The cast of Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag expands today with Regé-Jean Page joining Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. Soderbergh directs from a script by David Koepp, with Caset Silver and Greg Jacobs producing. Focus Features is setting up Black Bag, with filming happening in London. Plot details remain a mystery. However, the film’s story is a spy thriller unfolding in the United Kingdom.
As The Hollywood Reporter pointed out in January, Soderbergh and Blanchett previously worked together on his 2006 noir thriller The Good German. Blanchett played a part in the film Ocean’s 8, as part of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 franchise. Soderbergh produced Ocean’s 8 but didn’t direct that one. He and Fassbender previously worked together on his 2011 action thriller Haywire. And in addition to collaborating on Presence, Soderbergh and Koepp also worked together on the 2022 thriller Kimi.

Steven Soderbergh’s almost took on “Death Becomes Her.”
The “sex, lies, and videotape” filmmaker told Variety that following his breakout Sundance debut, he was approached to direct “Death Becomes Her” in 1992.
“I want to preface this by saying I hate it when people talk about things that they passed on. For whatever reason, I just feel like I am not convinced it’s good form to do that,” Soderbergh said.
Soderbergh added of the script, “I do remember reading it and immediately thinking it was very funny. And also immediately recognizing that this is so far beyond my capability. The technology they were using was intimidating. It was a hard ‘you got the wrong guy,’ is what it was.”
“Death Becomes Her” was directed by Robert Zemeckis, and starred Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as rival immortals who fight over a love interest (Bruce Willis). The film was a box office hit,...

“Presence,” a twisty haunted house thriller, marks the second collaboration between Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp. The duo, who are longtime friends, also partnered on 2022’s “Kimi,” which featured Zoë Kravitz as an agoraphobic tech wiz.
But Soderergh and Koepp entered each other’s orbit long before “Kimi” debuted. Koepp wrote the screenplay for the 1992 black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” a cult favorite that was also a pioneer in its use of computer graphics.

Turns out Zoë Kravitz did, in fact, change the name of her provocative “Pussy Island.” Kravitz’s feature directorial debut, which she co-wrote with “High Fidelity” scribe E.T. Feigenbaum, will receive a theatrical release from Amazon MGM Studios on August 23 as the newly-titled “Blink Twice.”
Kravitz previously told The Wall Street Journal Magazine that she would not change the name of the feature after writing it in 2017 and later updating the script “a million times” as the #MeToo movement made her rethink the premise.
“Blink Twice” follows tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum), who invites cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) on a dream vacation to his private island. Yet, while on the trip, strange things start to happen and Frida begins to question her reality.
Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, and Geena Davis round out the cast. “Blink Twice” is produced by writer/director Kravitz,...

Perhaps the biggest reason why the ghost story has enjoyed such popularity and power for so long is because it lies at the crux of some of humanity's most fundamental mysteries. For one thing, it addresses the question of life after death in a way that doesn't require belief in pearly gates or eternal hellfire, as it presupposes the existence of the soul. After all, if a person's energy can change the mood of a room, can't that same energy exist independently of a body and remain noticeable? Additionally, the total unknowability of ghosts is at once a source of fear and melancholy: if such entities exist, we can't know for sure what their intentions are, and if we might be facing such a fate, wouldn't such constraints as having no body and no voice be remarkably frustrating and lonely?
Steven Soderbergh's latest feature, "Presence," addresses these concepts in a remarkably effective fashion.

Black Bag: Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender to star in Steven Soderbergh, David Koepp spy thriller
We have a double header of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp news to report today. Not only has their ghost story Presence (read our review Here) secured distribution through Neon, but The Hollywood Reporter has also revealed that they’re re-teaming for a spy thriller called Black Bag, which is set to star Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley) and Michael Fassbender (The Killer).
Soderbergh and Koepp are currently seeking financing and distribution for Black Bag, with the project having gone out to studios and streamers last week. If one of the studios and streamers decided to pick up the project, that hasn’t been reported yet. They better move quickly, because Soderbergh is hoping to get this film into production in May.

