Festival of the Living Dead is not only the latest Tubi Original, it’s the latest film from Jen and Sylvia Soska. That’s a bit of a come down for the sisters, who, after Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary, were loudly proclaimed to be the future of horror. Dave Parker, who was in the same position some years back, recently used a Tubi Original, You Shouldn’t Have Let Me In to prove he can still make an entertaining film. Can the Soska Sisters do the same?

The feature horror film It Lives Inside tells the thrilling story of a falling out between two teenage girls and a demonic entity that results because of it. On set, Dit Kevin Hawkins implemented a purposeful workflow with the entire Pomfort camera department ecosystem to hand off as much information as possible to post-production, which brought the added bonus of simplifying the jobs of the Dp, director, VFX supervisor, and second unit teams.
We got the chance to sit down with Kevin to learn more about the production and his workflow, but first, we asked Kevin to give us some background on himself and his professional life:
My name is Kevin Hawkins and I am an IATSE Icg Dit and colorist based out of Vancouver, Canada. After graduating from film school in 2001, I spent 10 years working as a freelance editor and videographer before moving to Vancouver to be closer to the film industry.

321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.
To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.
To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

Neon released a cryptic new teaser for an unnamed horror film that had the internet playing guessing games early on Friday. While the studio has yet to confirm what movie it’s for, this teaser, which played out a 9-1-1 call against a Polaroid, is likely for the Nicolas Cage thriller Longlegs. Indeed, the teaser ends with a shot of suspiciously long legs, so…

While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.
Skinamarink, The Outwaters, Cocaine Bear, Beau is Afraid, A Knock at the Cabin,...

“You need spiritual realignment— you’re too far from Christ,” has become an increasingly rare statement to hear in contemporary horror films, yet in this year’s Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism— in which a woman with diagnosed schizophrenia is subjected to a violent exorcism of her internal “demons” that goes awry— once again, we’re being confronted with just how scary it must be to completely lose autonomy over one’s own body and belief system. Exorcism movies enjoyed a long streak of popularity in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, as movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Last Exorcism, and anything else with the “E” word in the title seemed to attract both the casual and devout horror crowds and dominated box offices. But for the last handful of years, mainstream horror has largely evaded these types of movies, save for The Conjuring franchise and things less...

Nearly every culture in the world has contributed to the horror genre at one point or another, but it’s pretty clear that Hollywood is still the de facto capital of genre filmmaking. That’s why it makes sense that most popular horror tropes and monsters are based on traditional western mythology and religions, as these films are usually made by – and meant to appeal to – a certain demographic.
However, dealing with the same old ghouls and possessions can get old after a hundred and thirty years of cinema, and that’s why we’re lucky that some filmmakers decide to incorporate elements from lesser-known cultures into their scary stories. Whether it’s a foreign film daring to apply the “Hollywood” treatment to a local monster or a north American production taking inspiration from international legends (like Bishal Dutta’s recent It Lives Inside), some of the best horror experiences...

A jar full of trouble in It Lives Inside
One of this year’s big festival hits, launched at South by Southwest and travelling all around the genre circuit, Bishal Dutta’s It Lives Inside draws from a deep well of Indian mythology to introduce terrors never previously encountered in Western cinema. At the same time, it explores the struggles of Indian American teenager Sam/Samidha (Megan Suri) who feels caught between two cultures and, in particular, at odds with her traditionalist mother (Neeru Bajwa). The two storylines are deftly interwoven, with lots of sharp observations, and have made a big impression on audiences around the world.
Last month I had to opportunity to speak with Bishal, who is thrilled by the way that his film has been received. It’s great, he says, to have been able to get Indian Americans onscreen, when they’re seriously under-represented, but his...

The film is now the territory’s highest grossing event cinema release, surpassing National Theatre Live’s filmed play “Prima Facie,” starring Jodie Comer, which collected £5.5 million in 2022. Swifties will now strive to take the film beyond the £9.8 million earnings of “Michael Jackson: This Is It” (2009) to make it the highest-grossing concert film in the U.K. and Ireland.
Tim Richards, founder and CEO of cinema chain Vue International, said: “We saw an incredible response from Swifties across the U.K. and Ireland who dressed up, sang along and danced away with fellow fans, with sell out sessions despite scheduling an unprecedented number of shows so no one missed out.”

