Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms will exit CBS’ long-running “The NFL Today” studio show as part of a revamp that brings former star quarterback Matt Ryan into the program’s line-up.
When viewers next tune in to the show as the NFL season kicks off this fall, they will see Ryan, known mostly for his time with the Atlanta Falcons, paired with James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill Cowher and JJ Watt. The programming maneuvers have long been expected, but they are the first at CBS Sports under David Berson, who recently took the reins of the Paramount Global unit.
“Matt had an outstanding first year at CBS Sports, excelling as both a studio and game analyst,” said Berson, in a statement. “He is the consummate team player and a Hall of Fame person. We love the chemistry he has with the studio crew and we’re excited to see him...

Gayle King returned to CBS Mornings after a lengthy hiatus, revealing she’d been out of the country.
The morning show host shared updates about her whereabouts in a series of social media updates.
Gayle revealed it was a fun getaway to Japan as she was on a “girls trip” with her close friend Oprah Winfrey and other friends.
In an Instagram video she shared this week, Gayle appears with Oprah and two other women from the Land of the Rising Sun.
The video, set to OneRepublic’s I Ain’t Worried, shows highlights from the trip as the women walk the streets of Japan, check out various attractions and sights, and enjoy some of the cuisine.
During one moment of the highlight reel, Oprah even enjoys some okra.

Jon Stewart made headlines in February when he appeared on “CBS Mornings” ahead of his return to hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and said that Apple canceled his previous talk show, “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” because “they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.” On the April 1 episode of “The Daily Show,” Stewart went into greater detail about Apple’s concerns over the direction of his now-axed talk show and corresponding podcast.
Stewart was interviewing Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan on “The Daily Show” and told her that he once pitched to have her as a guest on “The Problem” podcast. Considering Khan’s work at the FTC targets tech giants’ monopolistic practices, Apple allegedly did not want Stewart bringing her on the program to presumably talk about such topics.

Some 8 1/2 years after leaving his iconic host seat on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart returns to the Comedy Central staple tonight at 11 p.m. Et/Pt and will remain as host each Monday thereafter through the 2024 Election Cycle. His first guest be Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist. The debut episode will be simulcast on CMT, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, Pop and TV Land. The every-Monday hosting stint follows in the recent tradition of Rachel Maddow’s similar set-up at MSNBC.
Stewart hosted “The Daily Show” for 16 years, taking over from Craig Kilborn in 1999 and transforming it into appointment viewing with its blend of incisive media criticism and political satire. During Stewart’s tenure, the show won 24 Emmys and three Peabodys and served as a launch pad for the likes of Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Michael Che and Samantha Bee. Ahead of his return as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart stopped by “CBS Mornings” to explain why it was finally time to return to his old job. Stewart hosted the network’s flagship news show from 1999 to 2015. He’ll now be hosting only Monday episodes throughout the 2024 election cycle. Stewart said he needed a platform to speak about the upcoming election, which he no longer had after Apple canceled his talk show last year.
“I wanted a place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season,” Stewart said. “I thought I was going to do it over at — they call it Apple TV+. It’s a television enclave, very small. It’s like living in Malibu. But they decided … they felt that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.”
Variety has reached out to Apple for comment.

Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy aren’t the only ones who are likely to be feeling intense pressure on Super Bowl Sunday.
Nate Burleson will be just as busy this weekend as the quarterbacks for the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. He is part of CBS’ “NFL Today” pre-game show. He will be helping to call the game for younger audiences as part of a Super Bowl simulcast on Nickelodeon, the kids-cable network that is, like CBS, owned by Paramount Global. And no matter how he fares in those programs, he must be ready to go again just hours later when he takes part in his regular job at “CBS Mornings.” After a full day of Sunday-night sportscasting, Burleson will have to be up and ready well before 4 a.m. Pacific Time.

The Golden Globes have found a new home. The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards will air on CBS in January (with a streaming option available on Paramount+ for cord-cutters), following years as a staple of NBC’s January programming lineup.
“We’re so proud to bring the Golden Globes to CBS to celebrate 81 years of award show history,” said Jay Penske, CEO, Chairman and Founder, Penske Media and owner of Dick Clark Productions. “CBS has demonstrated an impressive 30-year commitment to the Grammys and been instrumental to their long-term success. In CBS we found an ideal partner who understands the value of live entertainment programming and whose multi-platform distribution model is reflective of how global audiences choose to consume content today.” (Penske Media also owns Gold Derby.)

When backlash over Bradley Cooper’s nose prosthetic in “Maestro” first erupted in August ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Cooper himself could not speak out to defend his choice as it was in the midst of the SAG-AFTRA strike. He finally got the opportunity to do so during an interview with “CBS Mornings,” explaining that he first attempted to play famed composer Leonard Bernstein without the prosthetic but ultimately decided “we just had to do it.”
“Nothing catches me off guard,” Cooper said when asked about the initial backlash over the fake nose. “You never know what’s going to happen. I’ve done this whole project out of love and it’s so clear to me where I come from. My nose is very similar to Lenny’s actually. The prosthetic is actually like a silk sheet.”

SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are still at the negotiating table as we reach day 117 of the actors’ strike, but Tyler Perry argues that the union needs to recognize when it has won “for now.”
Appearing on “CBS Mornings” Tuesday, the film and TV mogul, who recently signed a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, made his first public comments on the strike after co-signing a proposal sent to SAG-AFTRA brass in October calling for a revised residuals structure and removing the cap on union dues. Perry reminded that SAG-AFTRA is only negotiating a three-year contract, noting that prolonging the strike may only present a challenge in future and inevitable dealings.
“Here I am, a studio head and an owner of a streamer, but also understanding how it is for the working actor,” Perry said (via Variety). “I get what we’re fighting for … I paid Cicely Tyson $1 million for one day...

Tyler Perry appeared on “CBS Mornings” Tuesday and was asked to speak publicly for the first time about the SAG-AFTRA strike, which remains ongoing after the union responded to the AMPTP’s “best and final” offer by saying the two groups still differ on “several essential items.” Although Perry praised SAG-AFTRA negotiators, he also said the union needs to realize when it’s won “for now.” The media mogul noted that SAG-AFTRA is only negotiating a three-year contract, inferring that it might not be the best strategy to continue prolonging the strike so the union can get everything it wants now when more negotiations are in store in the future.

"Blue, she be frontin' on me a little bit, but I catch her," he said. "I catch her in the corner, you know? Now she asks me if this is cool - her sneakers or whatever she's wearing." While Blue Ivy wasn't around to refute her dad's claims, she does appear to have taken some major style cues from both her parents in recent years.

On both “CBS Evening News” and “CBS Mornings” Tuesday, the news network took a moment to spotlight one of its longtime producers, the Gaza-based Marwan Al-Ghoul, as the Israel-Hamas War rages on his doorstep and fatalities for journalists in the region continue to rise.
Speaking with foreign correspondent Holly Williams while she was just 60 miles away in East Jerusalem, the journalist expressed that he is “worried” for his and his family’s safety while airstrikes continue and an impending ground invasion from the Israeli military brew.
“We are so worried about you,” Williams told Al-Ghoul.
“You are right. I am worried, too. I am concerned of my family,” he responded. “This makes me sometimes angry and sometimes I feel like I need to cry.”
Asked what an Israeli ground invasion would mean for him and his family, he responded that it’s a “difficult” question to answer.

Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan will soon have to greet ABC’s morning viewers from a decidedly different locale.
As part of a larger move by Walt Disney Co., all of the company’s New York properties are slated to move in 2025 to a building in downtown New York in a neighborhood known as Hudson Square. That will include some programs already ensconced in well known studios, such as “GMA” and “Live with Kelly and Mark.” The move isn’t scheduled to take place for some time, but staffers are already coming to grips with how it might affect the program’s standing in TV’s non-stop morning-news wars.
“‘Good Morning America’ is defined by the strength of our team in front of and behind the camera, quality of our reporting, and the long, trusted relationship with our viewers,” ABC News said in a statement. “Moving all ABC...

News correspondents are trained to keep their emotions in check, but sometimes a story comes along that makes such a feat all but impossible.
Anderson Cooper, Richard Engel, Holly Wiliams, Trey Yingst, Matt Gutman and Clarissa Ward have been seen on camera in recent days trying to report on a horrific event that is emotionally draining: the invasion of Israel by Hamas militants, replete with violence, hostage-taking and explosive force.
“I’ve seen many challenging things so far,” says Yingst, the Fox News correspondent who is based in Israel and has been reporting on the attack since October 7, when he held forth from his own balcony. He responded to questions via email. “We arrived in the south as Palestinian militants were still killing and kidnapping Israelis. For his eighth studio album, Autumn Variations, Ed Sheeran decided to shake things up. Rather than utilizing the power of a major label (his previous albums were released on Atlantic), he’s released his latest LP independently on his own label, Gingerbread Man Records.
The British singer-songwriter sat down for an interview with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King, and explained why.
“You have to be like, ‘I don’t care what people think.’”
“Each record before I’ve done, like, all the big going in and doing all these radio interviews, and going on the late-night shows, and doing, doing all this stuff,” Sheeran said.

Something was amiss with Michelangelo’s waistline.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the team behind the high school comedy “Superbad,” had sold Brian Robbins, the CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, on the idea of adding some adolescent anarchy into their animated reboot of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” But there was a problem with the initial designs for the film’s four reptile heroes: Instead of looking like muscular teens, these Turtles were scrawny and malnourished, barely strong enough to wield nunchucks or hurl a throwing star. “They looked like they were on Ozempic,” Robbins jokes.
In his peripatetic career, the 59-year-old Robbins has been on every end of these kind of creative discussions, working as an actor, writer, director, producer, digital entrepreneur and now, studio chief. And that separates him from other movie moguls, who arrive at the C-suite from Mba programs and years spent in the corporate trenches.

Lisa Ling has, over the course of her career, traveled to far-off places including Costa Rica and North Korean. Her next stop: CBS News.
Ling, who recently cut ties with CNN after the Warner Bros. Discovery-based cable-news outlet canceled her documentary program, “This Is Life,” will join CBS News as a contributor, says co-president Neeraj Khemlani. She is expected to debut on CBS News later this summer, and will be based in Los Angeles.
“If you look at her work over the years, she is really excellent at embedding with communities,” says the executive, in an interview. “You can only do that if you are afforded time and resources that fits with the kind of storytelling that we do.”

Tom Hanks addressed the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike that began a week ago on “CBS Mornings” with Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson.
“The entire industry is at a crossroads and everybody knows it. Hanks made an appearance to discuss his new book “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece” which tells the fictional story of a set of comic books adapted into a movie, detailing the lives of the people in front of and behind the camera.