In the wake of Netflix acquiring It’s What’s Inside out of Sundance 2024, another hot genre movie that world premiered at Sundance has found itself a distribution home this week.
Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story Presence has been acquired by Neon, with Deadline first reporting the news. The site notes, “I haven’t got a deal number to share, but there were about 10 bidders so it’s a healthy sum for a thriller that has gotten uniformly strong reviews at the festival.”
One of those strong reviews came from Meagan Navarro right here on Bloody Disgusting, who awarded Presence 4 stars out of a possible 5 stars in her review published over the weekend.
Meagan raves, “Unsane director Steven Soderbergh reunites with Kimi screenwriter David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) to give an innovative new spin on the quintessential ghost story. Presence frames its haunted events entirely from the perspective of its ghost.

“Presence,” a twisty new thriller that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, has sold to Neon.
The movie, which is directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, puts an inventive spin on the haunted house genre. It unfolds from the perspective of the spectral entity and is primarily interested in dramatizing the issues of the people living in the home, who seem to be grappling with a lot of interpersonal problems.
“I wanted to find a different way to tell the story,” Soderbergh told Variety in a recent profile. “Everything is revealed through the glimpses of this family that this presence sees. And the whole ghost genre element is a Trojan horse to show a group of people in danger of falling apart.”
The market at Sundance has been slower than usual, with deals taking longer to hammer out — that’s a sign of how challenging the box office has become for indie pictures.

Indie distributor Neon has snapped up Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, the supernatural thriller Presence, at the Sundance Film Festival.
A director who’s long experimented with genres and filmmaking styles, Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, the supernatural thriller Presence, sounds as formally unconventional as his 2018 iPhone-shot thriller, Unsane. It’s shot entirely in one location – a surburban house – and reportedly filmed entirely from the perspective of a ghost stalking an increasingly unsettled family.
It’s an experimental concept that has evidently paid off, with its debut at the Sundance film festival joined by some positive reviews, with even the less glowing ones conceding that it’s an intriguing technical exercise. The aura surrounding the film – no doubt helped by Steven Soderbergh’s reputation – is such that independent production/distribution company Neon has now acquired the film.

Sundance film festival: The director tells a haunted house tale from the perspective of the spirit in a visually interesting yet dramatically underwhelming gambit
For the majority of film-makers, the restrictions insisted by Covid became a stifling force and created a clear dividing line between those who could flourish in extremely prohibitive circumstances and those who could not. Steven Soderbergh, a director who has never allowed anything – from Oscar glory to blockbuster success – to kill his plucky spirit of invention, made one of the only essential pandemic movies with the maddeningly underseen thriller Kimi, a sleek and canny new-tech upgrade of a paranoid 70s thriller. He found a way, along with the screenwriter David Koepp, to maximise limitations and the two have smartly reunited for a project that carries on-paper similarities.

Unsane director Steven Soderbergh reunites with Kimi screenwriter David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) to give an innovative new spin on the quintessential ghost story. Presence frames its haunted events entirely from the perspective of its ghost. From the opening frame until the end credits, audiences see the thrilling story unfold through chilling narrative twists via Soderbergh’s experimentation with form and technique. Using the camera’s gaze as the ghost’s observing eyes isn’t the only trick up Soderbergh and Koepp’s sleeves, ensuring this exciting shakeup of the haunted house keeps you guessing.

It’s an invigorating feeling to know early on in a movie that you’re in confident hands, and Steven Soderbergh conveys that assurance instantaneously in the opening moments of Presence. Shooting under his usual Dp pseudonym of Peter Andrews, the director guides his subjective camera into every corner of a handsome old two-story house in a leafy suburb, darting through some spaces and sneaking in close for a longer look at others. The gentle piano score doesn’t exactly hint at menace, but we know something is a little off in this desirable property, which stands empty and is about to be shown to prospective buyers.
Following their collaboration on the taut thriller Kimi, Soderbergh again works from an expertly honed screenplay by distinguished vet David Koepp and the pair seem to be in their element building suspense in a single setting. Rather than constrict the storytelling in any way,...