After dedicating an entire month to Erotic Thrillers like Bound and Stranger by the Lake, October has been blissfully fun and silly. In the sequel to Sean S. Cunningham‘s game changer, poor Alice (Adrienne King) is brutally killed off immediately. After a five-year-jump, a new group of horny counsellors prepare to open Camp Blood. These red shirts include iconic Final Girl Ginny (Amy Steel), her sad sack boyfriend Paul (John Furey), as well as hot and fit Terry (Kirsten Baker) and pervy Scott (Russell Todd). And then there’s poor sweet Vickie (Lauren-Marie Taylor) and disabled Mark (Tom McBride).

Demonic possession is all the rage in Hollywood. This year alone, we’ve been haunted by Huesera: The Bone Woman, Attachment, Evil Dead Rise, Talk to Me, It Lives Inside, Run Rabbit Run, and The Nun II. Hell, they even rebooted The Exorcist with Ellen Burstyn and cast none other than Russell Crowe as a boozy Italian man of the cloth who locks horns with al diavolo. Now there’s In the Fire, a new film from director Conor Allyn (No Man’s Land).

Monia Chokri’s “The Nature of Love” has been acquired for U.K. and Ireland distribution by Vertigo Releasing.
The film stars Magalie Lépine Blondeau and Pierre-Yves Cardinal. In the film, the cosy married life of lecturer and intellectual Sophia (Blondeau) takes a bold new turn when she meets Sylvain (Cardinal), the ruggedly charming handyman at her new chalet and she embarks on a steamy and all-consuming affair.
“The Nature of Love” premiered at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand earlier this year and since then has played Toronto and Zurich among other festivals. It has its U.K. premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 13 and will play Chicago post that.
“Female mid-life crises are not explored in this mode of storytelling as often their male counterpart: While the tragedy of the woman who f—s around and finds out is a mainstay of plenty of great literature and cinema,...

Neon has picked up rights to Pamela Adlon’s directorial debut “Babes,” a comedy starring Ilana Glazer and Hasan Minhaj.
Glazer, the co-creator and star of Comedy Central’s hit sitcom “Broad City,” co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Rabinowitz. The story follows the aggressively single Eden, who becomes pregnant from a one-night stand and leans on her married best friend (and mother of two), Dawn, to guide her through the gestation and beyond.
Michelle Buteau and John Carroll Lynch round out the cast of “Babes.” A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
Range Media Partners and FilmNation financed “Babes.” It was produced by Susie Fox, Glazer, Rabinowitz, Ashley Fox and Breean Pojunas. FilmNation Entertainment, Range Media Partners and CAA Media Finance handled U.S. sales while FilmNation Entertainment is leading international sales.

Plot: After going missing for three days, two thirteen-year-old girls (Lidya Jewett & Olivia Marcum) return with no memory of their absence but exhibiting strange, violent behaviour that the father (Leslie Odom Jr) of one girl deduces is demonic possession.
Review: Pity poor David Gordon Green. While obviously a hardcore horror fan, the former indie darling took a critical mauling with Halloween Ends and seems doomed to repeat the experience with The Exorcist: Believer. It’s supposed to be the first entry in a new trilogy of Exorcist films, but the movie is so abysmal one shouldn’t hold out too much hope for a follow-up. While it may have a strong box-office opening, word of mouth seems sure to be dire. The only thing that saves Exorcist: Believer from being called the worst Exorcist movie ever is the fact that this particular series has some very bad entries.

After finishing atop the box-office weekend for the last three weeks, The Nun II failed to stave off the onslaught of new releases over the weekend, and seceded the number one spot to new release Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie by a margin of $5.9 million.

Second place was claimed by fellow newcomer Saw X with $18.0 million brought in by the latest Lionsgate offering. Director Gareth Edwards’ new film, The Creator debuted in third place with $14.0 million earned for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. After finishing in first place for the last three weekends, The Nun II was pushed down to a fourth-place finish where it added $4.7 million to bring its total to $76.8 million for Warner Bros. after four weeks. The supernatural horror film It Lives Inside, which stars Megan Suri of the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, didn’t draw in many viewers when it reached theatres last Friday. It had an opening weekend of $2.6 million and finished in seventh place on the top 10. Maybe it will do better when it reaches home video – and we can confirm that Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, will be giving the film a DVD release on November 7th. Copies are available for pre-order at This Link. We don’t have any information on a Blu-ray or 4K release at this time, but Amazon is also accepting pre-orders for the Prime Video digital release.
It’s a shame It Lives Inside didn’t have better box office, as it was good enough to earn an 8/10 review from JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols. That review can be read Here. The film...

