros’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with a second weekend of $31.7M (-60%) after a second Saturday of $13.8M, +62% over Friday. The twosome are beating their chests to ten-day $135M total.
In second, Universal’s Monkey Man kept steady toward a $10.1M opening, after a $3.58M Saturday, -15% from Friday/previews. If ya think about it, even though this much grittier than any Bollywood film as we know it, it’s on the high-end of where movies for Indians audiences typically open. As a point of reference, Animal, which was a big bloody Hindi action movie last year opened to $6.5M. Typically the audiences for Bollywood movies come out in the first weekend and then fall apart in weekend 2. It will be interesting to see if Monkey Man has any legs off its B+ CinemaScore.

Well, that didn’t take long, did it? EW reports that, thanks to the success of “Dune: Part Two,” Legendary and Dnis Villeneuve have “Dune 3” in development. That comes as no surprise to moviegoers. Villeneuve’s latest is the first critical darling of 2024, and currently holds the spot atop the year’s highest-grossing films. Of course, when “Dune 3” arrives is another question, and Villeneuve has several other projects in the works, that could be his next project.

The nuclear war genre has long been a staple in Tinseltown, with filmmakers putting their own unique spin on the catastrophic scenario. And, when it comes to nuclear, not discussing last year’s Oppenheimer will not do us any favors. Whether it is the ocean eyes of Cillian Murphy or Ludwig Göransson’s relentless score, the film is clearly one of Christopher Nolan’s greatest works.
And it appears that Denis Villeneuve is following in Nolan’s footsteps, as the former may have found his next project in the same genre. The Dune director and Legendary are in talks to collaborate on an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario.

That being said, we are eager to see if Villeneuve’s approach to this dreaded topic will pose a serious threat to Oscar winner Oppenheimer.

Director Denis Villeneuve is currently developing Dune: Messiah, but it’s also being reported that he’ll adapt the non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario after that.
We heard last month that a sequel to this year’s sci-fi opus Dune: Part Two was greenlit and in the process of being written at Legendary Entertainment. While Dune: Messiah bubbles on the stove, though, it’s being reported that director Denis Villeneuve has another project in the works at Legendary – an adaptation of the book Nuclear War: A Scenario.
A New York Times best seller by Annie Jacobsen, Nuclear War is described by its publisher Penguin as a “edge-of-your-seat thriller” with the author basing her what-if vision of armageddon on interviews with military experts.
Deadline reports that Legendary has bought the rights to the novel, and that Villeneuve is expected to make Nuclear War after he’s finished Dune: Messiah.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve is attached to Legendary Entertainment’s answer to Oppenheimer. According to Deadline, the film production company plans to team with Villeneuve for an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario.
Villeneuve’s level of involvement in the movie is currently unknown, but he is expected to serve as a producer, writer, and/or director with longtime partner Tanya Lapointe. Deadline describes the film as a “chilling cautionary tale about where the world might be headed in an age of political volatility at a time when too many countries have nuclear capabilities.”

Exclusive: In a deal worth $500,000 against $1.5 million, Legendary Entertainment has optioned Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario as a potential reteam with its Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve. Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla v Kong: The New Empire is virtually assured of remaining No. 1 at the box office this weekend with $35 million or more — but that doesn’t mean things will be boring.
There’s a potentially close showdown brewing between Monkey Man — Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut — and The First Omen, a prequel to the classic supernatural horror pic The Omen.
Universal is distributing Monkey Man at the behest of Jordan Peele, who was so impressed with Patel’s film that Peele’s Monkey Paw Productions boarded the project and brought it to Universal, his home studio on the movie side. (Monkey Man was originally set up at Netflix, but the filmmakers were eager to secure a traditional theatrical release). A revenge-thriller set in India, Patel’s critically acclaimed film is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, as well as by the John Wick series.

