One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”
She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. Upon being called to the stage and handed the gold-plated emblem of the city of Cannes by French actress Juliette Binoche, the 74-year-old received a thunderous 2.5-minute standing ovation from the more than 2,000 guests who packed the Grand Lumiere Theatre. Bradley Cooper left the 2024 Oscars empty-handed on Sunday, but the best actor nominee for Maestro got a moment to shine among the staff and students of one of TV’s biggest shows when he appeared on the episode of Abbott Elementary that immediately followed the ceremony.
Cooper, whose passion project Maestro was nominated for seven Academy Awards but won none, took a self-deprecating turn in the cameo as himself on ABC’s award-winning hit comedy. In the episode’s opening moments, the star of the biopic focusing on legendary composer Leonard Bernstein’s tormented personal life is seen at the titular school as the guest of a second-grader pal, Kaleel, but the class fails to recognize the star.
“Oh, I just loved you in The Holdovers. It was just so heartwarming,” Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) tells Cooper, perhaps mistaking him for Paul Giamatti, who was also up for best actor for that movie this year.

“Oppenheimer” dominated the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, winning the prize for best cast, as well as statues for Cillian Murphy’s lead performance and Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting work. The drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb was an unexpected box office hit last summer and is considered a front-runner for next month’s Academy Awards.
The cast of HBO’s “Succession” was named best ensemble in a drama series for successfully pulling off their final season of familial power-grabbing and back-stabbing, while FX’s “The Bear,” a pressure-cooker look at restaurant life, earned a best comedy series ensemble prize. It was a free-wheeling night of surprises, sure-things and plenty of f-bombs, as many of the winners spoke frankly about the struggles and sacrifices that characterize a life in the arts.

Michael Strahan was fired up after Emma Stone’s appearance on the set of Good Morning America.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer was back in the studio after missing Monday’s episode due to being on the West Coast with his NFL on Fox colleagues for playoff game coverage.

Stone was there to discuss her Oscar-nominated film Poor Things, and she also got the opportunity to reunite with another Hollywood star at GMA.
Bryce Dallas Howard appeared on GMA to promote Argylle, her new movie, with a star-studded cast that includes Henry Cavill, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bryan Cranston.
While those projects might have been exciting for them to discuss on the show, the two friends were more excited about seeing each other at the same location.

While the rebooted “Scream” franchise may be floundering, the writers and directors of the fifth and sixth “Scream” films are forging a new path thanks to a partnership with production company MRC.
Radio Silence directing team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella, plus screenwriter James Vanderbilt’s Project X Entertainment banner (co-founded with William Sherak and Paul Neinstein), have announced a production and financing pact to make two to three genre films a year with MRC. Both Radio Silence and Vanderbilt had stepped away from the “Scream” franchise after the sixth installment and were not attached to the seventh film, which currently does not have a director after Christopher Landon exited following the cast shakeups.
The new collaboration will focus on horror and thriller films and encompass a range of up-and-coming and established writers and directors in the genre space. MRC is the studio most recently behind “Saltburn,” “American Fiction,...

“The Bear” has just won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
In addition to Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, “The Bear” was nominated for four acting awards: Abby Elliot and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the Supporting Actor categories, and Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edibiri as Lead Actors, with White and Edibiri picking up wins earlier in the evening.
Season 2 of “The Bear” premiered in June 2023 on FX, earning an A- rating from IndieWire. The Golden Globes are back! Was it worth it? I mean, if Rosamund Pike is gonna serve on the red carpet like this, why not? The host, popular stand-up comedian Jo Koy who, to be frank, most of the nominees in the Beverly Hilton had never heard of, bombed spectacularly but as he noted, he’d only been hired 10 days before. Not ideal. The big news of the night was what amounted to public relations wins for “Oppenheimer” which won Motion Picture – Drama and “Poor Things” which took the Musical or Comedy honor.

Steven Spielberg memorably thanked Tom Cruise last year for saving the movie business with “Top Gun: Maverick,” but it appears Meryl Streep has a different selection. While attending this year’s Palm Springs Film Awards, the Oscar winner called out Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” for saving the movies and “all of our jobs” last summer. The blockbuster comedy was the highest grossing movie of 2023 with $1.4 billion in ticket sales. It also stands as the highest-grossing Warner Bros. film in history.
Streep took the stage after Billie Eilish and Finneas accepted an award for their work on the “Barbie” music soundtrack. The Grammy and Oscar-winning duo is back in the awards race this year for their song “What Was I Made For?” They earned the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs Film Awards, becoming the first songwriters to ever receive the honor.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Jeffrey Wright with the Montecito Award at a Feb. 15 event. At the event, Wright will discuss his career leading up to this year’s performance in “American Fiction,” for which he has received lead actor nominations for the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
“I’ve been a fan of Mr. Wright since I first saw him in 1993 in the original Broadway production of “Angels in America.” I’ve since admired that he brings a high level of class and integrity to every role he does. Yet, no film had capitalized on his extraordinary range and virtuosity until “American Fiction.” It is about time,” Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
Wright has received Tony, Emmy, AFI and Golden Globe awards and has appeared in “Rustin,” “No Time to Die,” “Westworld,” “Asteroid City” and “The Batman.”