“Presence,” a ghost story directed by Steven Soderbergh, is set entirely inside a lovely, renovated, 100-year-old suburban home, and before the characters even have a chance to move in, the place is already occupied. The camera literally seems to be peering at things, staring out the second-floor windows, then coming down the stairs to witness the arrival of a harried real-estate agent, then the family of four she’s about to sell the house to. Darting from room to room in an unbroken wide-angle-lens shot, the camera gives us an impromptu tour of the house, letting us drink in the crisp mint-green walls, the vintage wood that lines everything, the ancient smoke-glass mirror and polished oak-board floors and elegant sprawling kitchen. Yet this is no mere real-estate porn. For the entire rest of the movie, Soderbergh employs that roving, bobbing and weaving voyeuristic camera’s-eye view. “Presence” might just be...

Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender are attached to star in Black Bag, a hot spy thriller package from Steven Soderbergh that has hit the Hollywood market.
Soderbergh is on board to direct the feature project, which has a script by David Keopp. This is the latest team-up between the director and writer, who have the thriller Presence premiering at the Sundance Film Festival Friday.
Like many of Soderbergh’s projects, this one is being kept hush-hush although it is known to be set in the UK.
The project hit the desks of studios and streamers this week as it looks for financing and distribution. The plan is to shoot in May in London but no deals are set yet.
Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs are producing.

No one quite knows what to expect of the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival, the first major fest following the end of the dual Hollywood strikes.
The strikes, which stopped production during the months when many Sundance features normally film, have had some impact on the lineup of U.S.-produced titles, with insiders noting that many titles needed some more time, post-strikes, to finish production than the Sundance submissions deadlines allowed. A slimmed U.S. Dramatic Competition section is now 10 films, down from 13.
As for sales, a top agent pegs this year’s market as landing “somewhere between last year’s Sundance and this year’s Toronto.” That is to say, there likely will be several big sellers like Chloe Domont’s Fair Play (Sundance) and Richard Linklater’s Hitman (Toronto), both of which landed at Netflix in big eight-figure deals, followed by a long tail of...

It’s crazy for me to realize this, but this year marks my fifteenth time covering the Sundance Film Festival for JoBlo. Granted, two were virtual due to the pandemic, but I’ve made my way to lovely Park City, Utah, thirteen times over the years to catch all the most interesting indie flicks coming soon to theatres (or- nowadays – streaming). In my time at Sundance, I was lucky to see classics like Call Me By Your Name, Whiplash (at a genuinely unforgettable press screening), The Raid 2, and so many more.
While – to me anyway – the festival’s output has been a little lower key in recent years, every year I know I’ll see at least a ten or so titles that will resonate with our audience. Last year’s midnight entry, Talk to Me, made over $90 million worldwide, so even in a quiet year, there’s a chance a blockbuster will emerge.

Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director behind Erin Brockovich, Traffic, and the Ocean’s trilogy, says artificial intelligence is a “serious issue.” But the availability of streaming data — or lack thereof — has him more concerned. “Data transparency is the one that keeps me up at night,” the director told Defector in a new interview. For example, Soderbergh said that he never saw data while working with Max, which released his films Let Them All Talk and Kimi, his reality competition Finding Magic Mike, and his new limited series Full Circle. “I was given adjectives,” he said. “‘We feel good about these numbers.’ ‘The comps are right in line with what we were hoping for.’” Claudette Barius/Warner Bros./Courtesy: Everett Collection The filmmaker has two theories about why streaming platforms withhold the numbers. “One is that they’re all making a lot more money than anybody knows and that they’re willing to tell us,...

Everyone is hiding something in twisty Max thriller “Full Circle” — right down to the view outside the Manhattan apartment of parents Sam (Claire Danes) and Derek (Timothy Olyphant).

The new series follows Soderbergh’s recent Max noir series “Full Circle,” starring Claire Danes and Zazie Beetz, which premiered on July 13. “Command Z” is set to premiere July 17 and will be available on Soderbergh’s website, Extension765.com.
“Here’s the funny part. Traversing our wormhole involves ingesting a synthetic substance related to psychedelics and playing the theme song from the movie ‘Mahogany,’” says the Ozian Cera. He leads Wood Jr., Radcliffe and Schreiber on a series of missions, hacking...