No dart gun, or First Omen, or Monkey Man will put Legendary/Warner Bros’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to sleep this weekend. The pic, after an unexpected $80 million Easter weekend start, will continue to rumble with a 55%-60% second-weekend drop to between $32M-$36M. Through four days, the Adam Wingard-directed Monsterverse title stands at $87.7M, fueled by 57% of K-12 schools out Monday and another 14% colleges. Expect more cash today as, per Comscore, there are 28% of K-12 school out, and 5% universities.

Making a strong antagonist in monster features is always a tough task, especially when human association isn’t involved. Aside from the risk of writing becoming pretty generic and turning the characters into one-toned, motiveless evils, connecting with the audience remains a challenge. In Legendary’s Monsterverse, aside from the iconic King Ghidorah, no other adversary had managed to make that much of an impact in viewers’ minds, which is why Godzilla X Kong needed a well-written opponent to justify the team-up of the eponymous behemoths.

This weekend sees the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is looking like a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!

Adam Wingard grew up on the Shōwa era of Godzilla movies. That would be the period of time when Toho Studios produced monster movies during the reign of Emperor Hirohito—so all the kaiju flicks released between 1954 and 1975. This included ones where Godzilla was a scary emblem of nuclear radiation, sure, but more often than not, the Big G spent these decades as a glorified superhero who hung out with pals like Mothra or Anguirus on Monster Island.
“Those were the movies that were playing on daytime television when I was a kid,” Wingard says when he sits down with Den of Geek ahead of the film’s opening weekend. “So that’s where my inspiration from Godzilla really originates.” He even recalls a vivid childhood memory of watching Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) where the evil, robotic Zilla impersonates...

Orochimaru was one of the most evil shinobi in the Naruto verse. He was the most talented out of the three Legendary Sannin, and Hiruzen Sarutobi expected great things of him. But instead of walking down the right path, he chose to seek vengeance on the Leaf Village and tried to destroy the village on multiple occasions.
He experimented on several human beings and created a faction from the Sound Village shinobi to carry out his missions. Orochimaru was fond of forbidden jutsu and was always on the lookout to decode those jutsu using experimentation. But later on, he left his evil ways behind. Fans believe him to be the prime reason why Jiraiya was not reanimated during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

In the wake of Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Legendary/Warner Bros’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues to provide momentum to the box office following a lack of event titles in Q1 due to the strikes. Tonight, sources tell us that the Adam Wingard directed monster mash movie is seeing $8M from previews that began at 3Pm Thursday in roughly 3,400 locations. That’s arguably the second-best previews ever for a Legendary’s Monsterverse movie following the first 2014 Godzilla which posted $9.3M. That Gareth Edwards directed lizard movie went on to make $38.4M on its first Friday with a 3-day of $93.1M.
Warner Bros didn’t return request for comment on tonight’s estimates.

Key cast members Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle return and are joined by new addition Dan Stevens in this rip roaring, action-packed, sometimes frustrating continuation of Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise. Following the apocalyptic battle between Godzilla, Kong, and Mecha Godzilla in 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong, the two titans have staked their claims on their relative realms, Godzilla takes the planet’s surface, while Kong reigns over the newly discovered Hollow Earth. However, when an unknown force begins sending mysterious signals, Jia (Hottle) –...

The utterly convoluted lengths filmmakers will go to contrive some excuse to make monsters fight has become exasperating. Moreover, the unique paradox at the heart of Legendary’s Monsterverse series continues. Much like “Godzilla Vs. Kong,” also directed by Adam Wingard, the sequel, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” faces many of the same fundamental problems, and these franchise filmmakers haven’t all addressed the issues, nor even seem to see them as such.

Since 1954, Godzilla has been a mainstay of the big screen, with the giant lizard standing tall in films like Godzilla Minus One and Legendary's Monsterverse movies.
Starting as a metaphor for nuclear disaster in post-war Japan, the iconic Kaiju evolved into so much more, appearing in 38 films and standing as the "longest continuously running film franchise" (according to the Guinness Book of World Records).
Produced by Toho in Japan and Legendary Pictures stateside, Godzilla now shows no sign of slowing down, winning an Oscar award for its latest iteration in 2023's Godzilla Minus One.