For a third consecutive week, The Nun II maintained its position on top of the box-office weekend, albeit by the extremely slim lead of only $0.1 million.
Although The Nun II again experienced a decline in revenue – it made $6.3 million less than last weekend – it still managed to hold onto the number one slot of the top ten with $8.4 million, giving the Warner Bros. film a total of $69.2 million to date. Debuting in second place, Expend4ables made $8.3 million for Lionsgate, finishing just behind The Nun II. Falling a spot to third this weekend was A Haunting in Venice, which added $6.3 million over the weekend for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, giving the film a two-week tally of $25.4 million. Also dropping a spot this weekend was The Equalizer 3, which brought in $4.7 million for Columbia Pictures in its fourth weekend of release, giving it an overall total of $81.3 million. Hiding a sequel number in the title isn’t enough to make a film seem fresh. That’s the message audiences sent Millennium Films, which produced “Expend4bles” at a reported cost of $100 million. The franchise’s fourth film and the first since 2014 came in second place; it should have been an easy #1.
Lionsgate reports an estimated gross of $8.3 million, but studio estimates suggest it will be closer to $8 million. Pre-weekend projections had this in the range of $10 million or higher, but truly awful reviews (Metacritic has it at a rock-bottom 29) didn’t help.
Not every sequel bombs. “The Nun II” (Warner Bros.) repeated for a surprising third week at #1; last week it edged out Disney’s “A Haunting of Venice,” also unexpected. In its second straight week with a photo finish victory, The Nun II seems to have taken down the Expend4bles with an estimated $8.4 million, representing a 42% decline from last week. Despite this being the lowest grossing weekend of the year, this is great news for the Conjuring spin-off film as remaining atop the charts for three weeks in a row is a rare feat in a front loaded marketplace. With another month and change to go before Halloween, more people will be in the mood for a spooky time in theaters which should help this one remain steady at the box office. Of course in the coming weeks it will have some competition such as Saw X, The Exorcist: Believer and Five Nights at Freddie’s.

It was another weekend where two movies went head-to-head for the #1 spot at the box office, but it also was one of the worst showings this year. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Lionsgate gave the Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone ensemble action franchise another chance with “Expend4bles,” but after receiving terrible reviews with a 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, it struggled against the horror sequel “The Nun 2.”
Things are way too close to call, but as of now, Warner Bros. says that its franchise offering, “The Nun II,” has won the weekend with $8.4 million, down 42% in its third weekend. It has grossed $69.2 million in its first three weekends, still well below the showing for the previous “Nun” movie in 2018.

Stop Making Sense, the remastered concert film that sowed delight at TIFF, opens on 300 Imax screens in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland. Locations Stateside number 260 ahead of a nationwide release next week.
The 1984 Talking Heads extravaganza from Jonathan Demme is presented in its new iteration by A24 — meaning the decades-old movie can now extend its reach to a new, younger audience that is A24’s core fan base. Opening numbers are hard to gauge since there aren’t many comps but there are parties, discos, stars and sellouts with film looking at about $1.5 million, including Thursday previews.
A 40th anniversary large-format special premiere screening at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month had people dancing in the aisles and broke Imax records. It was the company’s highest grossing live event, earning $640.8k and selling out 25 screens across 165 Imax locations in North America and the BFI Imax in London.

Plot: An Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness.
Review: One of the coolest trends going on in horror right now is the usage of cultural Boogeymen. Some of these have reached the pop culture zenith, while others remain simple horrors for small-knit communities. Indian culture has a ton of demons, many of which the average American would have never heard anything about. The creature presented in It Lives Inside is called Pishacha and is based on flesh-eating demons in different Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. The history of the creature feels so much more intriguing since it’s based on actual mythology, versus something a screenwriter concocted to scare us. All of this is to say that, while the story may follow many beats we’ve seen before,...

Warning: Major spoilers for the following films abound.
Few experiences unite people from all walks of life like a fear of the dark. Often surpassing specific concerns of serial killers, monsters, witches, or demons, what we collectively fear most is that mysterious, dark unknown. Anything and everything could be lurking in the shadows just waiting to pounce. Bishal Dutta’s terrifying new film It Lives Inside follows an ancient evil that hides in dark corners while terrorizing its prey. The film follows a troubled teen named Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) terrorized by a flesh-eating demon known as the Pishacha that feasts on negative energy. This malevolent being soon sets its sights on her best friend Samidha (Megan Suri) and begins a campaign of terror hoping to gorge itself on chaos, destruction, and emotional pain.