At a time when overall deals are getting the side-eye, no disapproving stares need be sent toward Steven Soderbergh. The Oscar- and Emmy-winning director signed a three-year deal with WarnerMedia in 2020, when Max was still HBO Max and HBO still had exclusive rights to its original library, and he’s continue to deliver throughout the streamer’s tumultuous transition — one film per year, including the third in his trilogy with Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike’s Last Dance”), a buzzy thriller starring Zoë Kravitz (“Kimi”), and a little movie featuring the one-and-only Meryl Streep (“Let Them All Talk”).
For an artist who once thought he was done with filmmaking for good, Soderbergh has become the portrait of reliability. People can quibble over quality — none of his films have garnered the awards attention seen in his early career or the critical adoration of, say, HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra” — but he’s produced thoughtful stories,...

Everything comes full circle with Steven Soderbergh’s return to TV.

“Full Circle” follows an investigation into a botched kidnapping that uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City. Claire Danes and Timothy Olyphant star as affluent parents whose teenage son goes missing.
Zazie Beetz, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Cch Pounder, Phaldut Sharma, Adia, Sheyi Cole, Gerald Jones, Suzanne Savoy, Ethan Stoddard, Lucian Zanes, and Dennis Quaid appear in the series, which premiered at 2023 Tribeca.
Ed Solomon wrote the series, with Soderbergh directing and executive producing. Fellow executive producer Solomon also penned Soderbergh’s previous series “Mosaic” starring Sharon Stone; Soderbergh additionally helmed show “The Knick” as well.

"They're all hiding sh*t!" Oh I bet they are. HBO has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a new series titled Full Circle, yet another crime thriller joining the hundreds already created for and streaming on streaming networks these days. It'll be streaming in July, and I'm sure the full trailer will give us a few more hints. "Everything is connected." The vague synopsis doesn't reveal much - only setting up the crime story at the core of this Max series. An investigation into a botched kidnapping uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City. The cast includes Soderbergh's Kimi star Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, Cch Pounder, and Dennis Quaid. In all honesty, this doesn't look like one of Soderbergh's best, but I am curious to see where it is headed and what is "connected" and...

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are just a few pairs of celebrity couples that are basically considered unofficial royalty. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are another beloved couple that has stolen the spotlight over the years.
Their lasting love and, of course, impressive acting careers aren’t just the only things Hanks and Wilson are well-known for. As many of Hollywood’s A-listers can attest to, the couple has a reputation for throwing dinner parties that can be a bit odd. With that being said, what exactly is happening at Hanks and Wilson‘s dinner parties?

Over the course of her career, Zoë Kravitz has built quite an eclectic resume for herself. Acting-wise, she’s starred in high-profile projects like Big Little Lies, Divergent, and The Batman. She’s also partnered with big brands like Ysl as a model. Kravitz also has a flair for music and has released multiple songs. Most recently, she worked on Midnights, co-writing two of Taylor Swift’s newest tunes. But recently, some people have been wondering if Kravitz’s success is due, in large part, to her parents.

While Sick will likely gain attention for its pandemic-driven premise, the new thriller from Scream (1996) screenwriter Kevin Williamson is much more than just a current events-capitalizing scary movie. Lean, intense, and smart, it’s one of the better recent additions to the slasher genre while also being a rare film with something to say about the Covid crisis.
The film takes place in April 2020, during the early days of quarantines, lockdowns, and toilet paper scarcity. College students Parker (Gideon Adlon) and Miri (Bethlehem Million) head to a cabin in the woods to ride out the pandemic and stay safe; they’re joined by Parker’s sort-of boyfriend DJ (Dylan Sprayberry) – as well as a masked killer intent on wreaking their own deadly havoc. It’s a simple premise, knocked out in a tension-filled 82 minutes.