“Wonka,” a fantasy musical starring Timothée Chalamet as the eccentric chocolatier, charmed in its box office debut, collecting $39 million over the weekend.
It’s a sweet start, as long as the $125 million-budgeted family film has momentum around the holidays. The good news for Warner Bros. is that December releases rarely generate huge opening weekends but tend to stick around on the big screen and show staying power through the new year. To that end, it’s promising that “Wonka” landed an “A-” CinemaScore from audiences. Critics have been kind as well, bestowing “Wonka” with an 83% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a sign the PG film will be able to endure against competition from upcoming releases such as Universal and Illumination’s animated “Migration,” Warner’s musical adaptation of “The Color Purple” and the DC Comics sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”

As of publication, Michelle Williams is understood by many as one of the most gifted actors working today. She has two Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, has been nominated for a Tony Award, and boasts a whopping five Academy Award nominations. Her breakthrough performance in "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005 earned her first Oscar nomination, and she's been one of the most highly sought-after performers ever since. But "Brokeback Mountain" was not Williams' first role, nor was she some actor plucked from obscurity and tossed into prestige cinema. For six seasons, Williams starred as Jen Lindley on "Dawson's Creek," one of the most formative teen dramas in television history.
And yet when she nabbed the role of Alma Beers del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," the general conversation wasn't fixated on her years as a television teen star, nor were people dismissing her casting due to previous appearances in teen films...

The legendary Peter O’Toole was born on August 2, 1932. One of the most esteemed actors of his generation, he also holds the dubious record of earning the most Best Actor Oscar nominations (eight) without a win. O’Toole’s trophy case isn’t exactly bare — he won three Golden Globe Awards from eight nominations and received an honorary Academy Award for his lengthy career.

After a distinguished film career that began at age 10, Scarlett Johansson finally became an Academy Award nominee, earning a Best Actress nomination for her performance in “Marriage Story,” as well as being nominated as Best Supporting Actress for “Jojo Rabbit.” (Johansson is only the 12th actor in Oscar history to manage that feat.) But don’t feel too sorry for her: since 2018, she has reigned as the world’s highest-paid actress, and, with her films having grossed $14.3 billion worldwide, she is the third highest-grossing box-office star of all time.
Her tally of awards and nominations also make an argument for her being one of the best actresses of her generation. Johansson has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, three SAG Awards and has won a BAFTA Award from four nominations. (And she is nominated for all three of those awards this year.) But her acting prowess is not just limited to films.

When former HBO executive Kary Antholis convinced veteran British producer Jane Featherstone to board a project about the Chernobyl disaster, the prospect of such an undertaking was far from a “slam dunk.”
“It had to be pushed over the line,” says Featherstone, “and that was with everybody supporting it.” But in the end, the historical drama from “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin was, as the producer puts it, a “lucky, lucky call” — and one that richly paid off.
The 2019 HBO and Sky miniseries about the 1986 nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine starring Jared Harris and Emily Watson won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, and put Featherstone’s new venture, Sister Pictures, on the map.
Few in Britain were surprised when, later that year, the production company expanded into a global studio simply titled Sister. Featherstone, who spent the previous 16 years with the Kudos production banner, partnered with Shine Group...

“I particularly love Wednesday because she shares my worldview on things. And that was fun to explore,” shared Tim Burton in a behind-the-scenes featurette about making the Netflix series. It marks the director’s first foray into TV after a film career that spawned classics like “Beetlejuice,” “Batman,” “Edward Scissorhands” and “Ed Wood.” His animator’s apprenticeship with Walt Disney Studios in the early 1980s laid the foundation for Burton’s two Oscar nominated films, “Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie.” Forty years into his storied career, the multi-talented writer, producer, animator and director stepped behind the camera for his first television series.
“Wednesday” tells the story of the Addams family through the lens of 16-year-old Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega) as she enrolls in the extraordinary Nevermore Academy — a boarding school designed for the outcasts of the world, from werewolves to sirens. As she grapples with her own psychic abilities,...

It all comes down to this, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fanatics!
Prime Video on Monday dropped the official trailer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5, and it looks like Midge's quest for stardom is in focus.
"Midge finds herself closer than ever to the success she's dreamed of, only to discover that closer than ever is still so far away," the official logline warns.
With nine episodes remaining, there's a good chance the final season could begin with Midge getting closer than ever to her dreams, only to realize there is far more work ahead.
The first-look photos also confirm that Luke Kirby will be back.
After spending a season as a series regular, he is set to be back as a recurring guest star.
It's unclear whether this decision was made for storytelling purposes or if the actor had other commitments.

If critical admiration were tracked like baseball stats, writer/director Martin McDonagh would easily be an All-Star. Since 2008, he may only have made a quartet of feature films, but in the film world, he has gone four for four in earning critical acclaim. After winning an Academy Award in 2004 for “Six Shooter,” his first live action short film (which starred Brendan Gleeson in the beginning of a beautiful partnership), McDonagh went on to write and direct four contemporary classics: “In Bruges” (2008), “Seven Psychopaths” (2012), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022).
In addition to his film success, McDonagh (in his spare time) is one of the most prominent playwrights of his generation, with acclaimed productions both on Broadway and in London’s West End. The success of his plays, many of which are set in the small towns and villages of Ireland, have been much-awarded on both sides of the pond,...

There was a point in his career when 45-year-old Irish actor Michael Fassbender starred in the biggest movies in Hollywood. He also received various accolades and recognitions for his talent, including a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics’ Choice Movie Award, four British Academy Film Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and nominations for two Academy Awards. However, fans were surprised when he suddenly decided to lie low for a bit. He last graced the big screen in 2019 for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, where he played the powerful mutant Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto. The thing is, he didn’t exactly retire from