What the fuck is in that jar?
That’s the first question that It Lives Inside throws at you, and the one that has Samida (Never Have I Ever‘s Megan Suri) wondering if it has something to do with the odd behavior of her classmate, Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). Once upon a time, these two first-generation Indian-Americans were the closest of friends. Then, as they got older, Samida started going by “Sam,” began distancing herself from her cultural identity, and chose to hang with a newer, “cooler” (read: Caucasian) crowd.

Megan Suri was permitted to conduct this interview amid the actors' strike through Neon's interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
Megan Suri is a big horror fan, so when the chance to star in the new film "It Lives Inside" came, it felt preordained. "I grew up watching [the genre]," she tells Popsugar. She instantly connected with movies like "The Collector" and "Paranormal Activity."
"I'm just a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. And I love feeling fear," she admits. Horror movies, Suri says, can elicit emotions from an audience like no other: "That's what's exciting to me, especially when you go and watch it in a theater and you're surrounded by that universal energy."

"I'm just a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. And I love feeling fear," she admits. Horror movies, Suri says, can elicit emotions from an audience like no other: "That's what's exciting to me, especially when you go and watch it in a theater and you're surrounded by that universal energy."

Warning: Major spoilers for the following films abound.
When asked about the most horrific time in their lives, many will shudder then say the years they spent in high school. From unpredictable acne and savage bullies to the particularly brutal pain of childhood friends growing apart, the high school halls can sometimes feel more like a minefield. Horror creators have explored this familiar subgenre for decades, from early classics like I Was a Teenage Werewolf to the slick and witty slasher boom of the 90s.
Bishal Dutta’s terrifying It Lives Inside continues this tradition by blending high school horror with demonic possession to explore the terrors of finding your place in an unforgiving world. The film follows Tamira (Mohana Krishnan), a tortured student carrying something much darker than a challenging schedule. Her best friend is drifting away, she hasn’t slept in weeks, and she’s constantly toting a...

Plot: Supernatural horror, based on the eponymous online phenomenon, a ritual conducted in an elevator, in which players attempt to travel to another dimension using a set of rules that can be found online.
Review: After last year’s Glorious, Rebekah McKendry has become a name that my ears perk up to whenever I see a film with her name attached. She has an understanding of the genre and a level of technical prowess that makes her movies an absolute treat. Or at least I thought so. Because Elevator Game is certainly no Glorious. The premise of a game you play that kills you has been done time and time again, but this one has an interesting hook with it being set on an elevator, utilizing it as a portal to another dimension. But, concept aside, there’s very little else to attach to here.

The encounter in the girls locker room initiates the nightmare scenario of It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta’s jagged feature debut about a small town besieged by an ancient spirit.
Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) stand across from each other in the dimly lit aisle, exchanging weighted stares. Culture and a shared history bind the two teenagers, whose reputations differ at their small, white suburban high school. Samidha goes by Sam now — an attempt to close the gap between her Indian culture and the American one embodied by her classmates. She would prefer to loiter around a campfire with her crush (Gage Marsh) than help her mother (Neeru Bajwa) prepare for puja.
Tamira is a more shadowy figure; her character seems mostly to be Sam’s opposite. The young woman, dressed in drab and ill-fitting clothes, sticks out. She inspires stares, whispers and jokes. When she shuffles through the hall,...

This Indian American monster movie has interesting touches of cultural specificity but it’s a mostly familiar formula
There’s a swirl of the old and the new in the hokey pre-Halloween horror It Lives Inside, a balance that could have benefited from a lot more of the latter – because when the first-time director Bishal Dutta does try to add freshness to the familiarity of formula, he manages to carve his film its own place within two overstuffed subgenres, flashes of intrigue as he veers between schlocky curse and even schlockier monster movie.
A wide-releasing horror film centered on an Indian American teenager already gives the film a certain distinction. Dutta, also acting as writer, tries to thread themes of assimilation and identity through a predictable procession of mostly ineffective jump scares and slightly more effective set pieces, the film working better when it’s trying to chill rather than shock.