While 2022 marked a personal benchmark in films viewed––over 600, logged away here––the major takeaway was the confirmation of just how much greater an impression the theatrical experience leaves. As noted below, while there were films I viewed at home that I perhaps appreciated more, the fondest memories looking back at the year were at Mike Leigh, Dario Argento, and Toshiro Mifune retrospectives, the bountiful offerings at the New York Film Festival, the Joachim Trier-curated My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument, and even the double bill of Steven Spielberg’s Always and The Terminal we presented at the Roxy. Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
As with every year, 2022 began with me catching up with an exceptional film I’d missed before I submitted my previous “best of” list, and ended with me belatedly seeing another excellent work that was more than worthy of inclusion. My apologies to Davy Chou, whose Return to Seoul would have been a fixture here if I’d have gotten round to it sooner.
Although not quite the embarrassment of cinematic riches that 2021 was, my honorable mentions all show that the art form is still in rude health following the pandemic, with several legendary filmmakers producing some of their most rewarding works in recent memory, many of which narrowly missed inclusion in my personal top 10. Nine years before Steven Soderbergh tipped his hat to Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window" with his superb pandemic-era paranoia thriller "Kimi," the artist of many talents helmed 2013's "Side Effects," another film that owes a heavy debt to Hitch's oeuvre (right down to a move lifted directly out of the "Psycho" playbook). The movie stars Rooney Mara as Emily Taylor, a New York socialite who drives her car into a parking lot wall in an apparent attempt to kill herself, her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) having only just finished a four-year stint in prison for insider trading.
Believing the stress of Martin's return, coupled with that from their sudden loss of wealth, was the trigger for her heightened emotional duress, Emily's current psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) prescribes her a newly-approved medication called Ablixa under the advice of her former psychiatrist, Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). When tragedy strikes the Taylors,...

How might one sum up 2022 and all of its movie-related (stop-motion) monkey business?
These past 12 months have been a pretty darn bumpy ride, complete with their share of hand-wringing over the future of cinema. On the flip side, they saw the movie industry make vital gains in representation, all while unique, challenging films misfired left and right financially, and even superhero tentpoles caught the box office blues. Meanwhile, other movies went far harder than expected, giving us writers a free excuse to use the term "maximalist" many times over. (No shade here -- it's a fun word!) They also taught us valuable lessons about the power of radical empathy, the value of vulnerability, and the joys of punching fascists, colonialists, and other oppressors in the face.
But before we get into the top 10 of it all, some honorable mentions -- call them my alternate top 10. Their ranks include:

Of all our craft Best of 2022 lists, film scores was the one where there was the widest list of nominees and least amount of consensus about a top 10. There was just such a wide variety of great work done that delineating what was best wasn’t always clear.
What was clear from our picks, however, was that a number of the best composers working today — from Michael Giacchino to Michael Abels — were on their game in 2022; it was also apparent that this was a year of innovative uses of film music that played a subtle and almost sound design-like role. And by no surprise, so much of that best work came from director-composer collaborations that started early and stretched over many months, sometimes over year, and evolved to find the best way for the music sit in the film.
Chris O’Falt, Steve Greene, David Ehrlich, and Erik Adams also contributed to this article.

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” is almost here and the film’s debut trailer gives a great impression of what we can expect from the final film in the trilogy.

How certain films have decided to handle the pandemic has been fascinating. A film like "Three Thousand Years of Longing" reflects the world fairly accurately, where some people wear masks in public and others don't. "Confess, Fletch" makes an off-hand comment about the pandemic as to why Kyle MacLachlan's character doesn't shake hands. "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn" conducts a PTA meeting outside to have open air circulation. Then there are the movies that use the pandemic to thematically link with their protagonists.
This is captured in Steven Soderbergh's crackerjack thriller "Kimi," where Zoë Kravitz's character is an agoraphobic person living in a time where going out in public is also a major health risk. So, when she does eventually have to leave her apartment and interact with people, the tension is unbearable. Venturing out into everyday society is now not something we take for granted.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Movies: "No Sudden Move" and "Kimi"
Where You Can Stream Them: HBO Max
The Pitch: In "No Sudden Move," director Steven Soderbergh returns to the heist genre with an all-star cast and a home invasion gone wrong in '50s Detroit. In "Kimi," Soderbergh marries technology fears with a familiar scenario centered on a homebound "voice stream interpreter" (Zoë Kravitz) who overhears something she shouldn't have.
Why They're Essential Viewing: After retiring and un-retiring, there were a few years there where Soderbergh was focused more on TV projects like his Cinemax series "The Knick." It's been a while since we saw a movie of his enjoy a theatrical run -- thanks in part, perhaps, to the pandemic he predicted with his 2011 thriller "Contagion.
